Wolves and Fulham handed referee whose decisions sparked infamous Gary O'Neil 'crazy' meltdown
Wolves are back in Premier League action this weekend with an away trip to Craven Cottage to play Fulham

Wolves could do with getting something at Craven Cottage this weekend as they prepare to play Fulham. The Midlands outfit are yet to win in the Premier League so far this season. They find themselves in the drop zone along with Nottingham Forest and West Ham.

Pressure is starting to mount on Vitor Pereira as their poor league form continues. He was brought in as their replacement for Gary O'Neil last winter and he managed to keep them up in the last campaign. However, he faces an uphill battle if he is to achieve the same this time around.

Fulham vs Wolves referee decision made
The Premier League have confirmed that John Brooks will referee Wolves' trip to Fulham on Saturday. Simon Bennett and Lee Betts are the assistant referees, with Dean Whitestone as the fourth official. Meanwhile, Andy Madley and Steve Meredith will be on VAR duties.

Brooks, 35, has been a referee in the top flight since 2021 after working his way up. He is from Leicestershire and is also a FIFA listed official. He was the man in the middle for the Carabao Cup final in March between Liverpool and Newcastle United.

He caused controversy with Wolves last term in their 2-1 loss against West Ham. O'Neil was the manager at the time and was left furious with both of Brooks' decisions that led to the Hammers' goals. After the game, he said: "Some of the decisions went against us as well in a big game. In a big game, in big moments, some decisions I thought were fairly straightforward end up going against us.

"It's crazy. Santi Bueno is going to head the ball away, so it's irrelevant (that the VAR said it's a new phase of play) as we'd have cleared the ball. It's a blatant foul on Santi Bueno and there's no way it's a difference phase. The ball is still in the same area. They will find reasons, and of course they will, and I get there will be grey areas and the wording of the rule can be interpreted in many different ways. But that's a blatant foul on Bueno in the seconds before the goal. That's a blatant foul."

How did the Premier League respond to Gary O'Neil's comments?
The Premier League jumped to the defence of Brooks after O'Neil's comments. On West Ham's first goal, they explained 'The referee's call of no penalty for the challenge by Emerson on Guedes was checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming that the contact was outside the box', whilst on the Hammers' second, they said 'The referee's call of no penalty for the challenge by Mavropanos on Bellegarde was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed the referee's call was not clear and obviously wrong.'

O'Neil lost his job in the end after a poor run of form and was replaced by Pereira. Wolves stayed up with comfort last term but are struggling right now. They are staring down the barrel of relegation to the Championship if they can't turn their fortunes around quick.

Pereira was handed a three-year deal only last month running until 2028. However, he will be feeling the heat the moment and the hierarchy will have a decision to make regarding his situation if they can't claw themselves away from danger. Their upcoming opponents Fulham are positioned in 17th and haven't made the start they would have wanted to this season under Marco Silva.

How "must win" is Wolves at home?
Jack Stroudley looks at the importance our match against Wolverhampton Wanderers holds on our season.

It's certainly not been the start to the season that everyone expected or wanted. After nine games Fulham sit just above the relegation zone with four defeats on the spin, a banana-skin against Wycombe was barely avoided and an ever-growing list of absentees due to injury. Tensions are beginning to grow, with Saturday presenting a golden opportunity to alleviate those worries as we host a struggling Wolves side. I've seen lots of talk online about just how important this game is, but just how "must win" is it?

Simply must win?
On the side of "must win" there is no denying the importance that Saturday could hold. We're in a horrid run of form and face a Wolves side who are yet to win this season and after their late defeat at home to Burnley last Sunday, they are a club in turmoil. These are the type of games on paper that before the season you'd have earmarked as three points needed and rightfully so. Yes we haven't had the start we maybe wanted but a home game against those around us (even if you didn't expect that to be 17th v 20th in August) is a game you should be winning.

I also worry about the toxicity within the fanbase if things don't go our way come Saturday, and rightfully so. It's been a terrible start and yes we signed players late but the gaps in our squad are showing. It's the toughest period that Marco Silva has ever had at the club and he desperately needs three points to avoid any potential finger-pointing his way. We ended last season with a record points total and albeit collapsed during that final stage of the campaign optimism was high with everyone associated with the club. A dubious transfer window lowered that optimism but a defeat against a side yet to win this season at home to potentially put us into a relegation zone for the first time under Silva would really turn things sour.

