Gameiro Goal Defeats Qatar

Fulham's Corey Gameiro scored the only goal of the game as Australia defeated Qatar 1-0 in their opening match of the AFC U19 Tournament on Sunday.

Gameiro's Whites teammate Ryan Williams also played 85 minutes of the game, which was played in hot and humid conditions in the United Arab Emirates.

Gameiro broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, calmly lifting a shot over the diving Qatar goalkeeper and inside the far post. He almost doubled Australia's lead shortly afterwards but saw an effort cannon off the crossbar.

The Socceroos' second Group D fixture is against Syria on Tuesday. They conclude their group with a clash against Saudi Arabia on Thursday.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the Quarter-Finals.

The Monday Column: Fulham have a happy Cottage under Jol

He's been relatively successful everywhere he's been says Ralph Ellis, but Fulham boss Martin Jol rarely gets the credit he deserves. A top six finish might just change that.

Martin Jol always strikes me as one of those managers who never quite gets the credit he deserves. Just take a glance at his record over more than 20 years since he took his first proper coaching job in Holland with Den Haag and you might understand more.

He won the Dutch Cup with Roda, got Tottenham to within a dodgy lasagne of the Champions League, took Hamburg to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, and while Ajax missed out on the League title by a point they scored 106 goals and won their final 14 games of the season. At every club he's managed he's been responsible for a significant step up in performances.

That was until he got to Fulham, where last season he finished ninth - one place behind what Roy Hodgson had achieved while reaching the Europa League final the year before. But given the resources at Craven Cottage that's still more than respectable, and there are signs he could yet do better again.

Jol doesn't do really do self publicity. I was at Craven Cottage on Saturday and tried to suggest to him in the press conference afterwards that Fulham deserved credit for how they'd stuck at the game against Everton and rescued a point. Another manager - Alan Pardew comes to mind as an example - might have taken the chance to remind everybody about the fantastic team spirit he had generated. Jol just smiled and said: "I have to be honest, we could have lost by four or five."

The point is, however, that they didn't lose by four or five. In fact they didn't lose at all, and it's not a coincidence. Fulham's home record in 2012 is bettered only by Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City. And while they don't generate the big headlines of their London neighbours at Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham or even West Ham, it's the status of performances on the pitch that dictate places in the table rather than the size of headlines.

Jol's side are currently between 1.8 and 1.94 to achieve a top ten finish, and that looks as safe a bet as you could ask for. They have a solid defence, in which Aaron Hughes and Brede Hangeland have long since established one of the game's most settled partnerships, which has been improved by the signing of German international right back Sascha Riether.

But it is the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov which rovides the bit of creativity to fill the gap left by the sale of last season's 17 goal top scorer Clint Dempsey.

Berbatov's early season issues with injury have disguised his potential to make a difference. He may look lazy and laconic, but his movement is deceptively effective and his ability to explode into life makes him a genuine threat. He thrived under Jol's management at Tottenham, and there are early signs that he will do so again. He brings others into play, as well as getting goals himself.

Jol's astute knowledge of the European transfer market, and the backing of owner Mohamed Al-Fayed, suggests the squad will be strengthened again in January - last year he plucked Pavel Pogrebnyak from nowhere and the Russian scored six goals in 12 League games. Without the complications of playing Europa League games, it makes them a good outside bet at up to 16.0 for a top six finish.

A good test of the potential will be when they take a trip to play troubled Arsenal on Saturday, and 6.8 in the early market for Fulham to win at The Emirates is fantastic value. At the very least I'll be laying the Gunners, minus the suspended Jack Wilshere and fatigued from a midweek Champions League fixture, at 1.54.

Malbranque backed for France call

Lyon goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre has called on France coach Didier Deschamps to select veteran midfielder Steed Malbranque for the friendly against Italy later this month.

Malbranque is enjoying a wonderful spell of form after a troubled 18 months which saw him leave Sunderland for St Etienne only to cancel his contract with Les Verts due to a lack of enjoyment.

He re-emerged at Lyon - the club for whom he made his professional debut in 1998 - at the start of the season and has been a revelation.

The 32-year-old was again instrumental in Les Gones' 5-2 win over Bastia, scoring from the penalty spot for his first Ligue 1 goal in almost 12 years.

Afterwards, Vercoutre told reporters: "If you have a coach who does not care about age then he must call up Malbranque.

"Honestly, I would like him to be called up. It will happen soon and he deserves it so much. He is our main man, our 'Mister Plus'."

Malbranque has been included in a France squad just once, in 2004 for a friendly against Holland, but did not get on the pitch.

