FA Youth Cup: Fulham 3-1 Carlisle

Fulham's FA Youth Cup campaign opened in positive fashion on Tuesday night with a Ronny Minkwitz double and Omri Altman penalty capping an entertaining, yet hard-fought victory over Carlisle United.

The Whites entered the game having lost four of their last five fixtures, and having warned his side of complacency ahead of kick-off, Under-18 Manager Kit Symons will have been left delighted by his players' response.

In charge of an undoubtedly talented group, Symons holds high hopes for the competition and will be looking to better last season and go beyond the Fifth Round.

Opponents Carlisle certainly impressed en route to this encounter, bettering their 2010/11 run, in which they reached the Second Round, by knocking out both Sheffield Wednesday and Kidderminster Harriers.

With both teams starting brightly it was the home side that registered the first real chance of the night when Charles Banya and Omri Altman combined to find Cauley Woodrow on the edge of the box with the striker drawing a fine low save from Jordan Parker.

A similarly impressive stop came at the other end moments later, with Grant Smith doing well to tip Lance McGlan's strike from the angle to safety, while David Symington struck the foot of the post as Carlisle pushed Fulham back.

The Whites responded in typically positive fashion though, with Woodrow heading over from Lyle Della Verde's teasing delivery and Mahrez Bettache firing a decent opportunity wide.

Della Verde then played a lovely pass into Altman's stride, but with the goal in sight the Israeli forward drew another fine stop from Parker.

However Fulham went in front from the resulting corner, with Della Verde floating a deep delivery on to the head of Ronny Minkwitz, who powered home in convincing fashion on 24 minutes.

Five minutes later Fulham had a second after Brad Staunch tripped Altman in the box; Fulham's talented number 10 stepped up and despatched a cool finish to send Parker in the opposite direction.

Despite the home side's two-goal advantage Carlisle continued to press, and their endeavour was rewarded on the stroke of half-time when Dale Minor's shot from the left found its way beyond Smith and into the Fulham net.

Fulham opened the second-half on the front foot with Altman firing wide and Della Verde forcing Parker into a brave low stop.

But again the visitors hit back with Mark Beek forcing Smith into action, while Symington was denied a clear strike at goal by a brilliant last-ditch tackle by Josh Passley.

As the game swung in favour of both teams Symington had a good chance to draw level, while Bettache and Altman both had close-range chances bravely blocked.

With 15 minutes left the game remained finely balanced as Fulham looked for the relative safety of a third, while Carlisle looked towards an all important leveller.

And that goal almost fell to the visitors when Beek rose above Daniel O'Reilly, only to see his downward header superbly held by a grateful Smith.

At the other end the impressive Parker made an incredible double save to keep out Muamer Tankovic and then Banya as the game flowed back in Fulham's favour.

In using that momentum, Fulham grabbed that third goal, with Minkwitz lashing home with five minutes remaining following a clever move involving Tankovic and Banya.

Fulham Under-18s: Smith; Brister, Passley, O'Reilly, Kavanagh (Richards 88); Minkwitz, Bettache, Della Verde (Tankovic 75), Banya; Altman, Woodrow (Tieku 85).

Carlisle United-U18s: Parker; McGlan, Staunch, Morse, Minor; Todd, Symington, Lynce (Gwinnott 68), Brough (Clarey 70); Potts (Jones 90), Beek.

I know that some of the players don't like me, admits Fulham boss Jol

Fulham players can sulk all they like, but Martin Jol is not about to change his hardline approach any time soon.

The Fulham boss came out fighting on Tuesday, defending the style of management that has done little to endear him to the club's senior players - and certainly not to Bobby Zamora, who was unhappy to be dropped for Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Swansea.

Dutch courage: Fulham chief Jol came out fighting on Tuesday

Jol said 80 per cent of his players need winding up to perform at their best and insisted he did not care if this makes him unpopular with his squad.

He said: 'It's not provocation. For me it's inspiration and trying to stimulate them. They always realise that I always try to get the best out of them. It will never be personal.

Bobby's back on the beat: Zamora trained on Tuesday

'Even when I don't like them I wouldn't tell them. I would probably be a good actor and do as if I like them because that is my job to be professional.

'I'm sure there will be one or two in the starting XI who don't like me, but it's about doing the business for the club. You can't keep all of them happy all of the time.'

The Dutchman's relationship with Zamora has been frosty since the striker was told by text message he would not be travelling to Odense for Fulham's 2-0 Europa League victory in September.

