Southampton, West Brom, Stoke, Hull and QPR want former Fulham midfielder

Southampton have joined the race to sign former Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell, writes the Daily Mail.

Hull City, West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and Queens Park Rangers are also interested in signing the free agent.

The 31-year-old was released by Fulham at the end of the season following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

The Fulham boss Felix Magath is also linked with the manager's job at Southampton after Mauricio Pochettino left to manage Tottenham Hotspur.

The Saints are keeping an eye on Sidwell as Arsenal are linked with midfield pair Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama.

Sidwell started his career at Arsenal but never made a first team appearance before leaving to join Reading after loan spells at Brentford, Beveren and Brighton.

In four years at Reading the midfielder made 170 appearances, scoring 29 goals and after an impressive season in the Premier League he was signed by Chelsea.

He only lasted one season at Stamford Bridge before leaving to sign for Aston Villa in a £5m deal.

Sidwell left for Fulham after nearly three years at Villa Park, signing on a free transfer in January 2011 and went on to made 91 appearances, scoring 14 goals.

QPR Close In On Brede Hangeland Following Awkward Fulham Exit

Premier League new boys to pounce for veteran defender.

Queens Park Rangers are set to capture the signature of Fulham defender Brede Hangeland after the Norwegian deliberately set a difficult exit in motion from the relegated side, according to the Daily Mail.

The 32-year-old opted to reject the chance to leave the club on amicable terms after a mixed six-and-a-half years at Craven Cottage in order to pave the way for a move to his west London neighbours.

The big Norwegian did not want to play for Fulham in the Championship and agreed to the termination of his contract at Craven Cottage, which had a year left to run, in the hope of securing a £50,000-a-week deal at QPR and avoiding having to move house.

It is believed that the club had given him 24 hours in order to think about what he was going to tell the Fulham fans via a joint statement between himself and the club, only for him to accuse the Cottagers of sacking him via email.

Hangeland said he was 'disappointed beyond words' to be told of such 'sad news' in this manner, but Fulham insisted 'personal protocol was followed' and the player 'was notified in the right way'.

Sidwell to Become a Saint!

Although the indications, towards the back end of last season, were that Steve Sidwell wanted to remain at Craven Cottage, it wasn`t to be.

Instead Sidwell was one of a raft of players that were shown the exit as Fulham re-shape the squad ahead of a push to get out of the Championship at the first attempt.

But where Sidwell ends up remains unclear.

Early speculation inferred that Stoke City could be the destination, however, this morning, the suggestion is being championed that Sidwell could be going south with Southampton said to be ready to make the 31 year-old an offer.

We`ll keep you posted with regards to any developments.

Just What Did Go On?

All week there has been a trading of stories as to what did actually happen with regards to the exit of Brede Hangeland.

The Norwegian inferred that he`d been dumped by a text whilst the club implied that his exit had been handled in accordance with the correct procedures.

Today, in the tabloid press, it is hinted that dark forces may have been at work.

Rumours are linking Hangeland with making the short trip down the road to Loftus Road but that the 32 year-old Norwegian was hesitant about the trip fearing he wouldn`t be accepted by the Queens Park Rangers faithful unless he left Fulham under a cloud, or as someone from the club puts it,

"He was offered the chance to leave by mutual consent."

"But he wanted to go on bad terms so it`s easier to get a move."

"All this stuff about being dumped in a cruel way is nonsense."

So, have we heard the last of this spat or is there more to come?

QPR offer Premier League lifeline to Fulham cast-offs Brede Hangeland and Steve Sidwell

QPR are ready to rub Fulham's noses in taking their Premier League mantle with a double swoop for Brede Hangeland and Steve Sidwell.

The pair are among a host of players released by the Cottagers in the wake of relegation from the Premier League and their newly-promoted local rivals believe the pair can play a role as they look to establish themselves back in the top flight.

Hangeland has ended his six-and-a-half year Craven Cottage stay under a cloud with the club suggesting he wanted to leave on bad terms to engineer a move to Loftus Road after the 32-year-old Norwegian accused Fulham of sacking him with a year left on his contract.