Vercoutre believes the former Fulham man has the necessary skills to slot straight into Les Bleus set-up and inspire those around him.

He added: "He wins the ball, he gives it and he scores goals. Everyone is in tune with Steed.

"He does not score many goals but what he does is so impressive. If I was a selector I would take him.

"I have not seen anyone as good as him for a long time."

The defeat of Bastia moved Lyon within a point of the Ligue 1 summit after a madcap game at the Stade Gerland.

Seven different goalscorers, three penalties and two red cards made for an entertaining afternoon, the hosts squandering a two-goal lead before pulling ahead again in the second half.

Maxime Gonalons and Alexandre Lacazette put Lyon in control but Wahbi Khazri and Jerome Rothen pulled Bastia level, the latter with a spot-kick after Dejan Lovren was sent off.

Lisandro Lopez restored Lyon's lead from 12 yards after Fethi Harek was dismissed and Jimmy Briand and Malbranque scored in stoppage time to give the scoreline a misleadingly one-sided look.

Lyon coach Remi Garde admitted it was a strange afternoon.

"It was a crazy game and it became completely mad after both teams had had a player sent off," he told www.ligue1.com.

"The sending-off of Dejan Lovren was not a good thing but the team adapted well to the change in system, with two lines of four and one striker.

"There some good and bad things to take out of the game.

"On the positive side, we played well going forward and created lots of chances. But defensively we got ourselves into trouble rather easily.

"These are things we are aware of and need to work on.

"It will be harder in the coming games with the suspensions that are killing us at the moment."

His Bastia counterpart Frederic Hantz bemoaned his side's errors which he felt contributed to their defeat.

He said: "The first two goals came from us making silly mistakes, but we did really well to come back to 2-2. To do that at Lyon when you are 2-0 down is great.

"We were in an ideal situation at half-time but the start of the second period was always going to be decisive if we wanted to win the game.

"Lyon got the goal, and ultimately we deserved to lose the game.

"We needed to limit the number of errors. The start of the second half was crucial."

Dalla Valle Impressing

Davis keen to take Fulham forward on loan

Steve Davis has told the club's official web-site that he has been impressed enough by the young Finnish striker Lauri Dalla Valle to take him on loan for a month. The Alex boss may well try to sign him on a month's loan before tomorrow night's trip to Doncaster Rovers.

Dalla Valle joined us on Friday in FA Cup week and has trained with us over the last couple of days.
Davis and his coaching staff have been suitably impressed by the 21-year-old and feels he has the ability to make a difference to our attack, especially with AJ Leitch-Smith and Max Clayton.

Steve told the club's official web-site: "Fulham kindly gave us an opportunity to have a look at Lauri with it being FA Cup week for us and they said he could play for us in an Under-21 game if we wanted to, but we have seen something in him in training, which makes us thing he will make a difference to us.

"Fulham told us that if we saw something before he played for the Under-21s and we could do something quickly then we could. They have been really good with us and we hope we can do something and take him on loan.

"We will have him here for a month initially and take it from there. He is quick and mobile and take goals. Her has experience of this league and can play on the shoulder, a bit like Max.

He added: "He is lively and has fitted in well and we thing he would make a good addition to us."

Arsenal v Fulham – Picks of the Week
The Gunners will look to home comforts on Saturday after their disappointing defeat at Old Trafford, but they might be hard to come by against a strong Cottagers side.

After suffering a meek defeat at Manchester United on Saturday, Arsenal will hope to kick-start their Premier League campaign this weekend at home to Fulham – a side that have never won an away game against the Gunners.

Following a much-lauded start to the season that saw Arsene Wenger's men win six of their opening ten matches, conceding only eight goals in the process, their form has deteriorated rapidly following the October international break.

Since then, they have registered just two wins from five matches – a controversial 1-0 win over struggling QPR and the rollercoaster League Cup clash with Reading – conceding ten goals along the way. It's safe to say Steve Bould is no longer flavour of the month.

And the Gunners aren't exactly firing on all cylinders in attack, either. Lukas Podolski has failed to net since October 3rd and Olivier Giroud still has only one Premier League goal to his name. It makes top scorer Theo Walcott's role as perennial substitute all the more baffling.

A measure of the troubles currently facing Arsenal is the fact that Wenger's 2012/13 vintage are also a point lighter at this stage of the season than last year's counterparts and five goals worse off too.

Ten of those goals and the vast majority of those points were, of course, courtesy of Robin van Persie, and there was a sense of inevitability that the deadly Dutchman would strike against his former employers last weekend.

