Manager Watch: Fulham boss would be a good fit at Southampton

Odds have been slashed on Felix Magath becoming Southampton's next manager.

When Mauricio Pochettino left Southampton for Tottenham, the majority of the names being linked with the Saints job had a certain ring to them.

Young, European and able to implement an exciting style of play. Murat Yakin, Michael Laudrup and Ronald Koeman were just three examples.

But a new twist in the hunt for Pochettino's replacement has bucked the trend quite significantly. Indeed, Fulham boss Felix Magath - a 60-year-old - is now second favourite to be named Southampton's new coach.

Koeman, of course, is still favourite for the role, while Burnley boss Sean Dyche has moved up to the third in the running. However, the sharp increase suggests there is a definite possibility that German Magath could leave London for the South coast.

The idea makes a lot of sense.

What many clubs often lack after initial success in the Premier League is a long-term strategy. Southampton have done exceptionally since promotion from the Championship but the departure of their manager and striker Rickie Lambert this summer may only be the start of an exodus.

The club are hopeful there will be no more changes and installing Magath as their new boss could help in that process.

Initially feared for his heavy-handed approach to management, the 60-year-old disproved the doubters with a positive performance at Fulham. By the time the Cottagers' relegation was confirmed, many fans had been convinced that appointing Magath earlier would have prevented such a dire outcome.

But it is the German's previous history that suggests he is a good fit at St. Mary's. A double winner with Bayern Munich, Magath has ample experience at the top level, while his time at Fulham will have meant he has tasted the everyday life of a Premier League manager.

Magath is also very focused on promoting youth. Southampton's notorious academy will give him plenty to work with, especially as he handed opportunities to the likes of Moussa Dembele and Cauley Woodrow during his time at Craven Cottage.

After Fulham's run to the FA Youth Cup final, Magath told reporters: "It is a pleasure for me to work with young players. The first thing for me is to look at our academy and look for ones which can join us."

That philosophy will be just as welcome at Southampton.

TROTTA SCORES AGAIN FOR ITALY UNDER-21

Marcello Trotta on the score sheet for Italy Under-21 in friendly win against Montenegro

Marcello Trotta was on target again for Italy Under-21.

The striker, who spent the majority of the 2013/14 season on loan at Brentford from Fulham, came on as an early substitute when Italy Under-21 played Montenegro yesterday, Wednesday June 4.

He scored the fourth goal in a 4-0 win, continuing his fine form at that level.

The 21-year-old has scored four in three training matches and also netted his debut in a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland in a 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championships qualifier in March.

Marcello has two in two official Under-21 internationals for his country.

The Northern Ireland win was Italy's fourth win in six qualifying games.

They are currently third in Qualifying Group Nine with 12 points, a point behind joint leaders Belgium and Serbia with two games remaining, which are to be played in September.

Marcello scored 13 goals for Brentford in 2013/14, helping The Bees to achieve promotion from Sky Bet League One.

Saints and Fulham players feature in England's top three Toulon performers

England came fourth in the recent Toulon tournament, but several players managed to stand out for Gareth Southgate's young side.

England came fourth in the Toulon tournament that finished earlier this week, losing the third place playoff game against Portugal on the same day as Brazil, the only other side to beat Gareth Southgate's men over the 12 days, smashed France 5-2 in the final to defend their title.

Don't let that fourth spot deceive you, England won just one game, against Qatar, and there will be plenty of questions for Southgate and co to ponder with the tournament concluded.

It was England's first appearance at Toulon since 2005, though they do have history in the youth competition, winning it 4 times in 5 years at the start of the 90s, making them the third most successful team to have ever competed after France and Brazil.

Below we put forward three of England's best players from the tournament.

James Ward-Prowse

The team captain and Southampton star was recognised by those at the competition, winning best goal for his stunning free kick against Brazil in England's 2-1 loss and also winning third best player overall. Ward-Prowse has had a great season at Southampton, making a massive 39 appearances under the departed Mauricio Pochettino. There was no other player with his Premier League experience, and he displayed it with several classy performances. May find himself an even more integral player to the Saints next year, and it could even push for full England recognition by the end of the coming season.

Cauley Woodrow

The young striker was brought into Fulham's struggling side at the end of the season, and responded with some decent displays and a goal in the London derby with Crystal Palace on the last day of the season. Woodrow netted early goals against both South Korea and Colombia, ensuring he finished the tournament as England's top scorer having started as a substitute in the first two matches. Is likely to get a lot more football in the Championship next year, and looks a real prospect.

Jake Forster-Caskey

Former Tottenham player Darren Caskey's son, Jake Forster-Caskey has long been regarded as a player with real promise. In Toulon, he featured in every game, hitting a sweetly struck goal against Qatar, and showing plenty of other moments of attacking threat throughout the tournament. The midfielder rejected offers from Premier League sides to sign with Brighton, and went on to make his debut having only just turned 16. This year, as the Seagulls failed at the playoff semifinal stage, has been Forster-Caskey's most involved and most impressive, making his England Under-21 debut and 33 appliances for Brighton.

International Debutants

George Williams and Liam Donnelly made their international debuts for Wales and Northern Ireland respectively on Wednesday.

Williams was a 70th-minute substitute in a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in Amsterdam, while Donnelly also stepped off the bench in the dying moments as Northern Ireland went down by the same scoreline to Chile in a friendly in Valparaiso.

With Wales trailing 1-0 to Arjen Robben's goal, Williams was introduced into the action – and he almost made a dream start to international football.

