USA: Bill Clinton digs the shoes the US squad will wear at official functions. "You guys dress sharp," he reportedly told Fulham's Clint Dempsey as the squad met the former US president and Barack Obama, the incumbent, at the White House. Dempsey disagreed about the pale loafers — "I thought we looked a little silly" — but kept his thoughts to himself. Clinton apparently also admired Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu's bling-bling watch. "It's really sparkly," striker Jozy Altidore explained. "It has a lot of diamonds." Precisely the sort of accessory not to be taking to crime-ridden Johannesburg.

The US, who faced Turkey last night, fly to South Africa today.

Aston Villa and Birmingham City battle it out to land Bobby Zamora

May 30 2010 by Andy Walker

ASTON Villa could be set to gain revenge on Birmingham City for missing out on Nikola Zigic by snaring Bobby Zamora.

Both Second City clubs - as well as Sunderland - are in the race for the Fulham star.
Bobby Zamora

Blues have been interested for some time but are yet to make a move due to concerns over the seriousness of the achilles injury that ruled the striker out of Fabio Capello's preliminary World Cup squad.

Villa and the Black Cats have also now expressed an interest and Martin O'Neill appears to be the favourite to land the 29-year-old.

Zamora is eager to play European football again next season having seen his stock soar during Fulham's stunning Europa League campaign.

And that puts Villa in a favourable position as they are the only club out of the interested trio to have qualified for Europe next season.

Villa lost out to Blues in the race for towering Serbian striker Zigic last week, despite an eleventh hour attempt to persuade the 6ft 8in giant otherwise.

But, while Alex McLeish continues to make great strides in the summer transfer market, Villa could get one over Blues by clinching the signing of Zamora.

Barking-born Zamora started has career at Bristol Rovers and has had mixed success during spells at Brighton, Tottenham and West Ham.

Meanwhile, Zamora's Fulham team-mate Paul Konchesky is likely to become a Blues player in the next few weeks.

Blues have already had a £1.5 million bid for the ex-England left-back knocked back by the Cottagers.

However Konchesky, who has one year left on his current deal at Craven Cottage, has indicated to the west Londoners that he does not intend to sign a new contract.

The 29-year-old is believed to be interested in joining the McLeish revolution at St Andrew's and Blues will return with an improved offer sooner rather than later.

Fulham ready to try for £9million McGeady

01:30 PM 28 May, 2010

Fulham Football Club are ready to try for Aiden McGeady.

Roy Hodgson enjoyed another season of progress at Craven Cottage during the 2009-2010 campaign, which led to a place in the UEFA Europa League final.

Although the Londoners were undone by Atletico Madrid in Hamburg, the stock of their club and indeed their manager has shot through the roof in recent months.

Hodgson is now looking to use this to his advantage during the summer weeks, when he plans to take Republic of Ireland international McGeady to Craven Cottage.

The 24-year-old has been a key member of Celtic's setup since debuting in 2004, and has now racked up over 180 appearances for the famous Scottish side.

It is believed Hodgson would have to fork out around £8million for the winger, who has also attracted interest from Birmingham City and, claim Sky Sports, Spartak Moscow.

Fulham's Clint Dempsey scores the winner for the United States against Turkey

The U.S. National Team played their last friendly match against Turkey before leaving for South Africa. The game took place at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The U.S. won the match 2 - 1. The winning goal came from Clint Dempsey in the 75th minute of the match. He was set up very nicely from a great pass from Landon Donovan. Dempsey stormed his way past the Turkey defense to blast a shot by the goalkeeper.

This was an uneven game from the United States. The first half saw Turkey with much more possession. In the 27th minute, Arda Turan scored for Turkey. They really controlled the first half and deserved to be up at the half 1 - 0.

The second half saw a completely different performance from the United States. Many key substitutes in the second half led to a more offensive performance. Jose Torres and Robbie Findley made a big difference helping the U.S. gain possession in the second half.

The U.S. tied the game in the 59th minute. Landon Donovan made a great run and sent a beautiful pass to a wide open Jozy Altidore. Jozy struck the ball into the net and the game was tied 1 - 1.

As I mentioned earlier, in the 75th minute the U.S. took the lead. Landon Donovan again made a nice pass to Fulham's Clint Dempsey.  Clint was inside the penalty box when he struck the winning goal past the Turkey goalkeeper.  He almost scored a second goal very late in the match. He was set up again nicely this time by Michael Bradley. Clint Dempsey's shot this time hit the post. The game ended a little later with a United States  2 - 1 victory.

The U.S. were much more attacking in the second half. Overall, they deserved the victory. The U.S. team leave tomorrow for South Africa.

The U.S play one more friendly match against Australia in South Africa. Fulham players Clint Dempsey and Mark Schwarzer will be on opposite sides in this final warm up before the beginning of the World Cup.

Fulham performance persuades Horley boss to stay

Sunday 30th May 2010

MANAGER Ali Rennie has completed a dramatic U-turn by agreeing to stay on as Horley Town boss just a month after announcing he was stepping down.

In charge of the Combined Counties League Premier Division club for three years, Rennie decided to have a break, but after watching lowly Fulham reach a European final, the Scotsman was inspired to carry on at the New Defence, This Is Surrey Today is reporting.

"A couple of the players and I went to see their match against Hamburg, and while we were there the players convinced me to stay and I had a think about it," Rennie explained.

"Some people may see changing your mind as a sign of weakness, but I think it takes strength to admit you may have been wrong."

Rennie, who can regularly been found attending matches when Horley don't have a game, admits he felt he would miss it.

"I was thinking what if I found I was missing football and wanted to try to get back into it," he said. "Horley is a great club and I really enjoy it there. I spoke to the chairman and he was happy to have me back."

