Marco Silva praises 'quality' Aston Villa for what they did during win over Fulham
Marco Silva praises 'quality' Aston Villa for what they did during win over Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva spoke after his side's away defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday. The Cottagers took an early lead through Raul Jimenez, who was eventually lost through injury, but in search of their first win of the season, Villa rallied back with an Ollie Watkins goal before half-time.

John McGinn scored just after the break, and Emi Buendia scored to wrap things up. It was a frustrating result for Fulham, who will have felt there was an opportunity to take home at least a point having gone into half-time on level terms.

Speaking after the game, Fulham boss praised Villa for their reaction and admitted his side struggled in the second half. "Completely two different halves, that is true," he said. "Very good start from ourselves, I think the way we started the game was very, very good.

"Good goal from Raúl – prepared and executed from the players. Great corner, and very good header from Raúl. We knew how the game was going to be after that moment – I think we did use the high line really very well until the equaliser.

"Some good moments one-v-one with [Emiliano] Martinez with Josh [King], the other one with Josh as well, with Matty Cash in front of him. Some good, dangerous moments from us and always we were very well organised in our backline.

"We knew that they were going to try to get in behind, and that's what hurts me more, because we knew it, we planned for it, we knew the way the ball is going to go in behind for Watkins or for another player. And because of that, I think that we have to blame ourselves for the way we conceded the three goals. I think we were too soft for the level that the Premier League demands at a side with the individual quality they have.

"The game was completely under control from ourselves – leading the score, more chances to score the second. And to concede the equaliser, from a long ball from a defender, you cannot concede that goal at this level that we are playing. Because of that, we have to blame ourselves – things that you can control. Things that you cannot control... it's happened too often this season so far for Fulham, and this afternoon was again another good example.

"It was a good reaction from [Villa], they equalised the game after the 1-0 and our very good start. Of course it gave them some confidence, the game was much more balanced in that moment, and after we were punished by the way we started the second half.

"It was a moment for us to react again, to start strong. We spoke at half-time, things to adjust, and we conceded two really poor goals, to be honest. We lost one ball from Adama in that moment, yes, but the way our two midfielders were set up on the pitch, we have to be much more in control of that moment. And the third goal was more or less the same situation. And, of course, when these things happen, it's going to be much more difficult for us."

'Strong blow to hip' – Fulham player's entourage provide injury clarity
Fulham manager Marco Silva mainly used Raúl Jiménez as a substitute at the start of this season. That's already seen rumours linking him with a move back to Mexico in January.

Last Tuesday, we covered claims from Mexico that the striker has been recovering from a muscle strain. Therefore, the Fulham manager hasn't utilised him regularly so far.

On Sunday, the Mexico international started for Fulham in their 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa. He opened the scoring in the third minute before being forced off the pitch due to injury.

Claro Sports say his injury 'raised alarm bells' ahead of the upcoming international break.

The outlet got in touch with his entourage for an update. Spurces close to the 34-year-old have assured them his latest injury 'is not serious'.

It's claimed the frontman suffered a 'strong blow to the hip' and his entourage claim he will only need two to three days to recover from his injury.

The same source also told Claro Sports that Jiménez will continue to train alone for the next few days. He's not at risk of missing Fulham's match against AFC Bournemouth on October 4th.

The 'news is reassuring' for both Jiménez and Marco Silva's side.

Player Ratings: Aston Villa 3-1 Fulham
Here are your player ratings for Fulham's defeat at Villa Park.

Fulham's mental frailties under Marco Silva and another dose of abhorrent officiating both showed their ugly faces in this one as Fulham capitulated from a goal ahead to comfortably fall to defeat at Villa Park.

Bernd Leno

The brutal truth is that Leno was far less to blame for the three goals than the catastrophic defending that led to them. For the first goal, maybe better positioning could have prevented being lobbed by Watkins, but ultimately it felt like he had to react to the poor defensive play of our centre-back pairing. Thought his distribution was stronger than normal too. 6/10

Timothy Castagne

I think he stepped into Tete's shoes rather admirably here. It still frustrates me that it takes him about an hour before he allows himself to step into his opposition's half and show any attacking intent, but some of his balls over the top for Wilson to chase caused issues for Villa. Defended better than any of the rest of the back four in my eyes, with the most defensive actions, but also may have been lucky not to face punishment for a rash tackle on Digne. 6.5/10

