PREVIEW

FULHAMVBOLTON WANDERERS Wednesday, April 27 20:00

Premier League

Craven Cottage

By John Ley 6:00AM BST 27 Apr 2011

Wednesday, April 27

Fulham v Bolton Wanderers
Craven Cottage
Kick-off: 20.00 BST

Tale of the game

In February, Bolton won 1-0 at Fulham in the fifth round of the FA Cup. But the last league meeting, at the Reebok Stadium, was a goalless draw. Bolton have never won at Fulham in the Premier League, in nine attempts.

In those games, they have lost seven and drawn two and, in all league football, have not won at Fulham since the 1992-93 season in the old Second Division (third) tier.

And Fulham have won 27 of their 39 points at Craven Cottage while Bolton have won just two away games - and only 24 per cent of their points - on the road.

Fulham gave a first start to striker Eidur Gudjohnsen for the 1-1 draw at Wolves but Bobby Zamora could return.

Captain Danny Murphy and Zamora are expected to be fit. A dead leg forced Murphy off at Molineux, while Zamora was restricted to a late cameo after tweaking his back in training.

It remains to be seen whether winger Damien Duff has recovered sufficiently from his Achilles injury to return after two-and-a-half weeks out, while Philippe Senderos is still working his way back to full fitness having missed the entire season to date.

Bolton will test in-form striker Daniel Sturridge after the player on loan from Chelsea scored his seventh goal in nine games in Sunday's 2-1 win over Arsenal.

He was forced off with an ankle problem late in the game and is a doubt.

Meanwhile, Sam Ricketts (Achilles), Sean Davis and Stuart Holden (knee) are all long-term absentees.

Fulham (probable, 4-4-2): Schwarzer; Baird, Hangeland, Hughes, Salcido; Davies, Murphy, Sidwell, Dempsey; Dembele, Zamora.
Bolton (probable, 4-4-2): Jaaskelainen; Steinsson, Cahill, Knight, Robinson; Lee, Muamba, Elmander, Taylor; K Davies, Sturridge.
Referee: Anthony Taylor. Matches: 10. R2 Y42.

This season: Bolton 0 Fulham 0
Last season: Fulham 1 Bolton 1, Bolton 0 Fulham 0.

Stat of the game: The last three Premier League meetings between these teams have ended in draws.

Betting tip: A draw looks favourite. Try 2-2 at 16-1.

COYLE WARY OF FULHAM THREAT

Posted 27/04/11 06:21

Fulham 4/5, Draw 5/2, Bolton 10/3

Bolton boss Owen Coyle has warned his side they will come up against one of the more dangerous forward lines in the Barclays Premier League when they take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.

The previous two meetings between the sides this season have produced only one goal, with Ivan Klasnic netting the winner for the Trotters in an FA Cup fifth-round meeting in February.

That match saw the return of Bobby Zamora after five months out with a broken leg, while Andy Johnson and Moussa Dembele are also back at peak fitness after lengthy spells on the sidelines.

Cottagers manager Mark Hughes found himself under pressure earlier this season following a run of only two wins in 18 games, but since then they have won five out of seven home matches, with their only defeat coming against Bolton in the cup.

Coyle said: "Mark Hughes is an outstanding manager and he always has been. I think they started with a lot of draws and then they had a little dip, as can happen to any team, but from that point on they've really picked themselves up and they've been going from strength to strength.

"They've had big injuries to key players. Bobby Zamora is a top player and to get him back with the strength in depth they have in that area - Clint Dempsey, Moussa Dembele, Andy Johnson - they're strikers that could play for anybody in the Premier League."

Wednesday night's clash will be another chance for Bolton to show they have fully recovered from the shock of their FA Cup mauling by Stoke at Wembley.

They responded in the best possible way by beating Arsenal 2-1 on Sunday and Coyle is hoping for more of the same at Craven Cottage.

The Scot said: "I didn't worry with this group of players. What happened, as hurtful as it was, was a freak. We've played 41 games and there haven't been many of those where we haven't reached a certain standard.

"We had to try to bounce back quickly. We had six games at that point and we wanted to try to get as many points as we could to continue the progress we've made at the football club.

"We managed to do that on Sunday and now we move on to a very tough game at Fulham. They're a quality side but it's another opportunity to get a win. We've won there in the cup this year and we have to try to do it again."

Victory in west London would lift the Trotters above Everton into seventh place and maintain their slim hopes of securing a Europa League spot.

