Next four games vital - Bardsley
Phil Bardsley looks ahead to tomorrow's Barclays Premier League game against Fulham.

Phil Bardsley says Sunderland will kick off a "vital" run of games when Fulham arrive on Wearside this weekend.

Three of Sunderland's next four fixtures are at home, beginning with the visit of Martin Jol's Cottagers on Saturday.

The Black Cats then take on Wigan on November 26 and head to Wolves (December 4) before returning to Wearside to face Blackburn on December 11.

Steve Bruce's men have enjoyed an upturn in form recently and Bardsley says they will go into Saturday's game on a high and looking to put the narrow defeat to Manchester United behind them.

"We are progressing and going in the right direction we've got that belief back and the team are enjoying themselves," Bardsley said.
"The new lads are finding their feet and we're starting to show some real good form.

"So it's now up to us as a group to climb up the league and get some points on the board.

"Fulham is always a tough game. They're a well organised outfit but I think with the form we've been showing everyone's confident. The next four games are vital and hopefully we can take maximum points.

"They've had a few changes recently, Roy Hodgson and Mark Hughes have both come and gone and now Martin Jol, but they never seem to change their style of play.

"They're always well organised and difficult to beat but if we perform like we have been I'm sure we can get the victory we want."

Hands off Dembele, says Jol
by DAN on NOVEMBER 18, 2011

Martin Jol has said he will do everything he can to keep Moussa Dembele at Craven Cottage.

The Belgian forward was quoted in a Belgian newspaper as saying that he would be interested in a move to Tottenham, who have been linked with another move for the 24 year-old, but later released a statement insisting he had been misquoted. Spurs have already had two bids for Dembele, worth around £10m, rejected and Jol is keen to keep hold of a player he clearly admires.

For me it's important that I've got good players. Maybe someone told you about Tottenham, I don't even know. There's a lot of interest in good players and I've got a few. It's about us to keep them here, and that's what we're trying to do.

Larsson misses Fulham clash

Sebastian Larsson is suspended for Sunderland's home clash with Fulham while Connor Wickham is out with a knee injury.
Sweden international Larsson will sit out the game after reaching five bookings for the campaign, while striker Wickham is facing weeks on the sidelines with the knee injury he suffered early on last time out at Manchester United.

Defender Titus Bramble, who was expected to play for the reserves in midweek after being fined for bringing the club into disrepute, also has a knee problem and is unavailable, as are keepers Simon Mignolet (fractured nose and eye socket) and Craig Gordon (knee).

Ahmed Elmohamady is likely to play against the Cottagers in place of Larsson and boss Steve Bruce admits his boots are tough ones to fill.

Bruce said: "When I bump into Sunderland fans, they haven't seen someone like Seb for a long time.

"We're a constant threat from set-pieces and to be fair, that's why we brought the kid here. He gives you something else.

"Not only is he a very good footballer, but when you've got something in your locker like he's got, you are a threat."

He added: "Every time we had a free-kick at Old Trafford, we were a threat because of his delivery. It makes such a difference to your team when you've got someone from set-pieces who can deliver.

"So we'll miss that, but it's what football is."

Sunderland will again have Keiren Westwood in goal as fellow keepers Simon Mignolet and Craig Gordon are injured.

Titus Bramble has a knee injury and joins Connor Wickham and Fraizer Campbell on the sidelines.

Fulham will be without defender Stephen Kelly after he suffered a groin injury on Republic of Ireland duty last week.

Aaron Hughes and Zdenek Grygera remain unavailable, but midfielder Steve Sidwell could return.

MATCH PREVIEW
Both Sunderland manager Steve Bruce and his Fulham counterpart Martin Jol believe the overall performance of their respective teams this season hasn't been as mediocre as their current league positions would suggest, but the two men will also be acutely aware that success is measured in points rather than performance.

The grim reality is that either could find themselves in the relegation zone by Saturday evening after both have endured remarkably similar starts to the season.

Fulham can point to the fact they remain the only team to take a point off Manchester City this season

Two wins, four draws, five defeats and 10 points are the bare statistics for both. A single home win was earned in convincing fashion - Sunderland thumped Stoke 4-0, Fulham hammered QPR 6-0 - before away successes against sides already mired in the relegation zone - Sunderland winning at Bolton, and Fulham at Wigan - kept them hovering just above the safety line.

Fulham can point to the fact they remain the only team to take a point off Manchester City this season and can recount hard luck stories experienced in the defeats against Everton and Tottenham. A draw at Liverpool and narrow defeats against Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United suggest Sunderland probably should be higher up the table as well.

