Jol counts cost of disappointing night against FC Twente

MARTIN Jol lamented the late goal his side conceded to lose in Holland in their penultimate Europa League group stage match - saying it was preventable.

The 1-0 defeat leaves the Whites still needing a win in their final match against Danes Odense on December 14 to guarantee a place in the knock-out stages.

"That's always disappointing because in the second-half we did well defensively from their crosses," said the Fulham manager. "Normally we're very good at defending crosses so that was harsh.

"We put on Kasami for Dembele, who had asked for a substitution, then you hope to keep the ball in their half – but we couldn't do that and they broke and scored.

"Duff has got a problem with his calf, he was out for two weeks then he came back but it's the same problem. Dembele hopefully is fine. Damien could be a problem for Monday [against Liverpool] but I expect Mousa to play."

Jol was also left to rue the late dismissal of Andrew Johnson, which rules out the striker for the Odense game.

"That was not what you want," Jol said. "We need all of our players and Andy Johnson is scoring goals."

Jol laments Fulham's injuries

Martin Jol, the Fulham manager, last night revealed Damien Duff is set to miss Monday night's Premier League game with Liverpool after he limped off during Fulham's Europa League defeat to FC Twente.

Fulham knew three points in the Netherlands would guarantee qualification for the last 32, but left empty-handed after substitute Marc Janko stabbed home from close range late on. Andy Johnson was sent off in stoppage time for a second booking, while injuries to Duff and Mousa Dembélé compounded a bad evening for the west Londoners.

"Duff has [suffered a recurrence] of the old problem with his calf injury that kept him out for two weeks," Jol said. "He came back and had the same problem, but hopefully Dembélé is fine. Damien could be a doubt but I expect Mousa to play and Clint [Dempsey] could return."

On his side's performance against one of his old clubs, Jol added: "It could have been a nice game. They have got a good team and they score goals. Last Sunday was the first time in a while they had not scored a goal [they drew 0-0 with Vitesse Arnhem] so it would have been only the second time in about 42 games they hadn't scored.

"That would have been good, although one point would not have been ideal. We need to win the last game, anyway, but the goal was disappointing."

The defeat, coupled with Wisla Krakow's win at Odense, means Fulham must beat the latter in two weeks to be sure of qualification. Johnson's red card will see him miss that game and Jol admitted the striker's absence is far from ideal.

"It was probably not what you want, a player sent off in the final minutes out of frustration," he said. "It was a second booking, and he knew that he was booked."

FC Twente (4-3-3): Mihailov; Rosales, Wisgerhof, Douglas, Tiendalli; Brama, Fer (John, h-t), Landzaat; Bajrami, De Jong, Chadli (Janko, 79). Substitutes not used Marsman (gk), Cornelisse, Bengtsson, Buysse, Gouriye.

Fulham (4-4-2): Schwarzer; Kelly, Hughes, Hangeland, Riise; Dembélé (Kasami, 83), Murphy, Etuhu, Duff (Frei, 34); Johnson, Zamora (Orlando Sa, 87). Substitutes not used Etheridge (gk), Senderos, Gecov, Briggs.

Referee M Strahonja (Croatia).

Fulham winger Duff doubtful for Liverpool clash after injury blow

Martin Jol revealed Damien Duff is set to miss Monday night's Premier League clash with Liverpool after he limped off during Fulham's 1-0 Europa League Group K defeat to FC Twente.

The Cottagers knew three points in Holland would guarantee qualification for the last 32, but left empty-handed after substitute Marc Janko stabbed home from close range late on.

Injury blow: Damien Duff

Andrew Johnson was sent off in stoppage time for a second booking, while injuries to Duff and Mousa Dembele compounded a bad evening for the west Londoners.

Clint Dempsey missed the trip to Holland with a thigh complaint but could return for Monday's clash, although Jol revealed Duff might not be able to line up alongside the American against the Reds.

'Duff has (suffered a recurrence) of the old problem with his calf injury that kept him out for two weeks,' the Dutchman said.

'He came back and had the same problem, but hopefully Dembele is fine. Damien could be a doubt but I expect Mousa to play and Clint could return.'

