Teenager Lewis Miley scored a dramatic late winner as holders Newcastle United beat Fulham to reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The quarter-final looked to be heading for penalties after Fulham midfielder Sasa Lukic's header cancelled out Yoane Wissa's opener at St James' Park.

But Miley headed home at the near post from Sandro Tonali's stoppage-time corner as Newcastle got back to winning ways following a damaging derby defeat against Sunderland on Sunday.

The 19-year-old midfielder stepped up when Newcastle needed him most, having selflessly filled in at right-back because of injuries to Kieran Trippier, Lewis Hall, Dan Burn and Tino Livramento, who hobbled off on Wednesday night.

Miley, in the process, gave Eddie Howe a crucial and much-needed victory on a night supporters repeatedly sang the name of the head coach.

The youngster was one of five players who kept his place from the weekend as Howe made six changes to his side.

Wissa was one of those who came into the team and he quickly made an impression on his first start since recovering from a knee injury and, indeed, since completing his protracted £55m move from Brentford in the summer.

Although Benjamin Lecomte got a hand to Jacob Murphy's first-time cross, the Fulham goalkeeper merely knocked the ball into the path of Wissa, who bundled it into the net from close range.

However, shaky Newcastle were not ahead for long as Antonee Robinson ghosted into space between Murphy and Miley out wide and picked out the unmarked Sasa Lukic, who powered a header past Aaron Ramsdale.

Lecomte later punched away a swerving effort from Bruno Guimaraes and was kept busy, getting down to parry a low drive from Harvey Barnes and making a fine late save to claw away Miley's shot.

But Miley rose to head home from the corner that followed to send Newcastle into a third EFL Cup semi-final in four seasons.

Newcastle analysis: Miley leads response after derby gloom
There have been two constants in Howe's four-year reign at Newcastle: his side's ability to respond, and their big moments in the Carabao Cup.

Both came together on Wednesday night.

This was far from a perfect performance, and for some Newcastle cannot truly make amends for the manner of their derby defeat until they meet Sunderland again in March.

But this was an important victory.

On a night when the holders' fate could have been decided by a penalty shootout, they dug deep and kept pushing for a winner right until the end.

A raucous crowd willed the hosts on after the fourth official lifted up his board to signal six minutes were added on, and Miley landed the decisive blow.

Miley scored what should have been a precious winning goal in Leverkusen in the Champions League last week - only for the visitors to concede a late equaliser on that night.

This time, however, Newcastle got over the line.

Fulham analysis: Deja vu for Silva on Tyneside
This was a familiar ending for Fulham at St James'.

Just a few weeks after Bruno Guimaraes scored a 90th-minute winner against Marco Silva's side in the Premier League at the same ground, the visitors conceded late again to lose by the same scoreline.

Given the potential prize on offer, this was surely even more painful for Fulham, who were dreaming of a second EFL Cup semi-final in three seasons.

Head coach Silva will be left to rue what might have been, given his team failed to make the most of a string of counter-attacking opportunities in the first half.

One in particular left Silva doubled over the touchline after Kevin failed to pick out the in-form Harry Wilson.

But the Fulham manager should also take heart from the spirit his side showed to equalise so soon after going behind, particularly without three key players in Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze, who have flown out to represent Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations.

What's next for these teams?
Newcastle host Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday (12:30 GMT) before a trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on Friday, December 26 (20:00 GMT).

Fulham welcome Nottingham Forest to Craven Cottage on Monday, 22 December (20:00 GMT) before travelling to London Stadium to take on West Ham on Saturday, 27 December (15:00 GMT).

Post-Newcastle Press Conference
Marco Silva was left gutted after Newcastle scored another late winner against Fulham at St James' Park.

In a bitter sense of déjà vu, the Magpies booked their spot in the Carabao Cup Semi-Finals through Lewis Miley's stoppage time header, echoing their last gasp win against us in the Premier League in October.

"A difficult one to take," Silva admitted. "Another one, after one month and a half/two months, to come here to lose again in the way we lost, in the last moments of the game, was very difficult for us, in a competition that we wanted to be playing in the Semi-Finals next month.

"Better first half, performance wise, for us than the second. First half, even if we concede an early goal, a bit unlucky the way we conceded the first goal, the reaction was good, good goal from ourselves.

"We matched clearly the game first half, some moments Newcastle were more dominant, other moments with ourselves much more in control of the ball. After the goal, we had a very good chance with Kevin to score the second goal.

"Newcastle had one or two good moments as well first half, but I believe that first half we played in a way that we wanted to play.

"Second half more difficult – more difficult to set our game, we defended too deep in some moments.

"Apart from the save before the corner and one or two crosses, they didn't have many [chances]. That is the thing, they didn't create. Much more in control, much more playing in our last third, but not with the chances.

"We were not able to set the game, to play, to create our offensive organisation the way we like to play, and our counter attacks, our fast attacks, they didn't work really.

"We had one or two good moments, but not great chances second half really, not very dangerous moments. Even so, the way we lost the game from a set-piece in the last moments of the game is a very, very difficult one to take."

Late Newcastle goal sends Fulham out of Carabao Cup
A stoppage-time goal sent Fulham out of the Carabao Cup

Yoane Wissa, making his first start for Newcastle since his summer move from Brentford, scored after 10 minutes – thanks largely to an error by keeper Benjamin Lecomte.

Sasa Lukic equalised six minutes later and Fulham caused the home side problems.