Joachim Andersen

For the most part he was OK, but really there are two things I want to pick at. Firstly, misjudging the flight of the ball over the top to Watkins when the England international equalised was poor. My main gripe, however: if this man is going to be frequently wearing the armband going forward, as has been suggested and encouraged, you have to show better leadership when things are falling apart at the back and momentum is against you. Andersen just seemed to hide in those calamitous moments at the start of the second half, which wasn't good enough. 5.5/10

Calvin Bassey

I'm not far off suggesting that Jorge Cuenca gets a Premier League start. Bassey reacts so slowly to Watkins going through on goal for Villa's first and like Joa, doesn't defend greatly throughout. But his confidence on the ball is just absolutely shot to pieces and it's so obvious to see. So often he was caught in possession and just looked so slack, an error early on in the game nearly saw McGinn equalise from the edge of the box. Whether the events of the United game have stayed in his head, his form and confidence needs to turn quickly with Fulham facing a difficult run of Premier League fixtures. 4/10

Ryan Sessegnon

Well, Sess isn't the man I thought we would deploy in this 2025 long throw in renaissance era, but here we are. It turns out he's got a solid lob on him. Was quite frustrated at how little he was trying to overlap throughout considering that's such a strong part of his game from left back. Nice to see Sess still try to be positive at 3-1 down when it looked like some others had thrown it. 6/10

Sander Berge

I'm not sure where to start here but I thought Berge was dire. When fans are starting to wonder what a player offers beyond ball retention, to have a game where your first touch is constantly poor and you're losing possession relentlessly is not a great look. He was overran in midfield constantly and completed just one tackle. No key passes, no shots, no completed dribbles past a Villa player. Berge was completely off it here. 3/10

Sasa Lukic

Like Berge, thought Lukic was overrun in midfield too and as a result in the first half acquired a fourth yellow of the season (side note, it's impressive how often he gets yellows but never gets sent off). The difference came in how Lukic continues to add more to his game going forward, with two shots and two key passes here. I've said in recent weeks he was due an assist from a corner, and while I expected Joa to profit from one, Raul will do. 6/10

Josh King

I'll get the controversial negative out of the way; despite the bias of many Fulham fans, King absolutely dives and it's a habit he has to eliminate from his game. The boy has to wise up and either let Martinez initiate contact or push the ball gently and score, anything but diving. Bar that, he was by far the best player on the pitch. It's incredible how confident he is in his talents. His decision making on the ball is amazing for his age and could've led to a goal early on as Martinez was forced to save low, and a penalty when his next strike on goal was prevented controversially without punishment by Cash's arm. He seems desperate for his moment to arrive, and it will, just not by cheating, please Joshua. 8/10 – Man of the match

Harry Wilson

I thought he read Castagne's long balls really well throughout and made a number of quality runs in behind. One particular one may have seem him offside, but on the off-chance he wasn't he definitely should've finished past Martinez when he went through one on one 15 minutes in. Loved how aggressive Harry was in his duels too, putting in a couple of potentially uncharacteristically meaty challenges in the first half to make his mark. 6.5/10

Alex Iwobi

A really hard-working display that potentially went under the radar considering his lack of attacking output on the day. Iwobi was constantly providing defensive cover for Sessegnon to allow the pair to cope with the threat posed by Cash and Guessand. While the attacking moments were limited, his roaming into the centre in possession allowed King to find plenty of space in the left channels. 6.5/10

Raul Jimenez played only a few minutes and annoyingly got injured, but scored a gorgeous header to put us ahead.

Substitutes
Adama Traore

He had the rare pressure of coming on just 10 minutes in to play a position he was extremely unfamiliar with. Though it was poor for Adama to give the ball away for the second goal, I don't think he had the disaster-class some fans want to accuse him of. The pressing wasn't great and a couple of late passes were overhit around him, which was frustrating. Really liked in the first half especially how he made so many runs through the middle which occupied the centre-halves so frequently and allowed Wilson and King tonnes of space around the box. His crosses continue to look more dangerous and composed, too. 5.5/10

Emile Smith Rowe and Kevin came on 65 minutes in with Silva looking to change the game, but sadly neither were able to influence the game. Smith Rowe was picking the ball up too deep to effect the game due to the team's inability to get the ball forward after going behind. Kevin, like every cameo post-Leeds, was all fart and no poo. 6/10 for both

Samuel Chukwueze was perhaps the pick of the second half subs, looking especially dangerous in his 10-minute cameo as he was brought on alongside Antonee Robinson. Chuk showed frequent willingness to run across the front line, as he did against Cambridge, and had a decent effort go over the bar. Jedi finally added some overlapping impetus on the wing from full-back but bar that was ineffective. Both came on too late to be fairly assessed.