The departure of Sidwell has been altogether more amicable, even though the 31-year-old has been holding out for a longer deal than the club was prepared to offer.

Although are host of clubs including Southampton, Hull, West Brom and Stoke are also interested in the tough-tackling midfielder, a move across West London would mean Sidwell could avoid uprooting his young family.

Sidwell said on Twitter: 'It saddens me to say my time at Fulham has come to an end. I have enjoyed every moment in the 3 and half years I've spent here.

'I'd like to say thank you....all the fans who have been truly magnificent. From my 1st game to my last I've shared your passion...

'I will always have Fulham Fc in my heart. Thank you for a special time and I wish you every success. COYW'

Meanwhile, Israel captain Yossi Benayoun, 34, has ended a 12-year stint in England after leaving QPR to join Maccabi Haifa on a two year-deal.

Fulham Clear Out Begins – Are we going to see a new Manager before the summer's out?

As we all know, this summer will spell the end of a lot of Fulham careers that a lot of us will not want to see end. The likes of Dejagah, Sidwell and Riether will most certainly be making their exits this summer as interest in them will undoubtedly be high. Even with Fulham being relegated, players such as Dejagah and Sidwell have put in outstanding performances that proved they can mix it with the best.

The sheer sadness of relegation is definitely sinking in with the Fulham faithful as we see unfortunate scenes such as Hangeland supposedly being let go via E-Mail and a variety of players unwilling to discuss their futures until after the World Cup.

One player comes to mind that I feel has shown a complete lack of respect for Fulham and that player is of course – Kostas Mitroglu. This is the man who cost £12 million back in January, made 3 appearances, scored zero goals and is now refusing to talk about Fulham because he is focused on the World Cup. Now, I totally understand that there should be a focus on a players World Cup as it looms nearer. However, since January there seems to be no indication that Mitroglu has had any focus on Fulham's fight for survival. Something I think is highlighted by the rumours that he was fully fit for weeks but Magath did not see any fight in his eyes therefore leading to him being left out of the squad.

With these gripes aside, we must now look to what can be done moving forward and who can be brought in to return us to the Premier League at the first time of asking, This however has taken another twist this week with the news that Fulham have blocked Southampton's approach to talk with Magath about replacing Pochettino. Now it looks like Fulham will not only need to build a new team but also find someone to take charge of the project.

With news floating around that Magath could be heading for the exit, many names have already started to fill the air around Craven Cottage. People are even putting Neil Lennon in the frame, something I really hope does not happen. We need a manager with proven experience at Championship level and although I am fully behind Magath – if he is to leave then we would need to replace him with a Manager who knows the lower leagues inside out. Who that is, I could not say – But I am sure we will see a very different Squad and Management bench before the season begins.

Fulham's Roadmap to Regeneration: Part IV – Potential Transfer Targets
by CHRIS GILBERTSON on JUNE 7, 2014

The fourth and final step on the roadmap to Fulham's regeneration will be the targeted acquisition of a select few players who can complement those left in place and promoted from the academy.

With our relegation, our list and spectrum from which to select those targets will have shifted. We are unlikely to be able to attract players from Europe's top leagues for a year of battling in England's second tier.

Instead, our options will be closer to home. Whilst we may not necessarily have the ability to get players to drop a tier, the Football League pyramid regularly produces players of a good enough calibre to be perfect for a promotion campaign. Indeed some football league experience would not go amiss in what is likely to be a young and foreign dominated squad left in place.

We should capitalise on our stature as a club that will have us leading the pack when it comes to attracting talent to move up the tiers of English football. All told though, with known transfer hound Felix Magath at the helm, Fulham's scouts and chequebook will likely be travelling far and wide this summer.

