I am not going to slag him off, but here, let me slag him off.

Lol, fair play, I just got a little carried away as I wrote it, cheers for calling me up on it

Sometimes football supporters remind me of 8th grade girls. When they get a BEST FRIEND FOREVER, then they feel it must be necessary to HATE the girl who their BFF competes with.

I'm pretty much willing to bet that around 75% of the anti-Etuhu element rate Sidwell as one of their two or three favorite players. Since they play the same position, it is then incumbent on them to slag off Etuhu every time he plays -- even in a 4-1 victory -- so as to re-emphasize how their BFF is soooo much better.

Etuhu does what Etuhu does very very well. Sidwell is the same, although he's at his very best as a box-to-box midfielder when he stops well short of the opponent's penalty area [and yes, I know he scored last night.] I'm not concerned when either of them is in the lineup because each of them has game smarts and skills, and each of them is going to contribute to the Fulham midfield. Slagging Etuhu's performance last night beause it was inferior to to others on the pitch is silly. I can't think of a player NOT named Lionel Messi for whom you couldn't name a better practitioner in his position.

Lastly, this "Dickson never passes to an teammate more than five yards away" thing is risible. I'm reminded of a friend -- years ago -- who kept saying "They NEVER call traveling in the NBA." He said it so often, that I finally called him on it and said "I"ll give you $5 before the game. You give me $1 every time the ref calls travelling. I think I got $9 in return." Along the same lines, I'd offer  5 quid to anyone before an Etuhu 90 minutes, if they'd give me 1 for each pass he COMPLETES longer than 5 yards.

What's up with FOF? As I'm typing this, it's jumping around like it's palsied?

Me personally, I think Sidwell is a decent midfielder however I don't really consider them competing for the same role as they play completely differently.

My gripe with Etuhu is that if under any pressure with the ball, he cracks and gives it away. If his job is to provide Murphy an option to pass to, fine, he does that well, but very rarely do you see him getting the ball from the fullbacks or centrebacks, something Murphy always does. Same as when we are attacking, Murphy is always receiving the ball from the wide players or strikers. To me, it just seems that Etuhu only ever touches the ball if someone wants to play a one-two to get a yard more space, nothing more. Essentially I just think he has no ball playing ability, and if you look at defensive midfielders, they help the ball out from defence, Etuhu doesn't do that, Murphy does.

I see the point in having a midfielder who holds his position well, and provides a simple ball option for his midfield players, however I guess my expectation of a defensive midfielder would be to be confident in possession and find a way to work the ball out from defence. This is what the Parkers, Busquets, Makeales, and most other defensive midfileders etc do, they look for the ball from defence, then pass it ahead for the better players, so effectively we should have a defensive midfielder receiving the ball off say Riise, opening his body upfield to then look to pass to Murphy, or Dempsey or Zamora, instead of Murphy receiving the ball to look up and having to play it long

With the regards to the Murphy plays better with Etuhu next to him, perhaps its true and Murphy does play better with Etuhu next to him, but perhaps that is because we rely on Murphy so much more, due to Etuhu's lack of ball playing ability, to get on the ball and he therefore shines. The downfall of this is, with Murphy coming into his twilight of his career in the next year or so, why place more importance on him or the player left to fill his boots.

Ways of stopping Fulham play when Sidwell and Murphy in midfield - Put pressure on Murphy and Sidwell and push onto Hangeland who tries to run with the ball.

Ways of stopping Fulham play when Etuhu and Murphy are in midfield - Put pressure on Etuhu who has no pass but the short pass to Murphy.

Ways of stopping Fulham play when Etuhu and Sidwell are in midfield - Put pressure on Sidwell as Etuhu plays so deep then as to cancel any need to count him as anything but a defender.

As an 8th grade girl may I object to the scurrilous attempt to make us sound like football fans.

The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

The sooner Etuhu is sold/released the better. Yes, he's an okay defensive outlet but he isn't even that good at what he does. In this day and age we need two central midfielder with both a defensive and attacking outlet and Etuhu doesn't have this. I've never seen a midfielder look so uncomfortable with the ball at his feet. I feel we oppress our own teams ability when Etuhu plays because he just isn't on the same level as the other players. I'm all for a Baird/Sidwell, Baird/Murphy or Sidwell/Murphy partnership but I don't think Baird should go in midfield until Hughes is back and we've arranged a solid back four.

I'm a bit confused by the point your trying to make in your post. The way I read it, which is no doubt not the point you are making, if you pressure any of our midfielders, we get exposed.

