The reason the site is getting a lot of applications to join is that webmasters are trying to get links back to their sites from the profile page. Google decides on a site's position in the search engines mostly on the number of links from other sites - it's a basis for calculating the importance of a website. FOF must have found its way onto a list of sites to link to. Also webmasters are looking for links from sites with high 'page rank'. FOF's PR has risen recently to PR3 which is quite high.