Marco Silva
There are a few positives to look at to start with. Lukic's corners continue to prevail and adding Sessegnon as a long throw threat continues to show we can add set piece prowess to our game again this season. I quite liked the Adama sub, but ultimately why on earth is he selecting three wingers on the bench with young Kusi-Asare in reserve?

Beyond that, there are lots of negatives I'm afraid. Berge and Lukic were constantly being run over; Fulham lacked leadership and Silva simply couldn't fix the swing of momentum. Instead of going more positive, Silva made like-for-like changes in the front four that made little to no difference in the game because tactically nothing had changed and Villa had us sussed at a time when they were full of confidence.

His stubbornness to change things cost us and his inability to fix things from a mentality point of view is a reoccurring issue over multiple seasons. Ever since the FA Cup day at Old Trafford with the red cards, Silva has shown time after time that he can lose it, but when he does, so does his team. His passion is regularly infectious, but sometimes he could do well to almost shut up and set a better example. 4/10

Aston Villa 3-1 Fulham: Villa break winless streak as VAR controversy hurts Fulham again
The Villans came from behind to secure a win of vital importance.

Aston Villa and Ollie Watkins both broke their barren spells as Unai Emery's side claimed their first win of the Premier League season and the striker bagged his first goal in nine games.

Watkins' goal ended what had been the joint worst run of his career and helped start the Villa fightback after a dismal start which included multiple VAR interventions.

As it happened
Fulham took the lead through a trademark Raúl Jiménez header when the game had hardly even begun. Villa switched off from a corner and found themselves staring at yet another defeat which would have only loudened the conversations regarding Emery's future. However, fortunes quickly turned as Jiménez had to go off injured and Villa carved out some slight opportunities on Bernd Leno's goal.

One of the consistent bright sparks in Fulham's season so far has been 18-year old Josh King. The Englishman has been a regular for the Cottagers and started to dominate proceedings as the first half went on. He began breezing past Villa defenders and setting up chances including one for Harry Wilson, who had his effort saved by Emiliano Martínez. The hosts responded with chances of their own and John McGinn was unlucky to not take advantage of brilliantly winning back possession, as his eventual shot curled past the post.

King thought he had given his side a penalty to double the Fulham lead after he snuck past the Villa defence and looked to have been brought down by Martínez, but the keeper was judged to have made no contact with the teenager, who was controversially booked for simulation without VAR intervention. King's incredible first half performance continued but it proved to be largely in vain, as Watkins finally made his mark.

The Englishman had failed to net in his previous nine Premier League appearances but found a way past Leno in the 37th minute after one long ball cut right through the Fulham defence before the striker puts away his first of the season with confidence and assurance that will help him and Villa in spades.

The confidence gained from the Watkins' equaliser was clear to see and Villa began to dominate proceedings not long after. Their control carried over from the first half, as McGinn and Emiliano Buendía scored in quick succession to take the game away from Marco Silva's side. After that it was a matter of seeing out the result for Aston Villa, who had faced a much criticism after their thus far poor start to the season with speculation surrounding Emery going into the game.

Such a convincing win will do wonders for Villa's confidence as they attempt to rescue their poor start to the season and challenge in the league again. As for Watkins, their number nine firing again will give Emery's side an even bigger boost for the remainder of the season.

Fulham travel to Bournemouth on Friday aiming to recover from such a disappointing result and rescue their otherwise fine start to the season.

The lineups

AVI: Martínez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne; McGinn, Bogarde; Guessand, Elliott, Rogers; Watkins

FUL: Leno; Castagne, Anderson, Bassey, Sessegnon; Lukić, Berge; Wilson, King, Iwobi, Jiménez

Fulham doing everything to agree deal for 'fantastic' player after confirmed news
Fulham lost momentum after a 3-1 battering from Aston Villa despite winning three games on the bounce in all competitions.

Ex-refs chief Keith Hackett exclusively told Football Insider that Fulham should have been awarded a penalty against Aston Villa on 28 September.

Marco Silva will feel aggrieved that decisions didn't go their way as they dropped vital points against Unai Emery's out-of-form side.

