Liverpool 2-0 Fulham

At a glance

Liverpool supporters stage protests before and during game against proposed ticket price increases

Teenager Rio Ngumoha opens scoring for Reds with precise curling finish

Mohamed Salah adds second goal four minutes later

Liverpool ended a miserable sequence of results to stay in the Champions League places with victory against Fulham in the Premier League at Anfield.
Head coach Arne Slot and his players came under increased scrutiny after they were thrashed by Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-final before producing a cowering performance when losing at Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.

Slot rang the changes, making five ahead of the Champions League quarter-final second leg against PSG at Anfield on Tuesday - and was rewarded with an improved display.

Rio Ngumoha and Mohamed Salah, who was dropped in Paris, were in the starting line-up, and both were on target with similar precise curling finishes inside four minutes in the first half.

Liverpool's win leaves them in fifth, a position which now qualifies for a place in next season's Champions League.

The victory came amid protests from home fans before and during the game, expressing their anger against owners FSG over proposed increases in ticket prices.

Liverpool analysis: Ngumoha lights up Anfield
Liverpool's fans needed something to lift their misery after those dismal losses to Manchester City and PSG, as well as mounting discontent over ticket price rises announced by the club's owners.

The Kop carried an unfamiliar look, with the flags that are such an integral part of Anfield's atmosphere removed as part of the protest.

And after the game started, a group of fans marched in front of The Kop carrying a large banner emblazoned with the message: "No To Ticket Price Increases".

It was against this backdrop that Liverpool finally produced something for a fanbase that has watched the champions' remarkable decline this season to cheer.

And central to that was 17-year-old Ngumoha, who was in dazzling form on Liverpool's left-flank, crucially producing the opening goal after 36 minutes with a perfect right-foot finish just as Fulham started to threaten.

Salah provided a flash of the old magic four minutes later with a carbon copy finish from the other side of the area.

Ngumoha was given a deserved standing ovation when he was replaced by Alexander Isak after 69 minutes.

Liverpool still face a mammoth task to overturn a 2-0 deficit against PSG on Tuesday, but at least this win will give Slot's team a much-needed lift in confidence.

Fulham analysis: Toothless Cottagers miss opportunity
Marco Silva's Fulham arrived at Anfield with Liverpool's confidence low after damaging defeats and discontent swirling around a fanbase dissatisfied with events on and off the field.

It carried all the hallmarks of the perfect opportunity to strike a wounded opponent and record a rare Anfield victory.

Instead, Fulham lacked urgency when it mattered, even when it was clear Liverpool's rearguard was vulnerable, with some opportunities to take the lead, or at least claw back the goal that might have had nerves jangling among players and fans alike, not taken.

Indeed, Fulham had 19 attempts in this defeat, the joint most Liverpool have faced in a Premier League game since records started in 2003/04.

Fulham will look back on this with regret because this was a clear chance to cause Liverpool trouble and it was missed.

What's next for these teams?
Liverpool face Paris St-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final second leg at Anfield on Tuesday (20:00 BST).

Fulham travel to Brentford in the Premier League next Saturday (12:30 BST).

Post-Liverpool Press Conference
Marco Silva wasn't happy with Fulham's first half performance at Anfield, with two quickfire goals earning Liverpool the three points.

Clinical finishes from Rio Ngumoha and Mohamed Salah before the break proved the difference, though the Whites were much improved after the break.

"Yes, it's true – the game was decided in five minutes," Silva said. "In my opinion it was decided in that first half, where our approach was not aggressive enough, on and off the ball.

"We gave Liverpool the chance to build up their attack too easily in some moments, not with the right aggressiveness off the ball. That was the reason why they had the chances and they were in command of the game most of the time during the first half.

"And the good example of that is the way they score the first goal – a long ball from the goalkeeper, the way they were able to win that ball in the air, lack of communication between two players, Salah's first contact on the ball, the way they won the second ball before the great finishing of Rio.

"I think it's a good example about our approach during that first half that was not aggressive enough for the level of a game in the Premier League, and a game that we wanted to win, and had the ambition to win.

"Second half was completely different – our approach, our aggressiveness on and off the ball. I know that Liverpool was winning the game, but the way we won many balls in our offensive half, we were much more aggressive, we created much more chances as well.

"Of course, we were not ruthless enough, because with a goal we can create a different scenario in the stadium, in the opposition side as well. We got a big chance with Emile to score, and the game is going to be probably different [if it goes in].

