Luton Town 2-4 Fulham

Fulham scored four goals in a game for the first time since January 2019
Raul Jimenez scored twice as Fulham beat relegated Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on the final day of the Premier League season.

Adama Traore produced an unerring finish into the bottom corner as Fulham took the lead just before the break.

But after Calvin Bassey was adjudged to have fouled Chiedozie Ogbene, Carlton Morris rolled home a penalty to equalise.

Jimenez restored Fulham's lead deep into first-half added time, slotting in a first-time effort from Harry Wilson's pass.

The Mexico international then got in front of the Luton defence and headed home his second from a Harrison Reed free-kick minutes after the interval.

Alfie Doughty's free-kick reduced the deficit but Marco Silva's side restored their two-goal advantage when Wilson curled into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Leaky Luton return to the Championship
Luton can be proud of their general performances across the season, but their defending on the final day showed exactly why they will be returning to the Championship.

To underline the point, there were just 67 seconds between their equaliser and Fulham's second goal.

The Hatters conceded 85 league goals this season - with only Sheffield United (104) and Darmstadt (86) letting in more across Europe's top five leagues.

But while Luton failed to win any of their final six games, they did score in each of their last seven - highlighting the fact they did not go down without a fight.

Morris' penalty meant he finished the season with 11 league goals - more than any other Luton player. Doughty, another of their top performers, signed off with his second goal of the season.

Their fans stayed behind long after the final whistle to ensure the players returned to the pitch to rapturous applause.

Rob Edwards' side may have had a brief stay in the division but there is no doubt it has been a memorable one.

Speaking after the match, the Luton boss said: "We are a special club. We have got unique support - we have had that all season long. Everyone that has travelled has shown their best.

"We have given our best this year and ultimately we have just come up short. If one game could almost tell a season's story, that would be today.

"We showed really good moments, created chances, didn't take them, conceded from a mistake, then were punished with a brilliant finish, equalised and then conceded straight after.

"Full of endeavour, some really good quality at times as well, but just a little bit too fragile."

Wilson shines in final-day win for Fulham
Wilson was sublime against a Luton side who were unable to cope with him.

The Welsh winger scored once and provided two assists - becoming the first Fulham player to have three 'direct goal contributions' in a Premier League match since Dimitar Berbatov against Arsenal in November 2012.

He cut inside and passed to Traore for Fulham's opener and found Jimenez in space for his first goal.

After the break, he struck the crossbar after Reed's clever backheel from a free-kick.

But eight minutes later he scored the goal his performance deserved, curling home as Fulham finished the season with a flourish.

Fulham boss Silva said: "Some very good goals from ourselves.

"The fourth goal is another good example, a great open-play moment from us and a great goal from ourselves.

"There were some very good individual performances and the collective performance was good as well. We deserved [the result], we were the best team on the pitch.

"Unfortunately, we conceded two goals that we should avoid as well, but three points to end the season, away from home, it was important."

Post-Luton Press Conference
Fulham's new look front three of Adama Traoré, Raúl Jiménez and Harry Wilson led the team to a slick 4-2 win at Luton Town on the final day of the season.

Asked what positives and negatives he took from the finale, Silva replied: "Firstly, always the most important thing, the result.

"Of course, when you win a football match in the last Premier League match, it's always really important to finish on a high, to finish with a good performance. A good result, definitely, and a good performance, too. Three points that we deserved, clearly.

"It was nice to see us finish the season like we started, with an away win. Unfortunately for us, that's something that played a big part in our season, we were not able to be consistent away from home, but it was good for us to finish [with a win].

"Some great goals, the way we scored the second goal, for example, great open play moment from ourselves. The way we scored the four goals, and some other moments we had during the match, was really important.

"Some individual performances at a very good level. Our frontline, I have to mention how Raúl was always the player to link that high pressure that they tried to do every time, with the man-on-man situation. The way we were able to use Raúl to be the key man to link our game, was a really good performance from him.

"There were some very good moments from Adama as well. Very good performance from Harry Wilson, very good. It was nice to see our frontline perform really well.

"The negatives, clearly, was the way we conceded the two goals. We should have avoided both goals – the first one, the penalty, and the second one from a wide free-kick."

Defeat for Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield meant that Fulham leapfrogged them in the table to finish 13th, and Silva was asked how he reflects on 2023/24.

"Another successful season for this football club, I'm 100 per cent sure," he said. "What we have been achieving last three years, to have three seasons in a row in the Premier League is something that probably the last 10, 15 years didn't happen with Fulham Football Club.

"We all know how it's been tough for us, how it's been challenging for us as well, but the way we have been getting this job done has been really enjoyable for all of us.

