Old Boy Picks Up Bad Injury!

Some sad news filtered through yesterday.

Zoltan Gera, who left Craven Cottage last summer to return to the Hawthorns, picked up a knee injury on Saturday as West Bromwich Albion lost to Spurs.

Gera, who went down without being challenged is looking at a spell of something close to six months on the sidelines, thereby ending his season earlier than he`d have anticipated.

Zoltan was a good servant to our club and I`m sure you`ll join me in wishing him a speedy recovery from what appears to be a very nasty knee injury.

Fulham target Wigan Athletic striker Hugo Rodallega

According to reports Fulham are interested in Wigan Athletic striker Hugo Rodallega.

The People claims Fulham boss Martin Jol is hoping to tie up a deal before the January transfer window opens.

The Colombian is out of contract in June and the struggling Latics could cash in on him.

The 26-year-old is believed to be Jol's No.1 target in the mid-season window, with a £3 million bid mooted.

Rodallega was at one time a target for Arsenal and is believed to being tracked by clubs in Italy, Turkey and the Middle East.

Reserves draw with Chelsea
by DAN on NOVEMBER 29, 2011

Fulham's reserves let a two-goal lead slip as they drew with Chelsea at Motspur Park last night.

Billy McKinlay's played the better football in the first period and earned a justified reward for their high-tempo start. The first chance was fashioned by a fine through ball from Tom Donegan with the young midfielder sending Orlando Sa clean through on goal, but Chelsea goalkeeper Jamal Blackman sprinted out of his goal to beat the Portuguese striker to the ball. Blackman showed impressive agility to turn Bjorn Helge Riise's first-time shot over the bar.

The Blues then threatend themselves with Milan Lalkovic going to ground under a Dan Burn challenge in the penalty area but the referee waved away Chelsea's penalty appeals. Left back Ben Gordon lacked a bit of composure in front of goal, with his close range shot parried by Csaba Somogyi.

Fulham took the lead in the twelfth minute as the unmarked Sa rose to head home an accurate Riise cross after Chelsea had failed to clear a corner. The marking might have been apologetic but Sa's athleticism was an impressive sign at a time when Fulham are short of physical options up front.

Chelsea might have managed an equaliser from a free-kick when Billy Clifford's excellent delivery found Lucas Piazon but the Brazilian's deft header drifted agonisingly wide.

The home side doubled their lead in the 27th minute. Alex Kacaniklic split the Chelsea defence with a terrific through ball and Donegan raced away from Rohan Ince down the right before sending a low shot past Blackman to the delight of the home crowd. It might have got even better before the break, but Sa had a goal ruled out for offside – as he side-footed home a Riise cross. Chelsea might have halved their arrears just before the whistle, but Somogyi produced a fine save to keep out Piazon's shot after fine approach play from Todd Kane.

Dermot Drummy must have had stern words with his side at half-time as they emerged far more adventurous and gradually began to take control of the contest. Ten minutes into the second period, a fine run from Lalkovic presented Nathaniel Chalobah with a glorious opportunity but the Chelsea captain could only guide his shot wide. Fulham were only spasmodically threatening on the break, but Blackman did brilliantly to palm away a Sa shot after he had turned Carl Magnay inside out.

Chelsea did get a goal back midway through the second half when Chalobah surged away from three tackles and floated a deep cross to the back post, where Lalkovic arrived to finish clinically on the half-volley. Moments later, Magnay inexplicably stabbed wide when left unattended at the far post but Fulham's reprieve was only temporary. Chalobah climbed highest to head home a Clifford corner and suddenly the game had turned on its head.

The Blues had a glorious chance to seal their comeback three minutes from time when Josh Pritchard was adjudged to have fouled Piazon in the box. But Lalkovic blazed the penalty over the bar – and the spoils were shared.

FULHAM RESERVES (4-5-1): Somogyi; Brister, Kavanagh (Banya 70), Burn, Pritchard; Minkwitz, B.H. Riise, Harris, Kacaniklic, Donegan (Dean 88); Sa. Subs (not used): Bettinelli, Bettache, Safo Tieku.

GOALS: Sa (12), Donegan (27).

CHELSEA RESERVES (4-3-3): Blackman; Kane, Ince, Magnay (Deen-Conteh 72), Gordon; Clifford, Chalobah, Saville; Lalkovic, Mitrovic, Piazon. Subs (not used): Taylor, Ake, Prosenik, Feruz.

GOALS: Lalkovic (66), Chalobah (70).

Hangeland confident of matching big boys
by DAN on NOVEMBER 29, 2011

Brede Hangeland believes Fulham can continue their recent improvement in December despite having to take on Liverpool, Manchester and Chelsea before the New Year.

The Norwegian centre back was encouraged by his side's strong showing at Arsenal on Saturday evening and feels Fulham have the quality to spring a few more surprises next month. He insists that adopting the right strategy will be vital:

It's a tough month coming up but this gives us lots of confidence to get a result like this that we can take points off any team. It's about getting the balance right. Especially at home. You can't go all gung-ho and leave too much space.

