I have this old IBM think pad that went belly up a while back. It was OK one day, then not the next, I got this blue screen and haven't been able to boot it up every since. I've tried starting it in safe mode, the last known settings etc. It's a real shame as I have loads of work related stuff on there that I'd love to have access to. Any ideas?

Oh-oh.... Blue screen. Never a good sign. Hope you backed up what you wanted to keep. I had a similar problem a few years back and it needed a re-build....

Looks like the file system is corrupt and the machine may need a rebuild or even possibly a new hard disk. Have a look at this Microsoft article on how to fix:

Right well I ain't got the Windows disk for a start  :bang head:

It could just be the boot sector that is corrupt.

You could remove the disc from the laptop and plug into another machine as a secondary drive and see if the data is still there.

if the disc mounts as another drive but you can't see the data, you could run some recovery software on it, like - http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/free-data-recovery-software.htm

or finally you could take it to a PC Fixit shop but they'll charge.

depends on how important the data is and how technical you are.

If you've got important data on that disk that needs recovering, there is software that will allow you to boot the computer up and to copy data to another location. That would likely require another computer with the hard drive space to accomodate the data, of course.

You said that you did not have the disk. You can go to ebay and buy a disk. Don't know which version of windows you had, but I searched Win '98 just for s's and g's and found an unopened copy w/ the product key for 30$ US. Shouldn't be too difficult or expensive finding your version.

Go to www.bootdisk.com, download the windows 98 boot disk, if your laptop doesn't have a floppy drive you can burn it on to a cd. Boot up the computer from the cd, when you get a command prompt, type FDISK /MBR and hit return, this will rebuild the master boot record, after this type in DSKCHK or diskcheck and this will scan the drive for issues. if you are not afraid to take out the hard drive, connect it to a newer computer and it will do all this automatically.