"This season – I've been saying to you, but I will say it again – when we have been playing at our best level, we have been really strong, enjoyable to see, to watch, and achieving great results for the football club.

"I cannot hide to you, in one moment of the season, before the last international break, my ambition, my feeling, I expected us to fight for something more.

"You know myself, I'm always a really ambitious person, but not just because of ambition, because of what I see every single day in the training sessions. For many reasons [it didn't happen], and that is for me to analyse why and to take the conclusions that I need.

"After the international break, we had some lack of consistency in some moments, some games that didn't allow us to be in a position right now with more points.

"The margins are really small to win a game, or to draw or lose a game in the Premier League. The margins are really small, all the details play a big part in it, and in some games we were not at our best level.

"Because of that, we haven't won some points that were really important for us. But definitely another successful season for us again.

"After the last summer and all the noise around our football club, and all that stuff, everybody started to talk about second season syndrome. A lot of noise because we lost our main goal scorer and a player that was so, so important for me.

"We were able to rebuild everything again, around different players in the attack line, and the reality is that we did that in a very good way. And the last five months, no-one spoke about the player that we lost, even if it was a fantastic striker.

"Looking forward for the next season, no-one can stand still in this football club. It's going to be much more competitive, much, much more.

"As you know, we are going to lose some players. One of them is Tosin. He's at the end of his contract, he's going to leave the Club. Let's see what we can do with the others who are at the end of contract."

Bernd Leno's appearance at Kenilworth Road meant he was one of just six players to feature in every single minute of the Premier League season.

Reports this week suggested he has ruled himself out of the upcoming European Championships in his homeland due to an injury, and his Head Coach was able to clarify the situation.

"In his right shoulder, he has a small problem there," Silva explained. "He's not going to need surgery, or something as serious as that, but he needs this time to recover, to get treatment in that shoulder, for him to be ready for pre-season."

Jimenez scores twice as Fulham win at Luton
Luton 2-4 Fulham

Raul Jimenez scored twice as Fulham ended their season with a win.

In an entertaining encounter at Kenilworth Road, Adama Traore opened the scoring with a fiercely-struck effort from the edge of the box – the first of three goals in as many minutes at end of the first half.

Carlton Morris equalised with a penalty after Antonee Robinson brought down Chiedozie Ogbene before Jimenez side-footed home after being teed up by Harry Wilson.

Jimenez added his second early in the second half when he headed in a Harrison Reed free-kick but Alfie Doughty kept Luton in the game with a low free-kick that found the bottom corner of Bernd Leno's net.

Wilson struck the bar with a fine free-kick before he scored the goal his performance deserved with a superb finish to cap off a fine flowing move from the Whites.

The victory ensured a 13th-place finish for Fulham.

Fulham: Leno, Tete, Bassey, Ream, Robinson (Ballo-Toure 78); Palhinha (Castagne 91), Reed (Cairney 76); Traore (De Cordova-Reid 91), Wilson, Iwobi; Jimenez (Muniz 90).
Subs not used: Rodak, Broja, Pereira, Willian.

Luton 2-4 Fulham: Cottagers send the Hatters back to the Championship with a defeat courtesy of a brace from Raul Jimenez, either side of long-range strikes from Adama Traore and Harry Wilson

Marco Silva's side ended the campaign in 13th place on an impressive 47 points
Luton's survival attempt ends in failure after finishing six points from safety

It was not a day to believe in miracles after all. Luton, as they have done all season, gave their all one last time but had relegation confirmed with a final-day defeat to Fulham.

A brace from Raul Jimenez between two beautiful long-range strikes from Adama Traore and Harry Wilson saw the Cottagers condemn Rob Edwards' proud side at Kenilworth Road.

But by Jove, they gave it a go. Carlton Morris scored from the spot and Alfie Doughty beat everyone with a low free-kick into the bottom corner. Tahith Chong had an early goal ruled out for offside.

Rob Edwards' side went down fighting.

In truth, any dreams of a shock survival died after 78 seconds when news filtered into the ground that Nottingham Forest had taken the lead at Burnley.

Raul Jimenez (middle left) proved to be the winner for Fulham with a brace at Kenilworth Road

Adama Traore opened the scoring with a fierce strike in the 43rd minute of the fixture

Harry Wilson put the result beyond doubt and restored Fulham's two-goal advantage

Luton had not only needed to win and for Forest to lose but with a 12-goal swing thrown into the bargain.

'We're going to win 12-0,' sang the Luton fans before kick-off. In the end, even that wouldn't have been enough.

Luton's impressive young manager knew any real flickering hopes had died last week with defeat at West Ham.

