Bellusci worry for Leeds

Leeds defender Giuseppe Bellusci remains a fitness concern for head coach Neil Redfearn ahead of the home game against Fulham.

Bellusci missed last week's defeat at Ipswich with a knock and skipper Jason Pearce is expected to resume alongside Liam Cooper if the Italian misses out again.

Redfearn has no major new injury or suspension concerns but could be tempted to make one or two changes after seeing his side lose 4-1 at Portman Road.

Midfielder Rudy Austin and striker Billy Sharp are both pushing for recalls to the starting line-up, while Chris Dawson is hoping to make his first league start of the season.

Fulham will be without Marcus Bettinelli through suspension following his red card in last Friday's 5-0 defeat by Watford, so Gabor Kiraly starts in goal.

Defenders Fernando Amorebieta (knee) and Tim Hoogland (pelvis) are still sidelined along with goalkeeper Jesse Jeronen (knee) and young winger Lyle Della-Verde (ankle).

Sean Kavanagh is back in training after a thigh injury and will play for the club's Under-21s on Saturday, as will Adam Taggart who is yet to make his Whites debut due to a groin problem.

Striker Ross McCormack will lead the line against the club he left in the summer.

Youth Teams In Action

Both Fulham's Under-21 and Under-18 sides are in league action on Saturday, with the older boys taking on Tottenham Hotspur at Motspur Park (1pm) after Kevin Keen's youngsters travel to Arsenal (10.45am).

Adam Taggart made his comeback from injury in Monday night's 3-2 win against West Ham United in the Premier League International Cup, and First Team Manager Kit Symons said this week that he expects the Australia international to get 45 minutes under his belt against Spurs.

He also hinted that Sean Kavanagh could be involved with the Under-21s at some point, ahead of his return to the senior squad.

There's currently very little to separate the two sides ahead of Saturday's game, as they have each taken 12 points from their eight games played, although the North Londoners are higher in the table courtesy of their slightly superior goal difference.

The Under-18s will be looking to bounce back from their midweek disappointment in the FA Youth Cup when they face the Gunners at their Shenley Training Centre.

Arsenal are three points and two places above the Whites in the Barclays U18 Premier League table.

The teams have already met this season when Fulham squandered a two-goal lead at Motspur Park in September to lose 3-2.

Stephen Humphrys and Josh Walker had seemingly put the home side in control of proceedings, but the Reds hit back to take all three points.

Ashdown Denied Fulham Move

Former Crawley 'keeper Jamie Ashdown, snapped up as a former free agent after leaving Leeds United last summer, has been denied a move to Championship outfit Fulham by red tape.

Ashdown was looking to join the Championship side, doing so in time to make his debut against Leeds as he looked to 'show what he's capable of' against the side that he never felt he really got a chance for, injuries didn't help, having signed for them from Portsmouth previously

The 34-year-old has told the media that he's been left 'gutted' that he couldn't make this move.

He said: 'I'm really gutted not to have the chance to come up against Leeds and show my wares in the Championship again.

'After the injury last year I fought so hard to get back to fitness and was delighted to prove my fitness and then with the unbeaten results with Crawley.

'Fulham would have been a fantastic opportunity to show what I'm capable of and playing against Leeds, where I never really had a look in, would have been the icing on the cake.'

Ashdown's short-term contract with us was due to expire at the end of the month but a mutual agreement recently saw him leave early, had we retained him and loaned him out before the emergency loan window closed this would have been fine but as this came after he'll have to wait until January to sign for a new club.

He performed well enough for us and was perhaps a little unfortunate to leave Broadfield early?

A weaker attack but why Leeds should be confident of beating Fulham

Leeds United should be confident of a win against Fulham in the Championship this weekend.

Leeds United manager Neil Redfearn will be hoping for a comprehensive performance when his side host Fulham this weekend.

There's not too much between these teams in terms of the Championship table and they both go into the match after heavy defeats with Leeds losing 4-1 at Ipswich and Kit Symons watching his side concede five against Watford.

Goals   Goals Conceded   Won Tackle   Accurate Pass   Accurate Cross   Appearances
Fulham   30   39   310   6,727   61   20
Leeds   24   30   312   6,636   49   20
One of the most noticeable differences falls in attack and defence.

Fulham have scored more goals than Leeds this season but they have conceded many more, which will give Redfearn hope that his team can get on top if they mount some early pressure at Elland Road.

There's not too much between the teams in terms of the number of tackles being made and the passing accuracy of each team, which suggests that it will be a match which comes down to the individual battles breaking out all over the pitch.

