Berbatov-Holtby swap depends on Fulham's Mitroglou deal

The Cottagers will allow their Bulgarian striker to rejoin Tottenham but only if they can finalise a move for Olympiakos' prolific striker, although talks are ongoing

Dimitar Berbatov and Lewis Holtby will only be involved in a swap deal if Fulham can finalise a move for striker Kostas Mitroglou, Goal lunderstands.
Fulham are content for Berbatov to leave Craven Cottage in the next 48 hours for a cut-price fee of around £1.5 million, but only if they can secure a replacement forward.

The west Londoners have been in talks with Olympiakos for Mitroglou but they are still working towards an agreement with the Greek club.

Fulham will continue to negotiate for the prolific centre-forward on Thursday as they assess Tottenham's interest in a swap involving Berbatov and Holtby.

Goal understands Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is open to a return for former White Hart Lane favourite Berbatov, but his enthusiasm is not matched by new manager Tim Sherwood.

Negotiations to take the Bulgarian back to north London stalled on Wednesday, which could partly be explained by the frosty relations between Tottenham and Fulham.

Nevertheless, the Cottagers have registered their interest in taking Holtby on loan until the end of the season.

Holtby's former club Schalke are also interested in re-signing the midfielder, who is a target for the Bundesliga club as they attempt to bolster their team before giving the green light for Julian Draxler to move to Arsenal.

"I'm happy to keep everyone we've got, and if they do move it would be my decision," Spurs manager Tim Sherwood said on Wednesday night.

"[Holtby] comes into that category. I've heard a lot of speculation about him and obviously with the World Cup coming these guys want to play. We won't do anything that isn't right for the club."

Berbatov is settled in London and has privately ruled out a switch to anywhere outside of the capital. However, it is believed that neither Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger or Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho are interested in the Bulgarian, who turns 33 on Thursday, despite their stated need for fresh blood up front.

Tottenham are looking for a replacement for Toronto-bound Jermain Defoe, who will make his White Hart Lane exit on February 28, leaving Sherwood with just two senior strikers in Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado.

Levy was angered at the manner in which Berbatov engineered his £30.75m exit to Manchester United in 2008 but tried to re-sign the striker on deadline day in August 2012 before he committed to Fulham.

Berbatov has not been quite as effective in his second season at Fulham and the west Londoners are keen to sign a more mobile front man.

They have been negotiating for Mitroglou but are unwilling to pay £11m for the 25-year-old, who has scored 23 goals in 25 matches for club and country this season.

Meanwhile, Fulham will allow Adel Taarabt to join AC Milan on loan before the window closes. The playmaker is on loan from QPR but is surplus to requirements at Craven Cottage and a deal has been agreed for him to move to the San Siro.

Taarabt is set to undergo a medical with Milan on Thursday, freeing up a loan space in the Fulham squad for Holtby.

Fulham In Need of Urgent Reinvestment

With two days to go in the transfer window, the next 48 hours could be huge in Fulham's future, with the club sitting in 19th, two points off safety. It's obvious the squad needs reinvestment after being poorly built over the last few seasons.

It seems there will be a major arrival in Kostas Mitroglou, who is reportedly on his way for what looks like a Fulham transfer record. On paper, he looks like what Fulham need – a striker who can put the ball in the back of the net. He has 21 goals in 23 appearances for club and country this season. Dimitar Berbatov has four goals in 18 league appearances, Darren Bent has two goals in 17 league appearances and Hugo Rodallega has failed to score so far this season in his seven league appearances.

If he arrives, it will surely signal the departure of one of them, if you could replace all three, most Fulham fans would be happy. Berbatov frustrates fans with his perceived lack of effort, and you're unlikely to get the best of him in a struggling team. Rodallega just hasn't looked anything like the player he did at Wigan. Bent's confidence also looks shot, he's missed two sitters in his last few matches, even though he was offside against Sheffield United. If his loan was cancelled to free up a space for a domestic loan, it probably would not be a bad thing.