On his side's performance against one of his old clubs, Jol added: 'It could have been a nice game. They have got a good team and they score goals.

'Last Sunday was the first time in a while they had not scored a goal (they drew 0-0 with Vitesse Arnhem) so it would have been only the second time in about 42 games they hadn't scored.

'That would have been good, although one point would not have been ideal.

Red mist: Andrew Johnson is sent off

'We need to win the last game, anyway, but the goal was disappointing.

'We did well defensively, stopping their crosses, but somebody slipped and then we speculated on the offside.

'We are normally very good at defending crosses and the problem was keeping the ball in their half. Dembele had asked for a substitution and we couldn't keep the ball in their half so they broke us and they scored.'

The defeat, coupled with Wisla Krakow's win at Odense, means Fulham must beat the latter in two weeks to be sure of qualification.

Johnson's red card will see him miss that game and Jol admitted the striker's absence is far from ideal.

'It was probably not what you want, a player sent off in the final minutes out of frustration,' he said. 'It was a second booking, and he knew that he was booked.

'You need all your players, especially Andy Johnson, who has scored goals in Europe.

'He did a very good job for the team. There is no complaint whatsoever with his attitude.'

The victory was Twente's first against English opposition in 13 European games and manager Co Adriaanse was proud of his team's effort.

'It was a difficult match because Fulham got back to their own game in the second half,' he said.

'Twente had to be patient and maintain the tempo, but we didn't make the mistake of playing long balls and deserved the win with the late goal.'

Late goal and red card dash Fulham hopes of easy route

FOOTBALL
FRANK DALLERES
FC TWENTE 1 vs FULHAM 0

FULHAM manager Martin Jol refused to blame striker Andy Johnson after his stoppage-time red card completed a miserable Europa League night in Holland for the Cottagers.

An 89th-minute winner from Marc Janko condemned the west Londoners to a defeat that leaves them needing to win their final group fixture against Odense to guarantee a last 32 place.

To compound the gloom, Fulham lost winger Damien Duff and Mousa Dembele to injury, before Johnson earned a second yellow card for kicking the ball away, meaning he will miss the showdown against the Danes in a fortnight.

"It was probably not what you want, a player sent off in the final minutes out of frustration. It was a second booking, and he knew that he was booked. You need all your players, especially Andy Johnson, who has scored goals in Europe," admitted Jol, but he added: "He did a very good job for the team. There is no complaint whatsoever with his attitude."

Jol, already deprived of several midfielders and attacking players due to injury, revealed Duff had suffered a recurrence of a calf complaint and is likely to miss Monday's Premier League visit of Liverpool. Dembele is, however, expected to recover to face the Reds, the Dutchman added.

Dembele's injury contributed to Twente's late winner, which came when the dangerous Emir Bajrami crossed from the right for towering Austria forward Janko to tap his 17th goal of the season past Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

Fulham arrived knowing that three points would send them through, but offered little threat until after the break, when Johnson squandered a chance to give them an undeserved lead. Bobby Zamora's challenge for a loose ball caused a ricochet to fall kindly to Johnson, only for him to screw it several yards wide.

By then Twente were looking ominous, Bajrami flashing a dipping effort close to Scwharzer's post and then Luuk de Jong nodding Ola John's left-wing cross wide from an inviting position.

Still Zamora could have pilfered victory for the visitors, had he diverted Danny Murphy's free-kick on target, but Janko would have the final word before Johnson invited suspension.

MATCH ANALYSIS

BY FRANK DALLERES

KEY MOMENT

Andy Johnson was presented with a gleaming opportunity to put Fulham in front after 65 minutes, when the ball broke to him eight yards out at a slight angle, but the former England striker could not adjust his feet quickly enough and dragged his shot well wide. It only got worse for Johnson, who was sent off in stoppage time.

DUGOUT VIEW

It was a difficult match because Fulham got back to their own game in the second half. Twente had to be patient and maintain the tempo, but we didn't make the mistake of playing long balls and deserved the win with the late goal.

