Did anyone actually think he was a good keeper?
I know lots called him Pony Warner, but I'm just wondering if I was alone in thinking he was alright.
Proper error prone, but sometimes was top draw.

He'd have days where he'd play a blinder against Liverpool, then drop the ball in the back of the net against Bolton on a wet Tuesday night. He was OK, but to error prone for my liking.

Tony Warner is similar to a keeper  we had to bring in the sixties called Dave Underwood a heady mix of brilliance and crap, bit like Gomez from Spurs ( loved that shot he threw in the net from Simon Davies).
Not sure if Warner is still plying his trade somewhere (maybe in The West Indies), but Gomez is off to Watford this week.

Dave Underwood was very popular bloke despite his odd blunders due to his Tommy Cooper like comedic ability.
Even then, as now first division players loved a bet and my brother would occasionally find himself in a poker game after matches at the Cottage. Dave Underwood would have the betting clique ( which included The Maestro sometimes) in stitches with his various impressions answering the phone, the best of which was convincing hardened reporters they had got through to the local Chinese Restaurant!
The atmosphere's fresh and the debate lively.

Lawrie sanchez's team- first game away to arsenal we led 1-0 for 85mins and he had a blinder.  Arsenal won 2-1 with a penalty and a late goal. Hleb I think it was. The two following games against bolton and middlesbrough both at home he made the same mistake in both games dropping the ball into the net. That was him in a nutshell, one step forward, 4 steps backwards. Didnt he save a lauren penalty at highbury too? Maybe we should've kept him to just play against arsenal lol.

Overall though he was crap. Im from bermondsey and all my mates support the scum that is millwall and they absolutely love him. Denzil from only fools and horses is what hes known as at the den

Interested in the mention of Simon Davies.  He just gave it all up didn't he?  Also read he was a VERY good golfer.  Any updates?

Was watching an Aussie League game this past season -- I know, I know -- and I believe Mr. Warner was turning out for the New Zealand team in that league. I always thought he LOOKED like a great athlete, and then he'd move and you'd go, "Not so much."

Especially for keepers, the difference between brilliant and crap can be quite small, and most of the difference is probably in the head. He obviously had the ability to play really well, but his concentration was not up to it. A few lapses of concentration and your confidence is drained. And once self-confidence goes in a keeper, it's the end.

There are goal keeper related howlers and there are Tony Warner related howlers..

Any keeper can misjudge a deflected shot and end up fumbling a ball they only sort of half got to or something, but Tony Warner was in another league.

There was a football management game I remember playing (USM 98 if I recall correctly..) which had an early example of the FIFA Manager style approach in that you could "watch the games" and see the players on the pitch instead of read from text boxes or whatever..

Anyways, you could make the goalkeeper do insane things in certain circumstances.  I forget exactly what you had to do but it was something like putting an outfield player in nets or trying to start a game with 9 players or something like that.  Everything went fine at first with the goalie playing a blinder, then the ball goes out for a goal kick.  Your keeper would tee the ball up as normal and begin his run up.  Whenever he got to the ball though, instead of kicking it up the pitch it would inexplicably fly backwards at supersonic speeds into the back of your own net, then your keeper would dive into the back of the net to try and save it but would bug out and slide all the way to the corner flag instead.

These are the kind of mistakes that Tony Warner made in reality.

He signed a permanent contract with us for two years - played 7 games and got loaned out to three clubs for the rest of the time.. Doesn't sound like a good player.

Most recently was plying his trade in Malta.. A nice place, but probably not known for it's football...

That said credit where it's due, he's managed to keep playing and clearly loves the sport... Was on Blackpool's squad list last season though, so despite playing any games and now being a free agent (at 40) he's had a good innings.

Didn't play much though for any of his teams apart from Milwall where he got a runners up medal for the FA cup...

Feel sorry for the guy, I get the impression he must have had injuries.. otherwise it just becomes a bit too much as after milwall it doesn't look like he ever had a full season of games.