Jol also admitted he has quarrelled with Andrew Johnson, whose contract runs out next summer, and captain Danny Murphy, who was fined for walking straight down the tunnel after being substituted at West Bromwich in September.

'In any team you have to get the pressure to perform,' said Jol. 'I had the same with Johnson and I had the same with Murphy. With 80 per cent of the players, we have to try to create a sort of atmosphere to get the best out of them.

'It was the same with Bobby a couple of months ago. I thought to rest him and I left him out and he was moaning he was not going with us to Denmark.

'I thought I did a good thing to rest him, but players always have different opinions. For me, the main thing is that we get the best out of them and they give 100 per cent.'

The focus on his relationship with Zamora is something that irks Jol, who referred repeatedly to the 'profile' the England striker enjoys at Fulham.

Asked whether he liked the 30-year-old, the Dutchman answered with a heavy dose of sarcasm. 'I love him,' he replied, with a wink. But Jol insisted Zamora will still be a Fulham player after the January transfer window closes.

The striker has been included in the squad to face Odense tonight, more out of necessity than choice.

Fulham must win to guarantee their place in the last 32 of the Europa League without Johnson, who is suspended following a red card against FC Twente last month, and Bryan Ruiz, who is ineligible. But Jol believes his approach will help Zamora to perform at his best and secure him a place in England's squad for Euro 2012.

He said: 'I hope I can get the best out of Bobby. There are players who want to play in every game, but I make the decisions. I feel we are on a good track and over the last two months he has been fitter than ever.'

PROBABLE TEAM
Fulham (4-4-1-1): Schwarzer; Kelly, Hughes, Hangeland, Briggs; Duff, Baird, Gecov, Frei; Dempsey; Zamora

Fulham manager Martin Jol plays down rift with Bobby Zamora ahead of Odense clash
Fulham manager Martin Jol has insisted that his relationship with Bobby Zamora had not broken down as uncertainty over his future continues to mount.

Rift: Martin Jol has played down talk of a rift with striker Bobby Zamora

The England international was left out of the Fulham squad for Saturday's match at Swansea, with reports suggesting he had rowed with Jol at the club's training ground.

The 30 year-old will return to the first team squad for their crucial Europa League encounter against Odense but it is still widely believed he could leave Craven Cottage when the transfer window reopens in January, with Sunderland and Queen's Park Rangers both touted as possible suitors.

Jol, who clashed with Zamora at the start of this season and also when he was in charge of him at Tottenham, did his best to downplay those suggestions yesterday, although he did concede there were members of his squad who wanted to move on.

"I said to him a few weeks ago: 'Do you love this club?'" Jol said. "He said: 'Yeah, I love this club, I love this team.' "I don't think there is any problem. I think the grass is always greener on the other side but it is not only for him. There are always players in a squad of 24 or 25 players that look at other clubs, but this is a great club."

Asked again whether there was a rift with Zamora, he retorted: "They (the media) said we had a 'bust-up' at the start of the season, but you always have a little bit of a disagreement.

"If you want them to go into space and they want to come to the ball or, for example, Pajtim Kasami has to play on the right and wants to play number 10. I have got a lot of players who have to play in a different ways, like the youngster Kerim Frei. The main thing is the team, the club."

Zamora's return to the squad tonight, for a game Fulham to win to ensure progression to the knockout phase, would likely see him replace Johnson in attack.

The former Everton striker misses the Group K finale through suspension and will be joined on the sidelines by Bryan Ruiz, Danny Murphy and Steve Sidwell.

Fulham are boosted by the return of Damien Duff and Chris Baird, although goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer faces a fitness test.

"He has a problem with his spine because he had that fall at Swansea but we make a decision today," Jol said. "The specialist is coming this afternoon to make a decision, but I think he has a great chance to play.

"Sidwell is not available, it is longer than I thought. Danny Murphy has a problem with his ankle and Damien Duff is back. I will play different players because I think I need to, but we still have a strong team.

"I realise we need to win this game because of the Wisla Krakow away game where we lost 1-0. It made it difficult for ourselves and we have to win tomorrow. It is a must-win game.

"I know Twente will play almost a reserve side [in the group's other match] so I think Wisla have a great chance to win that game so we have to do everything tomorrow to win."

Follow that Star

No sign yet of a bright star in the East illuminating the wintry sky over Craven Cottage, and you can't rent a donkey for love or money. They all seem to have been snapped up by QPR. But are we about to see the second coming of Bobby Z..?

