Lecomte: Keep building

Benjamin Lecomte, who has agreed a new contract with Fulham to keep him at the Club for a further year, hopes to build on the Anfield clean sheet when we travel to West Ham United in the Carabao Cup.

Benji, it was a very good game against Wimbledon in the last round – how motivated is everyone to have a good cup run?

Yeah, I think it's important for everyone, for the Club and the fans, also. We played a good game, we didn't concede goals, so I think for the trust also for the team it's good. But now it's a bigger game, I would say, and we will have to give more than 100 per cent if we want to win.

You were between the sticks for the Wimbledon game. If selected to face West Ham, a great opportunity for you in a big stadium – should be a good occasion?

Yeah, yeah, exactly. For me, it's always a good opportunity to have the Carabao Cup, and also to have more minutes to play. So I hope, if I play, it will be a good game for me and also for the team.

West Ham are doing very well, they won 6-0 on Friday night, so as a goalkeeper when you're playing a team who are scoring a lot of goals, you know you could be in for a busy game?

I saw they scored a lot of goals this last game. But it will be a different game against us, I think. Our team and the defence, we will give everything to not concede again, because it's important. We did it in the Cup, we did it in the last game against Liverpool, so for me it's important that each of us keep building something good to not concede goals. Let's see after the game, but I hope I will make some saves, and the team will help me, also.

It was a great team performance at Anfield on Saturday – what do you think that's done for confidence in the group, as getting that first clean sheet in the league felt important?

I think it's important, not only for the 'keeper, also for the team. Because there are many aspects in football that we can progress and move forward, but I think the first one is to have a strong team to not concede goals every game. Because then, at least if you have one opportunity to score, you can win a game. When you concede too many goals in a game, it's really hard to win. So, I think for the trust, and for us to make the point in Anfield, it's really important.

And just finally, your contract runs to the summer of 2028 now – happy to extend your Fulham journey?

Yeah – I feel really good here with the team, also with all the staff members and all the people in the Club. So, for me, it's really good to have this extension and to move forward with the Club.

Bit of an odd one as far as I'm concerned. Maybe the club doesn't want to be in the market for both a starter and backup next season???

As a back up he isnt the worst

Lets face it you are never going to get (for arguments sake) James Trafford as back up and Leno wont wabt to be a number 2

He is a massive step up from Steven Benda so that gets my vote
Remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.
I will be as good as I can be and when I cross the finishing line I will see what it got me

Not sure it's a positive move let alone ambitious one long term from both parties involved. We shall see.

It gives him a bit of security and if we got an offer/ he wanted to move we are in a better position to get a fee.

He's a backup keeper, he's not going to be on fortunes and he's experienced. There's not a single PL team with two "good" keepers because it's financially inefficient to do so. This news likely confirms Leno is off in the summer and he will be backup to a new #1, and he's also quite handy to keep around as he's a penalty saving specialist

Me too. He was brilliant against Wycombe last season, a penalty 'wall'👍🏼

Should've done better for their second though

I think he's ok, but not great. We've had better back up keepers before.
