WE DON'T NEED SCOTT BLOODY PARKER.

The Scott Parker question.

Interesting (and instructive) they way in which this bloke arouses diametrically opposed views on this board.

He exemplifies what I call the Skill v Sweat debate among fans of English football and what they look for in a fotballer. (I know this is an unfair choice of words, and shows where my feelings lie, but you get the general drift.)

I quite admire Scott Parker, a decent, honest footballer who (rather like Steve Sidwell) sometimes needs to cover up his skill deficiency with over robust play. He was an effective and often impressive force for West Ham and yet not all West Ham fans were totally distressed at his departure, recognizing that Noble was really the heartbeat of the side. At Tottenham he has been largely adequate, but has, surely, been in decline.

He has the enthusiasm and, perhaps, the inspirational qualities of a Danny Murphy, but lacks anything like the creativity. On a free, he would add little to our present rescources - anything in the region of £4mllion would surely be a retrograde step when our primary requirement is someone who can rapidly change defence into attack.

Shields Gazette says that Sunderland are looking to sign Jozy Altidore.

Others also saying that us, Cardiff, Celtic and Norwich have been watching him as well.

Manchester City have refused to meet the 63m euros (£53.6m) buyout clause for Edinson Cavani, Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has revealed.

My heart bleeds for them. Fancy City being short of money.

From the Beeb:

Liverpool have signed Sevilla forward Luis Alberto on a long-term deal for a fee believed to be £6.8m.

The 20-year-old had been on loan at Barcelona B but the Spanish champions decided against taking up their option on the Spain Under-21 international, allowing Liverpool to step in.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers said: "He has the correct footballing profile and mentality to be a Liverpool player.

"I look forward to working with him to develop his talent."

Alberto made his debut for Sevilla aged 18 in April 2011, but that was one of just seven first-team appearances he made for the club.

The former under-18 and under-19 international played 38 times for Barcelona B last season, scoring 11 goals.

He is set to be joined at Anfield by Simon Mignolet, with Liverpool expected to complete a £9m move for the Sunderland goalkeeper next week.

The Belgium international is expected on Merseyside in the next few days to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of the move.

The Anfield club have already signed Kolo Toure from Manchester City on a free transfer and have a £6.7m deal agreed in principle for Celta Vigo's Iago Aspas which will go through once paperwork has been completed.

Rodgers is also progressing with a move to sign Shakhtar Donetsk's Armenia midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan but there may not be a swift resolution to that transfer with Liverpool facing competition from a number of European clubs.

The 24-year-old has a release clause in his contract, believed to be around £20m, and Liverpool are willing to meet it in an attempt to sign one of European football's most coveted emerging players.

That´s 50 mil the Scousers will be spending. Makes our loose change look so sad.

Has been mentioned a few pages earlier but we should nip in and grab Jonjo Shelvey from their overcrowded midfield.

Could end up signing Henderson if Liverpool manage to get the Armenian fella. Which in my opinion wouldn't be too bad given the right price. He's a good age, English, and would provide some much needed pace and creativity in our central midfield. This could prove to be more costly than out budget though

Southampton are going for some big players this window.
A fee agreed for Wanyama, can't see him going there though.

Liverpool certainly flash the cash - but to what effect is rather open to question. They have an overall loss of £65million in transfer deals over the previous three seasons.
They got a nice wodge of Russian cash for Torres, and will probably clear a few bob on the £25million they shelled out when Suarez leaves these shores, Shelvey was a good deal at £1.8. But there are some stumers to weigh against this (Carroll in:36 out:15, Meireles, Downing, Henderson, Charlie Adam all cost more than they will probably ever be worth) and they have a whole bunch currently on the book on whom (at the most generous interpretation) the jury is still out. I know that Liverpool are too big, important and generally wonderful to ever have serious financial problems - but, on the whole, I think I'd prefer our more careful approach to expenditure.

Henderson turned down a move to us last year as part of the proposed Dempsey deal.

He's more than a decent player, and would have been very good for a club like ours, but he was extremely hyped when Liverpool signed him.

We should go in for Younes Belhanda and Bafetimbi Gomis who are being courted by Villa and Cardiff respectively. Good technical players one a creative midfiled player and one striker.

Not Shelvey and Henderson bothare not good enough. It would be a waste of time and money, considering they're English.

Agree with Belhanda and Gomis over Henderson and Voldemort, but I'd be looking to a different Lyon player too; Gourcuff has barely played this season, has one year left on his contract, and is still just 26. He's out of form, but could be amazing for us. Pipe dreams, I know..

I'm sure someone said about getting some players from Palermo as they were relegated last season. Would anyone fancy Abel Hernandez? Fast of the shoulder type striker... And what would he be valued at do you think?

He's the sort of player who's great on FIFA (pace..) and is still developing. But having only managed 1 goal this season, 10 league goals in the past 3 seasons, and regularly suffers terrible injuries - we'd best avoid him.. I think he'd be available for less than £7mil (transfermkt value him at £3.5m), but I honestly think we could do better. I'd like to see players like Bojan or Rémy on our radar.