One area where Fulham could potentially hurt Leeds is out wide though the difference in terms of crosses shouldn't be a major surprise considering Leeds play predominantly with a narrower formation.

Preview: Leeds United vs. Fulham

Both Leeds United and Fulham will be looking to bounce back from disappointing results when they face each other at Elland Road on Saturday.

The hosts took an early lead in their match against high-flying Ipswich Town last weekend, but were powerless to resist as the in-form Tractor Boys eventually cruised to a 4-1 victory at Portman Road.

Things were even worse for Fulham, though, as Troy Deeney's hat-trick helped Watford to a resounding 5-0 away victory over the 10-man Cottagers.

As a result, just one point still separates the two sides in the Championship table, although they will both have an eye cast tentatively over their shoulders at those below them.

For Leeds, returning to Elland Road will be a big plus having lost just two games in front of their own fans this season, while their last home outing saw them pick up a very impressive 2-0 victory over league leaders Derby County.

No fewer than 18 of Leeds' 23 points have come at Elland Road this season, a tally that only four teams in the entire division can better.

Neil Redfearn will be particularly pleased with the recent form of Mirco Antenucci, who has scored four goals in his last four games for the club and is expected to lead the line once again this weekend.

His goals have helped to fill the void left by Ross McCormack over the summer, and the Scottish striker will return to Elland Road this weekend for the first time since his departure.

He has not quite found his Leeds form at Craven Cottage yet, though, and that has contributed to a poor first season back in the second tier for the West Londoners.

Kit Symons's side have the worst defensive record in the division having shipped 39 goals in their 20 outings, 27 of which have come on the road. Indeed, they have not kept an away clean sheet for 28 matches now, conceding a whopping 74 goals in the process.

The visitors will be without first-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli this weekend after his red card against Watford, with Gabor Kiraly expected to replace him between the sticks.

Symons could opt to make a couple of other changes too considering the capitulation against the Hornets, with George Williams and Elsad Zverotic among those pushing for starts.

Leeds:

Recent form: LDWLDL

Possible starting lineup: Silvestri; Byram, Cooper, Pearce, Warnock; Cook, Mowatt, Bianchi, Adryan; Doukara, Antenucci

Fulham:

Recent form: DDWLWL

Possible starting lineup: Kiraly; Zverotic, Burn, Bodurov, Stafylidis; Ruiz, Parker, Williams, Christensen; Rodallega, McCormack

Sports Mole says: 2-1

If We Play Him In, He'll Score – Leeds United Boss Salutes Mirco Antenucci For Filling Ross McCormack's Boots

Neil Redfearn believes Mirco Antenucci has done well at Leeds United this season to fill the boots of Ross McCormack.

McCormack scored 29 goals for Leeds last term, but decided to leave the club for fellow Championship side Fulham this summer.

Antenucci joined Leeds from Italian outfit Ternana in August and has already scored eight goals for a side that have struggled to find their footing in tier two of English football this season.

While Redfearn admits that McCormack is an outstanding talent and it would have been difficult for Leeds to replace him, he believes the veteran Italian striker has done well to fill the Scot's boots.

"Ross is an outstanding talent", Redfearn told the club's official site. "He was a great servant to Leeds United, he had a great season last season.

"But I think Mirco is capable of doing the same thing. He's a different type of player, he's a little bit more mobile and he gets in behind people.

"They're both similar, they're both technically gifted and if you stick them in front of goal they can finish."

Redfearn knows that Leeds will have to keep a check on McCormack when they meet Fulham tomorrow, but he is also confident that Antenucci will provide the same kind of threat in the opposition penalty box.

"So we're mindful of that with Ross on Saturday and it's something that we've got to be switched on to.

"But on the other hand as well, we've got to make sure we keep putting Mirco in front of goal. Because if we put him in front of goal enough times he'll score."

Leeds are 16th in the Championship table on 23 points, a point ahead of Fulham in 18th.

Make No Mistake, Fulham Have Players To Hurt Us – Leeds United Boss Neil Redfearn

Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn has stressed that Fulham have enough quality to create problems for his side at Elland Road.

The Whites, who have won five out of their ten home games, host the Cottagers tomorrow, who have won only two on the road this season.

Fulham were relegated from the Premier League last term and their former manager Felix Magath was sacked after a torrid run of results in the Championship.

New manager Kit Symons has managed to keep the Cottagers out of the relegation zone, but they are still struggling to find their feet in the second tier of English football.