Perspective or panic?
In order to provide some balance there is some perspective that could be had. Firstly, when the fixtures were released the start of the season run was looked at by the masses with concern. Manchester United, Brighton, Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Arsenal and Bournemouth all in the opening nine is a pretty tough run, with Leeds and Brentford earmarked as games we had to win, and win we did.

Maybe based on the quality of opposition and injuries we've got this is about right in terms of a points total? We've been relatively unlucky not to pick up more (Chelsea and Newcastle away etc) but maybe we're about where we "should" be? Personally I don't agree with that notion if we wish to progress as club with those inside it speaking about European aspirations on numerous occasions but I think it's only fair to provide some balance.

Just how important is it?
Massive. That's the answer to the question above. Saturday is massive. Fulham simply have to win otherwise things could go very south very quickly. We're seeing this season the newly promoted sides come up and put up a fight so you'd imagine at least one of the "17" will drop and games like Saturday are what we need to win to ensure we don't have any uncomfortable conversations as the season progresses.

It's not where we expected to be come November but there's still plenty of the season to go and this November period is one Fulham would have earmarked to pick-up a good amount of points, starting with Wolves. Hopefully Silva can right some of his personal wrongs as well. Bring in Kevin, bring in Cuenca and do whatever it takes to get the win. It can be scrappy, it can be flamboyant. Just make sure we get three points.

Games for the weekend 01/11...
We welcome Wolves to the Cottage for a 3 o'clock kick off
On the back of 4 defeats in the league, and scraping a win against Wycombe thanks to Lecomte saving 3 penalties, we face Wolves who are currently bottom of the league, is this the first 6 pointer of the season?
Last November we faced Wolves who were on a terrible run and they comprehensively beat us 1-4, hopefully this weekend will be different.

Our record, for the previous 8 games against Wolves, is so so with 2 wins, 4 losses and 2 draws.

It'll soon be easier to list who's not injured, currently Raul, ESR, Muniz, Chukwueze, Andersen, Wilson & Robinson all unavailable?

My team would be, if all of the above are not available then I don't think we've registered enough players to make a full bench, there would need to be several "youngsters" in the squad...

[size=4Two out-of-favour Wolves players should already be in Vitor Pereira's starting XI for Fulham[/size]
Two Wolves players have done more than enough to warrant back-to-back starts when the Old Gold travel to play Fulham.

The Wanderers exited the Carabao Cup in dramatic fashion, with Chelsea leaving Molineux as 4-3 winners.

Too often this season, Pereira has frequently changed his squad, and against the Blues, he made 11 changes.

It was a decision he would regret, as the Wolves head coach admitted fault for going 3-0 down in the first half.

Pereira's decision-making this season has been terrible, but he has a chance to make amends for himself on Saturday.

Despite the 4-3 loss to Chelsea, there were two standout men, and Vitor Pereira has to now reward impressive displays with a start against the Cottagers.

David Moller Wolfe and Tolu Arokodare must start against Fulham
David Moller Wolfe and Tolu Arokodare have not been given much of a chance since signing for Wolves during the summer and have mostly been out of favour so far.

For the Nigerian, he did not have a pre-season, so it makes sense that he needs time to get up to speed.

However, if there is one thing we learnt against Chelsea, Arokodare needs to start getting more minutes, as he looks ready to have more of an impact.

He is starting to look much fitter, and after scoring a goal in Wednesday's cup match, he simply has to start against Fulham.

Momentum is an important thing in football, and Pereira must ride that wave by giving the striker more minutes while he is full of confidence.

On the other side, it is a similar situation with David Moller Wolfe.

The Norwegian has had a tough time settling into life in England, but the defender has said he is nearly fully settled.

He scored two goals from left-back, and Moller Wolfe was one of Wolves' best players on the day.

Wolfe has not been in Pereira's plans so far, with just two Premier League starts coming in the opening couple of fixtures; however, he must now be rewarded with a place in the starting XI against Fulham.