Yet, it wasn't all bad with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards praising the performance of Josh King against Aston Villa.

The youngster is the future for the Cottagers as they turn their attention to pinning down other stars at the club.

Fulham ramp up Harry Wilson contract talks amid Leeds interest
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the Portuguese is focused on extending Harry Wilson's stay at Craven Cottage.

Silva is a huge fan of the Welshman and has described him as an "important" and "fantastic" player, showing he wants him to stay at the club (The Independent, 18 May).

Sources told Football Insider on 26 September that Leeds continue to closely monitor Wilson which has prompted Fulham to speed up contract talks.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: "I'm sure Wilson himself right now just wants to focus on playing regularly for Fulham and contributing for Marco Silva's team.

"He's been there for five years now as well. So he's obviously settled in West London as well. So Fulham will be hoping they can convince the former Liverpool youngster to signing a contract extension as well.

"The more and more it drags on, it probably means the chances of Leeds landing them are fading away in that respect, because I'm sure Fulham will be doing everything they can to keep hold of them.

"If Wilson doesn't decide a new contract at Fulham, he could explore his options as a free agent in summer. And I'm sure there'll be more than just Leeds who will be looking at them."

Kevin's progress could determine Wilson's future at Fulham
Kevin joined Fulham on transfer deadline day in the summer and has already caught the eye of fans and pundits alike.

The 22-year-old left Shakhtar Donetsk as a highly gifted left-winger with the Cottagers forking out a substantial fee to bring him to the Premier League.

At such a young age, the Brazilian will need a period of adjustment to not only the league but also a new country.

Yet, he has hit the ground running and will continue to be trusted more and more by Silva if he maintains his promising performance levels.

Fulham may prioritise Kevin over Wilson with the versatile Alex Iwobi moving to the right-hand side in the near future.

The Welshman could be threatened by the wonderkid and opt to leave as a free agent in the summer of 2026.

Ex-FIFA ref warns Joshua King to 'behave' after controversial Aston Villa vs Fulham incident
Joshua King could have been shown more empathy following his involvement in Fulham's defeat to Aston Villa.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that referee Andy Madley did not have to caution the 18-year-old for simulation at Villa Park.

Raul Jimenez fired the Cottagers ahead after just three minutes, and 19 minutes later, Marco Silva's side thought they were going to be given the chance to score again from the penalty spot.

Joshua King saw his goal against Chelsea cruelly disallowed, and it was the young midfielder who appeared to be brought down by Emi Martinez in the penalty area before he was booked for diving.

Joshua King is creating an unwanted impression at Fulham
Many were baffled by the decision to sanction the player for simulation, but having also picked up a yellow card for diving against Brentford, it will not be a good look for the youngster.

While he has yet to open his account for the Cottagers, there is no doubt that the player is very talented, and the result could have been very different had the penalty been awarded on Sunday, 28 September.

Instead, substitute Emi Buendia made an instant impact for Villa, with Ollie Watkins already scoring the equaliser, as he supplied the assist for John McGinn before scoring the third just two minutes later.

Looking back at the incident, it is unclear exactly what was running through King's mind in that split second, but either way, Hackett wants him to be careful so as not to get himself sent off.

Referees told to take more leniency with Fulham gem
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee said: "It doesn't matter what his age is; he's on the field, so he's treated just like anyone else. The coaching staff will offer him advice.

"It's fantastic that an 18-year-old is involved in a Premier League game. I just think it shows how important the work of Howard Wilkinson was when he started discussing academies.

"We're lucky to have some of the world's best players, and we want them to behave. In this incident, there needs to be a bit of empathy between referees and players.

"The referee should have taken him to one side, explained that he saw the incident, and in normal terms, it would be a yellow card, but I won't give one because I want to avoid that.

"That's been lost from how we used to referee. We didn't sanitise the game; we still made mistakes. But there was a different approach with the relationships."

'Terrible news' – Player breaks foot after summer Fulham exit
Willian's return to Brazil has suffered a major setback. The midfielder, who left Fulham in the summer, broke a bone in his foot.

The 37-year-old picked up the injury during Grêmio's 3-1 win over Vitória on Sunday and is now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. That's especially disappointing given his arrival from Fulham was met with huge excitement.

He was forced off in the first half after a heavy knock to his right foot. Willian received initial treatment on the bench before tests later confirmed a fracture in the fifth metatarsal.

