Fulham star set to return for Arsenal clash

STEPHEN Kelly is due to return to training this week ahead of Saturday's clash with Arsenal.

The Fulham full-back missed last weekend's stalemate at Sunderland after suffering a groin injury on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

With Zdenek Grygera sidelined for six months with a serious knee problem, Kelly is the natural replacement on the right side of defence.

And the former Birmingham star should be fit for the trip to the Emirates.

Newcastle head queue for Clyne as Pardew ponders January move for Palace youngster

Talk of the Toon: Young Crystal Palace defender Nathaniel Clyne is wanted by Newcastle

Newcastle are leading the race to sign Nathaniel Clyne from Crystal Palace.

The 20-year-old right-back is regarded as one of the hottest prospects outside the Premier League and has been tipped to make the grade at the highest level.

His contract with the Eagles expires next summer and despite extended negotiations with the club, the Stockwell-born full-back has so far failed to agree new terms.

Everton, Fulham, Wolves and Blackburn have all run the rule over the defender in recent months. But Alan Pardew has stolen a march on his rivals and views Clyne as a prime candidate to replace Danny Simpson.

Simpson has stalled on an improved five-year deal with the Magpies, which has been on the table since the summer.

The former Manchester United trainee joined from Blackburn in August 2009, initially on loan, in a deal that made him one of the lowest paid in the squad.

Since then Simpson has excelled for the Magpies and feels the offer does not reflect his development since joining the club.

In limbo: Danny Simpson (left) has not agreed a new deal at Newcastle

Newcastle, though, have made it clear they will not be upping their offer and Pardew may even make a January bid for Clyne to beat off the competition.

A transfer fee would prove more profitable to Palace, who would also be in line for a compensation package, if Clyne switched in the summer because of his age.

However, it is believed the England Under 21 international is intent on seeing out the campaign with Palace where he is gaining experience and developing as a regular in Dougie Freedman's team.

Blackburn Rovers launch bid for Fulham striker Andy Johnson

According to reports Blackburn Rovers are set to make an offer for Fulham striker Andy Johnson.

The Daily Mail claims Rovers boss Steve Kean is eyeing the Cottagers marksman.

It is understood Rovers will offer Johnson a two-year contract and a weekly wage of
£40,000 a week.

However, before they can do so they need to persuade Fulham to sell in January.

Although Martin Jol says Johnson is not for sale, a £2 million bid may be enough for a player who will be free in the summer.

Cattermole: The goals will come

Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole insisted he was satisfied with a draw against Fulham at the weekend.

The Black Cats twice hit the crossbar but could not find a way past the Cottagers at the Stadium of Light, but Cattermole was also called upon to clear a Dickson Etuhu header off the line in a match which could have gone either way.

Cattermole told the club's official website: "(Fulham) came here, got themselves set up and we needed to be patient. Maybe we rushed things too much and ended up getting caught at the back.

"The lads were so eager to score a goal; that's not a bad thing but we need to use our experience and nous.

"If we keep believing in ourselves and doing the right thing, the goals will come."

The Wearsiders have home games against Wigan and Blackburn within the next month, and a trip to Molineux to face Wolves coming up on December 4.
