Fulham Fighting to Keep Hold of Dembele

In the past we`ve highlighted the fact that one of the main things Fulham Football Club has to do in the coming months is to hang on to their excellent youngsters.

I`ve no doubt that cheques, of various amounts, will be dangled as the Premier League clubs try to reap the benefit of all the hard work our academy has done in bringing the youngsters through.

The latest youngster to be a possible target for a Premier League club is 18-year-old Moussa Dembele, with it being implied that Everton have already made contact about a possible move.

Dembele has limited Premier league experience making his Premier League debut, ironically, against Everton.

But, with just a year left on his contract and rumours of no talks about a new one being discussed yet, Everton could get lucky and sign the player that arrived at Craven Cottage, from Paris St-Germain back in 2012.

But we`re also hearing that there are other clubs interested in the 18-year-old with Feyenoord and Genoa also said to be monitoring developments

Fulham After Blackburn Midfielder

It`s hoped that, this summer, Fulham Football Club will use any transfer kitty available wisely.

After a poor first season back in the Championship, after dropping out of the Premier League, the Craven Cottage faithful are hoping next season can see a promotion campaign launched.

This summer it`ll be interesting to see who Kit Symons decides can improve the squad.

Today rumours are doing the rounds that one target Kit may have identified is Tom Cairney.

Cairney is a midfielder who has been on the books of Blackburn Rovers, but previously played for Hull City.

We`ll keep an eye on the transfer gossip columns over the coming days to see if Fulham make any headway with regards to this particular possible signing.

Fulham (And Others) Interested in Richards

Last season, in what were difficult times as we dallied with the possibility of back-to-back relegations, Fulham took a Swansea defender on loan.

The defender in question being Jazzy Richards.

Richards made 14 appearances for Fulham whilst on loan from the Welsh club and impressed Kit Symons with his performances and attitude.

Rumours suggest that with just a year left on his contract Richards could be available on a permanent deal and looking to play regular first-team football.

However, if Kit is interested in making some kind of deal with Swansea to sign the player on a permanent basis then he faces competition from two other Championship clubs in the shape of Queens Park Rangers and Derby County.

We`ll keep you posted if we hear any further information.

Championship season review: Charlton, Derby, Fulham, Huddersfield

Charlton Athletic: 12th

The Addicks were one of the favourites to struggle, having needed a late upturn in results to avoid the drop in 2014. The man who masterminded that escape was not kept on, as Jose Riga made way for fellow Belgian Bob Peeters, who took his first managerial job in England.

And in the early weeks they were the surprise package, with dynamic striker Igor Vetokele grabbing the goals that had been so elusive the previous season to secure home wins over Wigan Athletic and Derby County. High-flying Watford and Norwich City were also among their victims before the end of September as they ended up as the last unbeaten side in the Championship.

That was mainly due to being hard to beat, as they drew plenty of games, but the first defeat came at Bournemouth in mid-October. The first home loss came in early December against Ipswich Town, and that result was the catalyst for a shocking run which saw them slip to as low as 19th by January, a winless streak that cost Peeters his job.

There was controversy surrounding the appointment of successor Guy Luzon, but after a slow start the Israeli was able to guide the club back to mid-table, helped by the goals of January signing Tony Watt and impressive midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson. Despite finishing with a run of just one win in seven games, the Londoners finished in a credible 12th place.

Derby County: 8th

Having missed out on the Premier League by the most agonising of margins, free-flowing Derby were installed as favourites for promotion at the start of a season that promised so much, but eventually yielded very little.

Results early on were inconsistent, but by October they had truly hit their stride as they swept Bolton Wanderers, Bournemouth and Reading aside with ominous authority to top the table. However, they were never able to pull clear despite the continually strong form of top scorer Chris Martin.

A few concerns were raised following defeat to arch rivals Nottingham Forest in January, but they soon recovered to go on a seven-match unbeaten run, which showed little sign of the upset that was to come.

Despite the presence and form of loanees Darren Bent and Thomas Ince, the Rams completely fell out of the automatic promotion race as a toothless performance at Fulham began a sequence of seven games without victory, which included defeats to promotion rivals Middlesbrough and an unbelievable failure to beat Birmingham City when leading 2-0 deep in added time.

They still had matters in their hands on the final day, but an awful showing against Reading saw them slip out of the top six to finish a disappointing eighth. Following this collapse, Head Coach Steve McClaren was sacked.

Fulham: 17th

Felix Magath kept his promise and remained as manager of Fulham as they embarked on their first season below the top-flight since 2000-01, one which proved more difficult than they perhaps expected.

Forced to sell or loan out most of their top earners, the Cottagers had to rely on a squad made up mainly of youngsters although they did have the previous season's top scorer. Ross McCormack had signed for a Championship record £11m, but could not inspire his side to a strong start as they lost their opening four matches and spent the early weeks vying with Blackpool to avoid last place.

Magath was soon shown the door after just seven months in West London, and local legend Kit Symons was thrown into the hotseat. They still conceded goals, but Symons was able to turn results around, lifting them into the security of mid-table by Christmas with a run of just three defeats in 14 games; a sequence that included 4-0 home victories over Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday.

Once that momentum had faded, it was a bit more of a struggle as Fulham struggled for wins in the second half of the season and ran the risk of being dragged back into the relegation mire, but a couple of impressive wins over promotion chasing sides saw them safe, earning Symons the manager's role on a permanent basis.

Huddersfield Town: 16th

Things looked really bleak for the Terriers at a very early stage, with a 4-0 opening day loss to eventual champions Bournemouth prompting the departure of manager Mark Robins. Academy boss Mark Lillis stepped in and oversaw a run of one win in their next five league matches before Chris Powell was named as Robins' successor in early September.