However, with the quarter-final looking likely to go to penalties, Lewis Miley headed home Sandro Tonali 's corner.

It meant yet another exit in the later stages of a cup competition for Fulham, who were looking to finally make it to Wembley.

They went behind when Lecomte palmed Jacob Murphy's low cross straight to Wissa, who helped himself to his first Magpies goal.

The response was swift – Antonee Robinson crossed from the left and the unmarked Lukic headed home.

Fulham came under pressure in the second half and Joachim Andersen turned Murphy's cross into his own net, but the goal was disallowed as the Newcastle winger was offside.

When Lecomte produced a superb save to deny Miley, a shootout seemed imminent, but the youngster netted from the resulting corner to take the holders through in dramatic fashion.

De Fougerolles named Canada Young Player of the Year
Luc De Fougerolles has been named as Canada's Young Player of the Year.

The award recognises Luc's achievements across the last 12 months for both club and country.

Despite only turning 20 in October, Luc added nine Canada caps to his growing tally during 2025. The defender was a regular during Canada's Concacaf Gold Cup campaign in the summer, helping keep clean sheets against Honduras and El Salvador before a penalty shootout defeat to Guatemala at the Quarter-Finals stage.

Luc also played his part in wins over Ukraine, Romania and Wales – as Canada ramp up preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

He penned a new long-term deal at Fulham back in the summer before joining FCV Dender on loan, where he has played 15 times across all competitions.

Newcastle 2-1 Fulham: Lewis Miley to the rescue as Magpies' Carabao Cup defence continues
League Cup holders are into the hat for the last four

Lewis Miley's stoppage-time header sent Carabao Cup holders Newcastle into the semi-finals with a 2-1 win against Fulham.

Yoane Wissa, making his first full start since arriving on Tyneside in the summer, put the Magpies in front with his maiden goal for the club, but Sasa Lukic soon nodded the Cottagers level.

The game looked set for penalties after a cagey second half, but 19-year-old Miley headed home from a corner to secure Newcastle's spot in the final four as they bounced back from their derby defeat to Sunderland at the weekend.

Fulham sniffed around the Newcastle box in the early stages and Raul Jimenez looped an effort wide, but despite the visitors' positive start, the Magpies took the lead in the 10th minute.

In a quick move stemming from Fabian Schar's brilliant cross-field pass into Jacob Murphy, the winger hit a low cross into the six-yard area which was palmed away by Benjamin Lecomte into the path of Wissa to stab home.

Fulham responded six minutes later when skipper Joachim Andersen lofted the ball into Antonee Robinson on the left and he crossed into the box, where an unmarked Lukic burst forward to nod past Aaron Ramsdale.

Wissa had another chance but mistimed his header and Kevin had an effort saved by Ramsdale at the opposite end in a close battle.

Bruno Guimaraes came close to extending Newcastle's lead when his curling shot was saved by Lecomte and the rebound dropped to Murphy, but Fulham were eventually able to scramble his cross away before Tino Livramento fired wide.

Another Murphy cross was stabbed clear by Jorge Cuenca and Wissa was unable to meet Harvey Barnes' ball into the area as Newcastle looked to strike before the break.

The Magpies started the second half brightly and following some good movement around the area, Barnes forced a low save from Lecomte before Fulham cleared Miley's corner.

Andersen turned the ball into his own net from Murphy's cross in the 65th minute, but the goal was chalked off with the Newcastle winger offside, and Livramento had an effort held before Ramsdale made a comfortable claim from Emile Smith Rowe's strike.

Sandro Tonali and Nick Woltemade were brought on for the hosts while Fulham turned to Josh King and Adama Traore.

But Eddie Howe was handed another blow to his already thinly stretched defensive backline when Livramento was forced off after receiving treatment on the pitch, with Alex Murphy coming on.

A cagey final 10 minutes saw Malick Thiaw clear Harry Wilson's free-kick and Wilson burst forward on the break, but had his cross nodded away by Schar.

Newcastle pushed for a winner, with Guimaraes having a cross cleared before Lecomte made a low save from Miley's effort.

The teenager found the winner from the resulting corner with a flicked header looping into the net from Tonali's delivery in the second minute of additional time.

A late surge from Fulham saw Kenny Tete fire a powerful strike over the crossbar, but Newcastle managed the final moments to book their spot in the semi-finals.

Silva: Fulham should have been better prepared for Afcon departures
Marco Silva says Fulham should have been better prepared for losing players to the African Cup of Nations.

Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi will all be representing Nigeria at the tournament and were therefore unavailable for the Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat at Newcastle.

Fulham's lack of squad depth was exposed somewhat at St James' Park, where they had only three attacking options on the bench.

Head coach Silva made his frustration clear during the summer at the club's lack of signings – and again suggested it had caused problems following the cup exit.

"We should have prepared in a different way last June and July. We didn't," he said.

It was a painful defeat for Fulham, who once again lost in the later stages of a cup competition.

A goal in the second minute of stoppage time by Lewis Miley took Newcastle through in dramatic fashion.

"It was a very difficult one to take," Silva admitted.

"We defended deeper than we'd like to see and our counter-attacks didn't work. We had one or two moments in the second half."

Sasa Lukic was forced off at half-time with a groin injury, but Silva confirmed the substitution was precautionary.

"He was feeling the groin in the last minute of the first half. He felt something there. He was getting worse," Silva explained.

"He was not completely out during the half-time but he had some tests there and was feeling something weak.

"It was a precaution for us to not take the risk with him and that's why we changed at half-time."
