Clint Dempsey: Impact Soccer Star Will Have on US If He Goes to Liverpool

Clive Brunskill/Getty Images

American soccer star Clint Dempsey could have a new home in Liverpool soon.

If the US Men's National Team midfielder ends up leaving Fulham for Liverpool, then the implications could be enormous for a burgeoning soccer fanbase in the US.

Dempsey has been impressive for Fulham, scoring 23 goals and contributing six assists 2011-12.

Unfortunately for American fans, Fulham is in the shadows of Europe's elite squads, hiding Dempsey's success from American eyes.

Already with a strong American backing, Liverpool would be ideal for Dempsey, as more Americans could witness his rise on the pitch.

A move to the Reds would put Dempsey among the few American stars to play for a legitimate soccer club, and put the 29-year-old back in the spotlight.

The move makes sense for Liverpool as well.

The Reds would benefit tremendously from Dempsey's versatility. A great dribbler and superb playmaker, Dempsey is a threat to score or create for his teammates.

A creative style, Dempsey's game will be exciting for Liverpool fans, as they watch him tear up the field.

Put Dempsey alongside Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard, and Liverpool could feature one of the most potent three-headed monsters in the Premier League.

An already talented team, Liverpool would not need to rely on Dempsey to do most of the heavy lifting as he did for Fulham. Instead, he should be able to coexist alongside Liverpool's other stars.

Although Manchester City still boasts an impressive squad and Chelsea is always lethal, Dempsey could have Liverpool as a capable dark horse next season.

Success in Anfield would be critical in boosting soccer viewership in the states.

American fans would have the chance to support a refreshing alternative to EPL powerhouses Manchester United and Chelsea, by cheering on the Texas native in Liverpool.

A transfer to Liverpool would also be monumental for American soccer, as it would signify the heavy courting of an American soccer player by a legitimate European club.

If the stars align, Demspey will be in red next season, leaving Fulham for a chance at American soccer immortality in Liverpool.

Wow! We are not a legitimate club! I had no idea...

You beat me to it Ben..I had to go post a reply.   I expect to banned from bleacherreport.com by morning.

JBH

Just read the replys on Bleacherreport.

That Oren Friedegg sounds a total dickhead!  fp.gif

The reply from Fulham Fan was exactly what I was thinking obviously this guy doesn't actually watch games involving Fulham and also has no idea on Clint's standing in the EPL.

I think he should stick to writting reports on Rounders! (or as the septics call it "Baseball")

jarv

This bleacherreport guy really doesn't have a clue. Complete knucklehead.

cmg

Is "legitimate soccer club" used here in the same way as Fat Tony uses "legitimate businessman"?

In which case Liverpool will, no doubt, be making Clint an offer he can't refuse.

Huddersfield Town and Jordan Rhodes "relaxed" over "inevitable" transfer talk linking striker to Reading, Fulham and West Ham

SIMON GRAYSON says speculation about Huddersfield Town's prize asset Jordan Rhodes is inevitable – but that both he and the strike star remain "relaxed" about the situation.

The 23-year-old Scotland hot shot, who fired 40 goals as the Galpharm side won promotion to the Championship last season and has notched 85 in three campaigns since moving from Ipswich, has been linked with a string of Premier League clubs, including Reading, Fulham and West Ham.

But sources suggest no firm bid has been tabled in the seven weeks since Town went up at Wembley, and Grayson confirmed: "As far as Jordan is concerned, it's business as usual.

"He returned for pre-season training last Thursday and got straight down to work, which is exactly what you'd expect of a no-nonsense person like him.

"When you score 40 goals in a season, there is sure to be speculation. There's nothing any of us can do about that.

"But the great thing about Jordan is that he won't let it go to his head. He showed last season he can handle all the talk and go about his job, and that will carry on."

Rhodes, who will retain the No17 shirt next season, is contracted to Town until 2015 and Grayson continued: "Our stance hasn't changed – it would take a very serious offer to tempt us to sell.

"The chairman and I have spoken to Jordan about where we want the club to go. He's happy with the situation and so are we."

Grayson could yet be without Rhodes, who also scored eight goals in eight games for Scotland Under 21s last term, for a spell of pre-season after he was placed on stand-by for the Olympics, with Team GB coach Stuart Pearce having until Wednesday, July 25 to call him up.

Fulham and bookies

One thing I've often wondered about is whether some teams are good value with bookmakers. It always seemed to me that Fulham could be had at really good odds on 0-0 draws, for instance, although these days, what with this newfangled attacking play of Martin Jol's, you never know where you are.

But still. Bookmakers' odds reflect not just what they think will happen, but also what they think people will think when they see odds. So there's no point in putting Man City v Wolves at 1-100 because nobody will put any money on; you have to make things tempting enough to attract punters but not so tempting that you'll lose money. I'll try to get more of these sportsbook reviews going next season, and of course you can look forward to the grand Predictortron evaluation just before things kick off, but in the meantime, anything interesting in the numbers?