© Getty Images

Forget the three kings. It's three games in eight days that matter, all at the Cottage, each encounter with a unique script of its own. We start on Wednesday with one final hurdle keeping us from the lucrative and exciting knock-out rounds of the Europa League.
Denmark's Odense round off a programme that began with the players running out at the Cottage last June against Runavik of the Faroe Islands. Revisiting my blog archive, it all seems so long ago. How did I follow the game that night? Believe it or not, I was hitting the free bar for all I was worth at a hospitality bash down on the field of the Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington, Texas. Tomorrow I'll be shivering at the Hammy End wrapped in gloves, scarf and wooly hat nipping from my hip flask (which technically I have to smuggle in). A journalist's life is anything but predictable...

A bit like following Fulham. How to prioritise the coming schedule? We need to beat the bottom side in the group to make sense of the ridiculous trek to date around the fringes of the Europa League. Had we shown more urgency in Holland on December 1st or in Poland last October we could have relaxed for this game six and given the first team squad a night off. But as a result is imperative to progress, nobody's getting a free ride this week.

If Zamora is back leading the line, as Jol suggested he would be at his press conference, it begs the question where our manager lays his own priorities at present. Two years ago Hodgson was unflinching - survival in the Premiership was paramount. League points were all that mattered to Roy that autumn, his teams for Europa nights were littered with fringe players. Only from the round of 32 on did he look to play stronger teams as far as possible.

Because of the club clampdown on players giving statements to the press, all current information emanating from the boss is naturally a one-way street. Whatever the reality behind the scenes, I can't help thinking Jol's handling of the issues have been poor. He's spent this week defusing all rumours of a bust up between himself and Zamora. No sooner is the ink dry on the hacks morning story of QPR, Sunderland and Villa all preparing January moves for our star striker, Jol states Bobby's going nowhere and says he loves the club! Cue rapid re-write for tonight's presses.

Let's all take a deep breath, cease contributing to ridiculous 'fan polls' as to who should stay and who should go, and assume the truth lies somewhere in between. Words have been exchanged, as Jol admits, at the start of the season. Though I find his quote that 'this kind of disagreement is normal with a new manager,' somewhat bizarre. Certainly can't imagine Hodgson or Hughes ever releasing a statement like that about internal matters, even were it to be true.

To my mind Jol has painted himself into a corner with the fans, and possibly the players too. And it can't be blamed on his poor command of English or appreciation of the English game. Here's where I find fault with Jol's stance over the past few days. If Zamora was being rested - and possibly nursing an injury niggle - why not say it. The manner in which Jol set out to humiliate our striker was deeply unfortunate. Telling the fans Andy Johnson 'deserved' a start based on recent form (and this for an away game too) defied logic, severely damaged our chances at Swansea, and looked to make fools of the fans.

This was compounded by saying, 'Zamora is not the best player to have on the subs bench.' Really??? It was fine for Sparky last Spring, and can you be serious in saying that about an international striker six feet tall among a side that is criminally goal-shy and a tad on the short side up front! Motivation is a monumental part of a manager's armoury. It does not constitute shouting at players, nor seeking to belittle them.

Just taking this blog as a straw poll, inadequately unscientific I know, nine out of ten posters seem to see the problem here to be Martin Jol rather than any players. I've said this before, I invariably run the rule over other credible FFC sites for comment and feedback before dipping my pen in the vitriol. It seemed to me the negative approach Saturday (yet again) was the final straw for a fair number of Fulham folk. The bottom line is Jol - for whatever personal reasons - failed to follow Roy's dictum that Premiership points are paramount for a club with our resources.

It's too early in the season to say Swansea away was a must win. It was however a very winnable game for a side that rarely ever wins away. Compounding this error of judgement was the fact that Jol surely had to realise, with no AJ or Ruiz to call upon for Odense, having so publicly snubbed Zamora last week and left him behind, he'd be needing to wrap his arm around him Wednesday evening and with a cheeky squeeze of the cheek ask Bob to go out there and make sure Fulham made into the next phase of the Europa League.

Now examine the scenario for Zamo Wednesday night. Unlike Clint, who seems capable of all but shutting down his life support systems pre-match (rf recent stories of cartoons with the kids, never visualising a game to heap extra pressure on himself etc), Bobby seems a more complex character. I don't envy him his options for the Odense game. Should he put in a big shift but fail to score he'll come off boiling with frustration feeling he's let the side down. If he has a really off night the bulk of the crowd will write him off as wanting away and no longer bothered being in Fulham white. Should he play his part in a rousing win does he celebrate with the team, stare out the boss, or feel he's got to go out against Bolton and prove himself all over again?

