European Opportunity

Tuesday 17th May 2011

Fulham are edging ever closer to a return to European football with just one game of the 2010/11 season remaining.

On Monday UEFA confirmed that that the Premier League had finished in the top three of their Fair Play rankings.

With the domestic Fair Play leaders Chelsea having already qualified for the Champions League and Tottenham leapfrogging Liverpool into a fifth place Europa qualifying position following a 2-0 win at Anfield, Fulham could now be set to make a remarkable return to European football should results go their way this weekend.

If Spurs end the season in fifth place on Sunday, Fulham's supporters will have to wait a further five days for official confirmation of whether the Club can look forward to another European adventure, something Manager Mark Hughes is clearly hoping for.

"If we get into the competition [Europa League] we'll be delighted and we'll try and progress as far as we can," Hughes told fulhamfc.com. "I think we're very close but a lot of things have to fall into place before we can say we're playing in Europe next season, but if we are, we'll give it a go.

"We should embrace it, and if we're in it, we'll try our best to be successful. It's a difficult competition to negotiate because of the time frame and the amount of games you have to play. If you want to progress you have to come back very early and start playing football almost immediately when you come back."

Fulham have received a spate of yellow cards in their last two Barclays Premier League matches but Hughes is delighted with his Team's overall disciplinary record and will be hoping to embark on a European adventure with Fulham next season.

"In some games you'll pick up more yellow cards than you will in other games," Hughes explained. "That's a consequence of what we do and we've been very good in terms of our discipline this season."

A Final Flourish

Tuesday 17th May 2011

Having achieved Premier League safety at the end of April, following a 3-0 away win against Sunderland, Fulham are enjoying a late rally that could potentially see the Club finish the season in seventh place should results go their way this weekend.

One player who has remained an integral part of Fulham's success on the pitch over the past few years is Aaron Hughes, and the Northern Ireland international is hoping another highly successful domestic campaign can be followed by a return to European football next season, after a well earned rest this summer.

"Your first priority in this League is to make sure you're playing in it again next year," Hughes explained. "Having done that our aim is to now finish as high as we can this weekend - that would be a very successful season.

"I'm looking forward to a break but we've got ourselves in a position where we can give it a real go against Arsenal and finish high. We'll get a well earned rest after that and it's a case of switching off for a few weeks after the season has ended.

"To play in Europe again would be a massive thing - the whole European experience was fantastic. Last time pre-season was basically competitive Europa League games and we came back very early. We approached every game like a Premier League game and the further we went in the competition the more the belief grew, and then we found ourselves in the Final."

We're all going on a European tour... or are we?

by Jono Russell on May 17, 2011 1:51 PM BST

Fulham's chances of a second appearance in the Europa League have been given a major boost with confirmation from UEFA that England will receive one of the three fair play spots available in the 2011-12 competition.

Now all that is required for another European tour, albeit one starting in the first qualifying round (scheduled to begin in late June), is for Fulham to finish above any other side that hasn't already qualified for Europe in the Fair Play table.

While England's spot in the Fair Play table was calculated by only taking into account matches up until the end of April, the Premier League Fair Play standings encompass the entire season. This means that Fulham's forgettable performance against Liverpool and Sunday's win at St Andrews may cost the Whites dearly, as Fulham collected five yellow cards in both matches.

Currently Fulham occupy second spot on the table behind Chelsea, though Tottenham are equal on average. Due to the out-of-character run of bookings, there's a risk that Spurs might overtake Fulham in the final Fair Play rankings to be calculated following Sunday's games.

Of course, Spurs may still qualify for Europa via their league position. Tottenham's win at Anfield was a handy result for Fulham fans hoping for a summer spent abroad watching the Whites.

Should there be more bookings on Sunday in the battle of the water bottle-abusing managers, there's also the outside chance that either Blackpool or West Ham could overtake Fulham and nab the Fair Play spot. UEFA has made it clear that relegation is no barrier to participation in the competition.

For Fulham to have the best chance of qualifying, ideally we'd want Tottenham to beat a struggling Birmingham at White Hart Lane on Sunday so Harry Redknapp's side seal up fifth spot. It would also be ideal if the referee at the Cottage keeps his cards in his pocket and that Mark Hughes leaves the water bottle theatrics to Arsene Wenger.

Some have speculated that the players and the management staff may not want the hassle of Europa, particularly given how early the side would need to start.

