Kelly Cates and George Riley will be the new sports duo bringing you every goal from all three divisions of the Sky Bet Football League from 9pm every Saturday of the season on Channel 5.

Kelly Cates was part of the Sky Sports News launch team, went on to report on the 2010 FIFA World Cup for ITV, the London 2012 Paralympics for Channel 4 and now presents 606 on Radio 5 Live with pundit Ian Wright. She brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for the game to Channel 5's new Football League highlights show.

Kelly Cates said: "I've always been drawn to the passion and unpredictability of The Football League. I can't wait to be involved in the show and look forward to welcoming viewers to the new home of the highlights show on Channel 5."

If you cut George Riley in half, British sports runs through the core of him. From trialling Olympic Games bids to World Championship Snooker, refereeing for the FA for a day to Rugby League, George has earned his stripes at the coal face of sports broadcasting. A regular on BBC Breakfast, the BBC sports news team and Radio 5 Live, George has passion for the local face of British sports and getting down to the details the fans need to know.

George Riley said: "It's exciting to be a new face on a new Football League highlights show which has a new home on Channel 5! With plenty of opportunities for viewers to get involved I'm looking forward to interacting with the fans and getting to the heart of the game."

Each show will feature extended coverage of that weekend's best matches and will include every single goal from all three divisions. Players, managers and fans will also be encouraged to join them in the studio each week, or take part in the conversation via Skype and Facetime. With Kelly's 50,000 Twitter followers and George's 30,000, the presenters will be able to engage with viewers direct and join the weekly debates from the studio. Viewers can also use the handles @footballon5, #footballon5 and also catch up on Demand 5 on multiple platforms.

Channel 5 can also confirm that Football League Tonight will continue in weeks where there is no Sky Bet Championship programme and will provide a special focus on the very best games in Sky Bet League 1 and Sky Bet League 2.

Executive Producer for Channel 5, Mark Sharman, said: "Kelly and George make an exciting new combination. They are strong editorially, really know their football and aren't afraid to add humour to the mix. We think the Football League is a great product and we intend to capture the passion, devotion and sometimes the disappointment that comes with following a League team.  In Sunset and Vine, we have the production company to achieve that."

PROSPECT: Moussa Dembélé

Eric Devin takes a deeper look at one of France's stars during their U19 European Championship which ended at the semi-final stage against Spain: Fulham's Moussa Dembélé.

Having celebrated his nineteenth birthday last Sunday with a fine goal and what was arguably a man of the match performance to cap France's Under-19 UEFA Championship group stage participation, Fulham's Moussa Dembele added yet another line to a resume already studded with impressive achievements. In the three years since his surprise arrival from Paris Saint-Germain, the striker has failed to make much of a dent in the senior squad at Craven Cottage.

As a result, many may not be aware of the youngster and his accomplishments, Fulham's relegation certainly doing little to aid things in that regard. With France having Thursday succumbed to a pair of late goals from Spain & Real Madrid's Mario Asensio, this seems as opportune time as any to flesh out the youngster's back story and development, as well as to give some sort of indication as to the level of progress that can be expected from him.

Signed in July of 2012 from Paris Saint-Germain's academy, Dembele was lightly regarded by the English press at the time, a combination of having arrived at the same time as the departure of his namesake, the Belgian and currently Tottenham Hotspur midfielder. Having been with the capital side since the age of eight and a consistent inclusion with the U-16 national side, the player had some reputation domestically, but the departures of the likes of Clint Dempsey and Dembele were part of what some saw as a fire sale on the club's part, off-loading salable assets in a series of financially motivated moves.

Despite Dembele's promise, Premier League survival was the primary focus for most fans, and with the following season's relegation the promise of a teenager held little allure.

Despite the lack of attention, Dembele started out his first season at Fulham like a house on fire, netting 16 times in 19 matches for the club's U-18 side, despite suffering a thigh injury which kept him sidelined for long periods. By the end of the 2012-13 season, Fulham had captured the U-18 Premier League title, and Dembele, still just 16, had even been afforded a few inclusions in the U-21 side, although the senior side was still another matter.