Only a point separates Leeds in 16th from Fulham in 18th and the Whites boss knows that Fulham have the quality in their ranks to hurt them tomorrow.

"We are on a good run at home, but Fulham are a good team", Redfearn told LUTV.

"If you look at their team, they have good players, Scott Parker, Ross McCormack, Hugo Rodallega - they are good players.

"If you take them lightly, they are going to hurt us, but at home we are going to concentrate on ourselves."

Next Up: Leeds United

We look ahead to Saturday's meeting with Leeds United at Elland Road (3pm), where victory for Fulham would see us leapfrog our opponents in the table.

The opposition

It's been an eventful season so far for Leeds, having employed three managers since the campaign kicked off. Former Forest Green Rovers boss Dave Hockaday was the surprise appointment for many in the summer, but he wasn't around for too long and was relieved of his duties before the end of August.

Neil Redfearn was installed as caretaker manager and subsequently impressed in the role; taking 10 points from a possible 12 during his four-game stint in charge. Nonetheless he was overlooked for the full-time position, with Darko Milanic the man handed the reins.

The Slovenian lasted just six games in the hot-seat, though, before he was dismissed having failed to win a single match. This time Redfearn was appointed manager in a permanent capacity, with his best result arriving in their previous home match when they defeated high-flying Derby County 2-0.

Indeed, their home form is what has kept them out of the relegation zone this season, with 18 of United's 23 points having been won at Elland Road.

Team news

Leeds' main injury concern going into the game is Giuseppe Bellusci. The defender missed last week's defeat at Ipswich Town, but Redfearn is refusing to rule him out, stating: "I don't think it's a bad strain, there's a tear there, but I don't think it's a bad one. When it comes to selection I'll obviously go on the advice of the physios and if he feels good about himself he'll be up for consideration."

Inside the camp

Neil Redfearn is keen to see his side extend their good home form when Fulham come to visit on Saturday.

United have lost just twice at Elland Road all season but he's expecting a difficult fixture against the South-West London outfit.

"We're on a good run at home but to be fair to Fulham, they're a decent side," he's quoted on leedsunited.com. "If you look through the side, they've got players – Scott Parker, Hugo Rodallega, Ross McCormack – and if you take them lightly, you've got a problem.

"But like I've said all along, whether it's Derby or whoever it is who comes down to Elland Road, I'm more interested in us – what we do and how we perform. It's important that we get that level of performance right and the consistency.

"We've got to try to be as consistent as we can because we know from experience, the more consistent you are, the more results you get and the more points you pick up."

Player to watch

Mirco Antenucci: Since arriving from Ternana for an undisclosed fee in the summer, striker Mirco Antenucci has proven a real hit at Elland Road and currently tops the scoring charts for his new club with eight goals to his name. Half of those have come in his last four outings, and it was his brace that secured the impressive 2-0 win over Derby at the end of November. He was something of a journeyman footballer during his time in his native Italy, taking in spells with no less than nine clubs. He turned 30 at the start of the campaign and is one of several Italian players in the Leeds squad.

Marathonbet match odds

Ross McCormack predicts what his reception will be like on Leeds United return

Fulham striker Ross McCormack will play his first game at Elland Road this leaving Leeds United this summer.

As Ross McCormack prepares for a return to Elland Road after leaving Leeds United in the summer he is under no illusions over what sort of reception he will receive from the home crowd.

McCormack left Leeds to join Fulham in an £11 million transfer this summer and he doubts that the Whites supporters will have forgiven him for leaving.

He believes that he is in for a hostile welcome from the home supporters, but insists that whatever they do will not impact on his performance.

"To be honest, they'll probably boo me, but whatever they want to do doesn't really bother me, they can do what they like," he told Fulham's official site. "I'm a Fulham player now and I want to do my best for this club.

"Obviously I know how big the game is for me personally. It's my old team, it's my old teammates who you want to put one over on, so it's going to be a sweet game."

McCormack was Leeds' stand-out performer last season. The 28-year-old netted 28 times during the 2013/14 campaign for the Yorkshire side and although Mirko Antenucci has made a positive start to replace him, he is not on for quite the same return.

At Fulham the goals have been harder to come by for McCormack, who has had to turn into a more creative influence.

The Scotland international has scored five goals in 22 games for his new side and he will be determined to increase this total on Saturday, as the Cottagers going looking for a vital three points.

Leeds United vs Fulham: Match Preview

We preview Saturday's 3pm game against Fulham at Elland Road, with Ross McCormack set to return to his former club.

These two sides will come into the game with the exact same run of form.

DWLWL...midtable form.