Coyle added: "Where we sit in the league we recognise there's a clamour of clubs behind us hoping to continue their improvement and move up the league, and equally we've got to look above us to Everton and Liverpool and try to capitalise on our game in hand."

Hughes row ref Oliver relegated to Championship duty after bust up with Fulham boss

By Sportsmail Reporter

Last updated at 1:57 AM on 27th April 2011

Referee Michael Oliver has been relegated to a Championship fixture this weekend after Fulham boss Mark Hughes claimed Saturday's 1-1 draw with Wolves was 'a little bit too much' for the official.

Oliver, 26, will take charge of Millwall versus Swansea, a week after sending Hughes to the stands at Molineux.

Flashpoint: Hughes kicks a drinks bottle in his technical area (above) and is then sent to the stands by referee Oliver (below)

Finish with a bang! Coyle sets Sturridge target but doubts he can keep striker

By Sportsmail Reporter

Last updated at 3:34 PM on 26th April 2011

Bolton boss Owen Coyle has urged on-loan Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge to keep his feet on the ground and finish the season with a bang.

The 21-year-old has been a revelation since moving to the Reebok Stadium in January and scored his seventh goal in nine games in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Arsenal.

Sturridge was a thorn in the Gunners' side all afternoon and also won a penalty that would have put Bolton two goals ahead had captain Kevin Davies been able to convert it.

Man of the moment: Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge has enjoyed a sensational second half of the season on loan at Bolton

Sturridge's form has seen him linked with a senior England call-up and Coyle has no doubts he can follow in the footsteps of former Bolton loanee Jack Wilshere, now a key member of the Arsenal and England sides, provided he keeps the right attitude.

The Trotters boss said: 'How he's developed from being a young boy into a man is testimony to him, and Daniel can do the exact same thing. I've loved working with both of them.

'Whatever's going to come will come his way anyway but he has to make sure that he's concentrating on his job and continues his progress because we all know in football that if you don't then the rug gets pulled from under your feet.

'I've stressed to Daniel on a daily basis that every time he crosses that white line he has to keep showing people that he's the real deal, which he is.

'He's been doing it to this point but we've got five big games between now and the end of the season and I want him to continue that development.'

Coyle admitted when Sturridge arrived at the club that he was not expecting to be able to make the move permanent and that is a discussion he will leave for the end of the season.

Top gun: Sturridge was on target against Arsenal at the weekend and Bolton boss Owen Coyle wants him to continue his rich vein of form

He added: 'We would love to have Daniel here but for that to come to fruition then a number of things need to happen. Obviously Chelsea would need to give their blessing and Daniel would need to want to come back and play the part that he has to this point. That will be for the summer.'

Sunday's impressive victory ensured Bolton put behind them at the first opportunity their 5-0 thrashing by Stoke in the FA Cup semi-finals a week earlier.

Wednesday sees the Trotters back in action with a Premier League trip to Fulham, and Coyle insisted he had no doubts his players would respond in the right manner.

He said: 'I didn't worry with this group of players. What happened, as hurtful as it was, it was a freak. We've played 41 games and there haven't been many of those where we haven't reached a certain standard.

'We had to try to bounce back quickly. We had six games at that point and we wanted to try to get as many points as we could to continue the progress we've made at the football club.

'We managed to do that on Sunday and now we move on to a very tough game at Fulham.

'They're a quality side, they played ever so well at Wolves at the weekend, but it's another opportunity to get a win. We've won there in the cup this year and we have to try to do it again.'

Victory on Wednesday night would take Bolton above Everton into seventh place and maintain their slim hopes of securing a Europa League spot.

Coyle added: 'Where we sit in the league we recognise there's a clamour of clubs behind us hoping to continue their improvement and move up the league and equally we've got to look above us to Everton and Liverpool and try to capitalise on our game in hand tomorrow night.'

FULHAM v Bolton: Murphy and Zamora back for Cottage clash

By Sportsmail Reporter

Last updated at 2:28 PM on 26th April 2011

Fulham captain Danny Murphy and star striker Bobby Zamora are expected to be fit to start Wednesday's Barclays Premier League game with Bolton.

A dead leg forced Murphy off during Saturday's 1-1 draw at Wolves, while Zamora was restricted to a late cameo after tweaking his back in training.

Back in action: Bobby Zamora is expected to shake off an injury concern and return for Fulham

It remains to be seen whether winger Damien Duff has recovered sufficiently from his Achilles injury to return after two-and-a-half weeks out, while Philippe Senderos is still working his way back to full fitness having missed the entire season to date.