FC Twente boss Co Adriaanse on his team's first win over English opposition in 13 attempts

TALKING POINT

While most teams have played around 20 games this season, last night was the 27th of an already gruelling campaign for Fulham. With one of the oldest squads in the top flight, Martin Jol's enthusiasm for a prolonged European adventure must be increasingly tempered by concerns that a repeat of the 2009-10 run to the final could burn them out long before their rivals. And while they remain only three points above the relegation zone, they cannot afford to let their performance dip.

Rumour Mill: WBA and Fulham Watching Adomah

West Brom and Fulham are both supposed to be keeping tabs on Albert Adomah according to newspaper reports.

Both Premier League sides are expected to make an offer during the January transfer window, but they are just two who are interested.

The 23 year old, who has hit five goals for City this term, is also being watched by the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic.

Martin Jol frustrated by Andy Johnson red card

Martin Jol admits Fulham's vital Europa League clash with Odense has been made harder by Andrew Johnson's absence.

The Cottagers suffered a last-gasp 1-0 defeat to FC Twente last night as they wasted the chance to make the knockout stage.

Fulham knew three points in Holland would guarantee qualification from Group K, but they ultimately claimed none as Austrian substitute Marc Janko stabbed home from close range.

Johnson's red card in stoppage time compounded matters and means he will miss the all-important final group match with Odense.

"It was probably not what you want, a player sent off in the final minutes out of frustration," Jol said.

"It was a second booking, and he knew that he was booked. You need all your players, especially Andy Johnson, who has scored goals in Europe. He did a very good job for the team. There is no complaint whatsoever with his attitude."

Jol's side struggled against the club he played for between 1979 and 1982, failing to muster a single shot in a first half that Twente dominated.

Fulham improved in the second period but wasted the chance of a point late on, much to Jol's frustration.

"It could have been a nice game," he said. "They've got a good team and they score goals.

Lawro's prediction

Fulham v Liverpool (2000 GMT)
I remember this fixture from the end of last season when Luis Suarez absolutely annihilated Fulham defenders Brede Hangeland and Aaron Hughes. He completely took them apart and Liverpool were 3-0 up within the first 20 minutes.

Losing Lucas Leiva for the season is a big blow for Liverpool but Reds boss Kenny Dalglish has got competition for places and strength in depth too.

We saw that in the win over Chelsea in the Carling Cup on Tuesday and I think Suarez's form means the whole club is on a high at the moment. Andy Carroll has not been convincing but Craig Bellamy and Suarez have hit it off, and so has Maxi Rodriguez.

They are busy and quick players who can play one-touch football and that has made a big difference to Liverpool.

Having said all that, Fulham are at home and they can be a bit of a handful themselves, and their strikers will cause Liverpool a few problems too.

If I lived in London and could have a season ticket to any team, I would go and watch Fulham. Everything about Craven Cottage is really good - there is no pressure on them to win, and the atmosphere is great because it is a proper old ground in a nice area where you can get a beer.

They are a club who knows what they are and where they are - and I can see them getting a point on Monday night.

Prediction: 1-1

FC Twente 1 -0 Fulham

We bought Bryan Ruiz from FC Twente for 10 million, or whatever it was. There's an element of food-chaining here, isn't there? We bought their best player; they didn't buy ours. Which ought to imply that we're a better team, particularly as Ruiz – promising though he may be – is not yet in Fulham's best XI.

I appreciate that this is not how the world works, but clearly something doesn't quite add up. In the pre-match talks Schteve Maclaren talked about Twente's midfield three being up against Etuhu and Murphy in the Fulham midfield as a point of interest, and this immediately set the alarm bells ringing: games are frequently won and lost in the engine room, and if Twente are devoting three players to that element and we only have two, it could lead to a lot of possession for them.

Which it did, to the point where Fulham almost appeared stumped. No – not one – shots on target all game, and only 2-3 shots at all in the entire match. We couldn't get any forward momentum going and seemed somewhat otherworldly in our approach. Zamora and Johnson – neither well suppported nor supporting one another – played like men serving out their notice period, which they may very well be if the rumours are correct.