Tolu Arokodare starting does not mean Jorgen Strand Larsen should be dropped
The quality of Jorgen Strand Larsen is evident, and while he has not been up to speed this season, it will not be long until he returns to his goal-scoring ways.

Like his Nigerian strike partner, his penalty against Burnley would have been a relief, as it finally got him his first goal of the Premier League season.

Vitor Pereira needs Larsen at his best form, and dropping him after scoring would not be smart either.

The Wolves head coach has hinted the duo could play up top together, and now could be the time to test it out.

The Old Gold need to beat Fulham, and going full throttle up front may be one of the better ways to get three points over the line.

Exclusive: Fulham Make Marco Silva Contract Plans After Summer Interest
Fulham are pushing ahead with plans to tie boss Marco Silva down to a new contract despite a slump in form, GIVEMESPORT understands.

Tuesday's penalty shootout win over League One side Wycombe Wanderers in the Carabao Cup was their first victory of any kind this month, while four Premier League defeats in a row have sent Silva's side spiralling to 17th in the table and just three points above the drop zone.

Silva Retains Support as Cottagers Seek Fresh Terms
But GMS has learned that senior figures inside Craven Cottage still have unwavering faith in Fulham head coach Silva and want him to sign an extension to his current contract which expires at the end of this season.

Sought-after Silva was linked with Tottenham Hotspur during the summer, following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou. The job eventually went to Thomas Frank of Brentford.

Silva, 48, remains in high regard in footballing circles even though Fulham's recent results have hit the buffers. They are at home to bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday and anything but a win will crank up the pressure on the Portuguese coach.

Talks are at an early stage, but there is strong feeling inside the club that Silva is still the man to lead the Cottagers into the next campaign and beyond.

He brought them up from the Championship in 2022 and has steadied the ship after a number of years yo-yoing between the top two divisions.

Last season, Fulham reached the FA Cup quarter-finals and the year before that the Carabao Cup semi-finals as an added bonus.

Silva is unlikely to commit to a new contract any time soon as he likes to keep his options open, so it will be some time before any official announcement can be made.

The feisty coach was frustrated with Fulham's inactivity in the transfer market during the summer. They signed only second choice goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte until breaking their club-record fee with a £34.6million move for Brazilian winger Kevin on deadline day.

Silva faces fellow countryman Vitor Pereira at home this weekend also nursing a growing injury list. Veteran striker Raul Jimenez, 34, is a doubt to face his old club after picking up a side injury against Wycombe and is a doubt. There are also fears that midfielder Emile Smith Rowe and winger Harry Wilson may be unfit.

After four years in the Fulham dugout, this is already the longest time Silva has spent in any one of his seven managerial jobs.

Wolves chief Pereira has also been given a vote of confidence by his board of directors in spite of the team's struggles on the pitch this season.

Fulham not the "final destination" for player insists teammate – Knows why he struggled elsewhere
Fulham is not the "final destination" for Calvin Bassey. That's at least according to teammate Kenny Tete.

Voetbal Primeur have an interview with him again today. He's been speaking to the outlet throughout this week.

This time the focus is on his Fulham teammate. Bassey joined Fulham in a €22.5m deal from Ajax in 2023.

He'd endured a miserable year with the Dutch side after joining them for €23m from Rangers in 2022. He had been a key player at Ibrox, impressing under Steven Gerrard's management.

But he couldn't find his feet in the Netherlands, with a series of high-profile mistakes and shaky performances leading to regular criticism from fans and pundits alike.

They were happy to move him on, and Fulham snapped him up. That's proven to be a smart move for them as he's established himself as a key player in their defence since. Tete is certainly a fan and doesn't believe Craven Cottage will be the defender's final destination.

"He's a tank, a fighter," he said.

"When he came here, I thought things weren't looking good at Ajax, but I don't think Ajax was very good at the time.

"Maybe it just wasn't the right fit. He's a perfect fit here. Everyone loves him. Fulham isn't his final destination."

Perhaps part of the reason Bassey has managed to settle at Fulham is due to their fanbase. Tete certainly thinks so, admitting they're a nicer crowd than the one at Ajax anyway.

