Jol explains Fulham lure
Dutchman cannot wait for England return

Martin Jol has revealed why he is planning to leave Ajax to return to the Premier League with Fulham.

Fulham have targeted former Tottenham boss Jol to succeed Roy Hodgson at Craven Cottage following the Englishman's departure to Liverpool.
The Cottagers are thought to be thrashing out a compensation deal with Ajax for Jol and hope to have their new man on board before Thursday's pre-season friendly with Halmstad.

Jol insists the Fulham job is too good to turn down because he is unsure of Ajax's future as they plan to sell some of their best players.

"On Thursday evening Fulham contacted me. Fulham said they wanted me as their new manager and they contacted Ajax," Jol told the Daily Mirror.

"The Premier League is the best competition in the world, and I like London very much. Fulham is a great opportunity.

Worried

"The way it is going at Ajax we cannot play for the title, or the biggest prizes.
"For the past two weeks I have been very worried about what is going to happen with Ajax.

"In the past they have paid too much for not so good players and now they have no money to invest in the squad."

English Premier League: Martin Jol A Favorite To Take Over At Fulham
The former Tottenham boss, Martin Jol is a favorite to take up the manager's job at Fulham. Fulham lost their previous manager Roy Hodgson, to Liverpool as the Englishman took over at Liverpool earlier on in the summer.
Hodgson did remarkably well with Fulham as he took them to the Europa League final which the London club lost eventually to the Spanish club Athletico Madrid. Hodgson also maintained a top half premier league spot for Fulham and even managed to defeat the reigning English champions of 2008-2009 season, Manchester United, by a score line of three goals to nil at craven cottage.
Martin Jol is currently at the Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam. Jol took them to a second placed finish in the Dutch football league and has helped the club develop recent World Cup stars such as Van Der Weil, Luis Suarez and Maarten Stekelenburg. Ajax Amsterdam is a renowned for developing young stars through its youth academy. Previously, Ajax has blessed football with talents such as Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Johann Cruyff and Clarence Seedorf.
However, unfortunately because of Dutch league's lower financial appeal than the Spanish and English leagues, Ajax have had to sell their superstars to higher bidders in other more commercially active European leagues. Ajax, therefore has been termed as a selling club.
Arnold Muhren, who was part of Ajax's youth setup under Martin Jol in the 2009-2010 season lately come out and told the press that, Martin Jol is quite unhappy at Ajax because of the clubs selling attitude. Recently at the World Cup, Luis Suarez played brilliantly for the Uruguayan national team. Suarez has turned into a lethal goal poacher under Martin Jol at Ajax and scored around 35 goals last season.
Other Ajax stars include the young Dutch right back, Van Der Weil who played in the FIFA 2010 World Cup final for Netherlands. Van Der Weil's team mate Maarten Stekelenburg also plays at Ajax and has been refined into a fine goalkeeper for Ajax under Jol's guidance.
Muhren said that, Martin Jol wants to sign another striker at Ajax but the club officials have told him that they will not give him any transfer money unless he agrees to sell some of the club's current stars. Muhren also added that, Jol's negotiations with Fulham F.C have already begun.
Ex-Ajax youth coach went onto say that, Jol might be thinking that Fulham is much more of an opportunity for him because they made the Europa league final last season. He also stated that, if the Dutchman thinks he does not possess the squad at Ajax to challenge other teams for the title in the Dutch league, then he might opt for Fulham.
Commenting on Martin Jol's capabilities as a manager, Muhren said that Jol did brilliantly at Spurs and at Hamburg as well. He also said that Martin Jol has a good reputation in Holland because he just lost the league title by just one point in the 2009-2010 season.

COULD JOL REJECT FULHAM?
Is Martin Jol having second thoughts about joining Fulham? The Times thinks he might be.

The paper says that the Dutchman was in talks last night with Ajax as the club try to convince him to stay. It also describes Jol as 'worried that Hodgson may have overachieved by making up for the squad limitations with good organisation, as Fulham finished seventh two seasons ago and reached the Europa League final last season' and 'concerned' that moving to Craven Cottage would be a 'step down'.

Jol himself is reported to have confirmed on Monday night that: "The Premier League is the best competition in the world and I like London very much. Fulham is a great opportunity. The way it is going at Ajax we cannot play for the title or the biggest prizes."

