i remember him running the show against Wycombe away in the carabao cup

I was at that game and agree. I was disappointed to see him just fade away

We also let Eze go and turned away Declan Rice. Also there is a top quality right back at Forest, Djed Spence, who we also let leave...grr.

So if we hadn't been so incompetent as to let this young genius go where would he figure in our current set up? Which of our current very strong midfield would he displace?
He's doing quite well at Celtic, having started 6 of the 9 league games in which he has featured, but it's hardly sensational stuff.
The last Academy escapee to pitch up at Parkhead was Pat Robert who actually was something of a sensation there. He is now trying to establish himself at League One Sunderland.

I think it's quite amusing that some get excited by an ex-player's exploits at Celtic, but when mention was made recently of our current player's MoM performances on loan at Hibs (Sylvester Jasper) it was greeted by disparaging sneers about the quality of Scottish football.

As others have mentioned - his route to the first team was blocked by Josh Onomah, who Parker brought in on a big wage and who has been a massive disappointment.

In all honesty - I think our central midfield is one of our weakest positions at the moment.  O'Riley may not quite have the passing ability of Seri, or the tackling ability and energy of Reed, but I would say that he is probably a better all round player than Chalobah and Onomah. I've also yet to see anything from Cairney to suggest that he is the player he was before the knee injury..

Don't think we turned Declan Rice down. Think he chose West Ham over us.

Let's look at it in a positive light. The Academy and those that run it are producing players who are able to go on and have a career in professional football. The timings not always been right for those players to stay at the club. It's a problem I'm sure the club are aware of and are likely taking future steps to hold on to some of those players. A permanent position in the prem would help.
All businesses, particularly successful ones produce talent that leaves. All our teams seem to be doing well at the moment. I think that shows from the Chairman down, what a talented and successful structure exists at the Club. Long may it continue.

Given that our u23s are currently pissing the league you'd think there would be some talent there.

I'm sure there is.

But it's League 2 they're top of, not League 1.

Good post I Ronic, above, by the way.

He left because Parker wanted him to play as more of a DM and he disagreed. The lads an attacking player so of course he disagreed.  It seems SP cannot be blamed for anything by some on here but if you wanted to blame someone...

Parker, the former Fulham manager, tried to play O'Riley as a 6. In O'Riley's on words, though [The Athletic]: "When you play deeper, you don't have as much licence to go forward. I feel like it was restricting my strengths. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't really how I wanted to play."

I saws an interview with the player where he said he was told he would not be taken on by Fulham.

He said in an interview about 2 weeks ago, once Chelsea let him go, he had offers from Southampton and Fulham and turned both down for Westham.
