Eight Championship players included in England under-21 Euro squad

Eight Championship youngsters have been named in the England under-21 squad for the upcoming Euro Under-21's competition.
Hughes is in the squad

Hughes is in the squad

Marcus Bettinelli, Jonathan Bond, Ben Gibson, Will Hughes, Jake Forster-Caskey, Nathan Redmond, Benik Afobe and Cauley Woodrow have all been named in the provisional 27 man squad, which will be cut down to 23.

Marcus Bettinelli has just finished his breakthrough campaign at Fulham and is currently being watched by Chelsea after some top performances for the Whites.

Jonathan Bond maybe Watford's second team keeper, but that doesn't distract from the fact that he's a top talent.

Ben Gibson has had a magnificent season at Middlesbrough, making up the best defence in the Championship, he'll be hoping to lead Boro to the Premier League in the play off final.

Will Hughes has had another fantastic season at Derby County and was named the Rams' player of the season this year.

Jake Forster-Caskey has had better seasons with Brighton but has been a regular in the England under-21 set up for a few years.

Nathan Redmond was subject to interest from Southampton last summer but no deal came to fruition. He's had a super season at Norwich and could fire them to the Premier League in the play -ff final.

Benik Afobe has had the best season of his career at MK Dons and Wolves respectively, joining the latter from Arsenal in January. With a total of 32 goals scored this season, he'll surely make the cut for the competition.

Cauley Woodrow hasn't had a brilliant season for Fulham and after appearing 25 times for the Whites he's only scored 3 times.

The number of call ups demonstrates the amount of talent in the Championship at the moment, and we at FLW wish all the players the best of luck this summer!

Our young goalkeeper, Marcus Bettinelli and our young striker Cauley Woodrow have both earned places in the squad.

Fulham's Cauley Woodrow reveals what led to England call-up

Fulham striker set to swap one white shirt for another

Goal! Cauley Woodrow scores against Derby

The reward for a fine season in the face of adversity is an England U21 call-up for Marcus Bettinelli and Cauley Woodrow.

The Fulham pair have been named this morning in the preliminary England Under-21 squad for the upcoming European Championship in the Czech Republic.

Manager Gareth Southgate has named an initial 27-man party, but will whittle it down to 23 for the summer tournament which kicks off on June 17.

Bettinelli has been linked with a move to Chelsea, but is already talking an extended contract with the Whites, while striker Woodrow admits it's been a year to remember (see video).

Last season, he was struggling to get games with League Two Southend on loan, but then made his Premier League debut before swapping striker duties with Ross McCormack, Hugo Rodallega and Matt Smith in a struggling Championship campaign.

He said: "Southend was just about getting experience and it was good for me.

"I played a few games and scored a few goals.

"When I was recalled I and to get my mind set on playing Premier League. It's been a good year, but I'm still developing and hope I can go on from there."

England's final warm-up match will see them face Belarus at Barnsley's Oakwell on Thursday 11th June, in preparation for their Group Stage fixtures against Portugal, Sweden and Italy.

Where Are They Now - Barry Hayles

This edition of the Where Are They Now series delves back to more recent times with a look at the career of Barry Hayles.

BARRY HAYLES - Born 17th April 1972 Lambeth, London.

Born with the impressive name of Barrington Edward Hayles he was more commonly known wherever he played as Barry, he began his football career with Willesden Hawkeye in his native London in the early 1990's before joining Stevenage Borough in February 1994, who were then playing in the Isthmian League.

Barry soon became a prolific goal scorer and in 1995-96 helped his team to win promotion to the Conference, unfortunately they were denied promotion as their ground wasn't up to League standards. He stayed another season at Broadhall Way before his goal scoring abilities were recognised by Bristol Rovers manager Ian Holloway and on 1st August 1997 he signed for them for a fee of £250,000.
While at Stevenage Barry made 154 appearances scoring 73 goals.

