We did not buy our way out of the bottom div, I remember the team being a bunch of misfits put together by Adams on a shoestring.
We git promoted and then uncle mo and his £200M arrived.

Correct... Adams got us out of the bottom tier, and Mo hadn't arrived at that point.

But the wider context of "we wouldn't be where we are today without Mo" is probably spot on, and it would be hard to find any examples of clubs getting to the Prem without some form of cash boost from a sugar-daddy.

Mr Imperial White - I think Wolves are an interesting example, whilst they are financially well ran they have had Jack Hayward providing significant investment too over the years. Even when he sold up, a condition of sale was that £30m be ploughed in to the club.

Perhaps Burnley may be an example.

Come what may, in the vast majority of cases it takes a significant investment to get in to the top tier.

Agree. These days, unless you are a team that has yo-yo'd between the two top leagues, then you are most likely to have been the beneficiary of a cash injection. very few clubs can self finance themselves and even less can do it and have success on the pitch.

Everton are a worrying case at the moment - they are in dire trouble, despite having been in the top league for 50 odd years.