Provisional squad: Schwarzer, Baird, Hangeland, Hughes, Salcido, Etuhu, Duff, Davies, Murphy, Sidwell, Dempsey, Duff, Dembele, Zamora, Johnson, Stockdale, Kelly, Gudjohnsen, Kakuta.

Dickson Etuhu puts Fulham on the road to recovery

Dickson Etuhu admits Fulham's dire form away from home has left them nervously looking over their shoulders after a season of transition under Mark Hughes.

Fulham secured a 1-1 draw at second-bottom Wolves on Saturday to leave them five points clear of third-bottom Wigan with five games left.

Dickson Etuhu of Fulham wants to get three points against Bolton

Since Hughes replaced Roy Hodgson last August they have been hit by serious injuries to the likes of Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson but it is their record of just one win in 17 on the road which has meant Fulham are yet to secure Premier League safety.

Three points at home to Bolton tonight will go some way to changing that and Etuhu admitted: 'We have to win a couple of these games coming up but it won't be easy.

'There are a lot of tough games but from our point of view, at least we are out of the relegation zone. We want to finish as high as we possibly can and we have to look to try to catch the likes of Bolton in eighth.'

Etuhu, who last year signed a contract until the summer of 2014, says the players realise their away form must improve if they are to make progress under Hughes next term.

Last year's beaten Europa League finalists have been a different prospect at Craven Cottage but even there, they have drawn too many matches.

'Our away form is something the manager keeps banging on about to us but we are feeling more and more comfortable as a team playing away,' said the midfielder.

'We know if we'd turned some of these draws into wins we'd be a lot higher up the table.

'We have a way the manager wants us to play but it takes time when a new man comes in. He wants to get his team together, bring his players in. It's a transition year for us.'

Fulham vs Bolton – Cottagers brilliant home form to continue

Fulham haven't lost in six games at home as they inch towards Premier League survival

A few weeks ago Fulham were firmly in the relegation mix thanks to a dreadful run that saw them go eight games without a win around the Christmas period.

However, the past few months have seen a dramatic change in fortune for Mark Hughes' side and just three defeats in their previous 13 Premier League games means they have all but guaranteed themselves top flight football for another season.

Things have stuttered somewhat for Bolton recently, with the Trotters winning just two of their last five games – a run that included their 5-0 FA Cup semi final hammering at the hands of Stoke City.

Things were a lot better in their last game though. They overcame Arsenal 2-1 thanks to a last minute header from Tamir Cohen and another win at Fulham would see them overtake Everton and climb into seventh spot in the table.

It will be easier said than done for Bolton though who 'boast' the fourth worst away record in the league. They have beaten Fulham at Craven Cottage once this season though – a tight 1-0 win in the FA Cup – but they should have a tougher time of things this time around.

Fulham are the 5/6 favourites for this game and it's easy to see why. They have not lost in their last six home league games and have conceded only two goals in that period – both in their 3-2 win against Blackburn Rovers.

With none of the previous four games between these sides yielding over 2.5 goals and with a point pretty much guaranteeing Fulham's survival, this should be a tight, low scoring affair. Back under 2.5 goals at 4/6.

Fulham frontman boosts Brentford chances with goal

JONATHAN Cosgrove boosted his chances of earning a deal at Brentford with a goal inside 60 seconds for the reserves at Aldershot this afternoon.

The Fulham frontman, on trial at Griffin Park, set the Bees on their way to a 4-1 win at the Recreation Ground as further goals from Luke Hacker and Emmanuel Oyeleke clinched the points.

Northern Irishman Cosgrove's Craven Cottage team-mate Aaron Pierre failed to feature, while Chelsea defender Ben Sampayo lasted just 26 minutes before being substituted.

However, Reading striker Warren Morgan and Watford duo Oliver Archer and Adam Fenwick did get run-outs.

DANNY Murphy and Bobby Zamora are expected to be fit for tomorrow night's clash at Craven Cottage.

Fulham captain Murphy was forced off at the break during Saturday's draw at Wolves, while Zamora started on the bench after tweaking his back at training.

Damien Duff is a doubt with an Achilles injury, but boss Mark Hughes has hinted that the Irishman should be available again for the visit of Wanderers or for Saturday's trip to Sunderland.

Philippe Senderos is stepping up his return from injury but is still short of match fitness.

Dickson Etuhu targets top-half finish for Fulham

By Ben Rumsby, PA

Tuesday, 26 April 2011

Dickson Etuhu has targeted maximum points from Fulham's next two Barclays Premier League games as they attempt to secure the top-half finish demanded by manager Mark Hughes.