Van Persie's third-minute finish, coupled with Patrice Evra's second-half header, were enough to see off Arsenal, who gained a modicum of pride back through Santi Cazorla's last-ditch goal, though in truth the 2-1 scoreline flattered the Gunners. To compound it all, Jack Wilshere was sent off too.

Arsenal are heavy favourites in bwin's 3way market at a price of 12/25 to defeat Fulham, with the draw at 31/10 and the Cottagers a healthy 23/4.

Although the Cottagers have an awful record at Arsenal, they are certainly a more durable force than their price suggests; Fulham currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, behind Arsenal only on goal difference.

They have suffered only three defeats all season, two of those coming at the hands of the two Manchester clubs, while those same sides are the only teams to have scored more league goals than Martin Jol's men to date.

It's an excellent start considering the loss of their two best players, Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele, at the end of the transfer window, though the capture of Dimitar Berbatov has certainly softened that blow.

Historically, Fulham's away form has been their Achilles' heel in the Premier League, but they have improved in the last couple of seasons under Jol and Mark Hughes, and they are no longer soft touches away from Craven Cottage.

Football is a game of fine margins and had it not been for last-minute goals away at Southampton and Reading, Fulham would be boasting a three-game away winning streak.

Instead, they could only register one point from each – a result they also secured at the Emirates last season with a 1-1 draw. With Arsenal short of form and Fulham full of confidence, it could be a similar outcome on Saturday – and who would bet against former Spurs striker Berbatov finding the net?

Any new customers wishing to use the free £20 bet their receive for joining bwin.com on this match could pocket a handy £82 if they successfully back a stalemate at the Emirates.

Prem duo set for Trotter scrap

Fulham and Southampton are reportedly set to battle it out for Millwall midfielder Liam Trotter in the January transfer window.

The highly-rated 24-year-old has enjoyed a successful start to the new campaign with six goals for the Lions, who sit in mid-table in the Championship following a seven-match unbeaten run.

And the Daily Mirror claims that Cottagers boss Martin Jol has sent scouts to watch Trotter in action for Kenny Jackett's side in recent matches, while Saints chief Nigel Adkins is also thought to be monitoring the former Ipswich man's situation at the Den given that he signed him for Scunthorpe in the past.

The Lions will not want to let Trotter leave without a fight but it is thought a £2million bid could be enough to prise him away from the London club in the New Year.

Riether: Fortune Favoured Whites

Sascha Riether admitted Fulham struck lucky in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Everton.

The Whites led 1-0 when Bryan Ruiz's free-kick went in off the post and Tim Howard, but Everton dominated proceedings thereafter, deservedly drawing level when Marouane Fellaini fired home.

Fellaini then put Everton 2-1 in front, with Mark Schwarzer forced into several fine saves shortly afterwards.

However, Fulham grabbed a somewhat fortunate point late on when Riether's cross from the right was missed by Dimitar Berbatov but bundled home by substitute Steve Sidwell.

"I saw Dimitar and crossed but then Sidwell knocked it in," said Riether. "But it didn't matter who scored. We needed a goal in the last minute so we're happy. We played against a very good team. We were lucky but that's football. I'm told Everton had 27 shots which is a lot so we'll have to work on that. I can understand why Everton are disappointed. They're the best team we've played this season. We had to fight until the end and we did it."

Sidwell's last-minute strike went some way to making up for conceding stoppage-time equalisers at Southampton and Reading in Fulham's last two away games.

"In football you always have to be positive," stated Riether. "In the last games we've conceded goals in the last few minutes but we always know we can score and we'd get a chance because we've got quality all over the pitch. It was important that we didn't lose."

German international Riether has impressed during his short time at the Club, having arrived on a season-long loan from FC Cologne in the summer.

And the right-back hopes continued good performances may lead to a permanent switch when his current deal comes to an end.

"I enjoy it very much here," he said. "I am only here for a year so we will see what happens. We've had a good start and hopefully we can continue it. It would be nice if I could stay. English football is unbelievable. It's a great honour to play in the Barclays Premier League.

"We have a lot of interest in the Premier League in Germany as there are many German players over here. Then there are players like Mladen Petrić and Ashkan Dejagah who came over here from the Bundesliga."

Arsenal v Fulham referee announced

It has been announced that referee Andre Marriner will take charge of Arsenal v Fulham in the Barclay's Premier League at the weekend. His assistants will be R. Ganfield and A. Holmes with Lee Probert acting as the fourth official (you know, the one who touted on Wenger and got him sent off for kicking a water bottle at Old Trafford – both Probert and Mike Dean were censured after the decision and sent Wenger an apology).  Wenger has also faced an FA probe after saying this about Probert when he took charge of an Arsenal game:
He got it all wrong and all on the same side. The ref influenced the game in completely the wrong way.