Ah, yes. The really big game of the three. Rock bottom Bolton. No Danny or Steve for the Europa game. That shouldn't be critical, especially with Duff and Baird fit again (Danny will be fit for Bolton). Odense have looked lightweight at this level and are playing just for pride. I'm intrigued to see how Fulham approach this game, because in the final analysis what really does matter are the six points up for grabs against the Trotters and Man United. A home loss Saturday and Martin will certainly find out what pressure is all about. Even before Sir Alex pitches up.

Let's deal with the Danes first, so COYW! Twitter@fulhamphil

Jol hints at an exit for restless Zamora
Fulham manager defends decision to leave out striker and says it is not his job to keep him happy

Martin Jol has little sympathy for frustrated striker Bobby Zamora. The target man was left out of the Fulham squad for the game at Swansea on Saturday. While Zamora is likely to start in the Europa League against Odense at Craven Cottage tonight, a game they must win to be certain of reaching the next round, Jol insisted yesterday that the England international got enough matches, and that it was not his job to prioritise the happiness of individual players.

Comparing Zamora's position to that of youngsters trying to break through – "it's totally different" – Jol said that rotation of first-team players was necessary to keep the team fresh. "In a good atmosphere, a good team, they push each other," Jol explained. "So I thought last week it would be a time for [Andrew] Johnson to play again, because he scores goals. And he had good games and he worked hard in training. So that was my motivation."

As Zamora has started 20 games already so far this season, Jol does not believe he has a legitimate grievance regarding selection. "Bobby plays almost 90 per cent of all the games," he said. "So I think that helps him get a good profile."

Despite Zamora's frustration at missing games, Jol argued that being rested was for his own good, even if the striker did not see it that way. "I had the same a couple of months ago," he said. "I thought to rest him and I left him out, and he was moaning that he was not going with us, I think it was Runavik or something. [Zamora played in Runavik but did not travel to either Odense or Wisla Krakow]. So I thought that I did a good thing, for him to rest. So players have different opinions on that. You always get that."

Jol suggested that Zamora's disappointment may lead to his seeing a happier future for himself at a different club. "I said a couple of weeks ago, 'Do you love this club?'," he reported. "He said 'Yes, I love the club. I love the team.' So I don't think there's any problem. I think the grass is always greener, but it's not only for him. There's always, in a squad of 24, 25, you've got players probably who look at other clubs." When asked twice asked whether there had been enquiries for Zamora from other clubs, Jol merely replied: "I don't want to talk about one player all the time, because there's other players and you never ask me about other players."

Beyond the simple issue of selection, Jol suggested that he would like Zamora – when on the pitch – to play differently. "You've always got a little bit of disagreement," he said. "If you wanted them to go into space, they wanted to come to the ball. [Pajtim] Kasami has to play on the right, he wants to play No 10. I've got a lot of players who probably play in a different way." He made it clear, though, that he expects players to meet what is asked of them. "The main thing is the team, it's the club. It's not a provocation, it's an inspiration, trying to stimulate them."

Ultimately, Jol does not see ensuring the happiness of his entire squad as the most important part of his job description. "I make the decisions," Jol said. "[Marcel] Gecov is a young player, I think he needs time, he will be better. He would like to play all the games, he's played two games. So he won't be happy. I have to make the owner happy, I have to make the fans happy, and me, sometimes."

Bryan Ruiz is suspended tonight, while Danny Murphy and Steve Sidwell are both injured. Mark Schwarzer is a doubt with a back problem.

FULHAM BOSS MARTIN JOL: I GET BEST OUT OF INCREDIBLE SULKS

MARTIN JOL claims he has a club full of unhappy players like sulking striker Bobby Zamora.

But the Fulham boss insists that's just the way he likes it – because it gets the best out of them!

Zamora will start against Odense in the Europa League tonight after not even making the squad which lost at Swansea on Saturday.

Jol admitted it is not just the England striker who gives him problems. He said: "I'm sure there will be one or two in the starting XI, who don't like me. You can't keep all of them happy all of the time.

"We have to try to create a sort of atmosphere to get the best out of them. In a good atmosphere, they push each other.

"You've always got a bit of disagreement. It's not provocation. For me it's inspiration and trying to stimulate them.

"Are my players happy to talk to me? Most of them. If not, what can I do about it? Even when I don't like them, I wouldn't tell them! I would probably be a good actor and do as if I liked them.

"Some players are nice to you and you have a good relationship. But nothing is as it seems. Some players are probably sulking.

"Has Bobby sulked? It was the same a couple of months ago. I thought to rest him.