That July, he signed his first professional contract with the club, a two-year deal which ran until the present summer, an agreement which has since been extended until 2016.

The following season was Fulham's swansong in the Premier League, and while Dembele did earn a few cameos with the senior side, he failed to make an impact at that level. Despite this, the striker proved impressive once again for the Cottagers' youth sides, easily earning promotion to the U-21s, and scoring five goals in his first four matches upon his arrival. Bouncing among the three sides for the duration of the season, Dembele proved a bright spot, but for the casual fan, the club's lackadaisical performances in the Premier League were a more pressing concern.

With the club's subsequent relegation and indeed struggles in the Championship this year, the player was given short shrift as first Felix Magath and then his successor Kit Symons rarely included him in the senior club, despite his performances at youth level. Both instead preferred to rely on more veteran attacking players such as Hugo Rodallega, Bryan Ruiz and record signing Ross McCormack. With a relegation scrap underway, not much more could have been expected from the club's management, especially with England U-21 Cauley Woodrow likewise ahead of Dembele in the club's pecking order.

Persevering nonetheless, Dembele scored a smart brace in a League Cup loss to Derby County and became, in the course of the last year, a more consistent member of Patrick Gonfalone's U-19 side in the process. Indeed, it is perhaps at international level that Dembele's performances have demonstrated the most marked improvement. Positionally, Dembele can operate either as a left winger or as a traditional striker, his combination of size, pace and ability with the ball at his feet making him an Alexandre Lacazette-like presence who can torment defences in an number of ways.

While the comparison to Ligue 1′s reigning scoring champion may seem a reach given Dembele's record and position to date, the Lyon player was likewise often shuttled to the wing with more veteran strikers in the side, biding his time until the proper opportunity arose. While Lacazette is more of an instinctive finisher, preferring to get at players with the ball at his feet, using his strength and craft to move past them, Dembele can also operate as more of a target man, his aerial prowess exceeding that of the OL man.

Heading into the U-19 European Championships, however, Dembele's goals for Fulham's youth teams meant little, as the likes of Maxwell Cornet, Kingsley Coman and Sehrou Guirassy were receiving much more first team experience at the senior level for their clubs, and were given precedence by Gonfalone.

However, with fellow forward Ulrich Nnomo unable to make the trip to Greece due to injury, Dembele was afforded the opportunity. Left out of the starting eleven in the first group stage match against Austria, Dembele instead was left to making an appearance off the bench. However, when Kingsley Coman had to come off against the Ukraine in the second group stage game, Dembele came on and scored, his goal restoring France's advantage shortly after Ukraine's equalizer.

Having won both of their first two matches, assuring first place in the group, Gonfalone gave Dembele the start in the last match, against the hosts in Katerini. Despite only scoring once, Dembele was easily the game's best player, slicing apart Greece's back line at will, combining with Samed Kilic and Neal Maupay to devastating effect. With Dembele's pace and ability with the ball at his feet, he readily showed the multivalency of his talent with his goal, an acrobatic sliding finish from Maupay.

Unlucky not to have added to his single tally, the drive with which Dembele played in a match that had no bearing on his team's placement was impressive indeed, and France were eager to continue their fine group stage displays against a higher caliber of opposition in the next round

While a healthy Coman rightly reclaimed his place in the semi-final against Spain, playing alongside Guirassy and Cornet, who had been rested against Greece, Dembele was again afforded a chance from the bench with the match still scoreless. Failing to impress as a late brace from Real Madrid's Marco Asensio saw the Spaniards through, Dembele is still far from the finished article.

The motor that he had showed in the previous match was not in evidence, a much more experienced Spanish defense easily shackling France's attack and leaving Dembele and his teammates frustrated.

That said, if he can consistently figure with Fulham's senior squad this season, establishing a rapport with his fellow attackers after bouncing between the senior side and the U-21s last season, there is every chance he could be one of the season's revelations.

