Development Squad Announcement

FFC can confirm that the Club's Development Squad will not compete in the Barclays Premier Reserve League for the 2010/11 campaign.

Next season FFC will deliver a programme for the Club's 18-21 year-old players, including competitive football, loans to other clubs and occassional tournaments. All Development Squad friendly fixtures will be played behind closed doors next season.

Whilst the Development Squad has performed admirably in the Barclays Premier Reserve League in recent years, the Club feels that a tailored Club campaign, arranged around First Team fixtures, will not only benefit Development Squad players, but will also allow Roy Hodgson greater flexibility with regard to the Premier League's new squad rules.

Aston Villa's Fulham target Steve Sidwell prepared to bide his time over switch

VILLA midfielder Steve Sidwell intends to wait until Roy Hodgson's future is resolved before considering a switch to Fulham.

The Cottagers are interested in taking the London-born former Arsenal trainee and Chelsea misfit back to the capital this summer.

But there is uncertainty over who will be in charge at Craven Cottage next summer with Liverpool strongly courting Hodgson.

And, rather than rushing into a move away from Villa Park, Sidwell will bide his time to see if there is interest from other clubs.

Hodgson has stormed ahead of Villa boss Martin O'Neill as the favourite to replace Rafa Benitez in the Anfield hot-seat. And, after failing to establish himself at his last two clubs, Sidwell wants assurances over who will be in charge at Fulham.

The former Reading dynamo is among half a dozen Villa fringe players who have been put up for sale by O'Neill.

Sidwell struggled to break up the central midfield partnership of Stiliyan Petrov and James Milner last season.

Villa are hopeful of recouping up to £3 million of the £5m fee they paid to sign him from Stamford Bridge two years ago.

Meanwhile, reports in the Italian press that Villa are weighing up a move for Fiorentina's French goalkeeper Sebastien Frey are believed to be wide of the mark.

Fulham - Real to the Rescue?
Could Real Madrid have done Fulham a huge favour?

With Roy Hodgson seemingly the favourite to succeed Rafael Benitez at Liverpool, it appears another creditable candidate has now also joined the race.

Manuel Pellegrini, sacked by Real Madrid and subsequently replaced by Jose Mourinho, is now mentioned as being a front runner on a list of three that also includes Sir Roy and Kenny Dalglish.

Could Real Madrid have done us a huge favour?

Senderos To Miss Next Two Games

Philippe Senderos will miss Switzerland's next two World Cup matches with an ankle injury.

Fulham's new centre-half was substituted in the 36th minute of Switzerland's shock 1-0 defeat of tournament favourites Spain and will now miss the next two group stage matches with the same problem that has kept captain Alexander Frei on the sidelines.

'Victim of the same injury as Alex Frei, an ankle sprain, Philippe Senderos is officially out of the two matches against Chile and Honduras,' a statement read on www.football.ch.

Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer has called on the senior members of the Australia squad to provide a calming influence as they look to recover from their 4-0 defeat to Germany in their opening World Cup clash.

The Socceroos face Ghana tomorrow in a must-win Group D showdown, minus the suspended Tim Cahill, and the Cottagers stopper reckons there is little time to feel sorry for themselves.

Schwarzer said: "We have got to forget about the Germany game, as difficult as it is.

"We have got to regroup and pick ourselves up and make sure everyone, but especially the senior guys, get together and make sure we put everything into the next two games.

"Obviously, it's a bitter start for us but everyone expected this to happen (losing to Germany in the first game) so I suppose we are not in a worse position than people expected us to be in.

"It was always going to be tough playing Germany first game – everyone said we were up against it and everyone wrote us off, and I suppose that was justifiable given the result was 4-0.

"But we still believe we are good enough to get through and we still believe we can pick ourselves up.

"There is a lot of work to be done but we have enough ability to change things around and we have got two more games to go. For us, they are like two cup finals and we know now we have to win both."

Dickson Etuhu was another Fulham star to come up short as his Nigerian side lost 1-0 to Argentina in their first game of the tournament.

But there was better news for Ghana's John Pantsil, who saw off Serbia, South Africa's Kagisho Dikgacoi, whose team held Mexico, and Clint Dempsey, scorer of the USA's equaliser against England.

Meanwhile, former AFC Wimbledon striker Shane Smeltz enjoyed a memorable World Cup debut, setting up Winston Reid for New Zealand's last-gasp equaliser against Slovakia on Tuesday.

Manuel Pellegrini In Talks Over Liverpool Job, Roy Hodgson Still Favourite?

The representative of former Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that his client is in talks with Liverpool over succeeding Rafa Benitez – although the received wisdom is that Fulham manager Roy Hodgson is still favourite to take over at Anfield.

Pellegrini's agent Marco Piccioli is quoted in The Sun today as saying;

"We are evaluating the move [to Liverpool] and we will soon have a new meeting to better establish the details of this deal."

Even though the Chilean manager (who has been out of work since being sacked by Real at the end of last season to make way for Jose Mourinho) appears to have been in direct contact with the club, Cottagers boss Hodgson is still the prospective candidate closest to taking up the reigns at Liverpool.

Both the Guardian and the Mirror are today professing Hodgson to be the Liverpool hierarchy's preferred choice to succeed Benitez, even though the man himself seemed to reiterate his commitment to his current employers when quizzed live on the BBC whilst punditing on the Mexico v France game last night;

"I'm happy at Fulham. It is all speculation and I can't enlighten you. I don't know any more than you do."

The Guardian go as far as to suggest that Liverpool will make an official approach for Hodgson next week, although I suspect that the truth of the matter is that no-one's actually got a f**king clue what's going on.