The Cottagers host Bolton tomorrow night before travelling to Sunderland on Saturday ahead of their final three matches of the season.

Victory tomorrow would catapult them from 13th to ninth in the table, while a rare away win at the Stadium of Light would give them every chance of ending a topsy-turvy campaign in the top 10.

Six points in the coming days could even see them challenge eighth-placed Bolton, who currently hold a seven-point advantage over the west Londoners.

But midfielder Etuhu told his club's official website, www.fulhamfc.com: "We're not thinking about Bolton - we're thinking about us.

"Respect to Bolton because they've done really well this season. We played at their place earlier on in the season and we got a draw in what was a tough game.

"Their manager, Owen Coyle, has done really well but when they come to our patch, it's not going to be easy for them.

"We're playing at home and everyone knows Fulham are a good team at home.

"The manager has a way he wants us to play and we're working hard on that - we believe we can win every game.

"We go into every game believing that we can win it and that's the case with the games we've got coming up this week.

"We're going to go out there and approach the game in the right manner but we believe we've got enough to win these games."

Fulham's home record in 2011 has been the key to their resurgence from relegation contenders to top-half hopefuls.

They have dropped just two of the last 18 points on offer at Craven Cottage and also won two FA Cup ties there in emphatic fashion.

Their only defeat since the turn of the year came against Bolton in the fifth round of the cup two months ago.

Etuhu's fellow midfielder Simon Davies said: "That was a frustrating day, they scored an early goal and we were trying to break them down but we couldn't do it.

"We've got five games left, it's a shame we've had too many draws which has held us back, but with five games to go we'll be looking to pick up at least a couple of wins.

"They'll be looking to come and give a good account of themselves. We're going to have to be on our game and take the game to them."

Hughes must decide whether to recall star striker Bobby Zamora, who was restricted to a late cameo in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Wolves after tweaking his back and hip in training.

The 30-year-old is not yet 100% fit after spending six months out with a broken leg and Hughes will not take any chances with him.

He said: "Bobby had a problem after training on Thursday with his back and his hip flexors.

"He didn't train on Friday and we had to work on him all day and Friday night, then he had more treatment on Saturday morning.

"He said he was okay - put his hand up and he wanted to play - but we have got a busy week this week, so it is important that we protect him.

"Obviously, he has had a long-term injury so we are very careful with him.

"I didn't think he was right to start but obviously he has made an impact after coming on."

Senderos close to Fulham return

Defender back in full training after injury problems

By Pete O'Rourke

Last Updated: April 26, 2011 2:47pm

Fulham boss Mark Hughes is hopeful of having Philippe Senderos available before the end of the season.

Senderos joined Fulham on a free transfer from Arsenal last summer, but he is yet to make his debut for the Cottagers after rupturing his Achilles in pre-season.

The Swiss international is now back in full training along with fellow defender Rafik Halliche and Hughes hopes he can give the defender his long-awaited debut before the end of the season.

"Philippe's doing really well. He hasn't got the fitness of the majority of the squad because of the time he has had out," Hughes told the Fulham Chronicle.

"Rafik Halliche is a little bit ahead of him in terms of his fitness.

"We would like to get Philippe a taste of the action but we will have to wait and see."

MATCH PREVIEW

Fulham go into the match with Bolton needing a draw to reach the 40-point mark but even that will not guarantee their safety.

We have got five games until the end of the season and we are looking to get points in each and every one of them

Fulham manager Mark Hughes
Bolton are all but assured of top-flight football next season and after they crushed Arsenal's title hopes last Sunday, manager Owen Coyle has urged them to finish the season with more similar performances.

A strong league finish would go some way to alleviating the huge disappointment of getting thrashed by Stoke in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, a competition the Trotters knocked Fulham out of earlier this year.

Bolton's chances of earning a Europa League spot are slim although Fulham could yet end up playing in Europe next season courtesy of the Fair Play League. Not that Mark Hughes has been setting the best example - the Fulham manager was sent to the stands in Saturday's draw with Wolves for "abuse of a water bottle".

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

• The last three league meetings between the teams have ended in draws, the last two of which were 0-0.

• Bolton have not won a league match at Fulham since a 4-1 win in an old Division Two meeting in 1992. However, they did win at Craven Cottage in the FA Cup earlier this season.

Fulham

• Fulham are the only Premier League club yet to concede a goal from a penalty this season. The only one they gave away was missed by Manchester United's Nani back in August.

• Damien Duff is one goal away from scoring 50 in the Premier League. He would become the third Irishman to reach this milestone after Robbie Keane and Niall Quinn.