I do agree with that bit I think, however if I was a manager playing against Fulham I would put more pressure on Murphy, making it difficult for him to receive the ball (as Moyes got Rodwell to man mark Silva). If Etuhu is playing next to Murphy and Murphy cannot receive the ball, we would look lost as Etuhu doesn't help our distribution. With Sidwell next to him, we would look slightly better as at least he is willing to show for the ball

Etuhu is a big man... a beast is the best word i can think for him.  Yes, he does not have the best eye for a pass or able to dribble around defenders but he is a really large man.  You need people like this in the Prem when you play teams like Stoke, Blackburn, Bolton, etc...  We need to be able to defend and push people around especially when we are away and we are not keeping the ball like we do at home.  I am the first to say that he has struggled in some games like last night but is a good person to have in the squad none the less.

Another thing i notice with Dickson is that he has a motor that never stops.  He is always tracking back and getting stuck in even though he has been running around the whole game.  He gives for the cause and is one of the Fulham veterans and an experienced International.

He sometimes shows up with a headed goal or a goal like he hit against Man City a couple years ago.  Still a good squad player that should get the run out when some are injured.

Do I want him starting every game... no!  but dropping him out of the team altogether every game is not advised.

Thank you, very well put and spot on IMO.

That said, and whisper it so the twitching thieving spiv doesn't hear, take Murph out of our game and we're up a certain creek without a certain instrument anyway.

I think this aspect is massively overplayed on here. If you take any teams creative heart out, they will struggle. Obviously Fulham have more of a reliance on Murphy, but Jol is doing his best to remedy this.

If we mark Modric out of the game Spurs will struggle. When Silva went off for Man City we dominated them.

he's not a bad player by any means and his passing is derided so much to the extent that it's now underrated, he gives the ball away relatively little and once in a while can open up play with a decent ball. sidwell is more dynamic in possession and that is probably needed (i mean, it's not as if murphy's movement is bad either just that he can't find space like he used to). he is more specialised than Murphy, Sidwell and Gecov and so our options would suddenly be very limited in central midfield if he were to go.

people make it sound so easy, 'hodgson could see what we saw, so only made him pass 5 yards and etc etc' but fact is it really isn't, or, and its a bit of a cliche, anyone could do it. for a player who played practically the whole of our 5 month push to our highest ever finish and similarly was a mainstay in our europa league season he gets an awful lot of disrespect. i'm not saying he's better than sidwell but appreciate him at the least.

gave the ball away last night for the first goal very poorly, altho ill also watch the goal again to see the return pass he got cos i didnt pay attention to it at the time, and miscontrolled a ball from murphy in the first half. other than that i can't think of any poor times he gave the ball away last night. similarly he didn't open their defence up, but he kept possession with short passes and he recycles the ball quite well actually, and the busquets comparison that rich makes is certainly a good one.

I think MJG sums the situation up well for me. Dickson does what he does but we need to progress and his limited ability will always restrict that, especially as Danny increasingly has to pace himself and choose when to show for the ball and when to take a quick rest.

We are too predictable as we approach the final third. Our first choice left back rarely drives forward, preferring to check and play the ball inside or back. if Briggs were ready, he gives us more down the wing. If we're lucky, Dickson in possession plays perhaps 1 forward pass in 10 or 12 and shoots once in every 3 games or so. We can do better. Why not try Gecov, who looked quite capable and composed against Chelsea at the Bridge.

Sidwell is a revelation for me and thank goodness, does seem to be first choice now. Bairdinho also deserves a chance, once Aaron is fit and well.

Sidwell gives the ball away as much as if not more than Etuhu.

Me-ate-Live, innit??

Jezzz !! three pages of poor old Dixon and not a word on JAR's memory laps.  He passed ( read lost) the ball to a red shirt so often, he must have thought he was back at Liverpool   064.gif  064.gif.

From Tiff, this is an incredibly well reasoned opinion:

have just watched the first half again, one thing which has stood out is dispite the abuse dickson has got today he gave the ball away only twice! less then any other player on the pitch. He had 2 others which were intercepted but only for a throw in for us. His header lead to the corner for AJs first. He gave one foul inside thier half and had one slip where he lost the ball (something most players did at least once) hardly deserving of the comments he has had on here. The muck up for thier goal he gave the ball to kelly who should of cleared but instead gave it stright back with no call to DE to get rid. He looked up saw nothing on and got it pinched. From their Hangland fell, risse fell it could have been stopped. Go's to show how blinkered some peoples views are.
