Return To Action

Friday 22nd April 2011

Fulham return to competitive action on Saturday against Wolves after a two week break and Fulham defender Aaron Hughes is looking forward to a flurry of fixtures over the Easter period to set Fulham up for a strong finish to the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League season.

"We had a break last weekend and it will be good to get back into it this weekend," said Hughes. "It's a big week with three big games for us. We're looking forward to it and hopefully putting some more points on the board between now and the end of the season."

Over the final six games of the season Fulham's supporters will be keeping a close eye on the Fair Play table hoping the Club can enjoy another adventure in Europe next season.

When discussing the possibility of playing in the Europa League again, Hughes highlighted the key elements of Fulham's fine disciplinary record this season.

"We've got a good group of experienced players that don't give away silly fouls all the time," the Northern Ireland international captain explained. "We're a well disciplined group that know it's important that suspensions through the season can hurt a team.

"Of course you pick up bookings along the way but we're not known for being a dirty side or anything like that. It comes down to experience, discipline and the group of guys we have at Fulham."

One player whose experience has certainly played a crucial part in Fulham's success over recent years is goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer and Hughes believes the Aussie stopper has many more years of peak performance ahead of him at Fulham.

"In terms of the condition he's [Schwarzer] in and what he does for the Team, he can go on as long as he feels he can go on. Physically he's in as good a shape as I've seen any keeper.

"The quality is there and I don't think you can put a time on it [his career] because he's in such superb condition and he looks after himself well. He trains well and remains one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League."

Murphy could get hot reception at Wolves - Hughes

By Jacob Murtagh

Apr 21 2011

MARK Hughes admits Danny Murphy could be in for a hot reception at Molineux on Saturday.

The Fulham captain caused a storm earlier this season when he blamed the Blackburn, Stoke and Wolves managers for the 'brainless' physical approaches of their sides.

The Whites had lost Bobby Zamora for most of the season after a tackle by Wolves skipper Karl Henry, while Mousa Dembele was sidelined for a couple of months after a reckless challenge by Stoke's Andy Wilkinson.

Mick McCarthy and Tony Pulis were incensed with Murphy's comments, and Hughes reckons his skipper could be in for a tough ride in the Midlands.

He said: "We had just suffered a number of injuries and they were fresh in our mind. That's why Danny mentioned certain clubs, rightly or wrongly.

"He might get a bit of a reception. Different teams play in different ways and that was the point he was trying to make.

"The mistake he made was to single out the respective clubs."

Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell out to show Wolves what they're missing

By Jacob Murtagh

Apr 21 2011

STEVE Sidwell will be out to show Wolves what they're missing on Saturday.

The former Aston Villa midfielder was set to sign for the Molineux club in January after agreeing terms, only for Fulham to hijack the deal at the last minute.

And Sidwell has already done enough to convince boss Mark Hughes to hand him a contract extension to keep him at Craven Cottage until 2014.

"Steve has shown enough in his time here that he's going to be a big part of what we're going to do," said Hughes.

"We could've waited until the summer but wanted him to understand that he was a part of things.

"We're delighted to have him on board."

The name's Al Fayed, Mohamed Al Fayed: Former Harrods boss poised to make an offer on James Bond studios

By Daily Mail Reporter

Last updated at 1:08 AM on 22nd April 2011

Colourful Fulham football club chairman Mohamed Al Fayed is seeking to become a movie mogul.

The former owner of Harrods department store is set to put in a bid for Pinewood Shepperton PLC - the film studio behind such blockbusters as the James Bond and Harry Potter franchises.

Mr Al Fayed today confirmed he is considering an 'all-cash' bid for the historic UK studios after Pinewood had earlier announced it had received an £87.8million takeover offer from its largest shareholder, Peel Holdings Ltd.

Making moves to make movies: Mohamed Al-Fayed could become the owner of the largest film studio in Europe

Mr Al Fayed  told the London Stock Exchange that he was considering a deal - but added that there was no certainty a firm offer would be forthcoming.

The company is currently planning an ambitious £20million upgrade to its famous studios in Buckinghamshire - which opened in 1934 - to add facilities on a par with its Hollywood competitors.