The game's high points from Fulham came from Danny Murphy passes: the first slid AJ through deliciously, but the 'keeper was alert and smothered the ball in the nick of time. The second, from a free-kick on the right flank, saw Zamora circle back around the Twente marking corps, then stab Murphy's clever pass wide with the outside of his boot. It trickled just past the post.

But of course Twente were putting together chances, too, notably a freeish header that dropped just the right side of the post when scoring might have been simpler. They got a winner late on when a tidy (and quickly played) right-wing cross found its way into the six yard box. Kelly was caught the wrong side of his man and the finish was simple. A deserved win for the hosts.

Hard to know what to make of all this. We haven't scored a goal in several hours now – own goals not counted – and the expression on Martin Jol's face seems to be saying "crikey, we should be better than this. Why aren't we better than this?"..... If he is going to impose his ideas on the team fully, and make wholesale changes he needs to be bold in doing so. There is a feeling of compromise about the team at the moment, that we are playing a certain way that doesn't quite fit anyone's preference, using players that are too good to ignore but who don't really display the traits the manager would like to be working with.

Or not. Football is about long seasons and fatigue is likely to already be a problem. Form comes, form goes, and we all read too much into things. The problem with continually changing the manager is that we cannot necessarily differentiate between a temporary bad run and a wholly bad situation.

Fulham hit by Duff injury

Fulham suffered a last-gasp defeat to FC Twente as they wasted the chance to make the knockout stage last night.

The Cottagers knew three points in Holland would guarantee qualification from Group K, but they ultimately claimed none as Austrian substitute Marc Janko stabbed home from close range.

Martin Jol's side struggled against the club he played for between 1979 and 1982, failing to muster a shot in a first half that Twente dominated.

Fulham's poor first period was compounded by an injury to Damien Duff in the 34th minute, although the west Londoners looked a more cohesive attacking unit after the restart.

Fulham pushed forward in numbers as rain began to pour down in a final 10 minutes that saw Moussa Dembele also limp off.

Things got worse for the visitors when neat play from Twente saw Janko turn home Roberto Rosales' cross. The goal two minutes from time was compounded further by Andrew Johnson's sending-off in stoppage-time, meaning he will miss the all-important final group match with Odense, which Fulham need to win.

Europa League: Fulham defiant after defeat to FC Twente

FC Twente 1 Fulham: Fulham's Mousa Dembele believes the Cottagers can overcome the disappointment of last night's Europa League defeat and qualify for the last 32 of the competition.

Marc Janko stabbed home an 89th-minute goal to give FC Twente a 1-0 win which ensures they will finish top of Group K.

However, Fulham will join them in the knockout stages if they win their final group match at home to Odense on December 14.

Dembele said: "Everybody will work hard enough to win the final game. It's very important to us and I think we'll win it."

On tonight's setback, the 24-year-old Belgian added: "We tried to play our way and we would have been happy to take a point, but Twente had most of the game so maybe they deserved to win.

"What happened at the end is a bit disappointing for us, but we're not playing badly as a team."

Keeper concerns for Town

Ipswich could once again be without goalkeepers David Stockdale and Richard Wright when Watford visit Portman Road.

Arran Lee-Barrett became the third Town goalkeeper to start in as many games when they were thrashed 4-0 by Burnley on Tuesday, and he will play again should Stockdale and Wright miss out.

The duo are both struggling with shoulder injuries. Stockdale, on loan from Fulham, is considered the most likely to return having missed the Tractor Boys' last two games.

Ipswich's defence could be boosted by the return of centre-back Ibrahima Sonko.

In his absence, Jewell's side have conceded 13 goals in their last four outings but he has trained all week after tearing his hamstring.

Captain Grant Leadbitter (groin) is still sidelined.

Fulham (A): Match Preview

Liverpool's reward for their 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Tuesday night is a two-legged semi-final against Manchester City in January, with the winners set to face either Crystal Palace or Cardiff at Wembley. Before then we have seven league games (freezing wintery weather permitting) to keep us occupied with the first of these fixtures at Craven Cottage against Martin Jol's Fulham on Monday night.