However, without the encyclopedic knowledge to match our German manager, here are a few names from within the Football League to whom Fulham could look this summer:

Strikers

At present, Fulham look reasonably well stocked up front. However, much depends on the fate of Kostas Mitroglou. If the Greek shines at the world cup and earns a move away from SW6 our front line will have a gaping hole. With Hugo Rodallega's scoring record questionable and Marcello Trotta reported to have handed in a transfer request, to ask teenagers Moussa Dembele and Cauley Woodrow to score 40 goals between them is simply too much. QPR's signing of Charlie Austin a year ago showed the value of adding a proven goalscorer at Championship level. Fulham's name did not come up in discussions of where Bournemouth's Lewis Grabban would end up despite interest from fellow relegated teams Norwich and Cardiff and the 22 goal striker is now heading for Carrow Road. Regardless, there are several strikers who would significantly improve our arsenal up front were they to join.

Jordan Rhodes

Blackburn hitman Rhodes has been on most potential target lists since before he left Huddersfield two years ago. At 24, he is entering his peak years and is likely desperate for a crack at the big time. After a season in which he scored 25 goals, Norwich were reported to be looking at the Scotland international before signing Grabban this week. Blackburn's obscene demands for an eight figure price tag may mean Rhodes doesn't get a move away from Ewood Park, but should he do so, Fulham would be well advised to be at the head of the queue for the prolific hitman.

Ross McCormack

Another Scot, Leeds' McCormack has dominated the Championship scoring charts since his Cardiff days. At 27 he is entering the last few years he's got to get to the highest level. With our finest in-house striking talent in their teens, securing a goalscorer with experience would be no bad thing. Leeds' new owner, flamboyant Italian Massimo Cellino, this week claimed Newcastle had a bid for the striker turned down, however, the Tyneside club say otherwise and Cellino could just be trying to drum up interest in the forward who scored 28 times last season. Another 27 year old worth monitoring is Brighton's Leandro Ulloa, who reportedly came close to joining Crystal Palace in January.

Troy Deeney

25-year-old Deeney is an intriguing possibility. He's a big burly proper striker that can do big proper striker things like push defenders out the way for fun. He can however, also score goals at Championship level with quite some frequency. 24 goals was an impressive tally for the Englishman last season in a Watford team who never really got going following their playoff final defeat the season before. Watford's owners the Pozzo family are well known dealmakers so any Watford player is likely available at the right price and Deeney could be a decent alternative to the more expensive options named above.

Callum Wilson

Dropping a division further makes finding the diamond in the rough that bit harder. Undeniably the best talent at that level either achieved promotion, such as our own Marcello Trotta, or was simply former Championship players on the downslope of their careers. Exceptions to the rule can be found and one such talent is Coventry striker Callum Wilson. The 22 year old scored 22 goals last season for a team playing their home games in the wrong town. Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth have already been linked with the forward whom Coventry want to build their team around. Peterborough's Britt Assombalonga is another young forward who will be keen to go up a division but his failure to assert himself at Watford before his drop to League One will worry any potential suitors. Finally, Chelsea and England Under 21 striker Patrick Bamford set the world alight on loan at MK Dons, but was out of the Derby team for the playoff final. Were Fulham to look to a loanee, Bamford has shown significant promise of top level potential and Fulham could prove a perfect step up.

Midfielders

Midfield is an area that Fulham appear well stocked to bring through players. However, like attack, our midfield lacks a particular punch and it will similarly be too much to ask of the likes of George Williams, Lasse Vigen Christensen, Pat Roberts and Chris David to achieve promotion on their own. Both for a cultured passer to provide the assists and some recognised athleticism would not go amiss and we'll need the midfield to chip in some goals as well. Here are a few names to consider:

Craig Bryson

Derby midfielder Bryson was the standout player in an exceptional year for the Rams that ended with heartbreaking defeat in the playoff final. At 27, Bryson's route to the top has been a long winded one, but with 16 goals and 12 assists he was a genuine contender for Championship player of the season last year. The highlight of his and Derby's spectacular season was a hat trick in the thrashing of bitter rivals Nottingham Forest and Bryson ended the year in the Championship Team of The Year. Whether he and Derby can repeat their success will remain to be seen but his name will be on a few club's target lists.