The studios, which include stages at two other locations, last year hosted the fourth instalment of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, the final Harry Potter film and a new adaption of the Charlotte Bronte classic Jane Eyre. It has also been the long-standing base for most James Bond films.

Jewel in the crown: Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire are the largest studios in Europe

Productions underway include the next Clash Of The Titans film and several local TV shows. The company has also unveiled plans to invest in small-budget British films, to capitalise on the success of the The King's Speech, which became an international smash despite a relatively small £9million budget from producers.

Lights, camera, action: Actors Daniel Craig (left) and Daniel Radcliffe are familiar with Pinewood's studios. Both the James Bond and Harry Potter franchises are filmed there

Mr Al Fayed, who sold Harrods last year for £1.5billion to the investment arm of Qatar's sovereign wealth fund, has shown a prior interest in film-making. He previously owned a studio in Egypt and funded the Oscar-winning 1981 film Chariots Of Fire, which was executive produced by his son, Dodi Fayed, who died in a Paris car accident with Princess Diana.

Mr Al Fayed caused controversy last month after he placed a £100,000 statue of pop star Michael Jackson in the grounds of Fulham FC. He told fans who ridiculed the statue to 'go to hell'.

Hopes that Fulham Football Club owner Mohamed Al-Fayed will soon trump Peel Holdings' 190p a share offer for Pinewood Shepperton, which values the James Bond film studio group at £88m, helped the shares rocket 18p, or 9pc, to a 52-week high of 220p. It looks as though he will have to table an offer in excess of 230p, or £106m, to win the day. John Whittaker's Peel Holdings owns 29.8pc of Pinewood and can therefore block any counter offer.

Fulham defender willing to risk Europa League spot

By Paul Warburton

Apr 22 2011

FULHAM won't shirk tackles from now until the end of the season – even if it does cost them a shock return to the Europa League.

The Whites have a back door to the competition they graced last season via an excellent disciplinary record in Uefa's Fair Play table.

But defender Aaron Hughes insists he and team-mates have put the last-chance incentive out of their minds.

Fulham and Hughes made the Europa final where they lost to Athletico Madrid in May 2010. As a result of England's second-place in the Uefa good boys league published this week – they are the team in pole position for next season as well.

Chelsea lead the Fair Play but will almost certainly qualify for the Champions League instead – not that it has any effect on Hughes.

"It's not as if you can plan tackles," said Hughes. "It's a split second thing – you do it almost unthinking in that sense – so nobody would have the Europa League in mind at that moment.

"What I will say is we have a number of experienced players, who usually know when they can win tackles and when they can't.

"We know when to stand up and not dive in, that sort of thing – and so far it's stood us in good stead."

Football's a drug for Hughes

Fulham boss admits all top bosses feel the heat

Last Updated: April 21, 2011 5:41pm

Fulham manager Mark Hughes admits his passion for football is so great it would be difficult to quit the game for the sake of his health.

The effect of the pressure that comes with Premier League football was laid bare on Thursday night when Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier was admitted to hospital after falling ill.

The former Liverpool manager previously underwent open-heart surgery almost 10 years ago, while Joe Kinnear was forced to step down as Newcastle boss in 2009 after undergoing a heart bypass operation.

.At 47, Hughes is more than a decade younger than both men but explained it would be a wrench to give up the game if he were to suffer the same fate.

"You have to understand what this game does to you," he said.

"I was out of the game for the first time in my career since I was a professional football player when I was sacked at Manchester City.

"It's okay for a month but, after that, you just crave to get back in because that's what you do, that's what you know, and that's what you love to be part of."

Asked if it was a drug, he added: "Absolutely, and once you've had a taste of it, it's something that's with you and has to be satisfied.

Weaknesses exposed
"If you're not in great health then any weaknesses can be brought to the fore because of the stresses and the strains that surround the game and surround your position as a Premier League manager.

"That's unfortunately been borne out in recent times and obviously in Gerard's situation."

Hughes sent his best wishes to Houllier, who has faced a demanding first season at Villa Park as the team has only recently climbed away from the relegation zone.

"When you're in the job we're in, the pressures build up and, certainly, at this time of the year, the stresses and strains come to the fore and they can bring out any weakness that you possibly have in your health," Hughes added.

"Whether you deal with it outwardly or inwardly, it still bears down on you and you have to have strategies to deal with that."