Our last trip to the Cottage saw us produce a fantastic display of attacking football as we ran out 5-2 winners and more of the same would do very nicely. The loss of Lucas to a serious knee injury is a big blow to Liverpool and has resulted in the recall of Jonjo Shelvey from his loan spell at Blackpool.

It will be interesting to see who Dalglish and Clarke decide to partner with Adam in centre midfield. The continued absence of Steven Gerrard means it is likely to be one of Jordan Henderson, Jay Spearing or the returnee Shelvey. None of the players mentioned can match Lucas in terms of what he brings to the team (although Spearing is probably the most similar in-terms of style, if not of the same quality) so it may mean a change in tactics or formation to find the right balance until the Brazilian returns.

Fulham v Liverpool: Pre-match stats

Liverpool have been enjoying their trips to London with this season, securing three wins out of four in the capital. The exception being the clash against Harry Redknapp's Tottenham, a game where the Reds had two men sent off.

In the last fortnight Kenny Dalglish's team have twice despatched Chelsea with controlled ease, sending out a stark reminder of what they are capable of doing to their Barclays Premier League rivals.

Liverpool's second team showed just how good they were when they beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last Tuesday. Jay Spearing was inspiring and Sebastian Coates alongside Jamie Carragher was a giant at the back.

Craig Bellamy was a constant menace and Martin Kelly and Maxi Rodriguez not only scored, but produced assured displays. In a sense of déjà vu, Maxi and Liverpool's right back scored the goals against Chelsea in the last two clashes.

Back to Fulham and ahead of Monday's clash at Craven Cottage. GMF has skimmed Opta and some archive material, and made note of some interesting titbits:

- Since Liverpool beat Fulham 2-5 at Craven Cottage last May Martin Jol's men have won just one home game.

- The Lilywhites have not scored in their last 8 clashes with Liverpool.

- Liverpool have allowed their opponents fewer shots (44) on target against them than any other team.

- Fulham have scored the least amount of headed goals in the Barclays Premier League. (7%).

- The Reds have three league away wins. A win on Monday night will match the four in a row record achieved in May 2009.

- With 12 points, this season's points tally so far is the joint worst record the Cottagers have collected in the top flight after 13 games. ( 2005/06 and 2007/08).

- On the same note Andy Carroll has had the most headers on goal than any other top league player (18) and also achieved the highest number of headers on target (eight).

- Carroll's strike partner Luis Suarez has achieved more touches in the opposing penalty area per than any other Premier League player (8.2).

- The Reds have won more corners than any other team in the Barclays Premier League. (104).

- In 1986, 13,498 fans watched Liverpool smash Fulham 10-0 in a second round League Cup tie. Midfield enforcer Steve McMahon scored four, Ian Rush and John Wark netted two, with one each from Stevie Nicol, and Ronnie Whelan. McMahon also missed a penalty.

Ruiz Targets Reds

Fulham's star summer signing, Bryan Ruiz, received a stunning reception before Thursday night's UEFA Europa League match between FC Twente and Fulham in Holland.

Ruiz spent just two seasons at FC Twente and received a hero's welcome on his return and the Costa Rican was clearly moved by the experience before turning his attention to playing an integral role for Fulham against Liverpool on Monday night.

"FC Twente invited me over a couple of weeks ago and it was very nice for me," Ruiz told fulhamfc.com. "It was an emotional occasion being able to say goodbye to the supporters on the pitch.

"I didn't get to say goodbye before my move so to be given the chance to do that was good and it was a great reception. I'm very thankful for that. I have good memories of my time at FC Twente.

"During my two years here Twente won the championship for the first ever time so I think they recognise the job I did.

"I'm fully fit now and it was really nice to play against Arsenal last weekend. I felt really good and we got a good result at the Emirates which is the most important thing.

"It's going to be a tough game against Liverpool on Monday night but we're at home and we have to try and win against every team no matter who they are.

"I've not been frustrated this season but of course I would have liked a better start. I'm feeling really good now and strong and I hope to help the Team now.

"We've got a lot of good quality players that can create chances and score goals so I'm sure we'll do much better and improve. I'll be doing my best to do that."