Barry made his league debut aged 25 in the opening game of the season, and it was a scoring debut as well, against Argyle, fortunately for the Greens a Mick Heathcote goal saw the game end in a 1-1 draw. At the end of his first league season Barry was the Division 2 leading goal scorer with 23 goals. Rovers reached the play offs but were beaten 4-3 on aggregate by Northampton.
Barry continued to score goals at the start of the 1998-99 season and on 18th November a bid of £2 million from Fulham was enough to persuade Holloway to let him go after making 79 appearances and scoring 38 goals.

He continued to terrorise defenders and soon became a fans favourite as his goals helped Fulham to win promotion to Division 1 in his first season. After only two seasons Fulham were promoted again in 2000-01 with Barry scoring 19 goals as they reached the Premier League.
Despite playing against the best defenders in the country Barry still scored 12 goals. After three seasons of Premiership football Barry, now 32, was released on a free transfer and after 214 appearances where he scored 57 goals he joined Sheffield United.

Barry never settled in Sheffield and after only five appearances moved back to London with Millwall for a fee of £25,000.
Back in his home city Barry rediscovered his scoring form and despite spending the first two months of the season in Yorkshire still managed to score 12 goals for the Lions.
Although a first team regular in his next season he only managed 5 goals.
At the start of the 2006-07 season new Argyle manager Ian Holloway decided even at 34 Barry was worth the £100,000 he offered Millwall and he jumped at the chance of joining up with the manager who had given him his first shot at League football and on 20th July 2006 Barry moved to Home Park.

Barry made an instant impact, scoring on his debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Wolves. The following Saturday he added to his tally in a superb 3-2 win at Sunderland, who finished the season as champions, Barry scored in between goals from David Norris and Nick Chadwick. Ten days later in a first round League Cup game against Walsall Barry was rested with an eighteen year old Reuben Reid making his Argyle debut in his place.
The following Saturday Barry returned to first team duties and scored the Argyle goal in a 1-1 draw at Stoke who were managed by previous Argyle manager Tony Pulis.
Barry's next goal came in one of the best fightbacks ever seen at Home Park, visitors Cardiff had cruised into a 3-0 lead before two own goals and the other from Barry sent the Argyle fans in the 11,655 crowd home with an unexpected point.
His next three goals all came in 2-2 draws, the first at Barnsley after Sylvan Ebanks-Blake (SEB), who was learning a lot from his more experienced strike partner, scored the first. Barry got the second goal at Leicester after Lilian Nalis had opened the scoring.
The same two players teamed up to score against West Brom at Home Park.

On New Year's Day Barry got the goal in a 1-1 draw at home to Southampton. Two weeks later Barry scored the first goal in a 3-1 win over Norwich with Akos Buzsacky scoring two near identical free kicks to ensure Argyle recorded a rare win at Carrow Road. Barry then scored in the next two games, the first in a FA Cup third round replay against Peterborough with David Norris getting the winner in a 2-1 victory.
In the next game a 3-2 win against Coventry, also at Home Park, Barry scored again with Kevin Gallen and Akos Buzsaky also on the scoresheet. His next goal came in a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Leicester with Peter Halmosi and SEB also scoring. In the last two home games of the season Barry and SEB both scored the goals first in a 2-1 win over Southend and the following Saturday they won 2-0 against Preston. Barry ended the season as leading goal scorer with fourteen goals with SEB getting ten.

Although Barry remained a regular first team player during the 2007-08 season he didn't score as many goals, although he regularly set them up for others and continued to give opposing defenders trouble with his direct bustling style of play.
He scored his first of the season on 25th August in a 3-2 defeat at Barnsley with Nick Chadwick scoring the other Argyle goal. His other goal came in a memorable evening at the Valley in a 2-1 win over Charlton, after SEB had opened the scoring Charlton equalised with Barry getting the winner in front of the 2000 strong travelling Green Army, not bad support for a mid week game.
Exactly a month after that game despite repeated denials Ian Holloway left the club to manage Leicester.
Barry played his last game for Argyle on Boxing Day in a 2-1 win at home to QPR with two goals from SEB securing the points.
On 31st December after playing 66 games and scoring 16 goals Barry joined Holloway at Leicester, initially on an emergency loan before signing an 18 month contract on 2nd January with Argyle receiving a fee of £150,000.