This is Fulham's 25th match of the season due to their commitments in the Europa League. Cottagers fans have relished their club's forays into Europe but may be frustrated that their team have won seven times - often against weaker opposition admittedly - compared to just twice domestically. Martin Jol has used only 20 players in the Premier League so far and it will be interesting to see how stretched their resources become.

The early-season pressure seems to have eased on Steve Bruce. He will have been heartened that the knee injury suffered by young striker Connor Wickham at Old Trafford should keep him out for weeks rather than months and must view this match and up-coming games against Wigan, Wolves and Blackburn as a real opportunity for his team to punch their weight. As defender Wes Brown put it this week: "it's time to man up".

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

Sunderland and Fulham have played exactly the same number of Premier League games: 391. Fulham have won 118 games to Sunderland's 103 and the Black Cats have lost 192 times compared with Fulham's 158.
Sunderland have failed to score in five of their last six Premier League matches against Fulham, including any of the last four.
But Fulham have only won two of their last nine league games against Sunderland - although they did win their last meeting 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland

But they have only kept one clean sheet in their last 13 Premier League games at home.
Four of the six goals scored direct from free-kicks this season have come in Sunderland matches: two for and two against.
Fulham

Fulham have won just 12 of their last 100 away matches in the Premier League - one of those was against Sunderland last season.
Against Tottenham, Fulham became the first side since the 2006-07 season to have 13 shots on target in a Premier League match and still lose.
Danny Murphy has been substituted in his last eight appearances for Fulham.
Fulham have used just 20 players in the Premier League so far, fewer than any other team.

Sunderland's Phil Bardlsey says Fulham game at Stadium of Light could help define Premier League season

PHIL Bardsley admits Sunderland's next four games could define their season.

Tomorrow's Stadium of Light clash with Fulham is the first of four encounters against sides lying alongside Sunderland in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Despite taking just 10 points from the opening 11 games, full-back Bardsley insists Sunderland must be confident that they can put their campaign into gear.

Bardsley told SportMail: "They're possibly defining games of our season.

"They're massive games against Fulham, Wigan, Wolves and Blackburn.

"They're not easy teams to play against, but looking at them on paper, you fancy your chances.

"We know they'll be difficult though and we know we'll have to be at our best like we were at Old Trafford.

"Hopefully we can get off to a good start with three points against Fulham."

Three Premier League clubs targeting Juventus striker

Juventus striker could be heading to England

Juventus striker Amauri looks set to make a move to a London club after admitting that he is "counting the days" until January when he can leave the Italian giants.

The Brazilian-born Italian international has found himself continually left out of the Juventus starting side.

In anticipation of his leaving the club for free when the transfer window opens, the 31-year-old has been linked with a move to England and Tottenham, Queens Park Rangers and Fulham top of the list to receive the striker.

"I hope that the situation can be resolved as soon as possible," he told Sky Italia

"I have no other option but to leave Juventus in January."

Amauri has also been linked with a possible move to France but says that he does not know what is happening in reality.

"There are people who are working on a move for me and it'll be their job to find me a new club."

Echo Jury: Kieran Kirby looks ahead to the visit of Fulham

FULHAM travel to Stadium of Light, their second visit to the North East this season following on from their game at the Sports Direct Arena.

Fulham don't travel particularly well but generally we help teams and players get out of bad runs. Hopefully this isn't the case tomorrow.

Fulham have some good attacking players in Zamora, Johnson, Dempsey, Duff and Dembele but our defence looked good against Man Utd.

I'd start with the same back four with O'Shea to miss out. The recent form of Kieran Richardson has been very impressive, long may it continue.

We're missing Larsson through suspension which will, more than likely, see Elmohamady come in to the side. We need to see a vast improvement in him. I would play Sess wide right and push Colback on to the left and play Vaughan alongside Catts, but I think Bruce will start with Elmo.

Ji should start up front alongside Bendtner – he had a good second half at Man Utd. Hopefully that continues.

I think it will be a tight game, a little nervy at times.

Prediction: Sunderland 1 Fulham 1

Murphy's Law: Why Fulham must get something at Sunderland

"What lies ahead this weekend is a trip to the Stadium of Light, followed with matches against Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd and Chelsea, all before the turn of the year."

Normally I feel that International friendlies are a waste of time. Your club's best players often return injured and/or tired, and the teams are chopped and changed between, and during, matches new players are given little chance to show what they can do.

However this two week break from club football has come at the right time for Fulham - players and fans alike.

After the football Gods decided that Fulham were not worthy of even a point from the last two home games (their intervention can be the only explanation for what occurred in both games), the international break has given time to forget about what has happened and focus on what lies ahead.

What lies ahead this weekend is a trip to the Stadium of Light, followed with matches against Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd and Chelsea, all before the turn of the year. With this tough run in mind it is vital Fulham come away from this weekend with something.

