Fulham boss wishes star man was younger

Giorgos Karagounis, Fulham. Picture: Adam Davy/EMPICS

Martin Jol has lauded the impact of Greek veteran Giorgos Karagounis but has bemoaned the player's age, hinting it could hinder his contractual ambitions at Fulham.

The 35-year-old arrived on a free transfer from Panathinaikos last summer and has been a huge help with Fulham's youngsters throughout.

Also Jol conceded after Fulham's 1-0 win over league rivals Stoke City that Karagounis has been extremely influential in his side's play this campaign.

"Giorgos (Karagounis) is not the youngest at 35 but we have got some time but I miss him every game I play the other players," said the Dutchman.

"Last week I was a bit annoyed that he played 70 minutes for the Greek national side (against Switzerland) and that is not what you want, so I played Emmanuel Frimpong instead.

"But against Stoke I knew that we needed someone, who could play and make us tick in midfield and I think he did that."

Against the Potters, Karagounis produced a masterful performance that belied his years as he completed 67 of the 70 passes he attempted.

For 82 minutes, the Euro 2004 winner jockeyed, harried and hustled to put real pressure on Stoke in the middle of the pitch.

Jol believes the midfielder's showing against Tony Pulis' team emphasises how much playing for Fulham means to the Greek player.

"I don't have to convince 90 per cent of my players because they want to play here (at Craven Cottage).

"So, if we feel the moment is right then we will sit down and offer Karagounis a new contract."

Dalla Valle Makes Molde Move

Fulham striker Lauri Dalla Valle has joined Norwegian side Molde on a permanent basis, the Club announced on Monday evening.

Along with Alexander Kačaniklić, 21-year-old Finnish forward Dalla Valle joined the Whites in August 2010 as part of the deal that took Paul Konchesky to Anfield.

During his stint in SW6, Finland Under-21 international Dalla Valle spent time on loan at AFC Bournemouth, Dundee United, Exeter City and, most recently, Crewe Alexandra.

Meanwhile, two players have made their way back to Craven Cottage following recent loan spells. Jesse Joronen returns from Cambridge United, while Richard Peniket's temporary spell at AFC Telford United has also come to an end.

Fulham's Midfield Revival

Giorgos Karagounis and the rest of the Fulham midfield have, despite age, revitalized a seemingly dire situation into a reliable unit.

It wasn't long ago that Fulham fans were bemoaning a midfield which to describe as "thin" would be generous beyond recognition. Moussa Dembele and Clint Dempsey were no longer an asset on the Fulham FC books, Mahamadou Diarra's injury left a gaping hole in front of the back 4, and Danny Murphy's ability to dictate the pace and direction of play in the center of the pitch was a role left unfulfilled.

Fast forward to now. The club has picked up 7 points in their last 4 matches, and while there is still an obvious gap in the creativity department, Martin Jol has figured out how to position his players to utilize each one's best attributes and scrape by despite the missing cog between midfield and striker.

More importantly, he's taken rusty old parts and shined them up like new to revitalize careers.

It's already been mentioned numerous times here how Steve Sidwell's career has flourished once again now that the Dutchman has moved special one Iniesta a touch further back and charged him with running the defensive midfield department. Since Diarra's transfer to the physio room, Sidwell has performed admirably, and one could argue the knee injury to the Ghanan is one of the better things to happen to Sidwell's career. Sidwell's made 76 tackles this season, which is up there for most of anyone at any position in the Premier League.

Speaking of rusty old parts, Martin Jol plucked Giorgos Karagounis off the free transfer market from Panathinaikos and has turned the 35 year old into Danny Murphy 2.0. Even Jol admitted, "Giorgos is not the youngest at 35 but I miss him every game I play the other players." In a sense, Jol admits Karagounis has played his way into the starting lineup, not just by what he brings when he plays, but what the team misses when he sits. More gaffer on the Greek, "against Stoke I knew that we needed someone, who could play and make us tick in midfield and I think he did that." Seriously think to yourself, when was the last time Fulham fans have been able to say that about a midfielder? Hasn't been since Danny Murphy.