He made his debut on New Year's Day in a 3-1 defeat at Loftus Road playing against QPR. He scored his first goal for Leicester in a 2-0 win over Coventry. His only other goal came when he scored in a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace. At the end of the season, much to the delight to the majority of Argyle fans Holloway's team were relegated.

Barry spent the start of the 2008-09 season on a months loan to Cheltenham, this was extended for a second month before he returned to Leicester. In November Barry went back to Cheltenham for a third month. When he returned to his parent club he had a run in the first team and although he didn't score any more goals still earn't his medal as Leicester finished the season as League 1 champions.
Barry was released from his contract on 13th July 2009 and joined Cheltenham on a permanent basis.

Barry played for Cheltenham 54 times scoring 11 goals before leaving The club at the end of the 2009-10 season to return to the Westcountry to join Truro City who were playing in the Southern Premier Division, in his first season he made 46 appearances and scored 20 goals helping Truro win promotion to the Conference South.

At the end of the following season he left the Cornish team to join St.Albans City back in the Southern Premier Division.
Halfway through the season Barry returned to Truro for the remainder of the season. He was on the move again at the start of the 2013-14 season when he joined Arlesey Town, after spending the season with them he once again returned to Truro for the 2014-15 season forming a strike partnership with former Argyle player Isaac Vassell.
Despite Barry commuting 550 miles a week from his home in Kent the pair scored 24 goals between them.
Unfortunately Barry broke his hand in March missing out on Truro winning promotion through the play off final. The season ended with Barry, now 42 being released.

As well as a successful club career Barry also played eleven times for Jamaica between 2000 and 2003. In 1995 he was selected to play in a FA (non league) XI and in 1996 played twice for England in National Games.

Fulham boss reveals 'numerous meetings' with agents ahead of busy transfer window

Fulham manager Kit Symons says he has already held talks with agents and other clubs about potential summer transfer dealings. The Whites are set for a busy offseason after they finished a disappointing 17th in the Championship and Symons is expected to oversee an overhaul of the squad. The likes of Hugo Rodallega and Tim Hoogland are out of contract in the summer while loanees Konstantinos Stafylidis, Michael Turner, Danny Guthrie and James Husband will all return to their parent clubs. Symons is sure to dip into the transfer market to replace the outgoing players, and he says the club have already started working towards bringing in some new faces. "There's going to be numerous meetings with agents," he told Fulham's official website. "We have started already. We're permanently in meetings with the agents of our existing players and also of potential players who could be coming in. "It's a busy time. We're contacting other clubs, players and agents. We want to get as much work done early as possible. "It's difficult because ideally everyone wants their business done as early as they can, but quite often players can have two or three clubs they play off each other. "But we are well-prepared, we have a good strategy in place and starting our business now gives us a chance. If we can get one or two over the line early that takes the pressure off." Perhaps Symons' most important piece of business this summer could be holding on to young forward Patrick Roberts. The 18-year-old, who can play on the right flank or behind the striker, has been attracting the interest of Manchester United and Manchester City and a £10m move could potentially be on the cards.

Former Fulham man Hoos joins QPR as CEO

QPR have named Burnley's Lee Hoos as their new chief executive.

The 53-year-old American is leaving Turf Moor after three and a half years with the Clarets and will officially start his new job before the start of the new season.

Hoos has also been CEO at Southampton and Leicester City and previously spent eight years on the board of Fulham. He replaces Philip Beard, who lost his job as QPR chief executive in February.

Burnley say Hoos was keen to return to London for family reasons.

"Lee was the stand-out individual from a very impressive list of candidates we spoke to during an extensive interview process, so I'm delighted he's accepted the role of CEO," said Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes.

"He has experience of working in football, which was key. He's been responsible for creating and implementing strategies across all areas at his previous clubs, as well as overseeing the day-to-day running of the business, so he is exactly what we were looking for."