Brede Hangeland voiced his reluctance today: "It is bad if you get that Europa League spot because you have to start playing games too early."

"For Premiership teams, we play 11 and a half months a year. You can't ask teams to play in the middle of the summer, or at a time when the players should really be on the beach resting," Hangeland said.

Hopefully the apathy to starting in late June isn't widespread in the squad, as starting at such an early stage in the competition would allow Mark Hughes to rest some of his senior players anyway.

The finalised Premier League Fair Play table will be confirmed next week once the season concludes, giving us all plenty of time to convince partners or friends that the likes of Azerbaijan or Moldova make an attractive holiday destination in late June.

Fulham set to launch bid for Cole

02:00 PM 17 May, 2011

Carlton Cole is a key target for Fulham Football Club.

Mark Hughes has enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at Craven Cottage, and he is eager to build on his progress next season.

The Welshman will be handed a decent budget to spend in the summer, which could be boosted further by the mooted £4million sale of Andy Johnson to West Bromwich Albion.

Fans FC understand Hughes has made England international Cole a top target ahead of the window, and he should have a decent chance of landing the forward.

Following West Ham United's relegation to the Championship a number of players are set to leave Upton Park, including the 27-year-old former Chelsea man.

To Europe or Not to Europe? That is the Question

Posted: May 17, 2011 by Kyle

It looks like Spurs are about to wrap up the #5 spot in the table. I don't want to count Liverpool out yet, but it seems that Tottenham are in a much better position, one point up and hosting Birmingham City while Liverpool are traveling to Villa Park.

So, that means chances are Fulham are to go to Europe via UEFA Respect Fair Play and all is happy at Craven Cottage....or is it?

Mark Hughes in the past had expressed not displeasure but caution when it comes to a Fair Play bid in European soccer. It's been heavily documented that you must play many more matches than a normal bid into the Europa League, and the possible draining of your starters that it brings with it. Hughes, however, recently said he's ready for the challenge.

"If we get into the competition, we will be delighted and we will try and progress as far as we can. I think we are very close, but a lot of things have to fall into place before we can say we are playing in Europe next season, but if we are, we will give it a go. We should embrace it, and if we are in it, we will try our best to be successful. It is a difficult competition to negotiate because of the time frame and the amount of games you have to play. If you want to progress you have to come back very early and start playing football almost immediately when you come back."
Defender Aaron Hughes had even less worries about Europa League play, and is rearing to get back into the competition:

"To play in Europe again would be a massive thing – the whole European experience was fantastic. Last time pre-season was basically competitive Europa League games and we came back very early. We approached every game like a Premier League game and the further we went in the competition the more the belief grew, and then we found ourselves in the final."
However, Hughes' center-back partner Brede Hangeland is way less excited for the prospect of extra matches of European play.

"It is bad if you get that Europa League spot because you have to start playing games too early. If it's to be regarded as a prize, then you need to get into the first round proper or the group stages. For Premiership teams, we play 11 and a half months a year. You can't ask teams to play in the middle of the summer, or at the time when the players should really be on the beach resting. The people running football need to look at the demands on the players sooner rather than later. It's all very good playing games week in, week out but, especially at the end of the season, you need to recover and we're stretching it a little bit too far. The people running football need to look at the demands on the players sooner rather than later. It's all very good playing games week in, week out but, especially at the end of the season, you need to recover and we're stretching it a little bit too far."
So while Mark and Aaron Hughes are both ready to go, Hangeland is worried about less time on the beach. Does this bother you at all? It sure tells me where his head is right now, and its certainly not on the pitch. If a player here in the US either in the NFL or the MLB were to say something like this, he would be slammed by the media and probably even get at least a talking to by the coach. I hope that he hasn't already mentally checked out onto the beach before the Arsenal match. Maybe Mark Hughes will cover the pitch at the Cottage with sand just for Brede.

You can make your thoughts heard. I am expecting 100% of fans to want Europa League play, simply because it's exciting for the club and we as fans don't feel the effects of more matches. But maybe you think it could affect the team's Premier League play later in the season. Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish has come out and said the extra play it took to win the Carling Cup has cost them a lot in the PL and could cost them relegation. Whatever your opinion may be, take a vote on the left side of the page here on whether you think a Fair Play bid into the Europa League would be good for Fulham.
