Paper talk: Cardiff City want Brede Hangeland, deal for reported Bluebirds target Besic discussed by Swansea City and Spurs' improved bid for Davies

We delve behind some of this morning's national headlines to see what is being said about our clubs and players

Cardiff City want centre-back Brede Hangeland following his release by Fulham.

The Cottagers confirmed Hangeland was to be released on their official website earlier this month, wishing the defender all the best after he made 272 appearances during his time at Craven Cottage.

Hangeland, 32, said he was "disappointed beyond words" by Fulham's decision to notify him by email.

Stephen's New Deal

Fulham defender Stephen Arthurworrey has put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension which keeps him at the Club until the summer of 2015.

The towering centre-back, who has been at the Club since the age of 10, spent the second half of last season on loan at Sky Bet League One side Tranmere Rovers.

He made 15 appearances for the Wirral outfit but couldn't stop them dropping into League Two after a 2-1 defeat to Bradford City on the final day of the season.

The highly-rated youngster, who missed the majority of the 2011/12 season through injury, made 10 appearances in all competitions for Fulham's Under-21s last season before his move to Tranmere.

Next Up: East Fife

The Whites take on East Fife in our first pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday afternoon (3pm). We look ahead to the clash with the Scottish outfit.

The opposition

Not unlike Fulham, East Fife are currently undergoing a period of transition following relegation, with a number of players departing at the end of the season.

The Fifers finished the 2013/14 season in ninth position (second bottom) of Scottish League One, thereby setting up a relegation-promotion Play-Off versus Clyde who ended the campaign in fourth spot in the division below.

After winning that tie on penalties following a 2-2 draw over two legs, East Fife were pitted against Stirling Albion – the side who came third in League Two and had defeated runners-up Annan Athletic in the other Play-Off.

They defeated Albion 2-1 away from home in the First Leg of the Final, but a 2-0 defeat in the return fixture ensured their six-year stay in Scotland's third tier came to an end.

The manager

Gary Naysmith, who had initially joined the club in the summer of 2013 in a player/assistant-manager capacity, was named boss following the resignation of Willie Aitchison.

Naysmith originally took caretaker charge at the end of November with the club sitting bottom of the table, and victories in his first two games in charge saw him appointed permanently on an 18-month contract.

The left-back began his career at Hearts and made more than 100 appearances before moving south of the border at the age of 21 where he joined Everton in a £1.75m deal.

After running out for the Toffees some 155 times – a figure which would have been greater had injury not curtailed his progress – he moved on to Sheffield United for another seven-figure fee, before taking in spells at Huddersfield Town and Aberdeen.

Player to watch

Nathan Austin: Signed from local amateur side Leven United 12 months ago as a 19-year-old, Austin showed glimpses of his potential for East Fife in 2013/14, making 29 appearances – although more than half of these came from the bench. A pacey striker, he found the net five times last season and there may be greater expectation on his shoulders in the coming campaign following the recent departure of top goalscorer Liam Buchanan.

Inside the camp

Chairman Lee Murray believes his team can bounce back from relegation, telling the East Fife Mail: "The plan is still to take this club into the Championship because I believe that's where East Fife belong.

"Our support is up there, and in some cases is better than some of the Championship teams. Our supporters deserve a Championship team but it was always going to be a long-term plan. I always thought it might take us five years.

"Relegation has knocked us back a wee bit – but if it means we come back up stronger then so be it."

Tickets will be available to buy from the turnstiles on the day of the game, priced at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.

CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE: FULHAM

A look at Brentford's opponents in the Sky Bet Championship continuing with Fulham

THE GROUND
Craven Cottage
Stevenage Road
London
SW6 6HH

Apart from a two-year spell at Loftus Road, the home of Queens Park Rangers, when ground improvements were underway, Fulham have played at Craven Cottage since 1896.

The aforementioned redevelopment means the ground is now a 25,700 all-seater stadium.

The two ends of the ground, the Hammersmith End and Putney End, were seated during that period to add to The Riverside Stand, which backs on the River Thames and the Johnny Haynes Stand, a Grade II* listed building.

The Cottage Pavilion sits in one corner between he Johnny Haynes and Stand and the Putney End.

Away supporters are housed in a section of the Putney, behind one of the goals, and there is also a neutral section, as well as home supporters, in the other half of that stand.

The usual away allocation is around 3,000.

THE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
It is approximately six miles by road from Griffin Park to Craven Cottage.

The route is very simple, taking the A4 to the Hammersmith flyover and then joining Fulham Palace Road.

Turn on to Finlay Street and then Stevenage Road to reach the ground.

Parking around the ground is restricted to meters that can only be used for one hour – supporters driving are advised to park away from the stadium.