Fulham also really need a left-back. After a promising start under Rene Meulensteen, John Arne Riise has looked past it again in recent weeks. Kieran Richardson doesn't look like a natural left-back, despite a few promising games. Matthew Briggs is still injured. Fernando Amorebieta and Damien Duff have also deputised at left-back this season, and while Amorebieta has impressed there, you wouldn't want to risk someone playing in an unfamiliar position when they are still new to the league. Neil Taylor has been linked with a move to Craven Cottage, and he would be the perfect signing.

A midfielder is also needed, and has been for several seasons now – Mousa Dembele has never been replaced. Ravel Morrison and Mohamed Diame have been touted as targets, and would be perfect. However, it's hard to see West Ham dealing with Fulham after Meulensteen speaking publicly about Morrison wanting a move. Lewis Holtby has also been linked with a move to Fulham, but that would be on loan – and Fulham already have two domestic loan players, so either Taarabt or Bent would have to leave. While Taarabt has shown flashes of brilliance, both players have been disappointing since they arrived in the summer.

It also has to be remembered though that Fulham can only have a 25-man squad. Fulham registered 24 players at the end of the summer transfer window. Bryan Ruiz has since departed and Clint Dempsey has come in, so if Mitroglou does sign, any arrivals after him would have to be a result of departures.

Whites on life support

The crisis at Fulham deepens after the club lurched closer to the precipice following another disappointing performance at Swansea.

Goals conceded for the season to date now stand at 50(!), while Swansea dominated play and had no trouble dealing with what little pressure the Whites managed to exert. This was a very damaging show where skills, cohesion and tactical nous from our boys were largely absent.

The game followed an all too familiar pattern and the team are effectively back to where we were at the start of December. This early into his tenure, if Rene Meulensteen can't find the motivation or produce a system to rejuvenate the troops, Fulham are in serious trouble.

Nobody should have been fooled into thinking a midweek trip to the Liberty Stadium in the depths of winter would be a stroll in the park but here was a game that should have been approached like a cup final.

Swansea were on a run of form even worse than that of Fulham and yet, as Michael Laudrup savoured a confidence-boosting win, he labelled the Cottagers a side "who came to play for a draw," adding "we stepped it up in the second half and got the result."

Why was there such a negative approach, from what was in essence the first eleven? Or are Fulham really now such an ordinary side that the Championship is actually where the club belongs? For a Fulham manager to call up Damien Duff from the bench thinking that he's the man to transform a game ... that is a judgement which depresses me.

With this current set-up, relegation is where Fulham are heading. Even the bookies think so. Except, with 15 games still to contest, history tells us there's time to turn this around. Nobody knows that better than a Fulham follower!

However, over time the writing has been on the wall and this latest surrender only served to underline where changes must happen. Indicative of Fulham's current woes was seeing both forwards withdrawn in the second half.

Dimitar Berbatov has no more interest in donning the white shirt while Clint Dempsey, who is anything but a quitter, simply looks a man past his peak.

We might have seen flashes of the buccaneering Texan of yore had he come back into a half-decent team. Previous managers needed time to bed Dempsey into their system, simply because he's a one-off, but there's not going to be a fairy-tale ending this time around before he flies the coop back to the United States.

In the final days of this transfer window, I pray for Berbatov to be off-loaded, along with Darren Bent and Adel Taarabt. These three are drawing a king's ransom in wages for negligible return.

Nor can Fulham make further domestic loans while Bent and Taarabt remain on the books. If neither has a break clause in their contracts, here is further evidence of shocking management strategies last summer.

This remains a seminal week in Fulham history and while it is not yet over, only decisive moves in the transfer window can right the ship. Spending 20 million pounds now could prevent the loss of 50 million over the next two years, should Fulham drop into the Championship.

Does Shad Khan recognise this? I believe he does, if the strong rumours suggesting Greek striker Kostas Mitroglou is to be signed are genuine.

I am certain Meulensteen will be working right up to the deadline to push through further deals. Ravel Morrison continues to be linked and a quality left-back, a position in which Kieran Richardson turned in another abject performance on Tuesday, is needed.

If Sunday comes round and none of the above has happened, the Fulham faithful can begin preparing for harder times. Dropping a division while 'Arry Redknapp leads his boys in a promotion jig round Shepherds Bush market does not make for an edifying proposition.