The winger skipped past three Dutch defenders and only a last-ditch tackle from Ron Vlaar stopped the youngster from letting fly.

Holland doubled their lead soon after, though – Robben crossing for substitute Jeremain Lens to score from close range.

"Young George is a very good player," said Wales manager Chris Coleman. "He's one of those young players that is fearless, so he's prepared to run at the opposition. He's confident and he's earned his performance tonight."

Donnelly came on in the 89th minute for Northern Ireland to make his international bow.

The centre-back's side had held their own for 79 minutes but saw their resistance broken by substitutes Eduardo Vargas and Mauricio Pinilla before Donnelly made his debut late on.

At Under-21 level, Marcello Trotta was on target as Italy defeated Montenegro 4-0 in a friendly.

The 21-year-old striker, who spent the majority of the 2013/14 season on loan at Brentford, came on as an substitute in the 28th minute and later grabbed the fourth goal in injury time.

Aston Villa have signed the former Arsenal and Fulham defender Philippe Senderos.

Senderos, 29, has agreed a two-year deal that will take effect from 1 July.

He becomes the Villa manager Paul Lambert's first signing of the summer, with the move announced prior to Senderos's departure to the World Cup with Switzerland on Friday.

"I'm really delighted to be joining Aston Villa, a great club with such a big history, and for me this is a great step in my career," he said.

"There will be a lot of competition for places with Ron Vlaar, Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker and Jores Okore also very capable Premier League defenders, so it will be up to me to fight for and to earn my place in the team.

"This is a team and a club which wants to do better, I know this, and hopefully we can all develop together and create something special."

"He's played for some top sides and was a big influence in Arsenal's run to the Champions League final in 2006, so we're bringing in a really experienced player who's been there and done it and that will be important for the team," Lambert said. "He'll be a great addition to the group."

Senderos emerged through the youth system at the Swiss club Servette before he agreed to join Arsenal in December 2002.

In 117 appearances for the Gunners, he won an FA Cup medal in 2005, scored four goals and spent loan spells at Milan and Everton before joining Fulham in 2010, making 68 appearances for the Craven Cottage team.

He has been capped 52 times by Switzerland, scoring five international goals.

Hangeland Fall-Out

Yesterday we focused on how Brede Hangeland felt more than a little miffed that over six and a half years` service was ended via e-mail, with Brede leaving the club.

This morning the tabloid press carries a brief article whereby it reproduces a tweet, from Fulham Football Club, that reads,

"Protocol was followed and Brede was notified in the right way."

Really, if that`s the right way to show someone the door then someone at the club needs to discover a backbone!

Magath Fight

Our relegation to the Championship has taken out of the top-flight.

Instead, much to our annoyance, we`ll spend at least next year languishing in the Championship.

However, amidst the turmoil of relegation, Felix Magath gave his word that he would stay to help get us back into the Premier League.

But that hasn`t stopped Southampton from showing some interest in taking the 60 year-old to St Marys.

So far Fulham, quite rightly, have refused Southampton permission to talk to him, hopefully it`ll stay that way!

Premier League clubs 'want Hangeland'

Brede Hangeland has attracted Premier League interest and will decide on his future shortly, his representative has revealed.

The 32-year-old is on the lookout for a new club after Fulham opted to release him from his contract following their relegation from the top flight, despite him having 12 months to run on his deal.

Hangeland was reportedly made aware of his release via email, though Fulham later responded by saying protocol had been followed and the Norwegian was notified in the correct way.

His next destination is as yet unknown, but the likes of West Ham and newly promoted QPR have been linked with his signature.

And Hangeland's representative, Rune Hauge, has confirmed he would like to remain in England and will announce his next move when he returns from holiday.

"There is interest from the Premier League," Hauge told Perform. "But Brede's on holiday. He was on the way to the airport when he got the message (that he had been released).

"It's a little bit difficult now, he has to finish that holiday time and take it from there."

Despite spending six years in London, Hauge insists that Hangeland is happy to play in the Premier League outside the capital - although he is not as yet tempted by a switch overseas.

He added: "No (it does not have to be London), he's interested in any Premier League club. So far, that (moving to Europe) is not a priority.

"At the moment yes (he is only interested in the Premier League). We'll discuss it when he's back from the holiday."

From dear old wiki regarding Hangerlands agent, sounds like a decent fellow, the sort of chap who can be believed

Rune Hauge (born April 23, 1954) is a Norwegian football agent.

In English football, Hauge is best known as the agent who represented John Jensen and Pål Lydersen during their transfers to Arsenal in the early 1990s. This would lead to Arsenal manager George Graham becoming embroiled in allegations that Hauge paid him a £425,000 "bung" to sign the players. Graham was later found guilty by the Football Association after admitting receiving an "unsolicited gift" and was suspended for a year. Before this, Hauge was involved in the signings of two key Manchester United players: Andrei Kanchelskis and Peter Schmeichel.

Hauge was banned from operating as an agent for life by FIFA in 1995, but this was later reduced to two years' suspension of his licence. After he regained his licence, he went on to represent several Norwegian players including Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Steffen Iversen and Eirik Bakke. He was also involved in the transfer of Rio Ferdinand from West Ham United to Leeds United.

In 2005, he was involved in the transfer dispute between Manchester United and Chelsea over John Obi Mikel, claiming (along with others) that he had the right to represent the Nigerian youth.

Hauge's current clients include Blackburn's Norwegian midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen.