The opponents that day? Fulham.

Marriner's Arsenal record reads as
Refereed 13, Arsenal wins 7, draws 3, defeats 3.

Marriner was in charge of the 5-3 win over Chelsea as well as the 7-1 over Blackburn and the 6-2 over Derby. He was also the man in the middle against Wigan when we lost 2-1 and when we lost 4-3 to Blackburn.

Striker Conundrum Part 3

It really is a puzzle that Martin Jol is having trouble solving.

Our boss has pondered, in the past, as to who his best duo are out of a quartet of Petric, Rodallega, Berbatov and Ruiz and on Saturday, as we clawed back a point off of an Everton team that will be bemoaning the fact that they failed to take all three points.

Speaking about his ongoing conundrum, after the match, our Dutchman remarked,

"I felt that Ruiz and Berba was the best combination for this game."

"But I know for a fact that Petric is one of our most gifted players, so it is not easy."

"I need to change the system to play them all."

If that is the case, any suggestions as to what formation we might play?

Send For Trotter!

Are we to expect a striker signing come the January transfer window?

The tabloid press seems to think so!

They`re in unison with regard to the possibility that Fulham are paying very close attention to the Millwall striker Liam Trotter.

The 24 year-old has hit the net 6 times for Millwall this season and the tabloid press reckon he`s in the £2 million bracket.

As for competition for his signature, the name of Southampton is being banded about.

I`d suggest you all just sit back and see what happens, if anything!

Sidwell still needs to find his form, says Fulham boss

Fulham's Steve Sidwell (left) celebrates scoring a late equaliser against Everton.

Martin Jol praised Steve Sidwell for bagging a last-gasp equaliser against Everton on Saturday but admitted the midfielder is still not back to his best after a long injury lay-off.

The 29-year-old started on the bench for Fulham but rescued his side to earn a 2-2 draw after they were comprehensively outplayed by the Toffees.

As he was in the 3-3 draw against Reading, Mahamadou Diarra was preferred in the heart of the line-up and Jol revealed he is still not back to his best after a hernia injury and several operations ruled him out for the final three months of last season.

Jol said: "He [Sidwell] started four or five games.

"Mahamadou Diarra came back from injury so I had to make a decision.

"I feel, and Sidwell will agree, that before his injury he was playing at 100 per cent, he was good.

"Now he still has to find his [form], but he's a confident player."

On the midfielder's 90th minute equaliser, the Dutchman said: "You could say he's a box to box player, so I always know that he will do something.

"But to pop up on the far post, on the left side, although he played on the right, is exactly what I wanted – but you need a bit of luck as well.

"I changed it against Aston Villa. We didn't look like scoring and I thought, 'I have to change something', and it came off."

Baird takes heart from Fulham fightback

Chris Baird

CHRIS Baird believes Fulham will take great heart from the way they salvaged a point against Everton on Saturday, even though they were well below their best.

It needed an injury-time goal from sub Steve Sidwell to cancel two goals from Marouane Fellaini which had looked certain to give the dominant visitors all three points.

"It's good character from the players," the midfielder said.

"It was a poor performance – not up to our standards and we're disappointed with how we played. But it shows if you keep going until the final whistle, we can get a result in the end and we'll take some positives from the game.

"I'm sure we'll talk about where it went wrong through the week to put things right and move on."

Baird added: "You have to give credit to Everton and their style of play. They didn't let us play our football and you have to hold your hands up sometimes and give credit to the opposition.

"It just wasn't our day, but we've got quality in the team and we get chances and thankfully one fell for Steve Sidwell, and he's finished it really well."

Fulham set for crunch Hangeland talks to prevent him leaving for free

Fulham want to call key defender Brede Hangeland in for showdown contract talks before Christmas in an attempt to prevent him leaving the club on a free transfer.

The Craven Cottage club are keen to tie down their 31-year-old captain to a new and improved long-term contract.

But if Fulham are not able to agree an extension with Hangeland then they are ready to listen to offers in January for the Norway skipper, who is understood to earn in the region of £40,000 a week.

Up in the air: Fulham want to sort out Brede Hangeland's future before the transfer window opens

Manager Martin Jol has made sorting out Hangeland's future a top priority for the club's board — but the centre half has so far resisted their efforts to begin negotiations.

As the situation stands, Hangeland — who has made 169 Fulham appearances since joining in 2008 from  FC Copenhagen — can sign a free transfer pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.

Fulham, Southampton chase Championship starlet

Both Fulham and Southampton are eyeing January moves for Millwall man Liam Trotter who is enjoying some fine form with six goals already this season.