'Now we've had a taste of dining at the top table, all I can think about – and all we should be focusing on now – is ensuring that we get back there again,' said Edwards in his programme notes.

For many, it was a miracle Luton had pulled up a chair at this table at all. This was, after all, a team that was in League Two six years ago and in non-league four years before that.

For many, too, they expected Luton to be the whipping boys. But, under Edwards, they punched above their weight and took their fate, mathematically at least to the final day, even if that was also partly thanks to Forest being handed a four-point deduction for financial misdemeanours.

How different it could have been too. They led Arsenal here but lost to a 97th-minute Declan Rice winner. Aston Villa snatched a late victory here too. The night Hatters fans will long look back on was the replayed game against Bournemouth when they led 3-0 at half-time but still lost the game.

They depart the Premier League with their heads held high and memories to savour. They did the double over Everton. They beat Newcastle here and played put a 4-4 thriller at St James's Park.

Edwards and the club earned great credit, too, with how well they handled seeing their captain Tom Lockyer collapse on the pitch during a game at Bournemouth in December.

Luton have more than played their part.

Even as Forest coasted at Burnley and the acceptance of their own fate grew, the Luton fans still cheered and roared and groaned and jeered. They squeezed out every moment of the final few hours of their Premier League adventure until the referee blew his whistle for the last time and then they cheered some more and sang even louder.

'We are proud of you all,' read one unfurled banner. 'We are Luton Town and we will be back.'

Perhaps they'll need another miracle to return to the top table but with Edwards at the helm, you wouldn't write them off producing another.

Jimenez's double downs Luton
Raul Jimenez bagged a brace as Fulham ran out comfortable winners at Luton Town on the last day of the Premier League season, confirming the Hatters' relegation and allowing Marco Silva's side to climb above Wolverhampton Wanderers into thirteenth place in the final table.

An entertaining encounter, played with little tension as Luton's hopes of a twelve-goal swing in their favour on the final were dealt an early blow by Chris Wood opening the scoring for Nottingham Forest in the second minute, saw Rob Edwards' side miss a number of presentable chances in stark contrast to their opponents. Fulham, who had only won one of their last eight matches in a disappointing end to a commendable campaign, were clinical in front of goal despite Silva making six changes to his starting line-up.

The visitors dominated possession in the early summer sunshine, in front of Tony and Shahid Khan, but their only sight of goal was an outrageous effort from the halfway line by Joao Palhinha. Bernd Leno, who was ruled out of this summer's European Championships due to a longstanding shoulder injury earlier this week, showed no ill effects as he dashed from his line and prevented Carlton Morris from chipping Luton into the lead after the striker had turned sharply in the penalty area.

Harry Wilson, afforded a start on the right flank, curled a trademark effort wide after linking up with Alex Iwobi before a strong spell from the hosts saw Jordan Clark's shot deflected away for a corner by the covering Calvin Bassey and Daiki Hashioka wasting a glorious chance on the half volley after he ghosted in at the far post. Tahith Chong did then have the ball in the net after Leno had failed to hold a shot from Chiedozie Ogbene – but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Former Fulham academy graduate Elijah Adebayo probably should have given Rob Edwards' men the lead when he beat a faulty offside trap, but Leno saved superbly with his feet. Raul Jimenez, starting up front for the Cottagers, then wasted a glorious chance of his own when he somehow headed an inviting cross from Adama Traore wide of goal from close range. But that miss was soon academic as Traore took matters into his own hands, thundering a low strike into the corner after being found by Wilson following a poor clearance from Thomas Kaminski.

Luton levelled within three minutes when Bassey brought down Ogbene in the box after the winger had seen a shot blocked by Antonee Robinson. Morris stepped up to send Leno the wrong way from the penalty spot, but Fulham still went in ahead at half-time with Jimenez restoring their lead after a sweeping move from the restart. The veteran striker celebrated becoming the record Mexican appearance holder in the Premier League by stroking in a sumptuous finish from Wilson's cut back.

Jimenez was at it again just four minutes after the interval. The former Wolves forward showed his prowess in the air, glancing a Harrison Reed free-kick in via the far post to give Silva's side a two-goal cushion. To their immense credit, Luton continued to commit bodies forward and reduced the deficit through a low free-kick from Alfie Doughty within six minutes, but Fulham always looked to have another gear available.

Wilson went agonisingly close to making it four – hitting the crossbar from a clever free-kick after the ball was rolled into his path by Reed. But the Welshman got his goal nine minutes later, curling past Kaminski after unselfish play from the excellent Traore. There might have been more goals for the Whites in the closing stages with substitute Tom Cairney seeing a superb strike thwarted by substitute goalkeeper James Shea before Bobby De Cordova-Reid stabbed an effort into the side netting from a short corner.