OR WILL HE JOIN TO CHASE KEANE, JAMES, SIDWELL AND IRELAND?
Elsewhere, however, Jol's appointment is being talked up as a done deal to the extent that the papers are already discussing his transfer targets.

'Martin Jol is likely to make a bid for the Tottenham striker Robbie Keane if, as expected, he takes over at Fulham this week. The Dutchman managed Keane at White Hart Lane and has been promised about £20m to spend on transfers should he accept the job at Craven Cottage,' says The Guardian.

A concurring Independent adds that 'Keane, 30, would be available for a fee of around £6m, although Fulham are likely to face competition from Aston Villa for the striker's signature.

'Jol could also have to find a new goalkeeper should Mark Schwarzer move to Arsenal, with England keeper David James a potential short-term option. Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell is another possible recruit, for a fee of £2m.'

And the Daily Mirror reckons that Jol is 'is keen on rivalling Aston Villa for Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland.'

MARTIN JOL TO JOIN FULHAM WITH MASSIVE TRANSFER KITTY

MARTIN JOL will be unveiled as Fulham boss before Thursday's friendly with Halmstad – and is bringing his brother with him.

The Cottagers flew to Sweden yesterday to begin their pre-season tour with caretaker boss Ray Lewington still in charge.

But Lewington's future is now in doubt because Jol wants his brother Cornelis to join him at Craven Cottage as assistant coach.

Former Tottenham boss Jol is also bringing fitness coach Mike Lindemann with him from Amsterdam.

The trio helped Ajax finish second in the Dutch league last season behind Steve McClaren's FC Twente.

Fulham are expected to pay Ajax £1.2m in compensation for Jol, who has agreed terms of around £2m a year with the west Londoners.

Arnold Muhren was a youth coach under Jol last season and claims that Jol is being forced out because of a lack of backing in the transfer market.

Former Manchester United star Muhren said: "Fulham is a good club. They reached the Europa League final last year.

"Maybe he is thinking there are better prospects for him at Fulham. His record speaks for itself.

"He did well at Spurs and did well at Hamburg before leaving them for the same reason he wants to leave Ajax now – he wasn't getting enough support.

"I know Martin is unhappy at Ajax because he wants to buy new players – but because the club lost £18m last year,  they won't let him.

"There are a lot of players they want to sell.

''He wants to bring new players in, but they won't let him without selling players first. There is no other money to spend. I wouldn't blame him if he left."

Jol has been told by Fulham owner Mohamed Al Fayed that transfer funds will be made available at Craven Cottage.

Al Fayed has just pocketed £1.5bn from the sale of Harrods and is keen to hand a sizeable transfer kitty to Roy Hodgson's successor.

Steve was spot on
S TEVE Coppell's analysis of England's shameful performance in the World Cup was spot on and increases my admiration of him.

Sadly, his prediction that nothing will change will probably prove correct. Big money will see to that and the FA will be impotent against the moguls. Like the banks, failure and incompetence is highly rewarded.

The whole charade was started by Tommy Trinder as the chairman of Fulham, who decided to pay Johnny Haynes £100 per week when everyone else got £10. He was a comedian.

The Premier League managers who control the quality of the England squad, paradoxically, have no interest in the national team, their only concerns being the Saturday league fixture and their club's position in the table.

Capello should be retained; he picked the best squad available. The humiliated fans must now vote with their feet. If Alex Ferguson and co came out to a crowd of 5,000 in the first match of the season things would change. Otherwise I fear the beautiful game will become just another victim of the poisonous philosophy of capitalism.

Dave Macnab,

Whitchurch.

Idiot. I hate reading anything that suggests the abolition of the maximum wage in football was a bad thing. Freakin idiot.

GSM) - Fulham will have to look further for their new coach: their No 1 target Martin Jol has decided to stay at Ajax.

Yesterday it was reported Fulham were negotiating with Jol and his representative. Today, De Telegraaf says the Dutch coach has decided to stay true to Ajax after talks with the management last night.

Jol has vowed to stay at the Amsterdam side despite the firm interest of Fulham. However, the former Tottenham manager has urged Ajax to invest in the squad because he believes this is necessary to compete at the top this season.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

Martin Jol is prepared to snub Fulham and remain at Ajax, providing the club allow him to strengthen the squad this summer.

Jol is reportedly Fulham's first choice to replace Roy Hodgson, who has joined Liverpool, but the Dutchman has hinted he will remain in Amsterdam after talks with the Ajax hierarchy.