According to ESPN Brazil, the veteran is expected to be out for at least six weeks. The blow comes after a bright start to life back in Brazil. He had quickly impressed with strong displays in his first three games.

Willian had been reunited with former Fulham teammate Carlos Vinícius in Porto Alegre. That partnership will now be put on hold.

At 37, questions will naturally arise about his recovery and how quickly he can return to action, making this an untimely setback so soon after his Fulham exit.

Seven Things We Learnt From Aston Villa 3–1 Fulham
Fulham continue their awful Villa Park record in a strange game in the Second City. Postives? I've left Birmingham. Negatives? Plenty. Let's get stuck in.

Fulham Capitulate... Again: Fulham's Away to Struggles Persist?
What was most frustrating about today? It was a replay of large parts of last season. Fulham looked slick and dangerous in transition – a real threat at speed. However, like last season, Fulham lacked the cutting edge to finish off gilt-edged chances that could of seen the game off after an explosive first half display.

Like we have seen many times in the last few years, Fulham capitulated away from home. Once Aston Villa went ahead, the good start the Whites had in the first 45 went by the wayside.

Fulham couldn't get their heads sorted from the refereeing farce of the opening half – we saw the same at Stamford Bridge, we saw the same at Villa Park.

I gave Marco's men the excuse of a headless in Walham Green, I can't do the same for our Aston display. Nothing should excuse a contrast of halves that stark. If Fulham want to push into the top half this season – Marco has to change that mentality breakdown this team has away from home.

Six Games, One Good Performance In Full
Six games, two wins, two draws, two losses. Leeds away – a get-out-of-jail-free card. Brighton away – the same.

Contrasting halves against Manchester United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa leave Brentford at home as the only dazzling display London's Original have put in this season. Worrying.

That continues a finish to last season, characterised by three wins in the final ten games of the season – it's fair that was underwhelming to say the least.

Slide Down The Table Incoming?
Villa away felt like a litmus test. An opportunity to turn an average start to the season into a great one. A chance to gain consistency, a chance to make a statement. Fulham failed that test. We reverting to the mediocrity the that has proved the barrier between mid table monotony and historic achievement.

That has continued into this season. One good performance in full, and two promising halves worry me as to where Fulham will be after the three testing games Fulham have coming up – Bournemouth away, Arsenal at home, Newcastle away. Will Fulham be inside bottom six of the table on November the 1st? Probably.

Josh King: Fulham's Best Player?
Josh King gets better and better. I wax lyrical about the kid nigh-on every week, but his Villa Park display? Special.

In a game filled with hundreds of millions of pounds' worth of talent, the lad 'Straight Outta Motspur' lit up the joint.

His low centre of gravity allowed for some terrific twists and turns, while his football IQ allowed him to do what I outlined in the pre match preview: exploit the hal- spaces down that exposed, Lucas Digne left flank.

Josh should have won Fulham penalties, if he wasn't designated as PGMOL's public enemy number one. Direct, skilful, a difference-maker between the lines. He's clearly FFC's most talented player, he's our most impactful player, and he's our most consistent player.

Is it fair to say he's already our best?

Adama Traore: Lacking Effort and Technical Ability
I'll caveat this segment with a point of understanding. Adama is not a striker, his performance on the ball yesterday was far from disastrous. His runs beyond the Villa backline caused a lot of problems for the Villans in the first half. With that said, his off the ball application cannot be excused.

It wasn't just Sunday, it's been the case for weeks and weeks. If you weren't at the game yesterday, you may not understand, you may not of seen it even.

Adama off the ball is a complete liability. He demonstrates no willingness to fight for his teammates. If the ball is five yards in front of him, he may go through the motions and close it down. If there is an opportunity to into space in behind – Adama will run, he understands that's his lone strength.

Otherwise, his attitude screams of a man who had his sights set on Nuno's Nottingham Forest. I'd rather see players with a lower ceiling of performance play than somebody with an aptitude towards Fulham football club.

Kevin: Give Him Time
Post Leeds, has Kevin put in as good as performance as his opening one in black and white? Frankly, no. But that's more of a credit to Kevin than a knock on his last three appearances. Kevin's Leeds performance was off the debut Richter scale. Standing up to that level of performance every week? Impossible.

When Kev' signed, I spoke to 'Zorya Londonsk', a Ukrainian football expert website – their opinion mirrored what I expected: 'Kevin is raw'', ''give Kevin time''.