"I left him out and he was moaning he was not going with us. I had the same with Andy Johnson and I had the same with Danny Murphy – 80 per cent of the players."

Jol left Zamora out of his squad for the trips to both Odense and Wisla Krakow. And Murphy was fi ned for reacting badly to being substituted at West Brom while Johnson is in the middle of a contract wrangle.

But Zamora's future is in the biggest doubt with QPR, Aston Villa and Sunderland all looking at him in the January transfer window. Jol claims he will stay.

But when asked if he liked the player, Jol winked, and in a comment laced with sarcasm said: "I love him. "Bobby has a big profile here. I think he's fine here.  There's not one player who has told me he doesn't want to play for this club."

Zamora will start tonight because Johnson, Fulham's top scorer in Europe, is suspended. They must win to be sure of making the last 32.

Jol looking for Zamora reponse

FULHAM boss Martin Jol reckons he is getting the best out of star striker Bobby Zamora.

The England frontman was left out of the squad for Saturday's defeat at Swansea, but is set to lead the line in tonight's Europa League showdown with Odense.

Zamora has managed just three league goals this season, and been linked with a £10million move away from Craven Cottage after a reported fall-out with his manager.

But Jol insists he has no problem with the 30-year-old, and says he hopes Zamora will respond in the right way after missing the trip to Wales.

"I hope so," he said. "Of course there will be players who want to play all the games, but I make the decisions.

"[Marcel] Gecov is a young player who I think needs time. He would like to play all the games but he's only played twice, so he won't be happy.

"I can't make them happy all the time because sometimes I need to play other players. Bobby plays almost 90 per cent of all the games and I think that helps him to get a good profile."

He added: "I feel we are on a good track [with Bobby] because if you look at his top season he scored eight goals, his first season he scored only two goals and he's scored three goals now.

"He's not somebody like Darren Bent. He will set up a lot of goals with his assists and over the last two months he's been fitter than before because last year he had a few injuries."

American Player Rankings: Dempsey and Howard take losses in very different circumstances

It was not a great week for the top two players in the rankings and a particularly bad one for Clint Dempsey at Fulham.

After being the hero against Liverpool last Monday, Dempsey was on the other end of things against Swansea, scoring an own goal and having a penalty saved in a 2-0 loss. In between those two events the American did all he could get his side back into the match, driving the attack and setting up a couple of dangerous moments, but once the penalty was stopped the momentum swung back against the Cottagers.

Howard had his hands full with Arsenal and pulled off several fine saves, but right now every goalkeeper in the world is at the mercy of Robin van Persie, and Howard is no different. The Dutch striker scored one of the goals of the season to give Arsenal a 1-0 win.

Luckily for Howard the road should be a bit easier as Christmas draws near. Everton has three matches in the next two weeks and all of them look reasonably winnable, with a road trip to Sunderland as the most difficult of the fixtures.

For Dempsey and Fulham, the Christmas season could be brutal. The Cottagers have an extra match tossed in for Europa League play, a must-win game against Odense BK Wednesday, and the league schedule is brutal. Bolton comes to London this weekend, but a home match against Manchester United and a trip to Chelsea on Boxing Day loom large.

Neither side is really out of the relegation fight yet, but both seem safe bets to end up safe in the long run. Still, this season has not gone according to plan, and as 2012 begins it will be worth keeping an eye on how Fulham and Everton react in the transfer window.

For the purposes of the ratings, Dempsey and Howard stay one and two and will almost certainly finish 2011 in that order.

1. Clint Dempsey

Age: 28

Club: Fulham
Position: Midfielder

Last Week: 1

Comment: Dempsey had a tough day at the office against Swansea. Two bad moments will do that. However, for much of the rest of the match he was Fulham's most dangerous player and continues to be one of the few real threats the club has to offer.
2. Tim Howard

Age: 32

Club: Everton
Position: Goalkeeper

Last Week: 2

Comments: Howard was beaten by one of the best goals of the EPL season. Van Persie's form right now is absurd and the American 'keeper was at his best to hold Arsenal to just one goal. That's probably a little consolation for a loss that keeps Everton within four points of the relegation fight.
3. Jozy Altidore

Age: 22

Club: AZ
Position: Forward

Last Week: 3

Comments: Altidore continues to play well for AZ and has been the surprise of the year in terms of Americans in Europe. Hopefully that form carries throughout 2012 and can be replicated on the international level.
4. Landon Donovan

Age: 29

Club: LA Galaxy
Position: Midfielder

Last Week: 4

Comments: Donovan is worth keeping and eye on right now because of his club situation and the rumors that inevitably swirl around the Galaxy constantly.
5. Carlos Bocanegra

Age: 32

Club: Rangers
Position: Defender

Last Week: 5

Comments: Bocanegra was back in action this week and his club picked up another routine win in the SPL, holding another clean sheet in the process.