You'd think that Fulham, being sort of anonymous, might very well fly under the general radar, but in fact the bookies had us just about right (again, we acknowledge here that the odds were a moving target, and that each week they reflected our position in the league, so they really ought to have been okay).

       Home av Away av T
Man United      1.4     1.8     3.2
Man City        1.4     1.9     3.3
Chelsea 1.5     2.2     3.7
Arsenal 1.6     2.6     4.2
Liverpool       1.7     2.4     4.1
Tottenham       1.7     2.6     4.3
Everton 2.3     4.3     6.6
Newcastle       2.5     4.6     7.1
Fulham  2.6     5.2     7.8
Aston Villa     2.9     5.4     8.3
Sunderland      2.9     5.2     8.2
Stoke   2.9     5.5     8.4
West Brom       3.1     5.5     8.6
Swansea 3.1     6.6     9.6
Norwich 3.2     7.3     10.5
Bolton  3.5     6.8     10.3
Blackburn       3.5     7.4     10.9
QPR     3.7     6.7     10.4
Wolves  3.9     8.1     12.0
Wigan   4.1     7.9     12.0

(please excuse formatting, but the numbers are the average decimal odds to win home games and the average decimal odds to win away games, then those two added together)

So yes, Fulham had the 9th 'best' odds and finished 9th. Chelsea weren't as good as bookies match pricings, Wigan's survival surprised everyone and their odds reflected this.

As I say, we'll try to keep more of an eye on this sort of thing as the season progresses, perhaps some kind of crowd-inspired predictions contest, or maybe some sort of syndicate.  Open to suggestions.

Etuhu's Assessment

Dickson Etuhu insists his Fulham team mates have only taken small steps towards peak fitness but all the signs coming from Sunday's draw against HB Køge are very positive.

"It was a good fitness game for everyone to see where we are at and to work our legs," Etuhu said.

"It's nice to make steady progress during pre-season and work on our fitness with the ball.

"It is a bit different from training. It's always difficult especially when the opposition already has a few games under their belt. It was a good game to play in.

"You get more fitness when you play football anyway, no matter how much running you do."

And the first game of the Whites' tour of Germany was no shock to the system of the 30-year-old midfielder, who decided to knuckle down early and begin his training ahead of schedule.

"I did some fitness work in the close season and for me it was more to do with not playing as much last season," he added.

"It was important to give myself a chance to catch up a little bit with the boys that had been playing and it's proved worthwhile."

Liverpool prepare £5m Dempsey bid as they look to offload Carroll permanently
The Fulham attacking midfielder has rejected a new contract from the London club but will have to wait for his dream move while the England striker's future is resolved

EXCLUSIVE
By Wayne Veysey | Chief Correspondent

Liverpool are preparing a £5 million bid for Clint Dempsey as they step up plans to sell Andy Carroll on a permanent deal.

Goal.com understands that the American has rejected a new contract offer from Fulham and has told the Londoners that he wants to leave for a Champions League-calibre club.

Liverpool have pursued Dempsey for 12 months and have now stepped up their interest in a player whom Brendan Rodgers has privately made clear that he wants to bring to Merseyside.

Fulham value the USA international at £9m but a combination of his age – 29 – and his contract situation – he has just entered the final year of his current deal – mean that they will settle for a fee of around £5m.

Sources have said that Liverpool have not yet made a formal offer for the attacking midfielder and are, indeed, not expected to sign him until Carroll's future is resolved.

Newcastle have made an official bid to sign the England striker on a season-long loan, which was rejected on Sunday night by the Merseysiders.

Nevertheless, Rodgers has told Liverpool that he wants to offload the club's record signing on a permanent deal and the club are willing to listen to any offers of around £15m.

West Ham United have made enquiries for Carroll but only have the funds to make a loan move in which the cost of his wages would be shared with Liverpool, while Fulham's reported interest last week was believed to merely be a carefully-engineered mechanism to push through the Dempsey deal.

Aston Villa are interested in Carroll but the player's most realistic avenue for a permanent move is a romantic return to boyhood club Newcastle.

It is believed that the Tyneside club regard Carroll as a back-up option in case they lose Demba Ba, whose future remains up in the air because of the £7m exit clause in his deal that runs until the end of the month.

Liverpool, who signed Italy forward Fabio Borini last Friday, could have to bide their time before making an offer for Dempsey.

The attacking midfielder, who scored 17 Premier League goals last season and 23 in all competitions, has rejected Fulham's offer of a new three year-contract that includes an option for a fourth year.

Dempsey, who moved to west London five-and-a-half years ago, believes that it could be the last opportunity he gets to play for one of the elite Premier League clubs.