Fulham should find Bobby Zamora, Damien Duff and Stephen Kelly on a high after a successful two weeks their national teams, Zamora winning his first start for England and the Irish duo securing qualification for Euro 2012 (Well done the Boys in Green).

It is another international player that is causing me concern and that is, Norwegian left back John Arne Riise. Matthew Briggs must be scratching his head that he has had to make do with Europa League and Carling Cup action.

Fulham also have Baird or Kelly who have done well at left back but the manager constantly picks Riise.

Riise was signed 10 years too late in his Liverpool days he would run up and down the pitch turning defence into attack and had a decent final ball.

Riise IS willing to get forward and try a 'Hollywood' shot or pass (which normally has the fans behind the goal ducking for cover).

He will then take a stroll back forcing Hangeland to constantly cover for him (poor Brede has to do this at international level as well).

I'm glad Fulham seem to have put an end to him taking every free kick now they need to stop searching for him with every attack because at the end of day he his first and foremost a defender.

In his recent Full Time interview Riise stated that as a young boy of 14 he used to get up at 6.00am and go for a run in order to improve his stamina, well Johnny boy I suggest you start setting that alarm for 5.30am.

Martin Jol talked about wanting to lower the age of the squad, now is the time to give youth a chance.

Fulham Preview - Home, Novemebr 19

SUNDERLAND RETURN to Premier League action this weekend with a visit from strugglers Fulham.

It's been an odd sort of season for the Cottagers who have doubtless suffered thanks to their Europa League involvement.

Under new boss Martin Jol, the 2011-12 campain began in earnest back on June 30 with a 3-0 win at home to NSI Runavik. The season had ended just a handful of weeks before.

Of course, Fulham's squad is super-fit in order to cope with their early start to the season and continued involvement in Europe, where they currently sit second in Group K. However, with a fairly thin squad it has been a tricky balancing act for Jol.

Despite rotating to the best of his ability the Dutchman has seen the West London outfit win just twice in the league this season and thus they currently reside in 16th place.

Jol does however have the fervent backing of his chairman, Mohammed Al-Fayed. That backing though could well just be in order to stick the knife in for former gaffer Mark Hughes who resigned at the end of last season. Al-Fayed has been quick to heap praise on himself for 'rescuing' the former Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers man whilst also lamenting his decision to leave by declaring Jol as 'more handsome'.

Backing the former Ajax and Tottenham boss in the transfer market has been equally importat for the colourful former Harrods owner with no fewer than nine summer arrivals - although at least three of those were made with one eye on the future.

Former FC Twente forward Bryan Ruiz was purchased with the present in mind and the flamboyant Costa Rican playmaker hasn't disappointed. Ruiz may have made just one Premier League start so far but Fulham fans saw exactly what he is capable with when he deftly lofted over Tim Howard in the 3-1 loss to Everton last month. An overall scoring record of 62 in 122 league games for Gent and Twente suggests there is more to come however.

Ferocious full-back John-Arne Riise is a name well-known to the top-flight having enjoyed seven years with Liverpool before a three-year stint in Italy with Roma. Riise helped bring the Champions League to Anfield during his time on Merseyside and built something of a reputation for a howitzer of a free-kick. He's yet to register as a White but it won't be long. Riise is also now at the same club as his younger brother, Bjorn-Helge - currently on-loan at Portsmouth.

Tempestuous ex-Palermo midfield schemer Patjim Kasami is one who with time on his side looks like a prospect whilst also featuring in recent weeks for Jol's side. The 19 year-old Swiss-born midfielder has Macedonian roots but elected to play for Switzerland and has represented them at U17, U18 and U21 levels.

As well as the new faces, the ever-reliable names remain - Brede Hangeland, Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey and Mark Schwarzer all still on the books. And, with that tried and tested blend of youth and experience you fancy Fulham will put aside their European distractions sooner rather than later and head up the league table.

Jol has something of a crisis at right-back with Zdenek Grygera and Stephen Kelly both injured. Simon Davies is a long-term injury.

Sunderland will be without the suspended Sebastian Larsson whilst John O'Shea and Connor Wickham are both injured.

Titus Bramble is not yet match-fit following internal suspension. David Meyler got 90 minutes for the reserves on Wednesday and could push for a place on the bench.

Likely Line-ups:

Sunderland: Westwood; Bardsley, Brown, Turner, Richardson; Elmohamady, Colback, Cattermole (c), Vaughan, Sessegnon; Bendtner.

Fulham: Schwarzer; Baird, Hangeland, Briggs, Riise; Dempsey, Murphy (c), Sidwell, Duff; Dembele & Zamora.