Honorable Mention: A couple of players are noteworthy this week. First, Fabian Johnson of Hoffenheim grabbed two assists, both with good balls in from the left. He continues to show that he can deliver the service the USA has lacked from the wings and could be a major player when World Cup qualifying comes around. The other in Maurice Edu, who seems set to have a contract extension with Rangers in the near future. On the one hand, it's positive to see Edu has gained the trust of the club. On the other, it would be nice to see him in a better league and those chances may go away if his price goes up, which tends to happen when new contracts are signed.

John Arne Riise backs Fulham to progress past Europa League group stage

Backing the Whites: John Arne Riise

John Arne Riise believes Fulham will win their all-important Europa League encounter against Odense if they are on top of their game.

The Cottagers face Odense tonight in their final Group K game knowing victory will secure their place in the knockout stage.

Wisla Krakow will be hoping to capitalise on any potential Fulham slip against the Danish side, who are already out of the running and lie bottom of the group.

The west Londoners won the away tie 2-0 and Riise believes another victory is on the cards if they perform to their best.

"I think every competition and every game is important," Riise said. "The Europa League is going to be interesting now after the Champions League last week, with both Manchester teams now in and Valencia and stuff.

"It is a big competition and obviously we want to win the games, but at the same time we're also thinking about the Premier League.

"But now I'm focusing on the game on Wednesday and after that game, we'll see how it goes and focus on Bolton on Saturday.

"We go into the game tomorrow hoping to win. I don't know the team yet so I don't know what the manager is thinking, but everybody wants to play.

"We want to win and get a good feeling going towards the weekend. We're meeting a side that is struggling in the Europa League, but at the same time we know they have the quality to hurt us if they play at their best.

"We have to be on top of our game, but I just want to play as much as I can - enjoy it, get in a rhythm and if you are rested sometimes that is fine as well.

"I just do whatever the manager tells me to do and I have always done that."

Fulham come into the match on the back of a 2-0 defeat at Swansea and amid speculation over a reported rift between between Bobby Zamora and manager Martin Jol.

The pair's relationship has been a topic of debate in recent months and was fuelled further by the striker's omission from Saturday's match.

Asked if he was aware of any issues between them, Riise said: "First of all I haven't read the papers.

"Tuesday was the first time I trained since the weekend and he trained normally and as far as I am concerned I had no clue.

"He looked smiley and happy so if there is any rift I don't know about that."

Tottenham ready to sign French sensation in swap deal

It has emerged that Tottenham are ready to use a different tactic in their pursuit of Marseille forward, Loic Remy, and will offer Roman Pavlyuchenko as a makeweight in the deal.

The French star is apparently being watched by several Premier League sides such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Fulham, so Spurs will need to offer a distinct advantage in any deal that takes the forward to White Hart Lane.

Pavlyuchenko has had a hard time in North London, failing to ever really find his feet in the Premier League and the club have been looking to offload the Russian for some time now.

The interest in Remy is understandably strong as the striker continues strong form on a club and international level.

The former Lyon player has scored 21 goals in his 44 appearances for Marseille since his Ligue 1 switch from OGC Nice in 2010.

The 24 year-old has also made his name in the international squad, racking up 17 appearances for Les Bleus, netting on four occasions.

Several Russian Premier League sides have thrown their names into the hat to take Pavlyuchenko back to his native country, but a deal has failed to materialise.

Although his addition to the deal would lower the expected price-tag, Remy would still be expected to cost Tottenham between £10m-£15m.

With only Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe the only recognised forwards at White Hart Lane, Harry Redknapp will be keen to add Remy to his offensive ranks as well as getting rid of a fringe player in the meantime.

Jol: I don't care if you sulk, Bobby

MARTIN JOL has told Bobby Zamora: Carry on sulking.
Fulham's hardline boss is taking no nonsense from his big-name stars.

He has also crossed swords with Danny Murphy and Andy Johnson in a turbulent Craven Cottage campaign.

And the big Dutchman reckons pricking the players' egos is his way of trying to bring the best out of an under-achieving and ageing squad.

Firebrand Zamora and Jol clashed again last weekend, when the England Euro 2012 hopeful was left out of the trip to Swansea. The brooding striker is expected to start tonight's must-win Europa League clash against Odense.