US edge Turkey for happy send-off

Two weeks before they open their 2010 FIFA World Cup™ against England, United States players rallied from a woeful first half for a confidence-boosting 2-1 victory over Turkey on Saturday.

Clint Dempsey took a spot-on pass from Landon Donovan and scored the winning goal in the 75th minute to give the Americans a triumphant sendoff to South Africa after a first half of defensive lapses and spotty communication. Arda Turan's breakaway in the 27th minute put Turkey ahead 1-0 at half-time but Jozy Altidore finished a chip-and-charge play by reserve Robbie Findley to equalize in the 58th minute, setting up Dempsey's decider.

The first half we were all nervous. We showed our character in the way we were able to turn things around. That says a lot about us.Clint Dempsey

"The end-all is that we know we can be behind against a good team and have the intelligence to come back and the ability to play better," Donovan said.

"You could see everyone had more confidence in the second half," Dempsey said. "The first half we were all nervous. We showed our character in the way we were able to turn things around. That says a lot about us."

Dempsey fought off a defender as he ran to the five-meter line, then flicked the finish past Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Demirel and inspire cheers of "We Want England" from US supporters as the final seconds ticked away.

"In terms of what you want out of a send-off game it was great," US coach Bob Bradley said. "Everything that has gone on has put us in good position heading to South Africa."

Picked apart in the first half
US goalkeeper Tim Howard, who made the match's only three saves, hopes he sees nothing like the US defensive woes of the first half against Turkey, whose missed opportunities are unlikely to be duplicated by Fabio Capello's English side on 12 June in Rustenberg.

"It was a a slap in the face what happened. They had too many good chances," said Howard, who plays in England for Everton. "The second half we did a really good job taking charge. We're going to have to play like that in South Africa."

Turkey's Tuncay Sanli, a forward at England's Stoke City, went wide with a five-meter shot in the sixth minute. Turan fired over the crossbar in another point-blank miss and after another Yurkish miss 10 minutes in, Howard ran up to his defenders and screamed his coordination orders. An unguarded Turan finally made the hosts pay but the damage could have been far worse.

It took us too long to figure out. Sometimes you have to get in the right positions. The organisation was not there.Landon Donovan on the first half woes of the US

"It had to be more cohesive. That's something we still have to get better at and we don't have a lot of time to do it," Howard said. "We didn't do a good job of staying tight and bottling it up. We had a not-too-good job of one-on-one defending going on. We needed to work together better."

Donovan was also critical, saying: "It took us too long to figure out. Sometimes you have to get in the right positions. The organisation was not there. In the second half we had a better tempo game and we were able to take advantage of it."

Oguchi Onyewu, in only his second game after a seven-month layoff for a ruptured left knee tendon, and Steve Cherundolo replaced defenders Jonathan Spector and Clarence Goodson to start the second half and Findley and Jose Torres entered as well. "They brought energy," Bradley said. "The whole flow of the game changed."

US aggression was rewarded when Findley chipped the ball away to set up a pass to Donovan that lured Demirel out too far to his left, setting up Altidore's equalizer and the US fightback.

United States 2 Turkey 1: Altidore and Dempsey send warning to England

The United States came from behind to claim a morale-boosting victory over Turkey in their final match before heading to South Africa for the World Cup.
Arda Turan opened the scoring after 27 minutes for the visitors in front of more than 55,000 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Heart felt: Clint Dempsey celebrates after scoring the winner for the United States

But Jozy Altidore netted just before the hour mark to level things up and Clint Dempsey struck the winner 15 minutes from time.
Turkey pressed early on and missed decent chances through Tuncay and Hamit Altintop, before America responded with wayward strikes from Dempsey and Benny Feilhaber.

Turkey's opener came from an American attack, as Jonathan Spector set off on a neat run.
When he was dispossessed, however, it allowed Turan to attack and he was unchallenged as he advanced and struck past Tim Howard.

Both sides could have scored just before the break, but Tuncay's shot was deflected narrowly over and Dempsey could not get on the end of Altidore's dangerous cross.
US coach Bob Bradley made four substitutions at half-time and one of the replacements, Robbie Findley, made an immediate impact.

Ten minutes after the break, he controlled well before shooting wide - then three minutes later he had a hand in the equaliser.

He played in Landon Donovan and the Los Angeles Galaxy striker narrowly avoided Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel, selflessly setting up Altidore to tap home.

Turkey went looking for a winner, but when the goal arrived it came at the other end.
Again Donovan was the architect as, from a short throw, the former Everton man found Fulham striker Dempsey, who controlled well and finished.

Dempsey and Jose Torres narrowly missed chances to add a third for the hosts in the closing moments, but there was still plenty of encouragement for the home fans.
The US have one more warm-up game, against Australia in Roodepoort, before opening their Group C campaign against England.

GERA'S FORMER AGENT IS BANNED

29/05/2010

FULHAM midfielder Zoltan Gera's former agent has been banned from football for six months.

A Football Association Regulatory Commission took away Sam Stapleton's licence for 18 months, with 12 months suspended for two years, and fined him £75,000 after finding him guilty of two breaches of rules.

They ruled that Stapleton acted for Gera in contract renegotiation talks with West Bromwich Albion in 2008 without having a contract with the player.

He then worked for Fulham when they signed the Hungary international later that year, without telling Fulham he had previously helped Gera.

In the course of the hearing it was revealed that West Brom fell out with Gera's registered agent, Serb Vladan Filpovic, after they discovered that a chunk of the transfer fee they paid Ferencvaros for the player in 2004 had been passed on to Filpovic without their knowledge.