"We tried to score the 2-1, but we were not ruthless. Liverpool when they had the chances, first half, they did it, and that made a big impact in the game.

"But our face and our image as a team is much more that second half than the first half. For us to win games and to be fighting for what we want to fight for, has to be much more in the way we played second half than we did first half."

Liverpool 2-0 Fulham: Rio Ngumoha stars as Reds boost European hopes with huge win
Reds back into top five after dispatching Cottagers

Mohamed Salah scored as Liverpool bought under-fire manager Arne Slot some breathing space with a 2-0 win over Fulham at Anfield on Saturday.

It was the Egyptian's first goal since announcing he is to leave the club this summer and came moments after teenager Rio Ngumoha had set the Reds up for three much-needed Premier League points.

Slot's side had won just two of their previous eight games in all competitions and, after being outplayed by Manchester City and Paris St Germain in the past week, the Dutchman is under considerable pressure.

He faces a battle to win over the doubters but, with a result that bolsters top-five hopes, he at least earned some respite ahead of Tuesday's challenging Champions League return against PSG.

The atmosphere was subdued, partly due to the home side's indifferent form and partly because of a protest against ticket price rises, for which there were also few of the usual flags and banners on the Kop.

Liverpool were helped in the first half by a rusty Fulham, who were playing for the first time in three weeks and struggled to get going.

Andy Robertson - making his first appearance since announcing his departure - had a shot blocked before Salah saw an effort turned behind for a corner and Cody Gakpo drilled wide. Ngumoha had a penalty appeal turned down after a challenge from Oscar Bobb.

Fulham did not create an opportunity until the 29th minute when Alex Iwobi shot at Giorgi Mamardashvili but the keeper saved again from Bobb soon after.

Former Liverpool midfielder Harry Wilson also curled over but Ngumoha and Salah struck in quick succession to put the hosts in control.

Florian Wirtz's driving run led to the 36th-minute opener, finished brilliantly by Ngumoha, who wrong-footed Timothy Castagne before curling low into the far corner.

It was the 17-year-old's first goal since his dramatic late winner at Newcastle in August, when the mood at the club was completely different.

Ngumoha was involved again as Liverpool doubled their lead four minutes later, this time picking out Gakpo, who controlled and laid off for Salah to clip home across goal.

After netting 29 in last season's title-winning campaign, it was only the Egyptian's sixth Premier League goal of the season.

Fulham started the second half strongly but Sasa Lukic had a goal ruled out for offside, Rodrigo Muniz failed to make the most of a free header and Emile Smith Rowe missed the target.

At the other end, Gakpo spurned two chances to put Liverpool 3-0 up and substitute Alexis Mac Allister thrashed wide.

Raul Jimenez went close as Fulham threatened a nervy finish but Liverpool held on.

Fulham beaten by Liverpool at Anfield
Goals from Rio Ngumoha and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool victory over Fulham at Anfield.

Having defended well in the opening stages, Fulham began to assert themselves and Harry Wilson went close to giving them the lead, shooting narrowly over, only for them to concede two goals in the space of four minutes late in the first half.

Youngster Ngumoha tricked Timothy Castagne near the left-hand edge of the penalty area and curled a glorious shot beyond keeper Bernd Leno and in off the far post.

Salah doubled Liverpool's lead with a thumping left-footed strike from the opposite side of the box, which also went in off the post.

Fulham boss Marco Silva made a double substitution at the interval, sending Emile Smith Rowe and Sasa Lukic on in place of Josh King and Oscar Bobb.

The visitors did threaten at times in the second half but were unable to find a goal to haul themselves back into the game – Smith Rowe missed a great chance when he fired wide after being set up by Ryan Sessegnon, who also came off the bench.

Another substitute, Raul Jimenez, went close to pulling a goal back when he too shot wide.

The result left Silva's side 11th in the Premier League table and put fifth-placed Liverpool four points clear of Chelsea, who play Manchester City on Sunday, and five clear of Brentford.

Fulham: Leno, Castagne, Andersen, Bassey, Robinson (Sessegnon 69), Berge, Iwobi, Wilson (Chukwueze 80), King (Lukic 46), Bobb (Smith Rowe 46), Muniz (Jimenez 80).
Subs not used: Lecomte, Diop, Cuenca, Cairney.

