Exclusive: Sven in line for Fulham job

Published 22:00 19/06/10

By Simon Mullock

Sven Goran Eriksson is in line for a shock return to the Premier League with Fulham - if the Londoners lose Roy Hodgson to Liverpool.

The Cottagers still haven't given up hope of keeping Hodgson away from Anfield with so much uncertainty over the future ownership of the club and limited transfer funds available.

But Fulham are making contingency plans should Hodgson depart - and Eriksson has emerged as a strong contender.

Chief executive Alistair Macintosh worked with the former England boss for a season at Manchester City before both men lost their jobs in the summer of 2008.

He is a big admirer of a manager who won championships with Gothenburg, Benfica and Lazio and who took England to successive World Cups.

Eriksson is currently in charge of the Ivory Coast at the World Cup in South Africa. But his contract expires at the end of the tournament and he would relish the chance to work again in England.

The 62-year-old has had brief spells with the Mexican national team and at Notts County since leaving City.

Eriksson still has a home in London and would enjoy a return to the bright lights of the capital and the glamour of the Premier League.

Everything hinges on Hodgson's future. The 62-year-old is working as a television pundit for the BBC at the World Cup and is keen to defuse speculation linking him to Liverpool.

But he remains the No 1 target to succeed Rafa Benitez in the Kop hot-seat after taking Fulham into Europe and to the Europa League final.

It is the kind of challenge that Hodgson would normally relish. But Liverpool have been put up for sale by owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett and there is uncertainty about who he would be working for.

A change of ownership would immediately put his appointment in doubt.  And Liverpool's £350million debts mean any new boss will have limited funds for new players.

Hodgson would also be on any FA shortlist to replace Fabio Capello as England boss.

Capello's future will hinge on his ability to resurrect England's fortunes at the World Cup following draws with the United States and Algeria.

And the highly-experienced Hodgson would be in the frame to replace the Italian after spells in charge of Switzerland, Finland and the United Arab Emirates.

HUGHES TO REPLACE HODGSON AT FULHAM

Roy's Anfield appointment is a formality

HUGHES: Fulham job appeals

By Chris Bascombe

ROY HODGSON'S move to Anfield will be rubber-stamped this week, heralding a return to Premier League management for Mark Hughes.

Several candidates have been sounded out for the Liverpool job but Hodgson is the man they want.

Hughes has been out of work for six months since his dismissal by Manchester City. But he has been earmarked as the successor to Hodgson at Fulham.

The former Wales chief is ready to return to work and knows that a really high-profile job is unlikely to be available once Hodgson takes up the vacancy on Merseyside.

Following their run to the Europa League final last season, Fulham want to build on the progress made under Hodgson. And owner Mohamed Al-Fayed, who sold Harrods for £1.5billion to Qatar Holdings last month, is willing to provide a new boss with transfer cash.

Fulham have already signed Switzerland defender Philippe Senderos from Arsenal and are close to securing Aston Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell in a £3million deal.

They will resist bids for striker Bobby Zamora and believe they are close to tying him down to a new four-year contract.

That will encourage Hughes, who knows the Fulham chief executive Alistair Mackintosh.

The pair were together at Eastlands only for a matter of days, but Mackintosh is known to be a big admirer of Hughes.

Hodgson's switch to Liverpool is now little more than a formality. The 62-year-old could be in the post by next weekend.

I understand Liverpool interviewed several candidates, including former Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini, but decided Hodgson was the outstanding contender.

HODGSON: Reds' next boss

Chief executive Christian Purslow and Kenny Dalglish had talks with Pellegrini last week but were not hugely impressed by the Chilean, who was replaced at the Bernabeu by Jose Mourinho last month.

Hodgson originally wanted a quick decision from Liverpool but the club said it was prepared to take its time. However, England's World Cup troubles have sharpened the Reds' focus.

Should England fail to beat Slovenia on Wednesday and miss the knockout stages in South Africa, the chances of Fabio Capello keeping his job for long would be slim.

Experienced Hodgson has plenty of admirers at the FA and has made it clear privately that the England job remains the pinnacle of his ambitions.

Liverpool will head off any potential hitch by speaking to him over the next couple of days.