Fulham is a team in serious trouble, make no mistake and there will be casualties if relegation follows. Those that go will at least have the consolation of a generous pay out.

Those that remain will simply put away our replica shirts and quietly weep.

Lasse Pens Extension

Fulham Football Club are delighted to announce that Lasse Vigen Christensen has penned a new three-year deal with the Whites.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who made his Fulham debut in our FA Cup with Budweiser clash at Norwich City, will now stay at Craven Cottage at least until the summer of 2017.

Christensen arrived in SW6 in January 2012 as one of Denmark's most promising young players. He was one of the stand-out performers for the Club's Under-21s in 2012/13 and has continued his form this term in the role of captain.

Kostas Mitroglou Signs For Fulham, Turning Down Top Four

How? Why? But mostly HOW?

Kostas Mitroglou: Looks Like He's Turning Down Arsenal For Fulham

Mitroglou en route to London?

Rumour has it that one of Europe's most-wanted strikers could be on his way to the Premier League, more precisely he could be moving to the capital, but to who?

Arsenal? No. Chelsea? No Spurs? No. Fulham? Jesus, it's Fulham. No, really.

According to the Daily Mirror, Greek forward Kostas Mitroglou is 'in talks' with the Cottagers over an £11million switch.

'Pistolero', as he's been nicknamed by the Olympiacos faithful, ended last season on 20 goals and has already bagged 17 times this campaign – which seems to be a far too impressive record to be joining an outfit like Fulham (no disrespect – okay, SOME disrespect)

With an ageing (and smoking) Dimitar Berbatov no longer cutting it or caring, Darren Bent being Darren Bent and Clint Dempsey only there for a quick holiday, Fulham are in desperate need of a goalscorer and Big Rene Meulensteen see's the 25-year-old as the man for the job.

Chances are, mind, a relatively decent team will swoop in and sign Mitroglou, but for now at least Fulham fans have a reason to be optimistic.

UPDATE: Deal is done. I'm in shock.

Everton and Fulham to find out who has won the race for Sergio Canales TODAY
EVERTON and Fulham should find out today who has won the race for Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales.

Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales [GETTY]
Sources close to the player insist Everton are one of two clubs to have had a bid rejected for the 22-year-old, who seems set to leave before the close of the transfer window.

But Real Sociedad are also pushing hard for Canales, who was one of the hottest properties in Spanish football until injuries knocked back his development.

Sociedad boss Jagoba Arrasate said: "He is a player who interests us, that is free to leave, but we aren't sure in what capacity he can leave, we are watching to see what happens."

Both bids for the player are understood to have been in the region of £3-£4m, which is well short of Valencia's asking price. But the Spanish side could be willing to let Canales leave on loan - with both English clubs interested in exploring that option.

Canales is under contract until 2017 and Valencia met with his agent to discuss their options last night.

A decision is expected today.

A host of Spanish clubs - including Getafe, Malaga and Real Betis - have also expressed an interest in him during this window. But Real Sociedad are in the driving seat should the player decide to stay in Spain, with some reports this week suggesting they are his preferred option.

Tottenham make £1million offer to re-sign Fulham striker Dimitar Berbatov

Tottenham are believed to have made a £1million offer to sign Fulham striker Dimitar Berbatov ahead of the close of the transfer window.

Berbatov, who enjoyed a two-year spell at White Hart Lane before leaving in 2008, has become frustrated with life at Fulham and reportedly asked to leave earlier this month.

Arsenal and West Ham have since been linked with his services, but London rivals Spurs have moved ahead in the race after making a £1m offer for his services.

According to reports, Tim Sherwood was persuaded to make the offer after chairman Daniel Levy was told of Berbatov's desire to return to north London.

The Bulgarian has five-months left on his contract with Fulham – and Spurs want to take that over by offering him a deal until the end of the season.

The transfer could signal the start of some late business between the two clubs, with Fulham keen on signing midfielder Lewis Holtby and back-up goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes from Tottenham.

