Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni was forced to step in after a training-ground spat threatened to hamper plans for Tuesday's key World Cup qualifier in the Faroe Islands.

Defender Stephen Kelly, left out of Friday's 6-1 thrashing by Germany, rowed with Trapattoni's assistant Marco Tardelli after Sunday's final session in Malahide.

It is understood that the Fulham full-back threatened not to board the flight to Vagar until Trapattoni and other Ireland officials intervened.

Kelly is now almost certain to be among the substitutes for Ireland's third qualifier in the World Cup 2014 campaign, meaning two of Friday's poor performers - Darren O'Dea and Seamus Coleman - could keep their places.

The bust-up is the latest blow for under-fire Trapattoni, who faced calls to quit his role after the country's worst home defeat in a competitive match.

The Italian coach has been accused of falling out with members of his squad and staff throughout his four-and-a-half year reign, with James McClean a recent dissenting voice after his failure to get off the bench

I agree with Kelly, their defence was shocking and he's definitely not worse than the likes of Coleman, O'Dea, Ward or O'Shea, that's for sure.
