Perhaps one would 'split a topic' if discussions were going a bit off-topic but in an interesting direction - you could split the thread into two relevent pieces. E.g "Who should we start against Spurs?" leads into an interesting and heated debate about whether or not Bobby and AJ work well together. The replies pertaining to Bobby and AJ could be split off into a thread entitled "Do Bobby and AJ work well together?". Guessing, obviously.