With the likes of Patrick Roberts, Hugo Rodallega and Bryan Ruiz having moved on, there will be considerably more opportunities for Dembele, and should he, like his international teammates, be given more of a chance at senior level this season, it is all but inevitable that his development will continue apace.

The goals for Dembele should be to continue to grow with France, making the squad for next year's Toulon Tournament and maybe figuring as the U-21s  try to qualify for 2017′s championship. If he can continue to progress for club and country, the flashes of brilliance displayed in Greece may be only the beginning. While the Championship can get lost in the shuffle in terms of the world of football, especially away from England, one would be well advised to keep an eye on Fulham's results and the performances of their promising young Frenchman, as we may be seeing the naissance of yet another dynamic French attacker.

Fulham Miss Out On Target

Yesterday we reported how Fulham`s interest in a young defender might see Manchester United do a deal.

The young player in question was Reece James, a 21-year-old defender who it was expected was going to replicate last season and be sent out on loan.

Fulham`s intentions were to fend off any clubs that were interested in taking James on loan by trying to secure a permanent deal for the player.

However, it seems Fulham weren`t the only club thinking along those lines.

This morning it has been announced by Manchester United and confirmed by the BBC that the 21-year-old has left Manchester United but instead of possibly heading for the delights of London, James has chosen the delighting setting of Wigan Pier for the next stage of his career.

Wigan have signed the 21-year-old on a three year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Plenty more fish in the sea, as they say!

Fulham hope it's third-time lucky with £4m bid for Brighton defender

Whites planning a slam Dunk for prized Albion player

Wanted man: Lewis Dunk

If at first you don't succeed – throw a bit more money at it.

It's what Fulham boss Kit Symons might be thinking after the club went back in for Brighton defender Lewis Dunk.

Fulham have reportedly tabled a £4m bid for centre-back Dunk and are waiting for a response from the Seagulls, after two previous bids of £3m and £2.5m were rejected.

Sliding in: George Williams (L) takes on Brighton's Lewis Dunk

The Whites are hoping to steal a march on their Premier League rivals for 6ft 4ins Dunk's signature by upping the bid and hoping money talks after recouping a prospective £11m from the sale of Patrick Roberts to Man City.

Everton, Newcastle, Stoke, West Brom and Norwich are also interested in the 23 year-old, with Brighton determined to hang on to their prized asset.

Midfielder went on tour to Germany with Cod Army

Fleetwood Town Football Club can confirm the signing of midfielder Lyle Della-Verde on a two year deal.

Della-Verde left Championship outfit Fulham at the end of last season, and has been on trial with the Cod Army since the beginning of July. He was part of the touring squad that went to Germany.

Capable of playing anywhere across the middle of the park from a winger to a box-to-box midfielder, Lyle can also played as a support striker on occasion.

Manager Graham Alexander said: "Lyle has been with us since the first day of pre-season. He has shown a fantastic attitude and he brings us something a little bit different in midfield.

"He is a young player with lots of potential. He is hungry for the chance to play first team football so he is a great addition to a squad that we are already pleased with.

"He is very comfortable on the ball. He can operate in various positions, he is mainly left footed but he is comfortable on his right. He will definitely be a player that will emerge into the first team if not starting. We have high hopes
for him."

Grant's Portugal Review

Peter Grant took a group that included a mixture of Under-21, Under-19 and Under-18s to Portugal last week for a pre-season training camp, so we caught up with our Development Coach who told us a little more about the trip

"Mostly it was an Under-19 group as there are a few of the players are with the First Team," Grant explained. "Cameron [Burgess], Liam [Donnelly], Ryan [Williams] were all away so it left us with about six Under-21s all in all.

"So, it was a combination of them and the young boys who have come in for their first year; the scholars, plus the second years, plus the first year pros. It was a group of about 30.

The young Whites played two friendlies whilst at the camp, against Vitoria Guimaraes and Sporting Braga, coming out on top on both occasions.

