McInally: Magath exactly what Fulham need

Former Bayern Munich striker Alan McInally claims life at Fulham won't be a holiday camp under Felix Magath but added the German could be just what they need to avoid the drop.

Magath, Bayern Munich manager between 2004 and 2007, took charge of his first Fulham game on Saturday, earning a 1-1 draw away to West Bromwich Albion.

McInally, who played for Bayern between 1989 and 1992, believes that result was a good start but survival will still be very difficult.

He told Sky Sports: “Whether he's going to be a success or not is a tough one to call because when you're bottom of the league it's difficult to get results.

“He started with a good point at West Brom so we'll have to wait and see what comes but he'll be changing a few attitudes and it certainly won't be a holiday camp there.

“I heard someone complaining that he had the team in on a Sunday but I don;t ever remember getting a Sunday off at Bayern Munich.

“Whether you played on a Saturday or not you trained on the Sunday and you get used to it.

“You get fitter, you get better, you get more professional and if that's what he's going to bring in at Fulham then maybe that's exactly what they need.”

Magath won three Bundesliga titles as a manager in Germany – two with Bayern Munich and one with Wolfsburg – as well as leading West Germany to the 1980 European Championships.

He took from Rene Meulensteen after just three months in charge, with Fulham bottom of the Premier League after a run of six games without a win, including five defeats.