Taarabt joins Milan

QPR forward Adel Taarabt is joining Italian giants AC Milan on loan for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old Morocco international joined Fulham on a season-long loan from relegated Rangers last summer but has made just 16 appearances in all competitions for the Cottagers. A statement from AC Milan read: "Adel Taarabt has landed on a private jet to (Milan's) Linate airport. "In order for his transfer to the Rossoneri club to be made official, we must wait for the necessary procedures to take place." Former Lens and Tottenham playmaker Taarabt says he is looking forward to linking up with former Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli at the San Siro. "I am honoured to be able to play in the best club in the world," Taarabt told www.acmilan.com. "I have spoken to (AC Milan coach Clarence) Seedorf and we are both really happy. "I am a striker and I like to play behind the forwards. "I don't know personally Balotelli but I know very well who he is and it will be great to play with him."

Kvist Joins On Loan

The Club is delighted to confirm the signing of William Kvist on loan until the end of the season.

Kvist arrives from German outfit VfB Stuttgart, and Fulham have an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer.

A central midfielder by trade, the 28-year-old began his career in his native Denmark with FC Copenhagen, where he featured in the UEFA Champions League alongside Brede Hangeland.

After six years with Copenhagen, he moved to Stuttgart in the summer of 2011 where he once again tasted European football, this time in the Europa League.

Kvist has more than 40 caps for his national side and was part of the Denmark squad at both the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championships.

"I'm very pleased to have got the deal done and I'm looking forward to contributing to this fantastic Club," William told fulhamfc.com. "Of course I've heard a lot of good things from Brede and it's been a target of mine to come here so I'm delighted to be here really.

"The Premier League is the biggest league in the world. I've played in the Bundesliga which is also a really nice league, but this is the biggest challenge you could get as a footballer – this is the motherland of football. When I was a child I used to just watch English football on television so it's amazing being here.

"I just had my first training session and it was perfect. It was good to get to know the guys and talk to René Meulensteen about the tactical concepts and what his ideas are so I'm very much looking forward to my time here.

"Of course I would like to be involved against Southampton but the Head Coach will see if I'm fit and able to play – I think I am, although I haven't played for Stuttgart this year, but I'm feeling fit and motivated."

Fulham set to make triple swoop

Fulham have lodged a joint-bid for Manchester United midfield duo Ryan Tunnicliffe and Larnell Cole.

Tunnicliffe, 21, has been on loan at Ipswich Town this season where he has flourished under Mick McCarthy, but the Portman Road boss knows he is powerless to stop the deal and is now moving for a replacement. Cole is a player that Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen rates highly from his time as a coach and assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford. The 20-year-old midfielder is yet to make the first-team breakthrough despite scoring a hat-trick in the semi-final and two more in the final of the Under-21 Premier League competition last season. Meanwhile, reports in Scandinavia claim Fulham are set to win the race for Stuttgart defender William Kvist. West Ham and Evian have also been strongly linked with the Denmark international, but he has opted to link up with the Cottagers.

More on Spurs Holtby!

Late yesterday, the inference was being bandied about that Spurs and Fulham might be about to conduct a piece of transfer business.

The suggestion was that Fulham would send Dimitar Berbatov to White Hart Lane and that the Spurs midfielder Lewis Holtby would be coming the other way.

Overnight, the speculation has grown with it being reported that Holtby, due to a lack of regular first team football, is desperate to leave Spurs before the transfer window closes at 23:00 hours tomorrow, something the 23 year-olds agent has confirmed.

Here at Vital Fulham we reckon this is one piece of speculation you need to keep an eye on, we just have a gut feeling about it.

Club Record Bid Accepted!

Yesterday the Grapevine was alive with the intimation that Fulham were closing in on the Olympiakos striker Kostas Mitroglou.

This morning all the indications are that Fulham are about to break their club record transfer fee to bring the player to Craven Cottage.

Reports are surfacing that Olympiakos have accepted a £12,400,000 million bid from Fulham for the 25 year-old who is, so we`re told, in London for talks.

The intimation is that Mitroglou is in London to thrash out personal terms on a rumoured four year deal.

If talks go well, there is a slim chance he could feature in the eighteen man squad for the vital home against Southampton this weekend.