"It's very different here," he added in separate comments.

"Our fans are different; they're quite classy. At Ajax and Lyon, there was a lot of pressure, and people would wait for the bus if you lost a few times. That doesn't happen here."

Fulham boss full of praise for teenage star ahead of Wolves clash
Fulham manager Marco Silva said Josh King has qualities that are 'not easy to find' after the 18-year-old scored his first senior goal as Fulham edged past Wycombe on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The League One side looked on track for a memorable upset when former Fulham player Cauley Woodrow lashed them in front inside four minutes at Adams Park.

King's goal, flicked in cleverly from a near-post corner to equalise just after half-time, put the visitors into the ascendency with Silva's team creating more than enough chances to finish the tie in 90 minutes ahead of their upcoming clash with Wolves.

Instead penalties were needed to determine who progressed to the quarter-final, Fulham spurning two chances to win it before Issa Diop struck the winning kick to edge it 5-4.

Silva, whose side were on a four-match losing run in the Premier League, praised King for his 'streetwise' finish from Kevin's corner to rescue his side - as they prepare to take on Wolves on  Saturday.

"He has a role there," he said. "His role was to go in front of the player. He was streetwise and that's what I want from all of the players.

"We have a role to try and block players in that situation. He was very smart the way he finished that moment.

"I'm very pleased to have him with us. We, and himself, prepared him very well last season. Since he was 16 I spoke with him, that the season after he is going to be a senior player for this club.

"He made his debut at 17. He's a lovely boy, he's very humble. He has many things to improve, his finishing, but he has many good things that it is not easy to find in football at his age.

"He's playing every game because we trust him and he deserves the trust."

Fulham looked short of confidence after going a goal down and struggled to break Wycombe down.

"These type of moments can happen in this competition," he said. "To be honest, I think we did enough. We knew we were stronger than them.

"In these type of moments we have to keep positivity around ourselves, because these type of things happen. First shot on target, goal for Wycombe. That's football.

"The results haven't been at all good enough for us. Some difficult circumstances, some difficult opposition. But I think the team is being very competitive in all the games. I'm sure that with all the squad available we are going to be much stronger."

REVEALED: Newcastle set for mad week as date emerges for Fulham quarter-final
Newcastle United advanced into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup last night, seeing off Spurs 2-0 thanks to goals from Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade at St James' Park.

The draw followed live on Sky Sports, and it was just what we hoped for, handing us another home tie against a Fulham side that we beat 2-1 last week.

The game is due to be played on the week beginning 15th December. No 'official date' has been set, but the tie will almost certainly take place on Wednesday, 17th December.

This date looks nailed on as Newcastle play at Sunderland on Sunday, 14th December (live on Sky Sports at 2pm) and in the 12.30pm kick-off (live on TNT Sports) at home to Chelsea on Saturday, 20th December.

With this in mind, the Fulham game will not take place on Tuesday 16th – just 48 hours after the Wear-Tyne derby – and couldn't be Thursday 18th, which would be less than 48 hours before our early kick-off with Chelsea on Saturday, 20th.

So, Wednesday the 17th December will be the date, with a kick-off time of 7.45pm or 8pm set to be decided in due course, depending on TV scheduling.

This creates a manic yet exciting week for Newcastle United, who will play a local derby, cup quarter-final and vital clash with top four rivals Chelsea in the space of seven days in the build up to Christmas!

Preview:Fulham vs Wolverhampton Wanderers - prediction, team news, lineups
Two Premier League teams struggling at the wrong end of the table do battle at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon as Fulham play host to basement club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Cottagers beat Wolves 2-1 at Molineux in their last league meeting in February and only once in their history have they ever won back-to-back matches against the Old Gold, doing so in the second tier back in October 1908.

Match preview
Fulham have struggled to build on their 11th-placed finish in the Premier League last season and find themselves down in 17th spot after winning only two of their opening nine matches this term, hovering just three points above the relegation zone.

No current Premier League team are enduring a longer losing run than the Cottagers, who have suffered defeat in each of their last four matches - they have not had a longer losing streak within the same season since losing nine games in a row between February and April in the 2018-19 campaign.

