Fulham star believes 'extreme' eating habits have extended career

Mark Schwarzer credits his diet for still being able to play at the top level, even as he approaches his 40th birthday

Fulham star Mark Schwarzer believes that eating steak for breakfast have helped him continue to play.

The goalkeeper, who will be 40 in October, admitted that his diet has turned heads but he has faith in the process.

"They [teammates] would probably say that I am extreme," he said.

"But I don't see it as being extreme any more.

"I actually enjoy it.

"I see the difference in myself and my own appearance and also how I feel."

Schwarzer also believes that players, in general, can carry on playing for longer because of advances in sports science.

"All the indications are there," he said.

"When you look at the leagues around the world, players seem to be going longer and staying fitter, and staying at the highest level longer than ever before.

"I don't know if people register that. I don't know if people take note of it."

Schwarzer plans World Cup finale

IT'S almost unimaginable for the Socceroos to take the field without Mark Schwarzer lining up between the posts.

But even the indestructible goalkeeper, who is closing in on the magical 100-cap mark, concedes that time will eventually catch up with him, and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, should Australia make it that far, will be his swansong.

Not even the Asian Cup in Australia in 2015 is likely to tempt him to continue for a final farewell at home.

''There would be no better way to end my international career [than at the World Cup],'' he said. ''Asian Cup in 2015? You never say never but more likely no. I think it [World Cup] would be a good period to end and let the team move forward.

''The way I feel and the way I have played ... I definitely feel like I can play at the top level for another two years.''

Schwarzer is well aware of the constant dialogue about the age of the Socceroo squad, but he points out that players competing at the top level until well into their thirties is quite the norm.

Still, he says it is a concern that fewer of the younger Australians are breaking through into high-level clubs and establishing themselves as first-choice players.

''People have called for a transitional period for quite some time,'' he said. ''Everybody keeps referring to how old the team is and how old the individuals are. But you look in the Premier League, a lot of the leagues ... some of the players [are older] and they're still playing at the highest level. The bottom line is performance.

''If there's a player out there who's 24 and he's better than any other player in the team, of course you are going to play, that's without a doubt.

''But the fact of the matter is, the reason why most of us at the older age are still playing, is because, and I truly believe, we're probably still the best players to play for the country. If it was any different the manager would definitely do something about it. He believes what he sees.''

Schwarzer makes no excuses for the loss to Oman in November.

''It was just one of our poorest performances,'' he said. ''Oman deserved to win, without a doubt. We were nowhere near our best and [they] deserved to win the game, it's as simple as that. Conditions were a lot more favourable to us back then, it's a lot hotter now. The Omanis are going to find it difficult in the heat as well, but obviously they're more acclimatised and accustomed to it than we are.

''It's going to be a very tough game and it's going to be a different style of football than we play normally because of the conditions. It's got to be more controlled, more disciplined in the way that you attack as well.

''Staying in control, making the right decisions at the right time, even more important than normally, because at times when you're playing in normal conditions ... you can make decisions that maybe catch you out of position a little bit, but you're able to get back into position ... whereas here the conditions have an enormous effect.''

I thought this was going to be about Stocky dying of a heart attack whilst eating a huge steak.

Is Stocky still a bit 'Stocky'?
He's a man who won't put too much stock into Mark's wisdom.