"The Under-19 group played against Guimaraes so we had one game there, and the Under-18 boys played Braga, so it meant everyone could get game time," he said.

"The game against Guimaraes was tough against a good side and I was pleased with how we played on the night which was more important. It meant people got up to 65 minutes because you don't want to get them up to 90 straight away. A couple had to due to the small numbers that we have but apart from that we were very pleased with how they played on the day.

"They committed themselves to the training and a couple of days later the 18s played, and they played very well in the first half against Braga. Braga didn't play well the first half but you have to give our boys credit for the way they started the game as they ended five up at half-time, but their overall performance deserves great credit. The scoreline suggests it was an easy match but it's only easy if you put the right effort in and we did that over the full trip."

The Scotsman was pleased with the trip on and off the field as it gave the younger players a chance to bed into the group and gave the staff a chance to get to know more about some new faces.

"We trained double sessions over there, whether it was a fitness session or a football session; it was a very good environment," he said. "Obviously there was a combination of the younger players coming in for the first time and us as staff got to know them, getting to know all the names you see around the training ground, so it was great for that.

"The hotel was lovely, the people looked after us exceptionally well, the food was great and more importantly the training and the matches we were very pleased with."

With the start of the 2015/16 campaign now just over a fortnight away, Grant is keen to instil a mind set in Fulham's young players which will give them the greatest chance of success.

"The next day is the most important and that's the mentality we've got to get in their mind, train as it's their very last," he stated. "Every day we try to be as professional and disciplined as we can be. There are no shortcuts, if there was we'd all take them.
"It's performances that count. Every time you play you never know who is watching; the First Team manager, managers from other clubs who are impressed with you. You have to perform every day in training to get selected."

Fulham launch £4 million bid for Brighton's star defender

Get West London have today reported that Fulham have made a third bid for Brighton & Hove Albion defender Lewis Dunk after previously having bids of £2.5 million and £3 million rejected by the Seagulls.

The 23 year-old has been a hot topic this summer with Premier League outfits Everton, Stoke, Newcastle, West Brom and Norwich all having expressed interested in the towering defender but its the Cottagers who are acting on that interest with a £4 million bid.

Fulham won't be short of money at the moment having recently sold Patrick Roberts to Manchester City for a reported £8 million, and boss Kit Symons is hopeful their latest bid will be enough to prise Dunk away from the Falmer Stadium.

Dunk, a 6'4″ centre-back, has been with his home town club his whole career and has gone on to make over 100 appearances for the Seagulls over the past six seasons.

One of the first names on the team sheet last season, Dunk was a key reason why Brighton narrowly avoided relegation by just one point. Incredibly, he finished as the clubs top scorer for the 2014-15 campaign as he netted seven goals in all competitions.

Taggart and Woodrow score as Fulham draw with Hertha Berlin
by DAN on JULY 22, 2015

Goals from Adam Taggart and Cauley Woodrow helped Fulham come from two goals down to draw their latest pre-season friendly against Hertha Berlin in Schladming this evening.

Manager Kit Symons had spoken in the build up to this game about giving members of his first-team squad extended game time during this week-long tour of Austria and offered eight of his squad a full ninety minutes as preparations for Fulham's Championship opener stepped up a gear against the Bundesliga side. Unfortunately, the frailties of Fulham's fragile defence – so often exposed last season – didn't take long to come to the fore as the German outfit raced into a two-goal lead inside the first fifteen minutes.

Hertha went in front after just five minutes thanks to a clinical piece of finishing from Vladimiri Darida, although Fulham's defence was far too slow to close down the Czech midfielder following a threatening run from full-back Marvin Plattenhardt. A silly foul from Cameron Burgess – who was penalised for pushing at a corner – gave Hertha the chance to double their lead from the penalty spot and Jan Hegeler made no mistake from twelve yards. Moments later, a shambolic backpass from skipper Nikolay Bodurov underlined the shakiness of Fulham's defence.