Will Hughes

Like Bryson, his teammate Will Hughes was in the Championship Team of The Year but unlike Bryson, Hughes' name has been on scouts' lists since he was under driving age. Now aged 19, the peroxide blond central midfielder remains a reported target for clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool. However, with Derby's failure to gain promotion and a lack of firm offers elsewhere, a solid and sizable bid from a club like Fulham could tempt a transfer. As unlikely as it would be, a player of Hughes' box-to-box creative talent would be perfect for our midfield.

Henri Lansbury

Nottingham Forest's Herni Lansbury has already been rumoured to be a Fulham target this summer with the Nottingham Evening Post suggesting a £5m offer was in the offing. Like Hughes, the former Arsenal man would add some much needed spark to our midfield and £5m would not be too high a price for a midfielder who gained significant honours at youth level.

Ikechi Anya

One player quietly garnering significant praise over the past two seasons has been Watford utility man Ikechi Anya. Originally a right back, Anya played for Scotland as a left midfielder last week. The 26 year old ended the season with 8 assists coming largely from defence and like Troy Deeney mentioned above, would be available at the right price. Fellow Watford man Lewis McGugan is also someone I've thought Fulham should have had an interest in for a few years now.

Defenders

Defence is an area where we will undoubtedly be looking for fresh blood. Although Dan Burn is likely etched in as a starter at centre back, who will be there alongside him is very much up for debate. With both John Heitinga, who signed for Hertha Berlin, and Brede Hangeland, who was released, formally having left in the past week, our two starting centre halves from last year's run in are no longer at the club. John Arne Riise has said his goodbyes and there ate lingering doubts as to whether Sascha Riether and Fernando Amorebieta will be at the club next season. Academy wise, Jack Grimmer and Liam Donnelly look the likeliest to make an immediate step up but we may have interest in strengthening across the board.

Aaron Cresswell

The Ipswich Town left back was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year and has been linked to Fulham in the past. Left back is our weakest position in-house so we are likely to be in the market at that position. At 24, the man who got 13 assists for Ipswich is undoubtedly on the list of players being considered. Rangers' Lee Wallace was also linked in the press this weekend.

Steve Cook

23-year-old Bournemouth centre half Cook was probably not on many fans' radars before being linked to Fulham in May. He made 39 appearances in a Bournemouth defence that ended last season with a positive goal difference and has also been linked to newly promoted Burnley in the past few weeks. Unlike Cook, Nottingham Forest's Jamaal Lascelles is probably the most hyped young defender in the division and Fulham could do a lot worse than attempting to lure him south in exchange for Steve Wigley.

Harry Maguire

Sheffield United centre half Maguire impressed for the Blades when they played Fulham in the FA Cup back in January. Wolves have reportedly had two bids already rejected for the 21-year-old with a fee of £2m rumoured to be enough to prize the player away from Sheffield. He looks destined for a big future and another year in League One might not be in his best interests.

Will Packwood

Another young defender to keep an eye on is Birmingham City's 20-year-old American Will Packwood. A Championship Young Player of The Month last season, the centre back has already shown tremendous courage to recover from a double leg fracture suffered shortly after he arrived in the Midlands. He's highly rated and in the signing of Foday Nabay a year ago, we've shown our scouts know the route to St Andrews.

Sam Byram

Were we to need a new right back, one option could be Leeds' Sam Byram. The 20-year-old was linked to Southampton in the event Callum Chambers moved on earlier in the year such is his potential. With in-house rookie Grimmer a natural centre back we may yet go into the market but chances are another homegrown option, Josh Passley, might get a chance first.

These are of course only a few potential options. With our extensive scouting network and a manager fond of scattergunned signings from far afield and beyond who knows what transfers lie in store. However, by adding a select band of young, talented and hungry players who can complement what we already have, we have the opportunity to create a new ethos and with it a whole new club. We must avoid the temptation to sign players who are old or out of contract. Now is not the time for mercenaries. Let's hope this is the first year of a new Fulham in the transfer market.

Costa Rica striker Ruiz warns Group D rivals: Don't underestimate us

Bryan Ruiz. - Credit: PA

Bryan Ruiz has warned England, Italy and Uruguay not to expect Costa Rica to be their World Cup whipping boys.
The four nations will battle it out in group D in Brazil as they look to make it to the last 16.