The Mirror claim both Premier League clubs are looking to secure Trotter for £2m but it seems to be Southampton who are most keen after boss, Nigel Adkins revealed that he hopes Trotter could add some strength to the Saints midfield. Adkins also signed the 24 year old when at Scunthorpe.

Fulham are believed to have sent scouts to run the rule over Trotter at the weekends 4-1 victory at Nottingham Forest where Trotter opened the scoring.

Trotter has 19 goals in 84 appearances for Millwall since his switch from Ipswich Town in 2010 and finished last season with seven goals – an amount he is just one off already this campaign.

Strength Of Character

Forced to bide his time on the sidelines as a result of injury, having featured in Fulham's last three matches Ashkan Dejagah is happy to be finally playing his part.

And the 26-year-old has impressed in those three outings, his stinging strike in the defeat of Aston Villa led to Chris Baird's winner, while on Saturday he provided the perfect pass for Sascha Riether to drill across the Everton goalmouth for Steve Sidwell to sweep home.

"It's just great to be out there and involved in games," said Ashkan to fulhamfc.com. "It was a very difficult start for me, but thankfully that is behind me now. I feel fit and, although I probably need a few more games to catch up properly, I'm getting stronger every week.

"The Manager knows what I can bring to the Team and, early on, he said that he thought I could provide many assists – he wants me to make a difference in the final third. Obviously I can do a lot more, but it's been nice to be involved in some of the goals lately, albeit in a very small way."

Direct, skilful and hard-working, the Iran international looks set to become a useful outlet with his appearances from the bench catching the eye in recent weeks. Comfortable on either flank, although arguably more effective down the right, the player is an undoubted threat.

"It's been a good couple of weeks for me, but most importantly the Team has been doing well," he said. "We started the week in seventh place, which is really good. When you consider the fact we have also been a little unlucky, perhaps we could be even higher right now.

"If you look at the table, we're only two points off Everton in fourth place. But I don't think we should be too hard on ourselves because I think it's best to look at the positives. We're playing some really good football, scoring goals and getting points.

"We have good momentum at the moment and we want to keep that for as long as possible. We have some tough fixtures coming up, but in honesty, they are all difficult games in this league. I think we can do well though."

Sidwell's late strike on Saturday rescued a point for the Whites – a performance Dejagah insists underlined the character of Martin Jol's side.

"Everton probably should have won the game, but as we all know, football doesn't always work out like that," added Ashkan. "I'm sure they [Everton] will consider themselves unlucky, but we've been in that same position this season, losing points when we should have taken more.

"Having conceded late goals in recent weeks, it was nice to get one for ourselves. I think it was a very important point, we worked extremely hard for it. Okay, at 2-1 Everton had chances to go further in front with Mark Schwarzer making two or three really good saves. But we kept pushing right until the end, and thankfully we were rewarded with a late equaliser.

"Everton are a really good side, they have been one of the best so far. They have some very good players and they made life uncomfortable for us at times. Some teams might have rolled over or caved in under the pressure, but we kept our heads and kept the belief that we could take something – for me, that shows a lot of character.

"We know that we can play good football, and with the spirit that we showed, that is a great mix. This Team has many strengths and we want to build on what we have done so far."

Former Manchester United Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar Taking Ajax Director Role

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is joining the board of another of his old clubs, Ajax, as a director.

According to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, Van der Sar has responded positively to Ajax's approach and will take a spot on the side's supervisory board as a director.

Van der Sar was first approached about a year ago, but at that time felt it was still too soon for him to take the leap into a football administration role.

However, following the completion of his International Master of Sport Management course at the Johan Cruyff Institute, the former goalkeeper has given the green light to taking up the job.

The 42-year-old represented Ajax between 1990 and 1999, establishing himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in world football at the Dutch giants.

Van der Sar picked up four Eredivisie titles, three Dutch Cups, one UEFA Cup and one Champions League, amongst numerous other accolades, during his spell with the club.

He left Ajax to join Juventus in 1999, before leaping over to England to sign for Fulham in 2002.
From there, Van der Sar agreed to sign for Manchester United in 2005 and quickly established himself between the sticks at Old Trafford.

In a spell spanning six years at the Red Devils, Van der Sar added to his medal collection by winning four Premier League titles, two League Cups and the Champions League once again in 2008.

U18s Draw Boro In FA Youth Cup

Fulham's Under-18s have been drawn at home to Middlesbrough in the FA Youth Cup Third Round.

The fixture must be played before Saturday 15th December and is set to take place at Motspur Park. Further details will be released in due course.

Last season, the Under-18s were beaten 2-1 by Burnley in the Quarter-Finals of the competition.