Fulham to make summer move for Portuguese midfield star

By talkSPORT

Thursday, April 21

Fulham have placed Joao Ribeiro back on their shopping list as they bid to secure their Premier League status.

The Cottagers are now five points clear of the drop zone and beginning to plan for next season in the top-flight.

The Vitoria de Guimaraes midfielder was on Mark Hughes' radar in January, according to Portuguese newspaper O'Jogo, but the west London club were involved in a relegation battle at the time.

Now they are up to 12th in the table and are looking forward to next season, with scouts from Craven Cottage said to be monitoring the 23-year-old's progress.

The winger is contracted to his current club until 2013 and has a market value of around £2.5m.

Fresh Lloyd raid on cards for Cottagers

by Setanta Staff , 21 April 2011

Port Vale's caretaker boss Mark Grew has confirmed that Fulham will take youngster Ryan Lloyd on a trial spell in May.

Lloyd is set to come to the end of his first two years as a Vale youth team player and has impressed greatly at the League Two side.

The Cottagers, who have already agreed a deal to take Darlington youngster Dan Burn to Craven Cottage from next season, will take a look at Lloyd on a week's trial from May 1.

If he is successful, then boss Mark Hughes could look to try and secure a permanent switch to the Londoners.

Meanwhile, Grew told the Port Vale website: "It is nice to know that Premiership clubs are keeping a watch on our players. Fulham showed an expression of interest and Ryan will spend a week with them.

"We have had lots of interest from both Premiership and Championship clubs in several of our players and it is nice to know we are going in the right direction."

Agent - Osvaldo staying put

Espanyol striker said to be against summer switch

By Francisco Acedo.

Last Updated: April 21, 2011 1:09pm

Dani Osvaldo's agent has insisted the sought-after striker wishes to stay with Espanyol.

The 25-year-old has caught the eye this season and been linked with the likes of Atletico, Sevilla, Aston Villa and Fulham in recent weeks.

The Argentina-born striker bagged a brace in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid to take his tally to 10 goals in 16 La Liga starts this term.

He has scored three in three starts since returning from a 10-week injury lay-off in March and his agent, Dario Decoud, has confirmed there has been interest from the Premier League.

Decide

But he claims his client would favour staying with Espanyol for the foreseeable future.

."There is time to consider the situation, there is a month before they open the market," said Decoud.

"His idea is to stay here, but it is his future and he must decide what to do."

Osvaldo signed a five-year contract with Espanyol last summer after impressing during a loan spell from Bologna for the second half of last season.

DAMIEN Duff is a major injury doubt for Saturday's trip to Molineux.

The Irishman missed the defeat against Manchester United a fortnight ago, and is still struggling with an Achilles problem.

Boss Mark Hughes said: "He's got inflammation around his Achilles. We hope there will be better news for the games in the week."

Hughes has no fresh injury worries as the Whites look to continue their climb up the table.

Get Well Soon Gerard

Thursday 21st April 2011

Following the news that Gerard Houllier was admitted to hospital on Wednesday, Fulham Manager Mark Hughes took the time during his pre-match press conference to send his best wishes to the Aston Villa manager.

"Our thoughts are with Gerard and his family," said Hughes on Thursday afternoon. "It's a really worrying time for them and his club as he's their figurehead.

"We wish him well and we hope it's nothing too serious. When you're in the job we're in the pressure builds up at this time of the year and the stresses and strains come to fore. They can bring out a possible weakness you may have in your health so it's a difficult job."

Hughes spoke of the stresses and strains placed upon Premier League managers and the need to alleviate those pressures, especially during the latter stages of a season.

"There's a lot of focus on managers and what they're doing at their respective clubs and how their teams are doing," Hughes explained. "Inevitably that focus on success falls on the shoulders of managers.

"Irrespective of your personality or how you deal with it, it still bears down on you and you have to have a strategy for how to deal with it.

"The LMA do great work and all managers should now be signed up to their Wellness Programme. I certainly am and by having regular health checks it allows you to do your job."

Money, Money, Money

Filed under: General — timmyg @ 2:11 pm

We're #136! We're #136! We're #136!

