It's his number from when he was much younger.  I think Grant Wahl's interview mentioned this... I'll try to track it down.  And yes, hence Deuce.

there was a player (actually a legend) from Bulgarian side Levski who got transferred to Rennes in France. He played with number 90 and jokes based on facts were - 'why does he have No 90? >> cause he played 9 minutes and scored 0 goals all season'
