Kenny Dalglish Must Stay to Help if Roy Hodgson Takes Over at Liverpool

If the latest whispers circulating round Anfield are true, the idea that Roy Hodgson will bring some relief to the maelstrom that is Liverpool Football Club is regarded with scepticism within the club.

Kenny Dalglish, the club legend and current ambassador who has been given the task of finding a replacement for Rafa Benitez, has told the Liverpool boardroom that he does not believe Hodgson is up to the task, it is claimed.

Dalglish is entitled as the next man to his opinion regarding Hodgson, although the rumours that Dalglish will quit Liverpool if the Fulham manager is put in charge put an entirely different slant on the issue and can only exacerbate the current crisis at the club.

Dalglish has made it known that he covets a return to the Liverpool managerial hotseat after an absence of 19 years and many fans would welcome him back with open arms.

he Scot scored 172 goals in 515 appearances for Liverpool after joining from Celtic in 1977 eventually ascending to the role of player-manager after replacing Joe Fagan in 1985.

In his first season in charge, he guided Liverpool to the League and FA Cup double, beating Merseyside rivals Everton in the final as well as further league success in 1987-88 and 1989-90 season and another FA Cup success in the 1988-89 season.

He eventually resigned in February 1991, worn down by dealing with the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster before returning to the club last year in an ambassadorial role.

If he were to quit if Hodgson was selected, Dalglish risks undermining his reputation and damaging a club he loves so dearly.

What Hodgson will need if he is put in charge is unity and a sense that the whole club is behind him; Dalglish's exit would send out the opposite message.

Hodgson would almost certainly approach him and ask for his advice and help in beginning the long process of rebuilding Liverpool in the immediate post-Benitez era.

So how would it look if Dalglish were to pack his bags and refuse to assist him?

It would certainly strengthen the spotlight that already glares on Anfield at the moment and further enhance the current belief that the club is lurching from one bad move to another.

Most crucially, it would deprive Hodgson - and Liverpool - the assistnace of a man who led them during arguably the most dominant period in their history.

For the sake of Liverpool, Dalglish must stay if Hodgson is appointed.

Because one thing is clear: for reasons both on and off the pitch, Liverpool need Dalglish more than ever.