• If Clint Dempsey scores, he will equal the club record for most Premier League goals by a single player. Brian McBride and Steed Malbranque lead the way with 32 each.

Bolton

• Bolton have lost eight of their last nine away league games. Their last Premier League win on the road was against Wolves in November.

• On-loan striker Sturridge has scored seven goals in nine league matches for Bolton.

• The Trotters have been in the top half of the table since the beginning of October.

Bolton Wanderers (h)

by Kristian Balkin on Apr 26, 2011 6:06 PM BST

One of the lower points in Mark Hughes' inaugural Fulham season is to be re-staged on Wednesday night when Craven Cottage plays host to Bolton Wanderers for the second time this season; the first being an F.A Cup tie in which Owen Coyle and his comrades stole the headlines and progressed to the next round.

Coyle, in the grand scheme of things, is still a new head at the Reebok Stadium but in fairness, the ex Burnley manager has done wonders in his short time in Lancashire. In his first full season, the Scotsman has led Bolton to a cosy eight place and his side haven't looked like a team scared of European football.

Not only has Coyle hastily changed the fortunes of the once relegation-threatened Wanderers though, but he has also got his side playing a style of football that is both fruitful and easy on the eye, without allowing the stable core of his team to diminish.

It's like Sam Allardyce all over again for the followers of Bolton, except this time around the media enjoy to lavish praise on their new found philosophy rather than berate a lazy yet rewarding kick and run attitude.

Spirits are likely to be fluctuating at present in the Bolton camp with regards to form. Their last fixture brought around an impressive home scalp over Wenger's failing Arsenal but their game previous to that has more than likely left scars that are still waiting to heal. Wembley is yet to be a fond place for Coyle as his side fell to a crushing 5-0 defeat to Stoke.

The Fulham camp is indifferent too, with a missed opportunity still fresh in the minds of the players after the 1-1 draw at Molineux on Saturday. Many felt three points could have been easily achieved via a mixture of a stronger line up and some more clinical finishing. Disregarding the 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford, Hughes will so far be pleased with an April that has brought around an impressive 3-0 win over struggling Blackpool.

In the equivalent Premier League tie earlier in the season, Fulham battled to a reputable 0-0 draw at the Reebok while the parallel fixture of last season also saw neither set of fans go home happy as a Damien Duff goal pegged back a resilient Bolton side.

Both Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy will be fit to start on Wednesday evening while Damien Duff is a doubt to get a look in as he nurses his Achilles injury. Senderos, as reported, is almost back to full fitness but is again a doubt.

For Bolton, prolific loanee Daniel Sturridge could miss out after picking up a minor knock in Bolton's win over Arsenal on Sunday while American Stuart Holden, Ricketts and Davis are certainties to be watching from the stands.

Score Prediction: Fulham 2 - 0 Bolton

Predicted Line-Up: Schwarzer; Baird, Hangeland, Hughes, Salcido; Davies, Murphy, Sidwell, Dempsey; Dembele, Zamora

Johnson refuses to accept Fulham are safe yet

Andy Johnson will try to fire Fulham into the top half of the Premier League tonight, warning: "We're not safe from relegation yet."

The ex-England striker came off the bench at Wolves to score only his third goal of the season and salvage a draw to keep Mark Hughes' side five points clear of the drop zone.

But ahead of Bolton's visit to Craven Cottage, Johnson said: "I don't think we can say we're safe yet.

"It's so tight down at the bottom, and there are still a lot of points to play for. Over the past few years, people have looked at the 40-point mark as the safety line, but it might be higher this year because everyone's beaten each other at the bottom.

"We have to get as many points as we can, and as quickly as we can, because nobody is safe from about 12th place downwards."

Boss Hughes will not face further disciplinary action after being sent to the stands for kicking a water bottle in frustration after Brede Hangeland was booked at Molineux.

COYLE WARY OF FULHAM THREAT

Fulham continuing to treat Zamora comeback with caution

26.04.11 | Andrew Slevison

Fulham manager Mark Hughes says the club will continue to treat striker Bobby Zamora with kid gloves.

The 30-year old has returned to the Cottagers line-up in recent weeks after missing close to six months with a broken leg and although he has showed top form, he is still suffering slightly from the injury.

Ahead of tomorrow night's clash with Bolton at Craven Cottage, Hughes said that Zamora would be watched closely even though he came off the bench to help the club to a 1-1 draw at Wolves on the weekend.

"Bobby had a problem after training on Thursday with his back and his hip flexors," he said.