"They (Fulham) were interested but in principle I will stay at Ajax," Jol told Amsterdam-based newspaper De Telegraaf.

Jol had been told he was not able to recruit this summer until Holland right-back Gregory van der Wiel and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez had departed - freeing up funds.

But, following talks with financial director Jeroen Slop and chief executive Rik van den Boog, Jol has been reassured he can bring in a cheap right-wing option and then spend more if the likes of Van der Wiel and Suarez leave.

The plan needs to be approved by the club's supervisory board - headed by Uri Coronel - but that is unlikely to be a problem after they recruited Jol just a year ago.

Martin Jol relishing Fulham move to splash cash at Craven Cottage

Frustrated: Jol was hampered at Ajax
Martin Jol admitted he jumped at the chance to join Fulham as he will be able to spend some money.
Jol spent Monday afternoon in Holland with Fulham officials finalising his move from Ajax, despite the Dutch side making a last-ditch attempt to keep him.
But the former Tottenham manager, sacked at White Hart Lane three years ago, had no intention of staying in Amsterdam due to his frustration at losing his best players.
He will be handed a £20million transfer kitty at Craven Cottage as owner Mohamed Al Fayed looks ahead to life without Roy Hodgson, now in charge of Liverpool.
'On Thursday evening Fulham contacted me. Fulham said they wanted me as their new manager and they contacted Ajax,' said Jol.
'The Premier League is the best competition in the world, and I like London very much. Fulham is a great opportunity.

Martin Jol has revealed he is set to snub Fulham to stay with Dutch giants Ajax.

Former Tottenham manager Jol was expected to be named the Fulham boss this week after holding talks with the West London club about succeeding Roy Hodgson at Craven Cottage.

Jol had earlier indicated he was prepared to leave Ajax and move to Fulham because of uncertainty over the futures of a number of star players at Ajax.

However, it appears Jol has agreed to stick with Ajax after last-ditch talks with the club's hierarchy.

"They (Fulham) were interested but in principle I will stay at Ajax," Jol told De Telegraaf.

The news will come as a blow to Fulham as they had thought they had landed their man to replace Hodgson and means they will have go back to the drawing board as they search for a new manager.

As someone said, it seems like he was just trying to get the Ajax hierarchy to pull their finger out. Hope it's not like that but surely he wouldn't leave Ajax for us. Curbishley might be getting a phone call after all...

Jol Closes the Door on The Cottage

It's claimed this morning that Martin Jol has agreed in principle to stay on at Ajax. Reports from Holland say Jol will turn down the advances of Fulham if Ajax give him a fighting fund to bolster his panel this summer. It was thought Jol would make an offer for his former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – if he were to make the switch to the Cottage – that now looks unlikely. Sven Goran Eriksson now appears to be the front runner to replace Roy Hodgson.

Elsewhere in the transfer market today – another of Keane's possible suitors – Aston Villa – are thought to be on the verge of making a €12 million offer for the Celtic winger Aiden McGeady. Martin O'Neill's hoping to be reunited with his former Parkhead player.

Meanwhile Man City have rubbished reports by the agent of Chelsea striker Didier Drogba that his client was the subject of a €23 million bid by the Sky Blues.

FULHAM FEARS OVER JOL

20.07.2010 at 10:08 am | Posted In: Football Betting, Sport Betting News with No Comments

Fulham's hopes of appointing Martin Jol as the new manager at Craven Cottage for the new Premier League season (Fulham 8/1 To Be Relegated) have been hit by the news the Dutchman will consider the prospect of staying at Ajax.

The former Tottenham boss looked certain to take over at Craven Cottage this week, after becoming disillusioned at the Amsterdam Arena.

Jol is understood to have been told that he could not have any transfer funds unless Dutch right-back Gregory van der Wiel and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez were sold this summer.

However, Jol has now held talks with Ajax's financial director Jeroen Slop and chief executive Rik van den Boog, where it is reported he was told he could bring in a right winger.

It appears that Jol may have been satisfied by the board agreeing to his demands and is set to leave Fulham back to square one in their search for a new boss, ahead of the side's Premier League opener at Bolton (Fulham 7/4, Bolton 5/4, draw 9/4 – Match Betting) on August 14.

"They (Fulham) were interested but in principle I will stay at Ajax," Jol told Amsterdam-based newspaper De Telegraaf.