Karagounis's performance in the Stoke match was fantastic. 67/71 passing (94%!), and not only was he spot on, he distributed his passes in a way that kept the Stoke defenders completely off guard. 22 forward passes, 26 backwards passes, and 23 square passes. With that kind of distribution, it's obvious Karagounis was running the offense, deciding where the next attack would come from. Check out his dashboard:

The Greek's heart, desire, and most of all work rate are second to none, and it's obvious by this dash. Look how all over the pitch he was! He was concentrated a bit on the left simply because that's the side of the midfield he played on (Sidwell was on the other) but he ended up just about everywhere. In fact, Karagounis was involved in 3 of the top 4 highest passing combinations in the match. He sent it to John Arne Riise 17 times, to Ruiz 13 times, and got the ball from Hangeland on 11 occasions.

And when needed, Chris Baird has filled in admirably, using his skills as a defender in conglomeration with pinpoint passing, which is the theme under Martin Jol's possession scheme. Passing success this season as a whole: Baird: 84%, Sidwell: 85%, Karagounis: 91%, Diarra: 90%, Frimpong: 90%, Richardson: 86%. For the type of game Jol likes to play, those numbers are perfect fits.

The wing play has been fantastic as well recently. Damien Duff just got his new contract (and deservedly so) and once again has shown quality on touch. His 7 assists are his highest single-season total since his Chelsea days, and we're only in February. In addition, 4 of those assists have come in his last 9 matches, which shows he didn't pad his assist stats early in the season when Fulham were banging in goals left and right. They have come more so since the goals have somewhat dried up for the team.

On the other end, Ashkan Dejagah has impressed in his last few starts. The Iranian has struggled to stand out in his first season in the Premier League, but most recently against Stoke, he was fantastic on the offensive end. He created 5 chances, and completed 91% of his passes (40/44), including 22/26 in the attacking third. He provided linkup play on the right side, noted by the fact that Sascha Riether passed to Dejagah 14 times, good for the 2nd most effective passing combination in the match.

While the situation isn't ideal, and there's still a long way to go, the overall state of Fulham's midfield isn't as dire as was once thought. Though reinforcements have been brought in in the forms of Emmanuel Frimpong and Urby Emanuelson, just about the time they've gotten here the players already in place have stepped things up. Once Diarra returns, Martin Jol is going to have a real selection situation on his hands. Against the next 4 opponents Sunderland, Chelsea, Tottenham, and QPR, the midfield will become even more important, hopefully these guys can keep up their good form or it could be even more of a tough stretch than it already looks.

Aston Villa U21s 0 Fulham U21s 2

Kit Symons' Under 21s overcame in-form Aston Villa with a resolute performance bookended with goals from Omri Altman and Cauley Woodrow.

The Young Whites travelled to Hinckley United's De Montford Park to face a Villa team who had secured back-to-back victories in the second stage of the Barclays Under 21 Premier League.

With two draws and two defeats from their first four matches, Symons' Team were determined to get off the mark with a victory and they made the best possible start.

Nine minutes were on the clock when Israeli striker Altman's smart footwork in the Villains' penalty box created space for himself to fire past home goalkeeper Bradley Watkins.

In a closely-contested first half, Altman had the opportunity to double his tally on the quarter hour but this time Watkins was equal to his half volley, as the Whites consolidated their lead heading into half-time.

The home team's first real sight at goal arrived on the hour mark when Andras Steiber dragged his strike across the face of First Team back-up keeper Neil Etheridge's goal.

Whites substitute Muamar Tankovic soon made his presence felt with a shot which cannoned back off Aston Villa's crossbar and, sensing that time was running out, Villa were forced to open up and push forward in search of a leveller.

A well-organised Whites rearguard ensured the opportunity for an equaliser never arrived and our forward line eventually seized their chance to double the lead in the closing moments.

