Buckingham set to score with £15m Fulham refurb

Grant Prior | Tue 12th March | 8:14

Buckingham Group Contracting is believed to have beaten its rivals to land the £15m contract to revamp and extend Fulham FC's Riverside Stand at Craven Cottage.

The scheme will boost Fulham's capacity by more than 4,000 to 30,000 with extra seats in the stand which backs onto the River Thames.

Sources close to the club told the Enquirer: "The contract race had come down to a final shoot-out between Buckingham and Laing O'Rourke and it looks like Buckingham has won out."

Fulham were granted planning permission for the scheme last summer and WSP are on board as structural consultant.

A start date is yet to be set for construction but Fulham will continue to play at Craven Cottage while work is carried out.

Fulham teammates Alexander Kačaniklić and David Stockdale went head to head on Monday evening as their respective loan sides Burnley and Hull City faced off in the npower Championship.

The pair both played the entire match on a freezing night at Turf Moor, with Stockdale's Hull emerging victorious courtesy of Stephen Quinn's 66th-minute strike.

Kačaniklić went close for the home side on eight minutes when he tried his luck after the ball had found its way to him following a corner. The Sweden international flashed his shot narrowly beyond the angle of post and bar from 18 yards out, though.

Stockdale was never really unduly troubled in the Tigers' goal, with a decent save to deny Ross Wallace in the first half his most testing action of note.

The win for Steve Bruce's charges moves them back up into the automatic promotion places, while the Clarets remain 11th in the league table.

Fulham yet to move for Malian star

Vitoria Guimares have revealed that they are yet to have received an official approach for defender Mahamadou N'Diaye.

The Mali international is a reported target for Fulham, who have sent scouts to watch him on several occasions in recent months.

Their interest has sparked speculation that N'Diaye may be on the move, with a summer switch the most likely outcome.

But, Vitoria say that there has been no contact with any other club regarding the 22-year-old, and they will not make any decisions until the end of the season:

"Formally we have not received any propositions," representatives of the club told Sky Sports.

"It is normal we would look at this at the end of the season."

N'Niaye has seen his reputation sky-rocket in recent times, with a series of notable displays in the Portuguese top-flight and at the Africa Cup of Nations alerting clubs from across Europe to his potential.

After impressing as a youngster in his home nation with Tontien Bamoko, the powerful centre-half moved to Moroccan outfit Wydad Casablanca.

More consistent displays lead to interest from Vitoria, who swooped for his signature in 2010.

At 6ft. 1", N'Diaye has gained a reputation for being a domineering defender, but he matches his physical presence with a sound reading of the game and good pace.

Several players are questionable for the pair of upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Find out who in Americans Abroad.

Fulham standout Bryan Ruiz and Real Betis striker Joel Campbell headline Costa Rica's 23-man roster when it faces the United States' men's national team during this month's CONCACAF World Cup qualifier.

Costa Rica manager Jorge Luis Pinto also included Real Salt Lake forward Alvaro Saborio and Everton defender Bryan Oviedo ahead of their match against the United States on Mar. 22 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.

USA goalkeeper Tim Howard is likely will miss the Americans' World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica after suffering two broken bones in his back. Aston Villa's Brad Guzan is likely to take over in goal in what would be his first qualifiers in four years.

The Americans lost 2-1 at Honduras last month in their opener of the final round of qualifying in North and Central America and the Caribbean, with new central defenders Geoff Cameron and Omar Gonzalez struggling in front of Howard. Costa Rica, meanwhile, has one point in World Cup qualifying thus far after playing Panama to a 2-2 draw in February.

The top three nations in the finals, which also include Jamaica and Panama, advance to the 32-team field at next year's tournament. The No. 4 team goes to a playoff for another berth, likely against New Zealand.

Murphy at Fulham Works for Both Parties

The main Fulham related rumour has been Danny Murphy's possible return to the Cottagers, not as a player but in coaching role to join the backroom staff. The ex-Fulham captain, who created more chances than any other English player last season, was stripped of his captaincy and has been rumoured to cancel his contract with Blackburn Rovers.

For now it merely remains as speculation, but the possibility is encouraging when you consider his ability, style and opinions on the game. Shortly after England's penalty shoot-out elimination to Italy at Euro 2012, there was a very insightful piece on ESPNFC relating to Murphy's thoughts on Roy Hodgson's long-term approach, Fulham's famed Europa League run and his own views on football tactics. Thankfully I bookmarked the link and it's here:

As a 4-3-3 man, Murphy highlights the importance of an extra midfielder in a team; whether a deep-lying distributor or second-striker who can defend as a midfielder, he believes it brings fluidity, provides an edge against an opposition and is the fundamentals of a modern football team. His priority of possession-based football over tempo is what identified him as a player, and it seems he will continue this in a coaching role.

At the time of Murphy's departure at Fulham, it was seen as a step forward, as Martin Jol was to add a new dimension with Mousa Dembele's complete ability utilized in the heart of midfield. Unfortunately, Jol had to take another step back, when the Belgian playmaker joined Spurs and the brief resurgence was added by the old footballing romantic Giorgos Karagounis.

If the opportunity is there, Fulham should snap him up immediately; he has all the signals to become a great manager one day, and thinking short-term, Fulham can benefit from his contributions in a coaching role. The fact Murphy already knows his tactical identity suggests he could swiftly progress forward. Learning from the experienced Martin Jol as the understudy could also be invaluable.

While Fulham play just two matches in March, the player related news and rumours have been expectedly quiet, however this possible rumour has certainty been refreshing. It totally makes sense if Danny Murphy was to make a sensational return to Fulham in a totally new adventure.
