Two different scenarios, and I am not excusing England.
However Scotland were the underdogs so they know that they have to raise their game another gear just to stay in the match.
That means running through a brick wall and come out fighting on the other side as any other team in their position would do, including England.

With Ghana they were the underdogs so they had to raise their game another gear to stay in the game with England, and they succeeded, partly because all the pressure and expectancy was on England. In the similar scenario with the boot on the other foot England would show more passion.
Nevertheless Ghana got a result and so did England.
Whereas Scotland finished empty handed and well beaten.
That is the difference and that is football at all levels, from the Kings Head 5th Eleven to Real Madrid.

If Scotland played say Luxembourg, then Scotland may be the favourites so inevitably Luxembourg would play with more passion than Scotland because they are-the underdogs.
Although in my book Luxembourg would still win.

I'm totally with you when i say, I love it when home nations do well too, but I can't put my head in the sand and pretend like there isn't a much larger contingency of Scottish fans who openly relish in England doing badly.

The population of Croatia is significantly less than that of Scotland and they have been consistently successful. I'm sure there are other examples like Cape Verde and Curacao whose populations are one tenth of the size of Scotland.

The Scottish lad in my 5 a side group just said he'll be wearing his Panama shirt for the next few days.....neighbours sporting Panama flags already 

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there's some England supporters like this, but its not common and actually, as demonstrated here, a lot, even with this opposing stance towards us, likes home nation sides to do well.

The hatred from Scots in these sort of things is incredible. I mean there's a scottish bloke where I live who has spent over £200 buying a shirt from each of the teams we're playing in the group stage.
A few of my very best mates are Scottish and some of the rubbish i get off them during tournaments is plain weird.
I grew up always wanting home nations to succeed, but after knowing how they feel about England, I simply don't anymore.

On the pitches side of things, I agree. If you visit Spain, Netherlands or places in France, there's little sports facilities everywhere, not here and school sport is becoming almost redundant.
I played on those pitches at Chiswick a few times too, they're still there.

If we're just going by population then we should be seeing China and India dominate all sports ever for the rest of eternity. I don't think population should have a huge bearing on how they perform.

Jim, the best surface was the railway pitch, way over by the fence where the tubes run by. Really wide and lush green.  The stadium pitch was a good size but drainage made it a bit too hard. Good memories of a few years of my playing days.

I recall getting a phone call one Friday.  I was in the first team and our game had been called off, The call was "captain of the vets team (over 35) here. Are you available to turn out for us tomorrow, it is not compulsory to actually be over 35."  I said "ok"  When I got there we talked position.  I said "best position, full back, right or left"  Response was "we are over 35, we all play full back"  "can you play centre forward"  I said "I am 5'6" but ok".  My one and only time and loved it. I was about 22 or 23. Kept making runs to support our left winger, calling for the ball, who provided great service. He was outstanding. After the game, in the bar, I talked about him and was told he was stone deaf. So, I was wasting my time and breath calling for the ball....he had great vision and was over 40 years old. Wonderful experience, never forgotten.  The joy of football.

Were they the Old Civil Service Sports Ground Pitches.

They were but I'm pretty sure that it was also the home of Fulham Rugby League for a while too?
That stand always needed a lick of paint!