He began by taking only one point from a possible nine, but victory over fellow strugglers Millwall at the end of the month began a superb run of seven games unbeaten. However, that form could not be sustained and they won just once more before Christmas to lie just a few points clear of the drop zone.

The second half of the season was a story of inconsistency which peaked in mid-March when they briefly occupied a place in the top half. Home form was poor overall, with January's impressive win over Watford an all too rare occasion where everything came together.

But Powell succeeded in keeping the club clear of danger, a feat that looked a tall order when he arrived. Next season, Nahki Wells promises to score more than the 11 goals he got this term, while youngsters Harry Bunn and Tommy Smith are exciting prospects who have a lot to build on, so the future is bright in Huddersfield.

Nottingham Forest prepare move for ex-Tottenham Hotspur midfielder

Filed Under  Fulham, Jamie O'Hara, Nottingham Forest, Sky Bet Championship

Nottingham Forest and Fulham's are interested in signing Blackpool midfielder Jamie O'Hara, according to HITC.

The 28-year-old made a huge impact after joining the club in November, picking up the fans' player of the year award despite missing close to half of the season.

O'Hara made 27 appearances for the Tangerines and scored two goals, assisting in 8 goals whilst making 72 goalscoring chances, putting him in the top 20 players in the Championship in terms of creativity.

The former Tottenham midfielder has been offered a new contract as his current deal ends this summer, but has yet to tell the club what his intentions are.

Forest are keen to bring O'Hara to the City Ground as he would be signed on a free which would be beneficial for the club given that they are currently under a transfer embargo.

Fulham manager Kit Symons is keen to sign the ex-Portsmouth and Wolves player and sees him as a good addition to push for promotion to the Premier League.

World Cup Preview

With the FIFA U-20 World Cup kicking off in New Zealand on Saturday, we look ahead to the tournament which will be graced by two Fulham youngsters in Emerson Hyndman and Tiago Casasola.

Having been initially named in their nations' respective preliminary squads, both Hyndman and Casasola made the final cut when the conclusive lists of 21 players were given to FIFA last week. They've been given squad numbers befitting their positions on the field of play, with United States captain and midfielder Hyndman taking the eight jersey, while central defender Casasola will don six on the back of his Argentina shirt.
History

Argentina hold the record for most U-20 World Cup wins, and will be gunning for their seventh this summer. Brazil (five) and Portugal (two) are the only other sides to have won the competition multiple times, and they will both be competing again in New Zealand.

The tournament is famous for allowing future superstars the platform on which to announce themselves, with many of the world's best players having burst onto the scene during the competition. The second-ever instalment of the showpiece, in 1979, provides the perfect example as Argentina's Diego Maradona was named best player.

The 1983 tournament featured strikers by the names of Marco van Basten and Bebeto, while four years later Yugoslavia were victorious with a squad that included the likes of Davor Suker, Robert Prosinecki, Zvonimir Boban and Predrag Mijatovic.

In more recent years, Luis Figo, Thierry Henry, Michael Owen, Xavi and Ronaldinho have all featured, while the Best Player and Top Scorer awards were both nabbed by a certain Lionel Messi in 2005.

France – who failed to qualify this year – are the current holders of the trophy, with Juventus' Paul Pogba named Golden Ball winner two years ago.
Route to the Final

With a strong squad, Argentina will fancy their chances of emerging from Group B without too much trouble, with Ghana likely to be their closest challengers. They will also face Austria and Panama, taking on the latter in their first match on Saturday.

The United States have been drawn to take on Ukraine and Myanmar, along with the hosts. Their first match pits them against Myanmar, and they will be heavy favourites against a side making their U-20 World Cup debut.

There are six groups in total, with the top two of each advancing to the last 16, where they will be joined by the four best third-place nations. If Argentina win their group, and the States finish third in theirs, then the sides could potentially meet at the first knock-out phase. The competition then adopts regular progression rules until the Final.
Familiar faces

In addition to the two Fulham players, there are several other British links to the U-20 showpiece. Midfielder Andreas Pereira has been tipped for a big future at Manchester United, and he is the club's sole representative at the World Cup after being named in the Brazil squad. Another familiar name is West Ham United's Diego Poyet who, despite representing England at a younger age, is in the Uruguay party. In total there are 13 players who ply their trade in the UK; three each from Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, two from Fulham, and one each from Arsenal, West Ham, Manchester United, Ipswich Town and Brentford.
Players to watch

There will be plenty of attention on Argentinean forwards Angel Correa and Giovanni Simeone after they dazzled at the South American Youth Football Championship in January. Simeone – son of Atletico Madrid boss Diego – top scored at that tournament, while Correa was bought by the 2013/14 La Liga winners for a reported €7.5m last summer. German winger Julian Brandt is another from whom big things are expected after the 19-year-old made 35 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen this season. Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho (pictured below) was named best player as Nigeria won the U-17 World Cup two years ago, and he's in the U-20 group this time around. Iheanacho scored the winner for City as they defeated Fulham's conquerors Porto in the Final of the Premier League International Cup earlier this month.
The stadiums

Casasola and his Argentina teammates will play all their Group Stage matches in the Wellington Regional Stadium (pictured below) on the North Island. Wellington is New Zealand's capital city and is most famous in some circles for providing the landscape for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Meanwhile, the United States will feature in two stadiums in Group A, starting off at the Northland Events Centre in Whangarei, before moving south for their latter two outings at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. This is also the setting for the Final on Saturday 20th June.