Okay, these figures about the "200 best-paying teams in the world" is a bit of out date as they're based on last season. Hull and Portsmouth are not in the EPL, nor is Siena still in Serie A.

But it's nice to know we pay about the same on salaries that Fiorentina do, right? They're good, right?

The most interesting thing about this list to compare and contrast the leagues though, even if it is apples and oranges.

For instance, look at the NFL. The Washington Redskins is that league's highest paying team, yet they are ranked just #70 overall. They're right behind the NBA's Sacramento Kings — a team that is moving to the other end of California (Anaheim) this summer — and just a bit above Portsmouth.

Overall, the average ranking of an NFL team is #114. That makes sense considering the strict salary caps and unguaranteed contracts for the players. Yet, the league is the most popular here in the states with attendances nearly doubling the EPL, and a commanding multi-billion dollar TV contract and oodles of public money for stadiums.

But, it is also currently in a lockout because of qualms over revenue sharing between players and owners. Connected? I think so.

Anything else stick out to you? For me, the last thing is just how cheap the New York Islanders are. Man are they a mess.

Mousa's Goal Rush

Thursday 21st April 2011

Mousa Dembele is hoping to finish the season with a goal-scoring flourish as the Whites prepare for Saturday's Barclays Premier League encounter with Wolves.

The Belgium international's brace in the home fixture against Wolves helped the Whites secure all three points. But looking ahead to the game at Molineux, Dembele is expecting to find a home side in determined mood.

"It was a really good game against Wolves at home," Dembele told fulhamfc.com. "It's always nice to be important in a game and that's why I have a good feeling playing against Wolves. This time it's going to be different because they're at the bottom of the table and they're going to be extra motivated to win the game.

"My season has gone quite well but the goals are staying out, so I want to score more goals – but for a first season I think it's quite good. I have a minimum number of goals I need to score in the season and at the moment I haven't reached my target.

"I want to score more goals but it's also true that I want to be important for the team. I like to create goals for my team-mates, whether it's with a good pass or by making the game more open."

With Fulham striving for a place in the top ten, many supporters will be keeping one eye on the table as the action unfold on Saturday but as Dembele explained, he's not one for scanning the rankings.

"To be honest I don't think too much about the table," he said. "I prefer to concentrate on the game itself. I want to win this game at the weekend, I think we have a good chance to win but it's not going to be easy because Wolves are at home and they're at the bottom of the table.

"I want us to win and keep winning, if you just concentrate on one game at a time maybe we'll end up higher than we thought."

Hughes wants Sidwell to hunt Wolves

21 April 2011

Fulham manager Mark Hughes has backed new signing Steve Sidwell to play a big part for his new side - starting with Saturday's trip to Wolves. Fulham manager Mark Hughes has backed new signing Steve Sidwell to play a big part for his new side - starting with Saturday's trip to Wolves.

The midfielder initially joined on a six-month loan from Aston Villa in January but was given a three-year contract on Monday.

Sidwell could have been playing for the home side on Saturday as he had a deal lined up with Wolves before choosing the Londoners.

"Steven has shown enough in the time that he has been here that he is going to be a big part of where we are going," Hughes said.

"We could have waited but we wanted him to understand that he was a part of what we are trying to do."

"We are delighted to bring him on board."

Fulham could be set to qualify for next season's Europa League competition through the Fair Play system but Hughes said that could seriously disrupt their English Premier League campaign.

When Fulham battled their way to the final of the competition in 2009-10, their league form was hit and Hughes is wary of his players getting too tired.

"I can see the thinking behind the Fair Play system. It does impact on the club's coming season," he said.

"There is a significant amount of games you have to play to play to progress to benefit financially."

And Hughes had kind words for Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier, who went to hospital on Wednesday night with an unspecified health problem. Houllier's condition has been described as comfortable.

"Our thoughts are with Gerard and his family. It's a trying time for them and for the club. We wish him well," Hughes said.

"He has history in the past of poor health and I hope it is nothing serious. When we are in the job that we are, pressure builds up."

"This time of year stress comes to the fore. It's a difficult job and we have to accept that."

"There's a focus on managers and how their teams are doing. That demand falls on the shoulders of the managers."

Midfielder Damien Duff (Achilles) is definitely out and although defender Philippe Senderos is recovering well from a similar injury, he will also be absent.