He is a 22 year old moving into a completely new environment, a different league. Silva moulding him away from his propensity to over dribble will take time, but with that said, I felt Kevin did do some damage yesterday.

Did all his moves come off? No, but he. tried to make things happen. Moves inside, give-and-gos, being direct.

He added some spark to a flat Fulham team. The nature of the Brazilian's game means his flicks, tricks, and slick interchanges of play won't always come off – but the proof of concept is there.

Fulham's Defensive Kryptonite Found: Balls In Behind
My praise for Joachim Andersen this season – never ending. His efforts for Villa's first, however – embarrassing.

We have seen Fulham targeted over the top numerous times in the opening times this season. Think Matheus Cuhna's chance from an Altay Bayindr long ball as a great example. Villa identified that has a weakness – particularly of Andersen, and utilised it to goal scoring effect.

We all understand Joa has strengths outside of athleticism, one of which is communication. If you can't match Watkins physically – outsmart him. Use your nous, step back, or direct Bassey behind on mop up duty.

A great Fulham's backline's kryptonite has been found – balls in behind. Utilise Calvin's athleticism, Marco get on the case!

When will Wycombe Wanderers play Fulham in the Carabao Cup?
A date has been set for when Wycombe Wanderers will play Fulham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The Chairboys have progressed into the last 16 of the competition for only the second time in their history.

The first and only time they reached this stage was during the 2006/07 season – the year they reached the semi-finals and lost to eventual winners, Chelsea.

Now, a date against the Blues' West London neighbours has been set, as the Whites will travel to Adams Park on Tuesday, October 28, kicking off at 7.45 pm.

There have been 12 meetings against Wycombe and Fulham in all competitions, with the Cottages securing victory on six occasions, Wanderers two, and four draws.

Additionally, by the time Wycombe face Marco Silva's side at the end of October, the Chairboys would have played Fulham's U21 team in the EFL Trophy.

The latter would be the fourth time the two sides would have met in the competition, with the previous encounters taking place in the 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2023/24 campaigns respectively.

Rangers sign £30m Brighton striker and Fulham gem in blockbuster January transfer window prediction
Could Russell Martin's Rangers launch a double raid on the Premier League when the transfer window opens in the new year?

You'd be hard-pressed to find a club in Britain that needs mid-season change in 2025/26 more than Rangers, as the 55-time Scottish champions sit eighth in the league with the pressure on new boss Russell Martin reaches boiling point.

So while we asked Grok to predict Rangers' 2026 January transfer window, the AI itself admitted that it doesn't believe Martin will be the manager by the start of February, putting his survival chances at "40/60".

Despite losing to Genk last week and playing over 45 minutes with 10 men, Martin insisted the character of the squad is good, telling media including the Daily Mail: "We're all together, I really feel that. Everyone's been really together through this period. And, like I said, if we can get through this period, which I really believe we will, we'll all be so much better for it.'

On the subject of his meeting with Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh after the latest defeat, Martin added: "The media love making out as if everyone is in a big conversation about 'Is he going? Is he staying? What's being said?'. But, generally, we chat about the football club, about what we can improve, about the performance, about the next game. We have a good conversation, honest conversation and it was the same again. So, there's nothing out of the ordinary with that."

Be that as it may, Rangers are currently enduring their worst start to the season in 47 years but their last gasp win over new boys Livingston did at least see them avoid the horrors of equalling their worst ever.

The good news is that Grok predicted Rangers to spend three times as much as Celtic when we put them through the AI - the depressing bit is that the reigning champions are already more than four times as good as The Gers based on the season so far.

Evan Ferguson heads trio of big-name arrivals
Evan Ferguson - £30 million from Brighton & Hove Albion - It's a long way from the nine-figure valuations Brighton once had for the 'next Harry Kane', when he burst onto the scene as a teenager.

Ferguson has actually never even hit more than 10 goals in a season though did net six Premier League goals in less than a thousand minutes in 2022/23. Since then injuries have taken their toll while aged 20, Ferguson has already racked up 24 caps for Ireland and been forced to carry the hopes and dreams of a nation on his shoulders since breaking through at Brighton.

He went goalless at West Ham and is so far yet to score for Rangers on loan, having already played almost 300 minutes in the league and in Europe. However, dropping down a level from a top five league to the Scottish Premiership could give Ferguson a chance he never had to develop his game in a more rounded fashion and if he can, the results will be spectacular.