The nearest station is Putney Bridge, which is on the London Underground District Line and is less than a mile away.

Hammersmith London Underground station, on the Piccadilly, District, Circle and Hammersmith and City lines, is around 20 minutes away on foot.

Putney station is just over a mile from the ground.

Train travellers can get trains to Putney directly from Brentford, Richmond, Twickenham, Clapham Junction and London Waterloo.

Fulham Place Road is also served by many London Buses.

The Supporters' Association will be running coaches to every game this season – details of times and prices will be announced in due course.

THE FIXTURES
Brentford will play Fulham at home on Saturday November 22
The Bees then travel to Craven Cottage on Good Friday, April 3.

THE RECENT HISTORY
Fulham ended a 13-year stay in the Premier League with relegation at the end of the 2013/14 season.

The Cottagers had established themselves in the top tier over the past decade, regularly finishing in the top ten and even reaching a Europa League Final.

But it all came crashing down last year.

Fulham had been a club on the up for many years.

Although they had a few years in the top flight in the 1950s and 60s Fulham were largely known as a lower division club and by 1996 were struggling to avoid relegation from the Football League.

But after promotion from the fourth tier in 1997 they were bought by Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed and surged through the divisions, reaching the top flight in 2001.

Although close to relegation in 2006 and, particularly, 2007, Fulham's fall from grace was unexpected after five successive top-12 finishes, albeit Al-Fayed had sold up after the end of the 2012/13 season

They won just three of their first 14 games, taking ten points from them and were always in relegation trouble.

Manager Martin Jol left in early December and replacement René Muelensteen only lasted until mid-February.

The Cottagers were bottom when Felix Magath took over and although they picked up three wins in a month just before Easter, their fate was sealed when they were thrashed at Stoke City on the day Brentford collected a trophy to mark promotion from League One.

THE MANAGER
Felix Magath has been in charge at Fulham since mid-February, when he became their third manager during a turbulent 2013/14 season.

Magath is one of the most experienced managers in European football, having worked in Germany's Bundesliga for most of the past 20 years.

During his playing days the 60-year-old won 60 caps for West Germany and was in the squad that won the 1980 European Championships and finished as runners-up in the 1982 and 1986 World Cups.

He also won a European Cup when at Hamburger SV.

During a long managerial career he returned to Hamburg as boss and also managed Bayern Munich to two Bundesliga titles.
Other clubs on his CV include Vfl Wolfsburg, FC Shalke 04 and VfB Stuttgart.

THE TOP SCORER
Steve Sidwell finished the 2013/14 as Fulham's top scorer.

The central midfield player netted eight goals in all competitions, seven in his 38 Premier League games.

The 31-year-old spent three years at Fulham after a career that had seen him play in the top flight for Reading, Chelsea and Aston Villa.

He started out at Arsenal and had a loan spell at Brentford during the 2001/02 season.
Sidwell left Fulham to join Stoke on a free transfer at the end of the season.

THE KEY MEN
Fulham had problems at both ends of the pitch last season but they were more obvious in defence.

The Cottagers scored 40 goals last season, only five clubs scored fewer, but he 85 they conceded was the worst in the division by some way.

There have been changes in the close season with Sidwell's departure added to those of Lewis Holtby – who returned to Tottenham Hotspur after playing 13 games on loan and Damien Duff, who played 15 Premier League games last season.

Midfield players Giorgos Karagounis, who played 14 games, and Mahamadou Diarra as well as defender John Arne Riise, who made 20 appearances, also left Craven Cottage this summer.

Defenders John Heitinga, who played 14 Premier League games after joining on a short term deal from Everton, and Sascha Reither, who played 31 games, and Brede Hangeland, who made more than 200 Premier League appearances for Fulham, were also among those leaving.

Philippe Senderos and Dimitar Berbatov, who both left on loan last year, have also departed.

Those remaining at Craven Cottage include former England midfield player Scott Parker and goalkeepers Maarten Steklenburg and David Stockdale.

Fulham have experience in the shape of Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega, Kieran Richardson, another former England man, Iranian international Ashkan Dejagah, who scored five Premier League goal last term, and Venezuelan defender Fernando Amorebieta.

Swiss international Pajtim Kasami and Sweden's Alexander Kačaniklić are also present for the promotion push and Costa Rica international Bryan Ruiz will return from a loan spell at PSV Eindhoven.

Fulham have added defender Shaun Hutchinson, from Motherwell, Australian striker Adam Taggart, Tim Hoogland, from Shalke, and Swiss defender Kay Voser to yheir squad for their assault on The Championship.