After coming up short in defeats to Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Arsenal, Marco Silva's men looked on course to claim a point in last weekend's clash with Newcastle United at St James' Park, until they conceded their third 90th-minute goal of the season to lose 2-1. Fulham have conceded 23 winners in the 90th minute of games in PL history, with only Tottenham (27) and Aston Villa (26) ever conceding more.

Fulham managed to stop the rot in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, but only just as they had goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte to thank for saving three penalties in a 5-4 shootout victory over League One outfit Wycombe Wanderers following a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes of their fourth-round tie.

Silva and co will welcome a return to Craven Cottage this weekend, as they have collected seven of their eight PL points on home soil this season. However, they have failed to win any of their last five top-flight home matches against teams starting the day in the relegation zone (D3 L2), with one of those seeing them put to the sword 4-1 by Wolves in November last season.

Wolves are the only team yet to win in the Premier League this season after collecting just two points from their first nine matches (D2 L7). The Old Gold failed to win their opening 10 games last season (D3 L7) and no side in top-flight history has ever started successive seasons with 10 winless games.

Molineux became a hostile environment last weekend as Wolves suffered a disappointing 3-2 home defeat to newly-promoted Burnley, who scored a dramatic 95th-minute winner to leave the Old Gold rooted to the foot of the table and six points adrift of safety.

Vitor Pereira's men have since been eliminated from the EFL Cup after they were beaten 4-3 by 10-man Chelsea in a thrilling West Midlands encounter on Wednesday. Three first-half strikes helped the Blues reach the quarter-finals, despite a hectic second half in which David Moller Wolfe (2) and Tolu Arokodare scored for Wolves, with Jamie Gittens settling the tie for Chelsea with a long-range worldie.

Wolves can now focus on attempting to turn their Premier League fortunes around, with Pereira seeking to avoid becoming the first manager since Sheffield United's Chris Wilder between February and May 2024 to go 14 games without a win in the division - Pereira's 13-game winless streak (D3 L10) in the longest for a Wolves boss since Gary O'Neil (also 13) between May and November 2024.

The Old Gold can at least take some encouragement from their record against Saturday's opponents Fulham, having won eight of their 18 Premier League meetings (D6 L4), only beating Southampton and Tottenham (nine each) more often in the division.

Team News
Fulham's Joachim Andersen (hamstring), Antonee Robinson (knee), Rodrigo Muniz (muscle) and Samuel Chukwueze (calf) all remain sidelined with injuries, while a late call will be made on the fitness of Emile Smith Rowe (thigh), Raul Jimenez (groin) and Harry Wilson (knock) who are all doubtful.

Should former Wolves striker Jimenez miss out, club-record signing Kevin could be tasked with leading the line, with Adama Traore - another ex-Wolves man - and Alex Iwobi set to continue on the flanks.

Despite his midweek heroics between the sticks, Lecomte is set to be replaced in goal by Bernd Leno, while full-backs Kenny Tete and Ryan Sessegnon are expected to be recalled to join centre-backs Calvin Bassey and Issa Diop in a four-man defence.

As for Wolves, teenage forward Leon Chiwome remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury, while Matt Doherty (knee) and Rodrigo Gomes (groin) have emerge as doubts after they were both forced off against Chelsea in midweek.

Ladislav Krejci is expected to earn a recall in defence alongside Santiago Bueno, and Jackson Tchatchoua is set to start at right-back at the expense of Doherty, while Jhon Arias, Fer Lopez and Hwang Hee-chan will all be in contention to start in attack if Rodrigo Gomes misses out.

Jorgen Strand Larsen scored his first Premier League goal of the season in last weekend's defeat to Burnley and he is expected to lead the line once again, with Tolu Arokodare providing cover as a substitute.

Fulham possible starting lineup:

Leno; Tete, Diop, Bassey, Sessegnon; Berge, Lukic; Traore, King, Iwobi; Kevin

Wolverhampton Wanderers possible starting lineup:

Johnstone; Tchatchoua, S. Bueno, Krejci, H. Bueno; Munetsi, Andre, J. Gomes; Arias, Strand Larsen, Hwang

We say: Fulham 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
There is very little to separate these two out-of-form teams, so a closely-contested battle could be on the cards this weekend. The absence of a few key players for Fulham might give Wolves a slight edge, but we still expect the hosts to come away with at least a share of the spoils from what could prove to be a frustrating afternoon for both sides.