The Whites did pull a goal back just after the half hour mark. Woodrow saw his fine header superbly turned aside by goalkeeper Thomas Kraft but, from the resultant corner, Australian international Taggart nodded home his first goal for the club after Ryan Tunnicliffe and Burgess had won two clear headers inside the six-yard box. Hertha continued enjoy more of the possession, but aside from one Marcus Bettinelli block to deny Roy Beerens, they failed to fashion too many chances.

Symons made a triple substitution on 63 minutes introducing Moussa Dembele, Lasse Vigen Christensen and Ben Pringle for Taggart, Larnell Cole and Tunnicliffe. Dembele's pace began to stretch the German defence, with Christensen's composure and enlivening what had previously been a more workmanlike midfield. Woodrow, who had played much of the match in a deeper role behind Taggart, showed his predatory instincts when he latched onto a loose ball 25 yards from goal and drove an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner. Fulham might have capped the comeback with a third but Dembele couldn't get enough power on his header to divert a dangerous Pringle cross towards goal.

The nervy nature of Fulham's defending will have been a real concern for Symons, who has yet to make any defensive additions to his squad over the course of the summer desperate Fulham's failings in that area over the course of the past season. The spirit and character shown to come back from such a disastrous start, though, will have boosted confidence ahead of another stern test against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

FULHAM (4-4-1-1): Bettinelli; Grimer, Voser, Bodurov, Burgess; Tunnicliffe, Hyndman (Christensen 63), Cole (Pringle 63), Kacaniklic; Woodrow, Taggart (Dembele 63). Subs (not used): Rodak, Richards, Hutchinson, Cairney.

GOALS: Taggart (31), Woodrow (71).

HERTHA BERLIN (4-1-4-1): Kraft; Pekarik, Langkamp, Lustenberger, Plattenhardt; Skjelbred; Beerens (Mittelstädt 72), Hegeler (Kohls 45), Darida, Stocker; Haraguchi. Subs (not used): Gersbeck.

GOALS: Darida (4), Hegeler (pen 14).

Who's the next big prospect at Fulham after Patrick Roberts?

While Fulham supporters will be upset to lose England Under-19 winger Patrick Roberts to Manchester City, they can console themselves in having one of the best academies in England.

Roberts, who reportedly turned down Liverpool to sign for City according to the Daily Mail, was long vaunted as one of his generation's biggest talents, but only played 17 times in the Championship last season as Fulham manager Kit Symons opted for the experience of Ross McCormack and Bryan Ruiz in the attacking midfield position.

Fulham were powerless to keep the 18-year-old, who has represented England at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 level, once he handed in a transfer request, as reported by the Guardian.

Roberts is able to play on either flank and behind the striker, although he favours cutting in from the right-hand side on his left foot and using his majestic dribbling abilities.

He was one of a number of academy graduates introduced to the first-team squad on a regular basis under Symons and his predecessor Felix Magath, along with Lasse Vigen Christensen, George Williams, Sean Kavanagh, Cauley Woodrow, Jack Grimmer and Marcus Bettinelli.
So before supporters begin to despair, here's five reasons why the future is still bright in SW6.

Moussa Dembele

Moussa Dembele won 47% of his average duels in the league last season.

In a quirk of coincidence, French striker Moussa Dembele arrived from Paris Saint-Germain at the same time his Belgian namesake was leaving Craven Cottage for Tottenham.

The 19-year-old striker was handed his first start by Magath against Everton in March 2014, as Fulham struggled in vain to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Last season the French Under-19 international wasn't given much of a chance to make an impression in a Fulham shirt, with Matt Smith, Woodrow and McCormack preferred in his place. However he did net his first two goals for the club against Derby County in the Capital One Cup, giving supporters a glimpse of his ability.

Strong, quick and athletic, Dembele possess all the attributes to be a success in the Championship, especially as he continues to grow into his powerful frame.

The only issue is whether Dembele is happy to wait for a chance at Fulham, with Ajax, Genoa and Everton reportedly keeping a close eye on contract developments, according to the Daily Mail.

