Vitoria Guimaraes 0-1 Fulham U21s

An early strike from Stephen Humphrys saw Fulham Under-21s defeat Vitoria Guimaraes 1-0 in a pre-season friendly in Portugal on Friday.

A sharp start from Peter Grant's side saw Humphrys score a good individual goal after five minutes. He picked the ball up on the edge of the penalty area, drove into the box and produced an excellent finish with his left foot from 10 yards.

The Whites continued to impress and created some good chances with Humphrys and Luca de la Torre going close.

Guimaraes then came into the game and one effort flashed just wide of the post, but the half finished with Tayo Edun forced off with an ankle injury having come off worst in a firm challenge.

The second half begun with Fulham dominating possession. Humphrys went close from five yards and Josh Walker should have better with the follow up. Aaron Redford then thumped the post.

Fulham then dropped too deep and invited pressure from their hard-working opponents but Shane Elworthy replaced the excellent Josh Smile as the Whites closed the game out comfortably in the end.

Fulham: Soutter, Sheckleford, Evans, Davies, Adebayo, Smile (Elworthy 85), Edun (Kait 46), O'Halloran (Walker 46), de la Torre, Humphrys, Redford.

Cairney strikes as Fulham win at Crawley

Fulham's Tom Cairney celebrates scoring their first goal

Tom Cairney, Jazz Richards and Liam Donnelly all scored as Fulham beat Crawley 3-1 in an entertaining pre-season friendly.

The home side, relegated from League One last season, threatened first when Roarie Deacon sent a thundering effort cannoning off the underside of the bar early on.

But Fulham took the lead on 15 minutes as Crawley keeper Callum Preston turned Matt Smith's header into the path of Cairney, who slotted home the rebound.

However the Reds were level within a couple of minutes. Jazz Richards was adjudged to have brought down Izale McLeod on the corner of the area and the striker converted the penalty.

Preston, who impressed in goal for Crawley, made a superb block from Jamie O'Hara's close range effort but he was beaten just before the break by Richards, who latched on to Ross McCormack's through ball before applying the finish.

Fulham made seven changes at the break but kept McCormack on and he was denied by Preston early in the second half, before Crawley raced up the other end and substitute keeper Andy Lonergan smothered a shot from Deacon.

Adam Taggart went close with a shot across goal but Fulham had to wait until injury time to add a gloss to the scoreline, with Donnelly scoring after Crawley failed to deal with a corner.

Fulham first-half team: Bettinelli; Richards, Hutchinson, Bodurov, Kavanagh; Cairney, Christensen, O'Hara, Kacaniklic; McCormack, Smith.

Fulham second-half team: Lonergan; Grimmer, Hutchinson (Donnelly 62), Bodurov (Burgess 62), Kavanagh (Voser 62); Cole, Tunnicliffe, Hyndman, Pringle; McCormack (Taggart 62), Woodrow.

Crawley 1-3 Fulham: 90 minutes in 90 seconds

Fulham use 23 players in Sussex win.

Only Thomas Eisfeld (more to come on him later) was left on the bench.

The first-half Whites looked more likely to start the season than the second-period brigade, with the exception of Ben Pringle.

Fulham's midfield looks very promising, with plenty of options, but the defence is a work in progress, surely.

Jazz Richards, Jamie O'Hara, Marcus Bettinelli, Andy Lonergan and Tom Cairney - all play well, with goals from the latter, Richards and Liam Donnelly right at the end.

Fulham boss concedes defeat to Man City over Patrick Roberts

Fulham boss Kit Symons admits the club are resigned to losing wonderkid Pat Roberts to Manchester City for up to £11 million.

The Whites manager revealed he had sat down with the player and his parents in an attempt to convince him to stay - all to no avail.

"It's very difficult," Symons said after a 3-1 win at Crawley in a pre-season friendly. "He's handed in a transfer request now, and only got one year left on his contract.

"We want to keep all our best players, and build for the future, but there comes a point where we've got to do the right thing for the football club.

"He could sign a pre-contract in January with a club and walk away for nothing, and we're mindful of that.

"(Discussions) are progressing, it's fair to say. He's in serious talks with them (City). I need to have people who are committed to the club though."

Roberts has only made 19 appearances for Fulham in two seasons after making his debut in the Premier League, ironically against Manchester City in March 2014.

But it was his appearances for Fulham U21s (see video) that took them to the FA Youth Cup final in 2014, and England U19s that first caught the eye.

"I sat down with Pat and his parents, but their minds were made up," Symons added. "We did everything we could to keep him - but we move on."

Symons: No Bournemouth bid for Parker

Fulham boss Kit Symons has dismissed speculation linking captain Scott Parker with a move to Bournemouth.

Newspaper reports on Saturday claimed the 34-year-old, currently recovering from an ankle operation, was being lined up to join brother-in-law Harry Arter (pictured challenging Parker, above) at the Cherries.

But Symons, who has conceded he won't be able to stop Patrick Roberts joining Manchester City, insists there is nothing in the Parker story.

He said: "That's just speculation. We've certainly heard nothing about that.

"I've not been told anything at all."

According to today's paper, 2 mill up front up to 8 mill with add ons. Poor handling all round I think, saddens me.

Watching the ups and downs since 1958, wouldn't have it any other way, what a roller coaster of a club.
