Currently the most points in the prem per pounds spent.

Credit to a great blend of brilliant work from our transfer team and trust in an elite coach getting the most from those coming in, and it's working wonders at this point. Love to see it.

£3.5m combined for 2 of the best fullbacks in the league, and probably in our history, has to be some of the best business the clubs ever done. Bravo all involved

Somerset Fulham

We erm, did have a fullback that won the World Cup mate.

I mean, it's impressive but it's a bloody low benchmark. Essentially we can finish 17th in the actual table and still be one of the better-ranked clubs in this "efficiency" list.

This isn't quite the same thing though, is it?

If we were 17th, our points per pounds spent wouldn't be anywhere near where it is now, and we certainly wouldn't be ranked number one.

Correct

Plus having the 17th highest spend and being 10 places higher than that in performance is the point anyway? That suggests indeed that were pulling off good value transfers.

We've been told for years now, as a club our size, the approach is intended to be geared towards balancing sustainability with putting out competitive teams. Job done as things stand then. We're successfully identifying and nurturing talent without spending a fortune on it which hopefully means we can continue to sustain such competitiveness and have comfortable wiggle room and no ffp drama for years to come. Great.👍🏼

"2 of the best", was phrased this way partly for this reason

That said, football has come a LONG way since 1966. I think it fair to say modern players are far more athletic and the game itself a much higher level, especially with all the science that goes into it all, plus there's far more competition globally to compete against these days to get a starting place in a prem club these days, Meant with no disrespect to prior legends of course. Cohen undoubtedly one of the best of his era

I didn't say we'd be ranked #1. But we'd be ranked in the top half, with more clubs below us than above us, which would imply positive performance. Whereas frankly IMO, there's nothing positive about this club finishing 17th.

I guess it depends on expectations. If you're content for us to be like Dyche's Burnley, living hand to mouth, congratulating ourselves for finishing 13th every year despite spending less than everyone else, great.

Personally I'd be happy for us to have the 7th highest spend in the league (which would be a net spend around £50m per year rather than our current average of £25m) and finish 7th in the actual table. But that would of course drop us to about mid-table in this efficiency ranking.

But nobody's talking about us finishing 17th apart from you. We're clearly not going to finish in that position.

This table just shows how well we are performing vs how much we've spent, and on that criteria, we're doing a lot better than the rest of the league. I'd far rather be top of this table than at the bottom, effectively wasting huge amounts of money and not having anything to show for it.

Personally, I think we can press for a European place this season, particularly if we strengthen up front, but it's a sign of how good a job Marco is doing, and how well we've recruited that we're in this position at all.