Harry Wilson - £15m from Fulham - Wilson has started three of Fulham's five Premier League games so he's certainly not been cast aside by Marco Silva but the Cottagers were prepared to send him to Leeds on deadline day until the deal collapsed last-minute.

Though an established winger, Wilson's also played centrally for Fulham and elsewhere so his versatility and cerebral understanding of the game could be put to good use in attacking midfield to fill a void for Rangers.

City Women face Fulham on in WNL Cup Round One
Exeter City Women will host Fulham in Round One of the WNL Cup on Sunday, October 19 at the County Ground at Coach Road.

The Grecians finished top of Group B during the tournament's group phase, finishing with a 100% record after seeing off Portishead Town, Southampton PGA and Abingdon United.

City haven't played this incarnation of Fulham Women, however in January 1983, Exeter Ladies FC (as they were then known), faced 'Friends of Fulham' in front of what was described as a record crowd at Wyvern Barracks. That match was a Fourth Round FA Cup game, the first time the Grecians had reached that stage of the competition.

Ticket details will be confirmed!

Ryan Sessegnon speaks about an 'unusual' display from Fulham
The Cottagers coughed up an early lead in the Midlands.

Ryan Sessegnon was taken aback with a 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on the road. The fullback felt it was an "unusual" showing in which uncharacteristic mistakes gave the hosts a much easier time.

'It's just poor defending from us'

Fulham had beaten Leeds United 1-0 and Brentford 3-1 to bounce back from a three game winless streak in August, and came into this clash with the wind in their sails. Raul Jimenez ducked to steer a corner kick delivery from Sasa Lukic into the back of the net and the guests had gone into the lead.

"We started the game very well and then conceded quite a bizarre first goal."

Academy graduate Joshua King could have earned a penalty as he broke through on the goal, but the referee awarded him a yellow card. Then, at the other end of the field, Lucas Digne dug out a chipped ball to release a run of Ollie Watkins, and the striker lobbed Bernd Leno to get himself off the mark.

"But going into half-time at 1-1 is still a decent result, however we kind of just collapsed."

Fulham benefitted from the Bees collapsing on derby day, but the shoe would be on the other foot this time. Adama Traore turned over the ball, and Emiliano Buendia brought McGinn into the game with what would be a flicked assist as the Scotsman slotted a shot into the net from outside the penalty area. Then, Digne drove the ball down the line for Watkins, and the Argentine sub scored/

"We conceded one goal straight after half-time, which can happen, but to concede the next one straightaway was disappointing. The game was pretty much done after that. There are no real explanations, it's just poor defending from us."

Sessegnon sees this loss as a performance that came out of the blue, but it does not excuse the errors.

"It's quite unusual from us but we have to look back at the game and see where we went wrong. It was probably just lack of concentration, it was very bizarre."

Fulham injury news: Marco Silva receives 'positive' Raul Jimenez update
Fulham striker Raul Jimenez has reportedly avoided a serious injury after being forced off in Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

Jimenez was presented with the chance to make his second Premier League start of the season after fellow forward Rodrigo Muniz dropped out of the squad through injury.

The Mexico international made a positive impact on his return to the starting lineup, heading in from Sasa Lukic's corner to give Fulham a third-minute lead.

Unfortunately, Jimenez picked up an injury either in the process of scoring his goal or in the subsequent celebrations with his Fulham teammates.

Fulham receive Jimenez injury boost
Jimenez tried to continue before he was forced off and replaced by Adama Traore in the 11th minute, leaving his team to play the majority of the game without a natural centre-forward.

The Cottagers went on to lose 3-1 to Unai Emery's side following goals from Ollie Watkins, John McGinn and Emiliano Buendia.

While Jimenez's injury compounded the defeat, Claro Sports reports that the striker avoided a serious injury and instead suffered a 'strong blow' to his hip.

The current expectation is that the 34-year-old will only need two to three days to recover before he returns to full training with his teammates.

Will Jimenez be fit for Bournemouth clash?
As a result, there is hope that Jimenez will shake off the knock to make himself available for Fulham's final Premier League game before the October international break.

Marco Silva's charges will travel to the south coast for Friday's tricky meeting with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Silva will be desperate to have Jimenez available for the away trip, especially as it is unclear whether Muniz will be able to prove his fitness in time.

Jimenez boasts a promising record against Bournemouth, having scored five goals in his previous eight meetings, including an effort in last season's 2-2 home draw.