Fulham lineup vs. Wolves: Predicted XI for Premier League clash
Fulham could be without seven players for Saturday's Premier League clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Craven Cottage.

Joachim Andersen (hamstring), Antonee Robinson (knee), Rodrigo Muniz (muscle) and Samuel Chukwueze (calf) all remain sidelined with injuries, while a late call will be made on the fitness of Emile Smith Rowe (thigh), Raul Jimenez (groin) and Harry Wilson (knock) who are all doubtful.

After rotating his side for Wednesday's EFL Cup fourth-round win on penalties against Wycombe, Marco Silva is expected to revert to a similar team to the one that lost 2-1 at Newcastle in the Premier League last weekend.

Despite saving three penalties in the shootout against Wycombe, goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte is set to be replaced by Bernd Leno, while centre-backs Calvin Bassey and Issa Diop could be joined in the four-man defence by full-backs Kenny Tete and Ryan Sessegnon.

Sasa Lukic, who scored against Newcastle last weekend, is expected to renew his partnership in centre-midfield with Sander Berge, while highly-rated teenager Josh King, who scored against Wycombe, will hope to retain his spot in the number 10 role.

Alex Iwobi is likely to start on the left flank and ex-Wolves man Adama Traore will hope to continue on the opposite wing, while club-record signing Kevin could be tasked with leading the line if Jimenez - another former Wolves player - is not fit to return.

Fulham possible starting lineup: Leno; Tete, Diop, Bassey, Sessegnon; Berge, Lukic; Traore, King, Iwobi; Kevin

Fulham, West Ham United rival AC Milan in Gabriel Jesus race
AC Milan are all set to face competition from Fulham and West Ham United in their pursuit of Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus.

Gabriel Jesus is expected to part ways with Arsenal at the turn of the calendar. The Brazilian will soon be back on the pitch, but since he is no longer a part of Mikel Arteta's plans, his future has become a big talking point.

According to a report from Milanlive.it, AC Milan are keen on acquiring his services as they look to reinforce their attack mid-season. But they are set to face competition from Fulham and West Ham United, who are also keeping tabs on the Brazilian international.

After an impressive spell in England with Manchester City, Gabriel Jesus joined the Gunners in the summer of 2022. While he has been an integral part of Arteta's plans over the years, his output in the final third has often been questioned.

The 28-year-old has been sidelined with a ligament injury since the start of the year. While Arsenal were already in the market for a world-class forward, his unavailability made it a top priority for them. The Gunners ended up forking out a significant fee to sign Viktor Gyokeres.

Gabriel Jesus to leave Arsenal in January?
While Gabriel Jesus is set to return in the near future, he is no longer an important part of Arsenal's squad. He still has around 18 months left on his deal, but a departure in the winter window looks very likely.

The 28-year-old still has the desire to make it to Brazil's squad for the World Cup, and he is aware that he will have to play week in and week out to make it happen. Since that is unlikely to happen at the North London club, the former City striker is ready to make the switch in January.

AC Milan, Fulham and West Ham have emerged as potential destinations for the Brazilian striker. But since he has been out injured for a long time, signing him could be a massive risk. As a result, Arsenal are open to a loan deal with a buy option, which becomes an obligation depending on certain conditions.

The Gunners want just a touch below €30 million for Gabriel Jesus, who certainly has a lot of football left in him. Despite his recent struggles, there is certainly no shortage of interest in him. Italian giants Milan are struggling to score goals, and they want a prominent figure up top.

English clubs to rival AC Milan
They feel the Arsenal striker could help their cause. But they will face tough competition from Fulham and West Ham, who continue to monitor his situation. Marco Silva seeks more firepower in the final third and feels Gabriel Jesus' experience could come in handy.

West Ham are also keen on signing the Brazilian, as long as the terms are favourable for them. With Niclas Fullkrug and Callum Wilson struggling to score goals, reinforcing their attack is a top priority for newly appointed Nuno Espirito Santo.