Hoos told Rangers' website he was "excited about working for QPR and added: "This is a challenge, but one I'm going to relish."

American Lee Hoos has been appointed QPR chief executive in place of Phil Beard who departed in March.

The 53 year-old from Baltimore makes the switch from Burnley, where he held the CEO position since December 2011.

Before that, he oversaw the fortunes at Leicester City and Southampton when they were in financial doldrums, but cut his football teeth at Fulham under Mohamed Al Fayed starting in 1998, after swapping Harrods for the Cottage.

Hoos sale: Chris Baird remonstrates with QPR's Sandro last season

Hoos was responsible for among other things, the £3 milion sale of Chris Baird to Fulham from Southampton in 2007.

In a previous interview at Burnley, he gave a taste of what is to come at Loftus Road.

"Player pay-roll is the single biggest expense that we have by a long, long shot," he said.

"Part of my job coming in here was to rationalise the pay bill. It's simply trying to get the most bang for your buck.

"Market conditions have been somewhat helpful because there's quite a few players, with the transition and financial fair play and that helps me in some ways with negotiations."

Plenty to smile about? QPR chairman Tony Fernandes and director of football Les Ferdinand

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes believes Hoos' arrival completes the new-look senior management set-up at the club.

He said: "Lee was the stand-out individual from a very impressive list of candidates we spoke to during an extensive interview process, so I'm delighted he's accepted the role of CEO."

Hoos added: "I'm fully aware of the transitional phase this club is going through following its relegation to the Championship, but I am encouraged about the vision of the owners.

"I'd like to think I've proved myself over the years I've been in the game. I've worked at four clubs now and gained lots of experience."

Wolves to beat Championship rivals Fulham to Portsmouth's Jed Wallace

HITC Sport understands Wolves have stolen a march on Fulham in the race to sign Portsmouth's Jed Wallace, with the player due for a medical at Molineux.

HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that Portsmouth midfielder Jed Wallace is set for a medical at Wolverhampton Wanderers as they look to beat Championship rivals Fulham to the player's signature.

Portsmouth are resigned to losing their prized asset this summer, with Wallace admitting that he wants to try his luck higher up the ladder rather than spend another season in League Two with Portsmouth.

Wallace has earned himself a reputation as one of the best prospects in the country after impressing for Portsmouth since breaking into the team in 2012 as an 18-year-old.

The all-action midfielder has finished as Portsmouth's top scorer in the last two seasons, and his performances have attracted the interest of clubs higher up the football pyramid.

Wolves have been monitoring Wallace for some time and expressed an interest in securing his services during the January transfer window.

SEE ALSO: Fulham lead the chase for Portsmouth star

Fulham were thought to be leading the chase for Wallace this summer, but Wolves have moved quickly to try and tie up a deal for the former England Under 19 international.

Wolves are thought to have activated Wallace's release clause in his contract, allowing them to hold talks with the player, and if he comes through the medical successfully, he will become Kenny Jackett's first signing of the summer.

Would Wallace be a good signing for Wolves?

Fulham set to beat Wolves to the signing of talented 21-year-old midfielder

Wolverhampton Wanderers are also trying to sign the midfielder who's scored 17 times in League Two this season.

Wallace is beginning to look like one of the brightest prospects in the Football League, and it is no surprise to see a number of clubs interested.

Kit Symons is looking to reform his Fulham side with Football League talent, with players who are used to English football after their foreign signings last year thoroughly disappointed.

They're competing with sides who finished higher then them in the table last year to top signings, such as Lewis Dunk.

Kenny Jackett's Wolves side have also reportedly tabled a bid for him, but the Whites are still ahead in the chase.

Wolves had a super season after promotion from League One, narrowly missing out on the play-offs on goal difference. They're aiming for automatic promotion this year and are looking to add more quality to their side.

Fulham finished in seventeenth in the Championship accumulating 52 points, whilst Wolves finished seventh amassing 78 points.