Leeds desperate to keep wantaway striker McCormack

President Massimo Cellino has reiterated Leeds' desire to keep wantaway striker Ross McCormack.

The forward is reported to have handed in a transfer request the day after new head coach David Hockaday was installed on June 19, with Fulham understood to be in pole position to sign the Scotland international.

Speculation that McCormack's days at the club were numbered gathered pace on Monday when he failed to head out to the club's summer training camp in Italy with the rest of the first-team squad.

But a Leeds statement read: "Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino and the club would like to respond to recent media speculation regarding Ross McCormack.

"We would like to reiterate our desire to keep Ross McCormack at Leeds United. This desire includes keeping all of our best players as we look to build a stronger and successful squad for the 2014/15 Championship season.

"Leeds United may not be the richest club in the Championship, but we do not need to sell our best players in order to run the club successfully."

West Ham failed in their bid to sign McCormack in January, while Newcastle, former club Cardiff, Norwich and Derby have also been linked with the 27-year-old.

When Hockaday was unveiled by Cellino earlier this month, the Italian insisted the Scot would only be sold for the right price to a Barclays Premier League club.

Cellino said he had blocked McCormack's proposed move to Fulham's London rivals West Ham in January. He also claimed he rejected an approach from a north-east club in recent weeks.

Felix Magath completes Fulham back four with Kay Voser signing

Basle's Kay Voser has signed for Fulham Picture: AP)

After two years of waiting, Fulham have finally treated themselves to an actual left-back by signing Swiss 27-year-old Kay Voser.

Joining on a two-year deal, with the option of a third, Voser is the apparent final piece to Felix Magath's back-four puzzle that was so inadequate last season it cost us our Premier League status.

While there hasn't been a great deal reported on what Fulham can expect from their new signing – other than the fact that he was part of the FC Basle team that beat Chelsea in Jose Mourinho's first Champions League tie after returning to the Bridge – Voser has experience in winning things from his time in Switzerland.

Something that, although won't translate absolutely, should set him in good stead now that he has signed for a team that, for the first time in a long while, is challenging to win something.

Aside from that, Voser is of a good age – not too young and, unfamiliarly so for Fulham, not too old – where he should be more than capable of keeping up with the pace of the modern game, something that John Arne Riise struggled with last season.

Joining the club alongside Dan Burn and the recently signed centre-back Shaun Hutchinson and right-back Tim Hoogland, Fulham's new look back-four is very much an untried formula, but with the best part of the pre-season still ahead, the defence have a great opportunity in which to acclimatise to one another before our first game at Ipswich.

How Fulham's entire squad will look come the start of the season however, still remains to be seen, as the uncharacteristically good Bryan Ruiz continues to dazzle in Brazil, Besiktas sniff around our Greek sick-note Kostas Mitroglou, and we desperately try and keep hold of the ever-slipping shirt of Ashkan Dejagah.

The same is to be said going the other way too, however, as the recent dominating headlines of Ross McCormack joining Fulham for a hugely inflated fee, overshadow the actual work being done by Magath – like signing Kay Voser.

But for now that's a good thing. Fulham are still very much in the thick of a rebuilding process and the more players we can sign under radar to strengthen our team, ultimately, the better.

Stephen Arthurworrey: Fulham defender signs new deal

Fulham defender Stephen Arthurworrey has signed a new one-year contract with the Championship club.

The 19-year-old centre-back has been with the west London side since the age of 10 but is yet to make his senior debut for the Whites.

Arthurworrey spent the second half of last season on loan at Tranmere Rovers and made 17 appearances during his time on the Wirral.

He also featured 10 times for Fulham's under-21 side in 2013-14.

Meanwhile academy graduate Lyle Della Verde has signed a new one-year deal with the club, with the option of a further year.

The midfielder, also 19, scored two goals in 18 appearances for the under-21s last season.

World Cup 2014: Felix Magath claims he'd rather have Thomas Muller over Neymar in his side

Felix Magath has dented Fulham fans hopes for the future after saying he would not sign World Cup superstar Neymar, even if he could get him for free.

Relegated Fulham will ply their trade in the Championship next season, but Magath doesn't think he could find a spot for the No 10.

Speaking to German TV channel ZDF, Magath said that he didn't like players like Neymar.

"I like team players. Players like Neymar, where it's all about the individual scoring goals... I don't know," said the German.

He added with a grin: "I probably wouldn't even take him for free."

Magath was speaking to former Bayern Munich star Hasan Salihamidzic, who was shocked by his admission - he even burst out laughing.

However Magath, who begins his pre-season with a trip to East Fife on Saturday, did then admit he might change his mind, on one condition: "If Neymar wins the World Cup with Brazil, then maybe I'd consider it."