Jol targets Spurs striker as Confusion takes hold over Fulham job

Robbie Keane may not be the most popular figure at Spurs at the moment, but he sure is still an appealing target to his former manager Martin Jol who is said to have set eyes on a reunion with the Irish man at the Cottage after Jol's contract with Fulham has been signed and sealed.

The Dutchman has been promised the sum of £20m be made available for him to invest in the current transfer market, and the Daily Mail claims Jol is set to make Keane his 1st buy.

Keane's valuation in the market has dropped from £18+ million to just £5m in the last 3 years in which he was transfered numerous times but never managed to settle in one place. First he moved out from the Lane to Anfield, couldn't blend, found his way back to Spurs but couldn't regain his place in the starting line-up. He then went off to Celtic on loan and he left his mark with the Glasgow based club although they still lost the SPL title race by a big margin, and now -back at Spurs- Keano was waiting for Aston Villa's Martin O'Neill to come for his rescue before Jol volunteered for the job.

It is still unclear though as to whether Jol will be appointed at the Cottage in the 1st place. The Dutchman did an apparent U-turn stunt on Monday afternoon stating he will stay at Ajax 'in principle' leaving everyone at a loss of what exactly he was up to next.

Ajax coach Martin Jol still in frame to be Fulham boss

Martin Jol is still weighing up whether to become Fulham boss, despite reports in the Netherlands that he has agreed to stay with Ajax "in principle".
Fulham held talks with the 54-year-old Dutchman and hoped to appoint him as Roy Hodgson's successor this week.
Officials from the Premier League club are in Amsterdam attempting to secure the services of their top target.
The deal may hinge on whether Ajax will let Jol keep his star players and provide funds for new signings.
Jol had been told he was not able to recruit this summer until Netherlands right-back Gregory van der Wiel and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez had departed to free up funds.

There were also suggestions that Dutch international goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg could be leaving the Amsterdam Arena.
It would appear that situation has now changed but Fulham remain hopeful of landing the former Tottenham manager.
Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson had also been linked with the vacancy at Craven Cottage, while United States coach Bob Bradley and Switzerland's Ottmar Hitzfeld were other names in the running.
Eriksson is thought to have held talks with Fulham but the Swede revealed last week that he was considering a lucrative offer to stay on as Ivory Coast head coach.
Hitzfeld then ruled himself out of contention and a statement from the United States Soccer Federation outlined its intention to extend Bradley's current contract.
Jol, who was sacked by Spurs in October 2007, still owns a house in England and the Dutchman has reportedly been offered a rolling contract.
Although Fulham reached the Europa League final in May, Ajax will be playing Champions League football in September providing they come through qualifying.
They were pipped to the Dutch league title last season by FC Twente, who were managed by former England boss Steve McClaren.

Fulham target Martin Jol happy to remain with Ajax 'in principle' if funds are available
Dutchman had clashed with board over transfer kitty...

Martin Jol looks set to spurn Fulham and remain at Ajax after a showdon meeting over the club's available transfer budget.

The Dutchman - reportedly Fulham's main target to takeover from Roy Hodgson - is worried at the potential mass of key players leaving Ajax with no funds being made available to bring in any new talent.

But both parties have come to a solution and Jol told the Telegraaf: "They [Fulham] were interested, but in principle I will stay at Ajax."

On Monday Jol had admitted to being tempted with a move to west London and revealed he had been in contact with the Cottagers.

"On Thursday evening Fulham contacted me. Fulham said they wanted me as their new manager and they contacted Ajax," Jol told The Daily Mirror.

"The Premier League is the best competition in the world, and I like London very much. Fulham is a great opportunity.

"The way it is going at Ajax we cannot play for the title, or the biggest prizes," he added.

"For the past two weeks I have been very worried about what is going to happen with Ajax.

"In the past they have paid too much for not so good players and now they have no money to invest in the squad."

After the inevitable sale of Gregory van der Wiel to Bayern Munich, Jol will push to bring in a striker and a winger, or it least one, in time for the Champions League qualifier against PAOK Salonika next week.

His funds are very much restricted to bargains and free transfer but Jol is satisfied he can at least re-strengthen the team, having been linked with former players Tom de Mul - now at Sevilla - and Wigan's Daniel de Ridder.

This, however, is yet to be cleared by the board, and if they reject the requests of the manager he could still yet leave.