Fulham eye move for £30m Harry Wilson replacement - as THREE Premier League rivals target exiting free agent
Fulham are exploring a deal for Bayer Leverkusen's 23-year-old attacking midfielder Malik Tillman.

The Cottagers are looking for options as Harry Wilson is poised to leave at the end of the season as a free agent.

Everton and Aston Villa are vying for Wilson's signature while Crystal Palace have also expressed interest in the in-form 29-year-old Wales international.

Tillman was born in Germany and graduated through Bayern Munich's academy. He broke into the first team and had a successful couple of loan spells with Rangers then PSV Eindhoven who he joined permanently before being sold to Leverkusen for £30million.

He still has four years left on contract but Fulham are discussing whether to test Leverkusen's resolve with an offer for the summer.

Tillman qualified for USA through his father and is expected to be part of Mauricio Pochettino's squad for the World Cup. If Fulham opt to proceed, they may wish to get a deal agreed before the tournament in case his value rises.

Marco Silva's side had lined up a deal for Tillman's compatriot PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepi too but that fell through last month, despite him travelling to London for a medical.

The clubs couldn't agree on final details as he returned to PSV for the rest of the season and there is debate whether they should return to negotiations.

Tillman can play behind the main striker and off the left flank.

Fulham U21 2-1 Chelsea U21
Fulham Under-21s came from behind to defeat Chelsea 2-1 at Motspur Park.

In our final regular game of the PL2 season, our Young Whites put in a big shift to defeat the table-toppers.

Despite Alfie McNally saving from the spot early on, it was Chelsea who went into the break ahead thanks to the prolific Shim Mheuka.

But Hayden Mullins' side were at their very best in the second period, turning the game on its head. A diving header from Alfie White and a sensational solo strike from Jonah Kusi-Asare completed a memorable turnaround against our neighbours.

All of this was without some major absentees too. Seth Ridgeon, Jayden Quashie, Bradley Slade, Ollie Gofford and Devan Tanton all missed out.

Ryan Kavuma McQueen – who made his First Team debut in last weekend's 7-0 FA Cup win over Port Vale – showed his quality early on with a mazy run down the right, with McNally able to narrow the angle as he closed in on goal.

A big chance went begging after 11 minutes. White squared the ball for Kusi-Asare, who saw a shot blocked from close range, and Dan Casey landed on the rebound, but skewed an effort off target from a few yards.

It was a lively start, with Kavuma McQueen very much catching the eye. The ball was glued to his feet as he dribbled into the box, only to be fouled by White.

Mheuka – PL2's top scorer – stepped up, but McNally guessed right, diving low to his left to make an impressive one-handed save.

Farhaan Ali Wahid isn't far behind Mheuka in the goal contributions standings. The winger teased Genesis Antwi down the left, stinging the palms of Max Merrick with a powerful strike on his weaker foot.

But despite being denied by McNally from the spot, Mheuka found the net on the half hour mark. Kavuma McQueen was once again involved, and some neat play on the edge of the box eventually resulted in Mheuka squeezing the ball past McNally with a well taken finish.

Jesse Derry is another player to have made his Chelsea debut this year. He cut in from the left onto his stronger right foot, but there wasn't enough movement on his shot to truly trouble McNally.

It took just 15 minutes into the interval for Fulham to equalise. Jon Esenga's wicked delivery from the left was headed expertly beyond Merrick by a diving White.

Kusi-Asare's winning goal was a stunner, similar to his sensational solo goal against West Ham a couple of months ago. Picking up the ball from Macaulay Zepa 35 yards out, the Swedish striker drove forwards powerfully, eventually unleashing a fierce left-footed strike into the roof of the net.

Mullins' men weren't satisfied with sitting on the lead. Samuel Amissah headed over from close range, and probably should have done better with the effort, although the ball did arrive quickly from the right side.

Already with an excellent assist to his name, Esenga was after a goal for himself. His inswinging corners were causing Merrick all sorts of problems, and the Chelsea goalkeeper had to tip the ball over his bar on a couple of different occasions, as Esenga looked to score directly from the improbable angle.

The majority of a healthy 350+ crowd thought Esenga had scored when his free-kick nestled agonisingly into the side netting.

Our youngsters held out, despite eight minutes of stoppage-time, and will now head into the Play-Offs full of momentum. Details of our Round of 16 fixture will be announced in due course.