Tankovic burst forward and put the ball on a plate for Woodrow to notch a poacher's strike from close range, leaving Symons delighted to seal a hard-fought victory, albeit late on.

"We could have had the victory wrapped up a bit sooner but I was really pleased with the overall performance," Symons told fulhamfc.com

"It was a strong start and a well-taken goal by Omri. We played a lot narrower than usual, without any natural width in the team, but we had a few words at half-time.

"The second half was much better and [Villa Under 21s Manager] Gordon Cowans came over to me and said it was a well deserved victory, which means a lot coming from somebody like him.

"Neil Etheridge hardly had a shot to save all game but 1-0 is always a dangerous scoreline. My only gripe is that we should have put it to bed a bit sooner but I'm pleased we managed to get that second goal and see it out."

Fulham: Etheridge; Passley, Kavanagh, Grimmer, Briggs; Islamovic, Minkwitz, Smith, Christensen; Altman, Woodrow. Subs: Joronen, Tankovic, Sambou, Arthurworrey.

Former Liverpool striker leaves Fulham

Fulham striker Lauri Dalla Valle has joined Norwegian side Molde on a permanent deal, the Whites have confirmed.

The Finland Under-21 international joins Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side after failing to make a first-team appearance at Craven Cottage.

He made a move to London from Liverpool in 2010.

Fulham U18s 5 Chelsea U18s 0

Goals from Muamer Tankovic (2), George Williams, Moussa Dembele and Pat Roberts secured an emphatic win for the Under-18s over local rivals Chelsea at Motspur Park on Saturday.

Stephen Arthurworrey had already hit the post with a header when Tankovic opened the scoring, bundling home after Roberts' effort had hit the bar.

And Tankovic and Fulham doubled the advantage shortly after when the Swede capitalised on a mistake by the Chelsea keeper to fire home from just inside the area.

Roberts was involved again as he set up Williams for a tap-in in the second half, before Dembele made it four from close range after another slick team move.

With the final whistle approaching, Roberts got the goal his performance deserved as the Under-18s maintained their 100 per cent record in the Elite Group.

Fulham loanee Richard Peniket leaves Telford
Fulham loanee Richard Peniket has announced his departure from AFC Telford United at the end of his first month at the New Bucks Head.

Peniket confirmed on Twitter that his loan spell with the Blue Square Premier outfit has not been renewed.

The 19-year old frontman joined the Bucks on a one-month loan at the end of January and played the last game of that deal on Saturday in the 2-1 defeat to Newport County.

Bucks manager Mark Cooper had said he would discuss the possibility of extending the move.

But Peniket tweeted: "Really enjoyed loan at Telford, hope they stay up for the fans and the lads."

Martin Jol confident Sascha Riether will stay at Fulham when loan ends

Sascha Riether: Fulham want to keep the on-loan full-back

Martin Jol is confident Sascha Riether will be happy if Fulham take up their option to keep the full-back at Craven Cottage beyond this season.

Riether joined Fulham on a season-long loan from Colognelast summer and he has made 30 appearances in all competitions, missing just one game in the Premier League.

Fulham have first option to retain the 29-year-old and Jol reiterated his intention to ensure Riether is part of his squad next season.

"Sascha is a fans' favourite," Jol told Deutsche Pressagentur. "He is the right-back in my starting XI.

"He runs, he works and he has a good view of situations. I am glad to have him at this club.

"We possess an option [to buy him]. If we are to exercise it, he will have to remain at our club. But if he is not happy, we would have to talk then.

"But I really don't think that this is the case with him. I think he feels fine being a first-team regular with us."

Illness forced Riether to miss the 0-0 draw at Norwich City earlier this month when he was replaced by January signing Stanislav Manolev, but he returned to the team for last Saturday's 1-0 win over Stoke City.

Martin Jol Wants Me To Bring Creativity To Fulham Says Urby Emanuelson

New Fulham signing Urby Emanuelson has revealed that manager Martin Jol wants him to add more creativity to the Cottagers.