We are moving in the right direction. We had two games at home against Everton and Tottenham which we should have won. It's very tight but we just need to keep working on our performances we will get the results we deserve.

Jol: Zamora must score more goals
by DAN on NOVEMBER 29, 2011

Martin Jol has told Bobby Zamora that he must score more goals to earn a place in Fabio Capello's squad for Euro 2012.

The Fulham manager was impressed with the England international's work ethic and hold-up play during the 1-1 draw at Arsenal at the weekend but feels the 30 year-old should be scoring more goals to underline his quality. Zamora has failed to score in all of his last six league outings.

Bobby is brilliant as a number nine. He is a specific type of player, a target man who is one of our main strengths. Whether he goes with England to the European Championships depends on what you want.

As a striker, you have to score goals and I hope Bobby can be a bit more productive. We have to believe in ourselves and score goals at the right moments.

Kelly to return for Twente trip
by DAN on NOVEMBER 29, 2011

Stephen Kelly could make his return from a groin injury against FC Twente in Fulham's latest Europa League tie on Thursday night.

The Irish full-back has played since picking up his groin problem in the Republic's first-leg Euro 2012 play-off over Estonia earlier this month. But Martin Jol believes the 28 year-old, who was close to being involved in last weekend's draw at Arsenal, will be fit enough to make the trip to the Netherlands this week.

Victory over Twente, who currently top Group K, would ensure Fulham's place in the knockout stages of the competition. The tie is likely to come too early for Orlando Sa, who tore a hamstring during the defeat in Krakow earlier in the group phase, despite the Portuguese striker completing 90 minutes last night for the reserves against Chelsea. Sa scored and is likely to be back in contention for Monday's league meeting with Liverpool.

Jol is definitely without Steve Sidwell as the midfielder continues to recover from a hernia operation.

Richard Peniket has extended his loan at Hereford United by another month.

The Welsh under-19 international has yet to feature for the Bulls since joining on loan from Fulham a month ago but Hereford manager Jamie Pitman has been impressed with the striker's showing in training and moved to keep the youngster at Edgar Street.

Bristol City warn Fulham, Blackburn off Adomah

Bristol City chairman Colin Sextone insists star winger Albert Adomah is not for sale.

Adomah has been watched by the likes of Fulham, Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers this season.

But Sextone has warned off potential suitors, telling the Bristol Evening Post: "Albert is a Bristol City player and we want it to stay that way.

"We are building for the future under a new manager (Derek McInnes) and we are not in the business of letting our best players go.

"We are aware that players of Albert's quality are going to attract attention, but we have received no phone calls about him yet.

"He is a very talented player and one we intend keeping. He's enjoying his football here and we do not need to sell."

Fulham face Anzhi competition for Dynamo Moscow fullback Wilkshire

Fulham face competition for Dynamo Moscow fullback Luke Wilkshire.

Fulham and Blackburn Rovers are eyeing the former Middlesbrough prospect for the winter market.

However, Wilkshire is also a target for money-bags Anzhi and the Premier League duo will struggle to match the spending power of the Russians.

Bony shrugs off Fulham speculation

Wilfried Bony has shrugged off reports linking him with Fulham Football Club.

Martin Jol is eager to land a new striker when the window reopens, especially with uncertainty surrounding the future of Andrew Johnson.

The Cottagers boss has reportedly set his sights on £6million-rated Bony, but the Ivory Coast international insists he is focused only on current club Vitesse Arnhem.

"I know nothing," the 22-year-old told Omroep Gelderland. "There has previously been interest of all kinds from abroad but right now I'm just focusing on Vitesse."

Blackburn, Fulham encouraged in bid for Ajax striker Mounir El Hamdaoui

Blackburn Rovers and Fulham are being encouraged in their pursuit of Ajax striker Mounir El Hamdaoui.

Despite massive injury problems in attack, Ajax coach Frank de Boer refuses to consider the former Tottenham forward.

El Hamdaoui has had it made clear he's not in De Boer's plans, as former Ajax star Johnny Rep declared: "A fit El Hamdaoui is not an option. For him, he can just train to keep fit."

Blackburn and Fulham are eager to take El Hamdaoui off Ajax's hands in January.

FC Twente - Fulham Preview: Group K high-flyers clash as Martin Jol & Bryan Ruiz return to former club
Costa Rica star will be looking to recapture the form that saw the Cottagers fork out £10.6 million to secure his signature from their opponents on Thursday at De Grolsch Veste

PROBABLE LINEUPS
FC TWENTE
Mihaylov
Rosales, Wisgerhof, Douglas, Tiendalli
Brama, Fer, Landzaat
John, de Jong, Bajrami

FULHAM
Schwarzer
Kelly, Senderos, Hangeland, John Arne Riise
Ruiz, Murphy, Etuhu, Dempsey
Johnson, Zamora

Defender Stephen Kelly is fit and ready to return for Fulham, but midfielder Steve Sidwell will miss out after a hernia operation.

