Given we lose to City twice every year, surely we have a legal case for lost earnings through European football? If we added on a hypothetical six points to our tally for the last however many seasons, how many times would we have got Europe?

We've been in the PL with City for 18 seasons, this is the 19th.

In the previous 18 seasons, we've won both league games v City in a season just once (2005/06); we've drawn one game and won one game twice; we've drawn both games twice; we've drawn one and lost one three times; and we've lost both games ten times, including in each of our last eight PL seasons.

The charges relate to 2009-2018 and for some of those seasons we were out of the PL and in one of the seasons we were relegated (2013/14) so extra points wouldn't have got us into Europe for those seasons.

This wouldn't work, I'm afraid. An extra 6 points for us would have taken us to 39 in 2013/14. Teams immediately above us were WBA, Hull, Villa and Sunderland. WBA lost twice to Man City so they would get an extra 6 points (taking them to 42). Hull lost twice to Man City so their extra 6 points would take them to 43. Villa won once and lost once to Man City so their extra 3 points would take them to 41.  And Sunderland won once and drew once to Man City so their extra 2 points would take them to 40. We still go down with 39!

Is that right though? Because we're talking hypothetically here. We're not saying that if City hadn't cheated then we'd have 100% stayed up, we're saying that there would have been a chance that we would have stayed up on the basis that City had an unfair advantage in their games against us. We could argue that there was a hypothetical scenario where City lost against us but still beat the other teams you mentioned.

I don't know I'm no legal expert, but to me it seems like a plausible case.

It's actually very hard to find a punishment that fits the crime. During that period they won the league, FA cup, league cup etc. That got them into Europe. Teams were relegated due to their cheating. Teams were robbed of titles and cups due to their cheating. Teams were robbed of Europe due to their cheating. Based upon other team's punishments they should have the book thrown at them. A minimum of second division football and millions to be divided amongst teams (although there is an argument that most teams were indirectly affected).
The reality is that they will get away with it. A modest penalty deduction and a modest point deduction.

What really gets me is yeah they've now found them guilty but what about all the fruits of their misdemeanours that they've enjoyed whilst the suspect powers have dragged their heels in coming to a decision that was almost certainly apparent at the at the outset.

It was the independent commission that found them guilty, not the football authorities and it will be the commission that sets the penalty.

I believe the appeal process (a fresh 3 person panel) has no time limit on it but the decision is final with no further appeals allowed.

There will be multiple law suits whichever way this goes. Teams failing to make Europe, teams being relegated, players losing bonuses, clubs losing sponsorship. This will not settle down even after the City appeals. The fact that City's announcement slated the independence of the arbitrators says it all. They will fight and hopefully they fail. They should be seriously demoted and be fined enough to allow for each team to be moved up one spot in the division's commercial payments.

Surely if the appeal on the verdict goes against them they should still have the opportunity to appeal against any subsequent sentence. Fair play!