Leeds will be desperate to bounce back after their heavy 4-1 defeat to Ipswich Town last time out, while Fulham were once again put to the sword by Watford who eventually triumphed 5-0 at Craven Cottage.

Boss Neil Redfearn could be without centre-back Giuseppe Bellusci who is still a doubt due to a hamstring injury.

After United's poor display against the Tractor Boys, midfielder Rudy Austin could be pushing for a start as Redfearn looks for more bite in the middle of midfield.

Fulham will no doubt start with former Leeds striker Ross McCormack up top but they will be without goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli. Instead Gabor Kiraly will start with his silly pants on.

Saturday's game will see the two teams meet for the first time since March 2004 and both sides were in the Premier League on that occasion. Fulham won 2-0 that day but Redfearn is confident his side can respond from their defeat last Saturday.

Speaking to the Evening Post earlier this week, Redfearn said:

"We've been playing well at home and I'm mindful of that. Sometimes you can make things worse by trying to make them better.

"Saturday was a game we got beat in heavily but the previous week we had a great result. We kept a clean sheet against a top side so sometimes you have to say it's a bad day at the office and move on.

"We've got a confidence about us (at home) and the game we play fits the majority of the players. It suits us. I'm trying to get us into a league position where we can relax and play out football but the signs are good. They're still good."

Ahead of the game, we gathered the thoughts from some of our writers about their predictions for Saturday's clash.

John Sigal: This match will see two squads meet whose talent hasn't consistently turned into points. Fulham has its fair deal of firepower through Ruiz, Rodallega, and McCormack, but Leeds boasts its own repertoire of attacking players in Antenucci, Doukara, Adryan, and Mowatt.

It'll come down to the defence and Fulham's has been pretty poor this year. Contrastingly, I think Leeds will bounce back from the four goals they leaked in last weekend and pull away with a thrilling 3-2 win.

Anthony Ali: I don't see Redfearn making many changes from the side that played at Ispwich last weekend. Despite getting thrashed by Town, Leeds are a different team at Elland Road. Having scored at least two goals in their last three matches at home, the Whites have been sharper offensively in front of their own fans.

Something to watch for will definitely be Ross McCormack's return to Elland Road. With the Scot having 4 goals and 7 assists on the season, the Whites' defense will have to shake off their recent struggles to contain him. But with Fulham coming in off of a five-goal drubbing at the hands of Watford, I see Leeds taking this one, with a final score of 2-1.

Jake Porritt: I'm expecting a win from Saturday's game. Our away from has been terrible but our home form has been steadily consistent, losing only twice so far this season. The team will be looking to bounce back from last week's poor performance with a win and show that beating top of the table Derby a couple of weeks ago was no fluke.

Fulham have been abysmal away from home and I watched their match against Watford last week and thought they were extremely poor. Obviously the return of Ross McCormack to Elland Road is being hyped up, but him and Rodallega are their biggest threats going forward. But at the back they're missing their no.1 goalkeeper through suspension.

That in itself fills me with confidence for our chances. Kiraly has made four appearances so far this season in which he has let in 17 goals.

If we can get at them early and play like we did against Derby then I can see only one winner in this game. Tickets are selling well, with both the North and South Stands selling out, the atmosphere could be one of the best so far this season.

McCormack - I think the Leeds fans will boo me

Fulham striker Ross McCormack will make his first return to Elland Road on Saturday since his £11 million move in the summer from Leeds and he is not expecting a good reception.

McCormack spent four-years at Leeds, scoring 58 goals in 158 appearances and it was his form last season that saw relegated Fulham come in with a record transfer fee for a Championship player after he scored 29 goals.

The 28-year-old Scot is looking forward to the return and he admits he isn`t worried about the reception. Speaking to the Fulham Official Website , McCormack said, "To be honest, they`ll probably boo me, but whatever they want to do doesn`t really bother me, they can do what they like. I`m a Fulham player now and I want to do my best for this Club."

Since his big money move to West London, McCormack has struggled to find the goalscoring form that saw them come in for him during the summer. McCormack has scored just five goals in twenty-two appearances as the cottagers have struggled to adapt to life in the championship following their relegation from the Premier League.

Sixteenth placed Leeds are currently one position and one point above Fulham has they go into the game on Saturday.

Three key areas Scott Parker is better than Tommaso Bianchi

The Fulham midfielder is more successful going forward - but where does the Leeds man trump him?

Ahead of Leeds United's Championship clash with Fulham tomorrow afternoon, one key area will be a concern for both sides.