But Fulham's first final day win since 2017 and a first league double over Luton since 1954 was a fine way to finish another commendable top flight campaign before the travelling supporters afforded first team coach Luis Boa Morte an emotional send-off following the final whistle as the Fulham favourite prepares to take over as national team coach of Guinea-Bisseau.

LUTON TOWN (3-4-3): Kaminski (Shea 76); Osho, Hashioka, Mengi (Johnson 17); Clark (Mpanzu 70), Lokonga, Ogbene (Townsend 76); Morris, Chong, Adebayo (Woodrow 76). Subs (not used): Krul, Berry, Onyedinma, Piesold.

Fulham Conclude Season with Sharp Win Over Luton

Match Review: Fulham Triumph Over Luton in Season Finale
Fulham's Tactical Brilliance Overpowers Luton

In a dramatic conclusion to the Premier League season, Fulham secured a commanding victory against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road, with Raul Jimenez playing a pivotal role by scoring twice. As the final whistle blew, Fulham had decisively beaten the already-relegated Luton, outlining the difference in quality and readiness between the two sides.

Key Moments That Defined the Game
The match saw Fulham assert their dominance just before halftime, thanks to Adama Traore's flawless strike into the bottom corner. However, Luton momentarily drew level after Calvin Bassey's controversial foul on Chiedozie Ogbene led to Carlton Morris coolly converting a penalty.

Yet, Fulham's response was swift and lethal. Jimenez restored their lead with a sleek finish from Harry Wilson's assist during the dying seconds of the first half. Shortly after the break, Jimenez again outsmarted the Luton defence to head in his second goal from Harrison Reed's free-kick, further solidifying Fulham's lead.

Despite Alfie Doughty's spirited free-kick finding the net and giving Luton a glimmer of hope, Wilson's exquisite curler from the edge of the area ensured Fulham maintained a comfortable margin.

Luton's Defensive Woes Lead to Relegation
Luton's defensive struggles were glaringly apparent as they concluded the season with an 11th home defeat, a record for the club in the top flight. They conceded a total of 85 league goals, a number surpassed only by Sheffield United and Darmstadt in Europe's top five leagues. Despite a lack of victories in their final six matches, Luton did manage to score in their last seven games, a testament to their fighting spirit, culminating in Morris leading the team with 11 league goals.

Wilson's Stellar Performance
Harry Wilson was in exceptional form, becoming the first Fulham player since Dimitar Berbatov in 2012 to be directly involved in three Premier League goals in a single match. His goal and dual assists were crucial, with his final goal capping off a masterful display and ensuring Fulham ended their season on a high note.

As Luton prepares for life in the Championship, their fans remained in the stands long after the match, applauding their team's effort throughout the season. Meanwhile, Fulham's performance, particularly from key players like Wilson and Jimenez, highlighted their potential and ambition heading into the next season.

The victory was a fitting end to Fulham's campaign, characterized by tactical intelligence and clinical finishing, promising exciting prospects for the future.

Silva salutes 'great' Fulham finale
Marco Silva professed himself very pleased as Fulham signed off their season in some style by beating Luton Town 4-2 at Kenilworth Road this afternoon.

The Fulham head coach felt his side's display augured well for next season with strong individual performances from Raul Jimenez, Harry Wilson and Adama Traore. Silva told his post-match press conference:

"Of course, when you win a football match in the last Premier League match, it's always really important to finish on a high, to finish with a good performance. A good result, definitely, and a good performance, too. Three points that we deserved, clearly. It was nice to see us finish the season like we started, with an away win. Unfortunately for us, that's something that played a big part in our season, we were not able to be consistent away from home, but it was good for us to finish [with a win].

Some great goals, the way we scored the second goal, for example, great open play moment from ourselves. The way we scored the four goals, and some other moments we had during the match, was really important. Some individual performances at a very good level. Our frontline, I have to mention how Raúl was always the player to link that high pressure that they tried to do every time, with the man-on-man situation. The way we were able to use Raúl to be the key man to link our game, was a really good performance from him."

There were some very good moments from Adama as well. Very good performance from Harry Wilson, very good. It was nice to see our frontline perform really well."

Silva was disappointed with the way some sloppy defending allowed Luton back into the game.

"The negatives, clearly, was the way we conceded the two goals. We should have avoided both goals – the first one, the penalty, and the second one from a wide free-kick."

The Portuguese boss reiterated that he feels the Whites could reflect with real pride on a second consecutive season in the top flight – especially as they secured safety long before the final day.