Costa Rica completed their preparations with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland in Philadelphia during the early hours of Saturday morning despite having to play more than half the game with 10 men following defender Giancarlo Gonzalez's sending-off.

But 28-year-old Fulham striker Ruiz, who spent the second half of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, is confident they will be more than competitive when they get under way against the Uruguayans on June 14.

Asked how Costa Rica's opponents would view the challenge they represent, he said: "They will think that it will not be easy to play against us.

"We showed in the second half that we can play with great character. They will know it won't be easy to beat us, but now they will know better."

Jorge Luis Pinto's men follow their opening fixture in Fortaleza with a trip to Recife to face Italy on June 20 before ending their group campaign against England in Belo Horizonte four days later.

Ruiz is desperate to savour every moment of his time in Brazil, but is equally intent on ensuring that Costa Rica are not simply there to make up the numbers.

Indeed, he is hoping the clash with England will prove a pivotal game in the group.

He said: "It means so much for me to make it to the World Cup - it's something I have been working for my whole life.

"Now I have that chance and I am so happy. You never know when it will be your last.

"Of course playing against England will be special for me after my time in England, and I hope that it will be a match which will decide something, that one of us to go through to the next round.

"For us to get into round two will be a dream. That game against England could decide it.

"I think England really need to have a good tournament - they are under pressure because everyone wants them to do well.

"But we want to do something special. We can get out of the group. It is 11 v 11. We have to accept they have more experience, they have a better league, they have an advantage but we showed everyone tonight what we can do."

If Costa Rica are to progress, they will need major contributions from talisman Ruiz and talented playmaker Joel Campbell.

It was Campbell's individual brilliance which inspired them to mount a second-half fightback after Gonzalez was sent off for elbowing Ireland striker Kevin Doyle, who had headed his team into an 18th-minute lead.

Ruiz said: "He is a big weapon for us. We have known that for a while, and Joel showed what a great option he can be for us up front or out on the left or the right.

"We need him to keep that level."

Campbell was snapped up as a teenager by Arsenal in August 2011, but has been sent out on three season-long loan deals since, the last of them to Olympiacos, where he played Champions League football last season.

The 21-year-old demonstrated his rich talent against the Irish - it was his pass from which keeper David Forde fouled Marco Urena to allow Celso Borges to level from the spot - and he is relishing the chance to test himself against some of the best players in the world.

Campbell said: "I don't play against players, I play against countries. England, Italy and Uruguay are not about one player.

"It is 11 v 11 and we have to play very well. It is a big moment. I have to improve in the World Cup, so I will do my best job."

Asked if Costa Rica can beat England, Campbell replied: "Yes of course. We have a good team.

"It is another game, like playing against Uruguay and Italy. We have to play very strongly to win."

Whatever happens in Brazil, Campbell will return to Arsenal after the World Cup and focus on the next phase of his career.

He said: "I only focus on my job. Last season I was at Olympiacos, so I was only thinking about Olympiacos; now after the World Cup, I will only be thinking about Arsenal."

Can we put a better perspective on this.. We chose to let him go. If he was supposedly trying to force a move through to QPR we could have sold him or just let him run down his contract, he did have a year left.

If there was that strong interest i would be suprised if any business, let alone fulham, just decided to give in or give QPR hangeland for free... It would be very unfulhamish. In fact when was the last time you saw a semi important to important player just be released like that for reasons like this for any club let alone ours.

A better perspective for whom? Hangeland?

Hangeland has made accusations which paint the Club in a bad light, but it's currently unclear whether his version of events is true.

I hope it's not. As the truth of the matter unravels, I hope it shows, at the very least, that the Club acted professionally... because my loyalty, first and foremost, is to the Club. My loyalty to individual players is secondary.

This board has plenty of contributors who are not slow to criticise the Club as soon as there is a possibility it may have mishandled something. Until it is evident that the Club has acted inappropriately, however, my support compels me to stand by it and hope that it will ultimately be exonerated.

SO TRUE!