Midfield, midfield, midfield.

For hosts Leeds, their midfield unit provides creativity in abundance - but, away from home especially, they sometimes lack steel and physicality down the middle (that may concern them less at Elland Road).

For the Cottagers, it is more about offering their often leaky defence protection down the middle.

And, for both sides, that's where Scott Parker and Tommaso Bianchi come in...

Accurate Passes (per game)   Chances Created   Final-third Passes   Tackles Won   Interceptions Won   Minutes Played
Scott Parker   47.75   0.85   12.7   2.3   1.2   1,700
Tommaso Bianchi   45.37   0.68   8.58   2.89   2.37   1,630
As Opta stats show, both midfielders are comparable - and two trends are immediately clear.

Going forward, Parker is the more successful of the two (marginally). Three key areas he trumps the Italian in are his accurate passes per game, chances created and successful final-third passes (this area is more convincing) per game.

Defensively, however, 26-year-old Bianchi comes off better, averaging more won tackles and interceptions per game.

That perhaps defines both midfielder's roles, suggesting they are, in fact, as good as each other carrying out the instructions given to them. If you want to win the ball back, Bianchi may just be your man. But if you want to turn defence into attack, Parker's the one for the job.

5 THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR AT ELLAND ROAD THIS SATURDAY

Fulham and our former skipper and talisman Ross McCormack are in town tomorrow and will be looking to bounce back after a heavy defeat last weekend. Also, Leeds will be looking to get back to winning ways and in style. Alex Mulvey takes a look at the five things you need to look out for tomorrow..

The Reaction - Both teams suffered heavy defeats last weekend after encouraging signs of improvement, following a not too dissimilar start to the season. Leeds were basically on the coach back from Ipswich after 5 minutes and after Fulham lost Marcus Bettinelli 20 minutes in, they didn't look like they had the belief to dig in and get something from the game. Both managers will want a quick reaction to get them back on track for the busy Christmas period.

The Diamond - Much has been said about the diamond used at Leeds in the last 18 months or so, but rarely have we come up against a team who play pretty much the same system. Width has proved to be a key factor is beating teams who play the narrow formation, so a lot could depend of both teams fullbacks bombing forward.

The Return of Ross - After four years of banging in goals at Leeds, McCormack will return to Elland Road for the first time since moving down south in an 11 million pound deal. It remains to be seen who got the better deal from that transfer but after scoring so many goals on this patch over the last few seasons, Ross will be confident about reminding United just what they're missing. Although he left under a cloud, let's hope people remember what he did for us and he gets a good reception.

The Number 10's - With both sides struggling for genuine width, the middle of the park is sure to be crowded and packed with bodies: Bryan Ruiz and Adryan will most likely start for their teams and they will be expected to find the space and make things happen. Adryan is starting to come into his own now and Ruiz has shown glimpses of his World Cup form, so it should be an intriguing battle.

The Joggers - Gabor Kiraly didn't have the best of times when he came on last week again Watford, conceding five goals, luckily those grey tracksuit bottoms took a few headlines away from his goalkeeping. I'm sure Antenucci et al will be looking forward to the prospect of facing the experienced stopper just as much as the Kop and South Stand will be looking forward to ripping into him!

How does Leeds wonderkid Cook compare to Fulham youngster Christensen?

Leeds United star Lewis Cook could go head-to-head against Fulham youngster Lasse Vigen Chirstensen this weekend.

Leeds United host Fulham this weekend in a match between two sides similarly placed in the Championship but with very different squads.

Two players who are relatively similar are Leeds United teenager Lewis Cook and Fulham wonderkid Lasse Vigen Christensen, with each youngster likely to have a say on who walks away with all three points.

So how do the prize young assets of each team compare?

Christensen is ahead in terms of goals and assists but that can be explained by the fact he plays with a lot more freedom in the Fulham attack.

Cook is showing great maturity beyond his years in knowing when to step off of the gas and produced a more disciplined midfield performance for his club.

One area Cook is slightly ahead is in terms of interceptions this season, which suggests he's showing a greater intelligence level in terms of being able to read the play.

However, Christensen is ahead on tackles, which shouldn't be too much of a surprise considering he's an older player who is slightly stronger and more physically developed.

Christensen is also ahead of Cook in terms of the pair's accurate passing stats this season, which suggests he's protecting possession more effectively in a more advanced area of the pitch.

Cook has made more appearances but has played fewer minutes, which shows Fulham have stuck with their 20-year-old through a difficult opening to the season. It will be fascinating to see who comes out on top this weekend.