Emanuelson arrived at Craven Cottage last month on a loan deal until the end of the season from AC Milan.

The former Ajax man had flourished in Italy until losing his first team spot earlier this season, in a situation he admits took him firmly by surprise.

Emanuelson was quick to choose a move to Fulham, telling Inside Futbol that: "I don't see Fulham as a step back. A step back would have been to spend the rest of the season on the bench."

And the talented Holland international revealed that Jol has already told him what he expects him to add to the Fulham side, with creativity being key.

"Tactically speaking, Jol has asked me to bring more creativity to the team, but at the same time I must take care of my defensive duties and keep the team compact", Emanuelson explained.

"That's fine by me, I am an all-round player and I have always considered my versatility to be one of my strongest points.

"Playing a key role both in the defensive and the attacking phase is the same thing I did at Milan."

Emanuelson is aware that he will encounter differences in England compared to Italy though, although he actually feels he may enjoy the main differentiating aspect more than the frustrating parts of Serie A.

"Football in England is faster", he said.

"Moreover, the referees are more tolerant, while sometimes in Italy it is frustrating to see the game stopped every minute because of a foul."

Good post on Kara but I have to be pedantic and point out that Diarra is Malian, not Ghanaian.

Berbatov proves he paints a pretty picture both on and off the field as he reveals set of impressive sketches

Dimitar Berbatov has shown it is not just the crowds he is drawing this season by revealing a touch of artistic flair.

The mercurial Bulgarian is clearly as effortlessly talented with a pencil as he is with his feet as he has produced a series of stunning caricatures.

Posted on his Facebook page are a set of sketches of famous celebrities which are just as eye-catching as his stunning volley last weekend.

And just like his technique on the pitch his portraits are anything but sketchy.

Scroll down to see the draw specialist's work and anther surprising talent...

While at former club man Manchester United the unique talent admitted he like to draw his team-mates.
'Whatever I see, I can draw,' he said.
'I have done a few caricatures of the lads and I think they liked them.'

Writing to his fans on Facebook the 32-year-old said: 'When I see something on the web and I like it, I try to draw it. In this case one of my favorite hip hop artists Snoop Dogg. If u like it, I'll put up some more'
And, clearly satisfied with the response he kept his word and continued to churn out the pictures.
It must be good to know that he has another talent to draw upon.

Touch of class: Dimitar Berbatov shows off his drawings

And Sportsmail can reveal another blossoming artistic talent in former Wolves' defender Jody Craddock.

The English centre back has expressed a desire to go into full-time painting when he retires, and on this evidence he should.

The future's bright: Jody Craddock pictures with his portrait of Wolves goalscoring legend Steve Bull

The Queen and I: Craddock painted this to celibrate the Jubilee

Wonderkid: The defender produced this aged just 11

Stoke's Robert Huth has been charged with violent conduct following an incident during Saturday's Barclays Premier League game at Fulham.

The Football Association this afternoon confirmed the defender would face action following a clash with Fulham counterpart Philippe Senderos.

The incident was not seen by the match officials at Craven Cottage - but was caught on video.

Huth has until 6pm on Wednesday to respond to the charge.

Dimitar Berbatov's goal was enough to settle a scrappy contest.

Stoke had been lucky to not be reduced to 10 men midway through the first half after Steven Nzonzi, who had taken a knock on the nose in an earlier collision with Berbatov, was booked for shoving Bryan Ruiz in the face.

Fulham midfielder suffers injury setback

FULHAM star Mahamadou Diarra faces a battle to play again this season.

Boss Martin Jol this week admitted the Mali midfielder has suffered another setback in his recovery from a niggling knee problem.

The 31-year-old picked up the injury on international duty in September, which kept him out for almost two months.

Diarra has only featured five times since, the last of those appearances coming against Spurs at the beginning of December.

The former Real Madrid star was forced to pull out of the Africa Cup of Nations after being assessed by the Mali medical staff.

And Jol admits Diarra is nowhere near a return to action.

"Diarra is still not right," said the Dutchman.