Hodgson is in South Africa commentating for the BBC, which is why an announcement of his appointment at Anfield is unlikely until towards the end of the week.

Fulham chief executive Mackintosh will then contact 46-year- old Hughes and hope to secure quick agreement on his return to the Premier League.

BIRMINGHAM BOSS TARGETS TIOTE

TIOTE: Birmingham like the look of him

19/06/2010

BIRMINGHAM are set to make a £4m move for FC Twente midfielder Cheik Tiote.

The Ivorian was one of the stars of Steve McClaren's Dutch title-winning side but is available at the right price.

And Alex McLeish is keen to bring the Ivorian to St Andrew's as cover for established first-choice midfield pairing Barry Ferguson and Lee Bowyer.

The Premier League side will send scouts to watch Tiote in action in Ivory Coast's World Cup opener clash with five-time champions Brazil on Sunday.

Fulham are also keeping tabs on the 23-year-old, but Birmingham have stolen a march on their rivals and are keen to tie up a deal after the World Cup.

HAMMERS TARGET £3M MARVEAUX

MARVEAUX: Hammers eye winger

By Tom Lawrence, 19/06/2010

WEST HAM are poised to make a £3million move for Rennes' highly-rated winger Sylvain Marveaux.

Marveaux, 24, has been earning rave reviews in France and has also been attracting interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.

The former France under-21 midfielder has already been compared to Chelsea's Florent Malouda and is ready to showcase his talents in the Premier League.

West Ham are looking to strengthen their squad and new manager Avram Grant has money at his disposal during the summer. Swiss international Valon Behrami is expected to leave Upton Park while Mark Noble has been linked with moves to Fulham and Stoke.

Grant knows he needs to strengthen his wide midfield positions and hopes Marveaux will follow in the footsteps of Thomas Hitzlsperger who completed his move to West Ham last week.

Brentford star's wife pleas for calm

Jun 18 2010

By Tim Street

Kevin O'Connor's wife has pleaded for calm ahead of her husband's testimonial match between Brentford and Fulham.

Brentford stalwart O'Connor was awarded the game in recognition of his 10 years of loyal service to the club.

Roy Hodgson will bring his Fulham team to Griffin Park on Wednesday, July 14, if the new pitch being laid is ready.

However, fears have arisen that the occasion might be spoilt by action off the pitch if an old rivalry between the teams spills over.

Although Fulham have been light years away from Brentford since Mohammed Al Fayad started pouring millions into them, the teams were huge rivals in the 1980s and 90s, when they played each other regularly.

And the rivalry still exists today, despite not having met in more than a decade, since Paul Moody's brace gave Kevin Keegan's Fulham a 2-0 win over Micky Adams' Brentford at Griffin Park in April 1998.

Since the fixture was announced, there have been threats of trouble on Fulham internet message boards, which have been played down by Bees fans.

However, Penny O'Connor is not taking any chances and has pleaded with everyone not to spoil her husband's big day.

She told the Chronicle: "I understand there has been a rivalry between the teams, but I hope we can just let bygones be bygones.

"The majority of people will be perfectly happy to come and watch a game of football, but if anyone is thinking of anything else, then please stay away."

Fulham Line-Up Sven-Goran Eriksson As Replacement For Liverpool-Bound Roy Hodgson - Report

Sven-Goran Eriksson is ready to return to the Premier League next season, as Fulham look to replace Roy Hodgson should the temptation of managing Liverpool prove too great a temptation to resist.

According to the Sunday Mirror, the Cottagers are still hopeful Hodgson will remain with them next season, after guiding them to mid-table security in the top-flight and to the final of the Europa League.

However, should the highly respected coach choose to move to Anfield, Fulham's top-brass are reportedly already making plans for his replacement.

Former England, Mexico and Manchester City coach Eriksson is currently in charge of the Ivory Coast, although his contract expires at the end of the World Cup and it is believed he would relish another opportunity to manage in the Premier League.

Following their successful run in the Europa League last season, interest in Hodgson has intensified, and Liverpool have made him their number one target to replace Rafael Benitez, who left to join Inter Milan earlier this month.

However, it is also reported that Hodgson has been included on a shortlist for the next England manager as Fabio Capello looks set to leave after the tournament in South Africa.