"Another successful season for this football club, I'm 100 per cent sure. We all know how it's been tough for us, how it's been challenging for us as well, but the way we have been getting this job done has been really enjoyable for all of us. This season – I've been saying to you, but I will say it again – when we have been playing at our best level, we have been really strong, enjoyable to see, to watch, and achieving great results for the football club.

I cannot hide to you, in one moment of the season, before the last international break, my ambition, my feeling, I expected us to fight for something more. You know myself, I'm always a really ambitious person, but not just because of ambition, because of what I see every single day in the training sessions. For many reasons [it didn't happen], and that is for me to analyse why and to take the conclusions that I need.

After the international break, we had some lack of consistency in some moments, some games that didn't allow us to be in a position right now with more points. The margins are really small to win a game, or to draw or lose a game in the Premier League. The margins are really small, all the details play a big part in it, and in some games we were not at our best level. Because of that, we haven't won some points that were really important for us. But definitely another successful season for us again.

After the last summer and all the noise around our football club, and all that stuff, everybody started to talk about second season syndrome. A lot of noise because we lost our main goal scorer and a player that was so, so important for me. We were able to rebuild everything again, around different players in the attack line, and the reality is that we did that in a very good way. Wilson delighted with 'important win'
Harry Wilson was delighted that Fulham signed off their season in style with an enterprising victory at Luton Town this afternoon.

The Welsh winger made the most of his opportunity to start after Marco Silva made six changes – scoring one and setting up two more goals in a comfortable Fulham win. He shared his delight with FFCTV after the final whistle:

"It was really important. We spoke about it before the game – we wanted to finish with a good performance, with a win and a few goals. We managed to do that. It was really important to make sure we went into the summer break and next season with a win."

Wilson was pleased to get on the scoresheet after missing a good chance in the first half and hitting the bar with a well-worked free-kick, heaping praise on Adama Traore for creating the sort of opportunity he thrives upon.

"Adama's set was perfect for me to run onto it first time and then it was just about trying to control it. I think I had a big bit of the goal to aim at. The defender was kind of in a great position for me to bend it round him. Like I said, it was just about controlling it, keeping it on target and I was delighted when it went in.

A few of the boys have probably been frustrated with the playing time that they've had. I think Adama – when he comes on in games – he's always a threat with his pace and power. It was great for him to get his goal today; what a strike that was, we know he's got the power to do that. Raul had a purple patch halfway through the season when he scored some goals, it was great for him to get his goals today."

Wilson insisted that Fulham have done well to avoid the second season syndrome by comfortably avoiding relegation and feels this campaign has been a positive one – on balance.

"As a whole, we have to be pleased with it. The second season back in the Premier League has proved to be difficult for some teams where they've gone down: they've had a good first season they've struggled. For us to have been safe for the majority of the season has been a credit to us. The last month or two we've been disappointed with because going into the international break with that 3-0 win over Spurs, we were potentially looking at a European spot. To get the results that we have has been frustrating. When we look back as a whole, we have to be pleased with it – but we have to make sure that we build ready for next season."

Fulham must be 'really assertive' in transfer window – Silva
Marco Silva insisted Fulham must be "really assertive" during this summer's transfer window after their 13th-placed finish in the Premier League.

The Whites ended their campaign with a 4-2 win at Luton and boss Silva was asked afterwards if perhaps he had taken Fulham as far as possible and if he expected to still be at the club next season.

He replied: "I have a contract. That's it. Simple as that.

"About if we got our maximum or not, I have to say if you look at the season it was another successful season for this football club.

"To have three seasons in a row in the Premier League is something that in the last 10 to 15 years didn't happen with Fulham.

"We all know it's been challenging for us, but the way we have been getting this job done has been really enjoyable for all of us.

"We have been good to watch and achieving great results. I cannot hide that in one moment of the season, before the international break, my ambition and my feeling, I expected us probably to fight for something more.

"Myself, I am always a really ambitious person, but not just because I have ambition but (because of) what I see every single day in training sessions.

"It is for me to analyse why (Fulham didn't do better) and take the conclusions that I need."

Fulham will lose out-of-contract defender Tosin Adarabioyo, who has rejected a new deal, and Silva is adamant that reinforcements are needed if the club is to progress.

He said: "No-one can stand still in this football club. It's going to be much more competitive.

"For us to be at the same level in terms of squad, we have to have a very good two months (of transfers) in front of us.

"And if you want to do better and want to be stronger then those two months have to be almost perfect for us.

"Our fans I know will expect more. We all want more. And for that to happen we must be really assertive in the next two months. We need to be assertive and add good quality."