"He will need quite a while to come back, hopefully before the end of the season.

"He had an operation, looked better and then had a rest and it was even more painful.

"Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will know more."

The Rufus Brevett Column

We've just had the one game since my last column and I must say that it was a deserved win against Stoke City at the weekend. It was a difficult one because we know what Stoke are about; they're very physical and I said before the game that Fulham would have to win the battle before the football took over.

And we got stuck in, we didn't get bullied, and when the football did take over it was a deserved victory. I think Martin Jol said that he was a little bit disappointed we didn't score more goals, so that just shows how well we did.

I played for Tony Pulis so I know what he's about. I know the kind of football he plays and what he says to his players so it was very pleasing for Fulham to come away and have won so convincingly. Like I said, it's just a little bit disappointing that they didn't score more goals, but it's a valuable three points nonetheless.

The goal we did score, though, was something special from Dimitar Berbatov. I haven't seen many better goals than that recently, although there were a few decent ones over the weekend, to be fair! The way it came out of the air, he checked over his shoulder to see where the Stoke player was and then put it in the top corner. The technique was sublime.

We may not have collected maximum points, though, had it not been for Mark Schwarzer and his fine save from Jonathan Walters' penalty. Schwarzer's been very reliable all season – he's still a fantastic goalkeeper and when he's called upon you know that he's going to do his job and do it well.

There were a couple of nice moments in the match that demonstrated the camaraderie in the squad. Firstly when Berbatov and his teammates embraced Jol in celebration after the goal, and then when Schwarzer and his defenders had a group hug at the final whistle. I think it just shows what the win meant to the players.

They have gone through a bit of a sticky patch but that was a big three points from a difficult game and it just showed how much it meant to them to get the result. That team spirit shows that everyone is fighting for each other and it was a good, all-round team performance. Berbatov and Schwarzer took the headlines but, as a team, I think it would be unfair to pick players out for special praise because it was such a difficult game on paper, but everyone turned up and put a shift in.

Next up is a trip to Sunderland on Saturday and I think it is a good time to play the Mackems as they've lost their last three matches. They're on 29 points, so if Fulham can get a result then that will push us further away from them. When a team's going through a bad patch, it's always a good time to play them but the Barclays Premier League is so difficult and there are no easy teams, as such, so it's going to be another difficult game. I expect it'll be a full house there at Sunderland and their crowd is very loud so it's going to be another tricky match but I'm sure that Fulham can go there and come away with something.

It's also a chance to make amends for the 3-1 defeat by Sunderland at the Cottage earlier in the season. When you look at that match, I think that's almost when the slide started really, because that was a game where we were at home – where we're strong - but Sunderland went there and got a result. So it will be nice if we can go to Wearside and turn the tables and get a result of our own.

Looking at the season, we started really well and we were looking at maybe a top six or seven finish in the league but then we had a bit of a dip. If we can end the campaign anywhere above 10th I think that can be considered a reasonable position, especially considering the slide that we had.

Now we're on the back of some strong performances and results, hopefully we can kick on - there's no reason why we can't. We've got a couple of tasty games coming up with the likes of Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur away is always going to be difficult, but everyone's beating each other at the minute in this league. If we can continue playing our game and keep the players fit, then I'm sure they'll put a good shift in between now and the end of the season.

West Ham, Fulham and West Brom eyeing PSG defender

West Ham, Fulham and West Brom are all hoping to bring former Leeds defender Zoumana Camara back to England.

According to reports in France, the Premier League trio are all chasing the 33-year-old, currently playing for PSG.

But Camara has fallen down the pecking order at the mega-rich club and has made only three Ligue 1 appearances this season.

Hamburg are also keen on doing a deal for Camara, who has a reported £8m release clause in his contract but should be available for around half of that in the summer.

But the Frenchman might fancy another shot at English football after his season-long loan spell at Leeds ended in misery.

Camara spent the entire 2003/04 campaign at Elland Road which ended with the Yorkshire club getting relegated from the top-flight.