When asked which players he would like to Craven Cottage, Magath named Germany duo Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer.

Fulham slash 29 jobs following Premier League relegation as club looks to better on-pitch investment

Stunned staff were asked to take voluntary redundancy on Monday as the London club look to bounce back to the top flight this season

Fulham have slashed 29 jobs following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

The cuts were made on Monday ahead of the start of pre-season.

Stunned staff were asked to take voluntary redundancy with the club aiming to focus their investment onto the pitch with the aim of an immediate return to the top flight.

It comes with the club looking to meet Championship side Leeds' whopping £10million valuation for striker Ross McCormack.

The cuts at Fulham also come with the club as yet unable to shift £11million flop Kostas Mitroglou.

The Greek striker was signed in January from Olympiakos to score the goals that would keep them Fulham in the top flight.

He proved a disaster, however, and the only tangible interest the club have had in him is a loan offer from Turkish club Besiktas.

Meanwhile McCormack, who scored 29 goals in the Championship last season, has handed in a transfer request at Elland Road in order to force a move to Craven Cottage.

The striker was left behind earlier this week as his club flew off on a pre-season tour of Italy.

It is now unlikely that he will ever play for the Lilywhites again.

McCormack is understood to be disillusioned at the club with claims that Leeds supremo Massimo Cellino has gone back on a promise to sell him.

A statement on the club's website on Thursday morning said: "We would like to reiterate our desire to keep Ross McCormack at Leeds United.

"This desire includes keeping all of our best players as we look to build a stronger and successful squad for the 2014/15 Championship season.

"Leeds United may not be the richest club in the Championship, but we do not need to sell our best players in order to run the club successfully."

Mirrorsport understands, however, Cellino - confident of overturning the club's transfer ban within the next week - is simply keen to bring in replacements before he sanctions McCormack's departure.

Contract Extension For Lyle

Lyle Della Verde has signed a new one-year deal with the Club, with the option of a further year, potentially keeping him at Fulham until the summer of 2016.

The 19-year-old midfielder made 18 appearances for our Under-21 team in 2013/14, scoring twice – both goals coming in a 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers at Motspur Park in March.

News of his contract extension arrives on the same day as his U21 Fulham teammate Stephen Arthurworrey.

West Ham linked to striker

West Ham are in a fight with Fulham for the services of Leeds star Ross McCormack but the West Yorkshire club want to keep him.

The Cottagers had been leading the chase for the top scorer in the Championship last season but the Hammers have also been keen and could offer Premier League football. It's been reported that McCormack has put in a transfer request at Elland Road but it has not been confirmed and in a statement their controversial new owner Massimo Cellino says he wants to keep him. A Leeds statement read: "Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino and the club would like to respond to recent media speculation regarding Ross McCormack. "We would like to reiterate our desire to keep Ross McCormack at Leeds United. This desire includes keeping all of our best players as we look to build a stronger and successful squad for the 2014/15 Championship season. West Ham set to announce third summer signing

West Ham are set to beat Fulham and West Brom to the signing of Ipswich Town left-back Aaron Cresswell.

The 24-year-old underwent a medical at the Hammers' Chadwell Heath training base on Thursday and will become their third signing of the summer.

The Baggies and the Cottagers had also been linked with Cresswell, but West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has moved quickly to bring in the former Tranmere man.

Cresswell, who made 42 Championship appearances for Ipswich last season, will compete with Joey O'Brien and Dan Potts for the Hammers' left-back spot.

He follows new arrivals Mauro Zarate and Cheikhou Kouyate to Upton Park as West Ham look to build on last season's 13th-placed finish.

Davidson's Fulham move in doubt

Davidson in action for the Socceroos against the Netherlands at the World Cup.

Jason Davidson's proposed move to join Adam Taggart at Fulham appears to be off, with Heracles claiming to have triggered an automatic extension to the player's contract.
The left-back, who played all three matches for the Socceroos at the World Cup last month, had been tipped to swap the Eredivisie for England's Championship.

But the 23-year-old is now set to stay at the Polman Stadion for at least the next 12 months, unless an agreement on a transfer fee can be reached with any potential suitors.

"In January, Jason and his agent indicated they would like to continue here for two more years," director of football Nico-Jan Hoogma was quoted as telling Dutch reporters by FourFourTwo.

"He wanted to wait until the World Cup with Australia to decide but because we wanted to keep him we haven't terminated his contract.

"The fact he hasn't left (by July 1) means he is under the same conditions. Those are the rules of the collective agreement for professional footballers and we've discussed this with Jason and his agent."

Davidson began his career with Hume City in the Victorian Premier League before joining Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira in 2009.