Andy Johnson's superb Europa League form could see him replace Moussa Dembele in attack. With Damien Duff and Simon Davies sidelined, Dembele, Bryan Ruiz and Clint Dempsey comprise Martin Jol's wide options.

Orlando Sa featured for the Cottagers' reserve side against Chelsea on Monday night as he nears full fitness after a hamstring injury, but the Portuguese striker is unlikely to start. Defender Zdenek Grygera is a long-term absentee.

Leroy Fer could continue in midfield as top scorer Marc Janko remains a doubt. If the Austrian striker is passed as fit to play, FC Twente boss Co Adriaanse could switch to a 4-2-3-1 with Janko leading the line and Fer dropping to the bench.

DID YOU KNOW?
Fulham could go top of Group K with a win in the Netherlands. They currently sit three points behind Thursday's hosts FC Twente, who also hold a three-goal advantage in the goal difference column.

The two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage, with Andrew Johnson opening the scoring before Luuk de Jong's header rebounded off Mark Schwarzer's back and over the line.

With only one goal to his name so far, Bryan Ruiz has not enjoyed an electrifying start to his Fulham career since signing from Twente for £10.6 million during the summer. He did not feature in the reverse fixture.

Twente are probably best known in England for one of their former managers. After being relieved of his duties with the England national team following the country's failure to qualify for Euro 2008, Steve McClaren (pictured right) enjoyed a successful two-year spell in Enschede.

After a second-place finish in the 2008-09 season, McClaren led the club to their first ever Eredivisie league title the following year.

Bulgarian goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov was signed by Liverpool from Levski Sofia in 2007. When he failed to obtain a work permit, however, he was sent out on loan and spent nearly three seasons with Twente before making his move permanent in February 2010.

Dutch midfielder Denny Landzaat had more of an impact in English football, making 52 league appearances for Wigan Athletic over two seasons after signing from AZ in 2006.

Fulham manager Martin Jol is a former Twente player himself. A midfielder, Jol appeared for the national team for the first time after joining the club in 1979. He spent three seasons with Twente after signing from Bayern Munich.

Jol has led Fulham to just two Premier League victories in 13 matches so far this season. In Europe they have fared much better, taking two wins and a draw from their four group stage matches so far.

Fulham's only Dutch player, young striker Danny Hoesen, is out on loan this season at Eerste Divisie outfit Fortuna Sittard. Injured full-back Zdenek Grygera spent time with Ajax, while forward Moussa Dembele established himself during five seasons with Willem II and AZ. Carlos Salcido, also sent out on loan, previously played for PSV Eindhoven.

Inside Track

The top two teams in Group K of the UEFA Europa League meet in Holland on Thursday evening when Martin Jol's Fulham team challenge FC Twente.

The Dutch side have already booked their place in the Round of 32 and one man who knows more that most about Thursday's opponents is Bryan Ruiz.

The Costa Rican international, who joined Fulham from Twente on transfer deadline day, is not eligible to play against his former side but he was able to offer an insight on what his team-mates will be up against at De Grolsch Veste.

"I think they will play very offensive because when Twente plays at home, they normally do that," Ruiz told fulhamfc.com. "They will try to press us and try to keep the ball, that's one of the qualities Twente has.

"I think we can win the game but we have to be really focused, defend well and also keep the ball when we have it. I think for sure we'll have chances so we have to convert the chances we create.

"We have to take care of Nacer Chadli, Luuk De Jong and Ola John and also Emir Bajrami – if those players play they are very good. Twente are not having the best season but they are doing well in the Europa League, they know that they are through – but they will like to finish well.

"The Fulham supporters will help, when we have the supporters behind us we get extra motivation so, for sure it will help the players."

Funny how Bryan did not feature in the reverse leg, as he dosen't qualify to play. He will have to work pretty damm hard to recapture his form as he isn't in the sqaud due to the same reason. Nice one goal.com  :015:

Ruiz on how to beat Twente
by DAN on NOVEMBER 30, 2011

Bryan Ruiz has given an interview to the offal on how Fulham can beat FC Twente tomorrow night and secure a place in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

The Costa Rican winger, who made only his second league start for the Whites at Arsenal on Saturday, is ineligible for Thursday's tie having played in European competition for Twente prior to joining Fulham at the end of August. He has, however, been able to pass on his knowledge of his former club to manager Martin Jol and his team-mates:

I think they will play very offensive because when Twente plays at home, they normally do that. They will try to press us and try to keep the ball, that's one of the qualities Twente has.

I think we can win the game but we have to be really focused, defend well and also keep the ball when we have it. I think for sure we'll have chances so we have to convert the chances we create.