Jol, though, admitted: "There will be one or two in the starting eleven who don't like me.

"But it's about doing the business for the club and getting the best out of them. It's not provocation, it's inspiration and trying to stimulate them. It would never be personal.

"Even when I don't like them, I wouldn't tell them. I am a good actor.

"Some players are nice to you and you have a good relationship. But nothing is as it seems and some players sulk. I have to be honest and open.

"Has Bobby sulked? We're different. I like him. In any team you have pressure to perform. I had the same with Andy Johnson and Danny Murphy.

"I hope I can get the best out of Bobby. There are players who want to play in every game but I make the decisions. I can't make all the players happy by playing them all the time.

"It was the same a couple of months ago. I left him out when we went to Odense and he was moaning he was not going with us.

"I thought I did a good thing resting him. But players always have different opinions. For me, the main thing is that we get the best out of them and they give 100 per cent.

"I feel we are on a good track. If you look at his best season he scored eight league goals. He is on three now.

"I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago and he told me 'I love this club'.

"I love the team. There's not one player who has told me he doesn't want to play for this club."

Skipper Murphy has been clobbered by Jol's tough new disciplinary code — fined £10,000 for storming off the pitch after being subbed at West Brom.

Leading scorer Johnson, suspended tonight, is still to sign a new contract with barely six months left on it.

Fulham must win to guarantee a place in the Europa League's last 32.

Left-back John Arne Riise said: "I'd be devastated if we didn't go through."

Riise - Zamora seems happy
Full-back unaware of any rift between team-mate and Fulham boss Jol

John Arne Riise: Fulham full-back has not noticed a problem between Bobby Zamora and Martin Jol

John Arne Riise says he has not detected any problems with Bobby Zamora following reports the Fulham striker has had a bust-up with manager Martin Jol.

Zamora's omission from Fulham's 2-0 defeat at Swansea Cityon Saturday led to renewed speculation that the England international would be on his way out of Craven Cottage in January.

The forward is expected to return to the starting line-up for Wednesday's Europa League tie with Odense and Jol has insisted there is no issue with Zamora.

And, when asked if he was aware of any issues between them, Riise said: "First of all I haven't read the papers.

"Tuesday was the first time I trained since the weekend and he trained normally and as far as I am concerned I had no clue.

"He looked smiley and happy so if there is any rift I don't know about that."

Europa target

Meanwhile, Riise believes Fulham will win their all-important Europa League encounter against Odense if they are on top of their game.

"I think every competition and every game is important," said Riise, with Fulham knowing victory will clinch a place in the knockout stages.

"We're meeting a side that is struggling in the Europa League, but at the same time we know they have the quality to hurt us if they play at their best.

"We have to be on top of our game, but I just want to play as much as I can - enjoy it, get in a rhythm and if you are rested sometimes that is fine as well."

Fulham    v    Odense BK

Europa League Group K
Venue: Craven Cottage Date: Wednesday 14 December Kick-off: 2005 GMT Coverage: BBC Sport website, BBC Radio 5 live and Channel Five

Zamora did not travel for Fulham's game at Swansea on Saturday

Bobby Zamora returns to the Fulham squad for their vital Europa League clash with Odense.

The striker, 30, did not travel to Swansea on Saturday but is recalled as Fulham, second in their group, aim to qualify ahead of Wisla Krakow.

Fellow frontman Andrew Johnson misses out through suspension and Bryan Ruiz is ineligible, although winger Damien Duff and defender Chris Baird return.

Mark Schwarzer faces a fitness test after a fall in the defeat at Swansea.

Twente have already won the group, leaving Fulham and Wisla Krakow to battle it out for second position. The London club have a one-point advantage over the Polish side going into the final round of fixtures.

Fulham manager Martin Jol said: "I realise we need to win this game because of the Wisla Krakow away game, where we lost 1-0.

"It made it difficult for ourselves and we have to win [against Odense]. It is a must-win game.

"I know Twente will play almost a reserve side in the group's other match so I think Wisla have a great chance to win that game so we have to do everything to win."

Provisional squad: Schwarzer, Etheridge, Riise, Kelly, Baird, Hangeland, Hughes, Dembele, Briggs, Kasami, Davies, Duff, Murphy, Gecov, Etuhu, Dempsey, Frei, Zamora, Sa.

Riise prepared for big clubs

Fulham midfielder John Arne Riise believes the Europa League will become more challenging with the eliminated Champions League clubs' inclusion.

