Every season has a narrative.  Will 2010/11 be one of missed opportunity?

In the cups, all anyone wants is a home draw.  Then all they want is to avoid big teams in those home games.  We actually got a dodgy fixture against Spurs, whom we rarely seem to beat, but having smashed them out of contention (allowing them to concentrate on other things), that fifth round home tie against Bolton was pretty generous.

Of course, we lost.  Now we see Bolton squeezing by an ordinary Birmingham, setting up a game at Wembley against Stoke City, who beat West Ham in another quarter final.  What might have been, eh?

Nothing too dramatic in the world at the moment, hence the relative quiet in these parts.  Hope you all enjoyed your weekends.

(PS isn't it strange the things you find out about yourself?  On Sunday I was actually cheering on West Ham, something I never thought I'd do.  My brain has obviously done its sorting and placed Stoke lower down the "Rich's preference" league.)

(PPS Preston didn't play this weekend, which left a tiny gap in my weekend; I'm always desperate to know if Eddie's scored.  So far, no, but he was back in the first XI last week.  He may get another go on Tuesday, I think.)

(PPPS How about Chris Smalling?  Surely an England call-up can't be far off now.  Delighted for him.)

And for us a few extra quid as i'm sure this would have been built into the deal.

LILY ALLEN is feeling charitable. She's auctioning a VIP trip for Comic Relief. The winner of the Twit Relief eBay auction can choose between a spree in her shop Lucy In Disguise or a day at the cricket or footie with Fulham fan Lily. Seeing BOBBY ZAMORA in the flesh is surely worth a bid.

Fulham Soccer Club Loss Widens to $27 Million on Costs of Europa Success

By Tariq Panja - Mar 14, 2011 2:35 PM GMT

Fulham's loss widened last fiscal year on higher costs as the Premier League soccer club reached the final of the Europa League.

The loss at the club owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed surged to 16.9 million pounds ($27.2 million) from 6.9 million pounds on the expense of hosting extra games and player-trading costs, according to accounts published by Companies House.

Sales climbed 15 percent to a record 77.1 million pounds in the year to June 30, boosted by the European run, which contributed 12.5 million pounds.

The London team beat clubs including Juventus, Hamburg and defending champion Shakhtar Donetsk before losing to Atletico Madrid in its first European final. Egyptian businessman Al- Fayed sold London department store Harrods to the Qatar royal family for 1.5 billion pounds last year.

"As is evident, I remain committed to making investment funds available to achieve our goals both on and off the pitch," Fayed said in a statement that accompanied the accounts. "The continued success of Fulham and its eventual financial self-sustainability is my priority."

Al-Fayed, 78, spent millions of pounds on the team to take it from the third tier to the Premier League within four years of buying Fulham in 1997. It's now playing its 10th consecutive season in the top flight.

The owner has provided "written indications" of continued funding, the accounts said. He's already loaned more than 160 million pounds to the team on an unsecured, interest-free basis, and is one of several Premier League club owners who support clubs with their own funds.

The Cottagers' form last season, which also included a 12th-place league finish and a run to the quarterfinals of the F.A. Cup, led to 18-time English champion Liverpool recruiting its manager Roy Hodgson. His tenure at Anfield lasted just six months and he was fired in January after presiding over the team's worst start to a season in half a century.

Fulham, now managed by Mark Hughes, is 11th in the Premier League after 29 games.

Fulham accounts show losses of almost £17m but owner Mohamed Al-Fayed committed to backing club

Egyptian indicates he will continue to finance team

Fulham's losses for the last financial year have gone up by £10 million after it was announced the west London club lost £16.9m last year.

Despite reaching the Europa League final last season the club's losses have been published by Companies House, with the expense of hosting extra games and player-trading costs being the chief reasons for the increase in losses.

Boosted by their European run, the club's sales increased to a record £77.1m in the year to June 30, a climb of 15 per cent. The Europa League run itself contributed £12.5m.

Despite the losses announced Fulham's owner, Mohamed Al-Fayed, has insisted that he remains committed to the club in the long term.

Al-Fayed said in a statement accompanying the accounts: "As is evident, I remain committed to making investment funds available to achieve our goals both on and off the pitch.

"The continued success of Fulham and its eventual financial self-sustainability is my priority."

Al-Fayed has been in charge of Fulham since 1997 and his club have now been in the Premier League for 10 consecutive seasons. He has already loaned more than £160m to the club in an unsecured, interest-free basis.

The accounts also suggested that Al-Fayed had provided "written indications" of continued funding for the team.
