Sorry being a bit think here, but can we sign players outside the transfer window if they are free and there would be no transfer fee? Also can we only take on a player on loan in a transfer window?

Only if they were out of contract when the window closed.

Also we can only have a 25 man squad for League games so if we want to do that we'd need to leave
space(s) in the squad by naming fewer players than that.

And only until January

No problem leaving space in the squad - we can only name 21 right now as far as I can tell:
GK (3) Schwarzer, Somogyi, Etheridge
DF (8) Kelly, Riise, Hangeland, Baird, Senderos, Hughes, Salcido, Halliche
MF (7) Sidwell, Murphy, Gecov, Duff, Riise, Etuhu, Dempsey, Davies
FW (3) Johnson, Zamora, Dembele

U-21s don't count: Briggs, Smith, Kasami, Frei, Donegan, Dalla Valle, Trotta, etc.

Etheridge is under 21 but expect Stockdale to be in in case we need to recall him.

I'd be surprised if we didn't make 2 or 3 more signings but 25 players over 21 ought, frankly, to be too many.