The Cottagers welcome Odense on Wednesday night for their final Group K game, a win for Martin Jol's side set to secure their place in the knockout stages.

With the west Londoners also battling hard in the Premier League mid-table, Riise expects the European tournament to get even more taxing.

The likes of Valencia, Ajax Amsterdam, FC Porto and the Manchester rivals City and United have since joined the ranks of Europe's second-tier competition.

"I think every competition and every game is important," the Norway international said.

He added: "We want to win and get a good feeling going towards the weekend.

"We're meeting a side that is struggling in the Europa League, but at the same time we know they have the quality to hurt us if they play at their best.

Fulham v Odense preview
Zamora returns to squad; fitness test for Schwarzer

Fulham welcome Odense to Craven Cottage knowing a win is required to ensure progression to the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Martin Jol's Premier League club sit second in Group K and are six points behind leaders FC Twente, who have already qualified.

Fulham could be overtaken by Wisla Krakow, with the Polish team trailing by just one point, and a win is therefore required to be sure their destiny is in their own hands.

Jol has been frustrated the build-up to an important match has been overshadowed by ongoing reports of a rift with Bobby Zamora
The striker was left out of Saturday's match squad at Swansea, but he will return for Wednesday's game amid speculation of a return to Tottenham or a move to either QPR or Sunderland.
Fright

Jol said regarding Zamora: "I said to him a few weeks ago, 'do you love this club?' and he said, 'yeah, I love this club, I love this team'.

"I don't think there is any problem. I think the grass is always greener [on the other side] but it is not only for him."

Meanwhile, Odense manager Henrik Clausen is hoping to give Fulham a fright, despite the Danish side being unable to progress.

Fulham will be without Zamora's fellow frontman, Andrew Johnson, who misses out through suspension and Bryan Ruiz is ineligible.

Winger Damien Duff and defender Chris Baird return, but veteran goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer faces a fitness test after a heavy fall in the match against Swansea.

Enforced striker switch for Jol

Bobby Zamora will replace the suspended Andrew Johnson in Fulham's Europa League clash against Odense at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old England international striker was surprisingly left out of the squad which crashed to a 2-0 defeat at Swansea in the Premier League on Saturday which resulted in speculation of a fall-out between him and Cottagers' boss Martin Jol.

Jol has since played down the reports and insisted that Zamora is happy with the club, while he will get a chance to fire the Londoners into the last-32 of the Europa League in their final Group K clash against Danish side Odense.

Johnson must sit out due to a ban, while fellow striker Bryan Ruiz is ineligible which paves the way clear for Zamora. Winger Damien Duff and defender Chris Baird are also in contention to return but goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer faces a late fitness test on a knock he suffered against the Swans at the weekend.

Jol has called on his players to go all out for the victory to ensure to ensure they go through along with group leaders FC Twente and ahead of Wisla Krakow.

He said: "I realise we need to win this game because of the Wisla Krakow away game, where we lost 1-0.

"It made it difficult for ourselves and we have to win [against Odense]. It is a must-win game.

"I know Twente will play almost a reserve side in the group's other match so I think Wisla have a great chance to win that game so we have to do everything to win."

"If the manager decides to rest me then that's fine and I respect it."

John Arne Riise has no objections when Martin Jol leaves him out of the starting line-up

Fulham star John Arne Riise does not have an issue with boss Martin Jol.

The Norwegian has been in and out of the side for Europa League matches but has no issue when he is rested.

"From my point of view, I came into the competition a little bit later than the other players, because they started early (on 30 June).

"The manager decided to rest me for a few games at the beginning but now I've played the last two.

"I want to play every match but if the manager decides to rest me then that's fine and I respect it."

Fulham defender says team-mates must be alert against Odense

John Arne Riise has told his team-mates they have be on top of their game

Fulham defender John Arne Riise has told his team-mates they have be on top of their game to ensure victory in the Whites' must-win Europa League Group K game with Odense.

The Danish side are out of the Europa League already and have had a miserable domestic campaign but the Norwegian knows that his side have to be on the ball.

"They haven't had the best campaign," Riise said. "But they have the quality to hurt any team, so that's why we have to be on top of our game.

"I'm sure we'll do that tomorrow, play our best football and get the three points.

"We're fully aware of what they can do, but, at the same time, on paper we're the better side and should win."

Riise knows the consequences of defeat would be severe on the Whites.

"I would be devastated if we didn't go through," he added.

"I hate losing and I always try to win every game I play. Obviously that doesn't always happen, but tomorrow is a match we're favourites for and it would be quite hurtful not to go through.