Dembele's heat-map in his longest appearance, against Blackpool.

Emerson Hyndman

Emerson Hyndman created nine chances for Fulham last term.

Last season represented something of a breakthrough campaign for Hyndman, who made his Fulham debut on the first day of the season against Ipswich before earning a call-up to the United States national team in August, starting against the Czech Republic.

Hyndman joined the club as a 15-year-old, and immediately impressed with his ability to dictate play and control the tempo of a game. This is an area he continues to thrive in, particularly when it comes to the accuracy of his passing.

Hyndman had the joint-highest pass accuracy in the Fulham squad last season.

The central midfielder has been active in the off-season, captaining USA in the Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand as they made the quarter-finals, losing on penalties to eventual winners Serbia.

Although he only played nine league games last season, Hyndman fits perfectly into Symons' 4-4-2 diamond formation, so chances should be more forthcoming for the 19-year-old in the coming campaign.

Foday Nabay

Foday Nabay in action for England.

Nabay was on the verge of becoming Birmingham City's youngest-ever player before moving to Fulham as a 15-year-old in July 2013.

The 16-year-old is now a regular in Fulham's youth sides and has played for both England Under-16s and 17s.

Nabay is a powerful presence in midfield, but injuries have slowed his progress somewhat, so he remains a raw prospect rather than someone who will be in-and-around the first-team squad in the coming season.

Nonetheless Symons and chief football officer Mike Rigg will be keeping a close eye on his progress with Fulham's Under-18 side in the coming campaign.

Tiago Casasola

Tiago Casasola poses with the Fulham shirt following his arrival last summer.

Casasola joined Fulham from Boca Juniors in August 2014, but since arriving at Craven Cottage little has been heard of the 19-year-old Argentine defender.

This was because Fulham gave the centre-back time to acclimatise to both the mental and physical rigours of English football, giving Casasola the best chance of settling into life in London.

A tall, rangy centre-back, Casasola provides a calming presence in defence, and is able to stride out and provide a link to midfield.

He has nine caps for the Argentine Under-20s in a talented crop of players, alongside the likes of Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa and River Plater striker Giovanni Simeone, so his ability is not in question.

The coming season should see Casasola's development continue with the Under-21s, but don't be surprised if he's given a chance in the League and FA Cup, especially if Fulham's defence continues to prove leaky.

Ange-Freddy Plumain

Ange-Freddy Plumain in action for Fulham's Under-21s last term.

Fulham narrowly avoided a transfer embargo when signing France Under-18 winger Plumain from Lens in 2013.

Now aged 20, Plumain is yet to feature for Fulham outside of cup competitions, but his dribbling ability and pace gives Symons' squad something they don't currently have.

Plumain's difficulty lies in the fact that Fulham's current formation doesn't always utilise wingers, so until this changes he will struggle to feature on a regular basis.

The coming season is a key year in his development given his age, but Symons has shown a willingness to play youngsters, so he should be given every chance to shine if he continues to work hard.

Brighton turn down Fulham's £4m bid for Dunk
by DAN on JULY 22, 2015

Brighton and Hove Albion have rejected Fulham's £4m bid for their central defender Lewis Dunk, according to reports on the south coast this evening.

The Argus newspaper revealed that the Seagulls have rebuffed Fulham's improved offer for the 23 year-old centre back and are adamant that they will not sell Dunk to a Championship rival. Brighton turned down an opening bid of around £2m for Dunk in June and also rejected a £3m offer earlier this month. Albion are believed to value Dunk, who has made more than 100 appearances for Brighton since captaining the club's youth team at around £5m, but it remains to be seen whether Kit Symons will now move on to other transfer targets.

Symons has made the strengthening of his defence a key priority for the summer after Fulham conceded 83 goals last season, which was the second worst defensive record in the Championship. Dunk missed Brighton's friendly at Crawley Town tonight through injury.

Socceroo striker scores for Fulham in Austria

Socceroo forward Adam Taggart was on target for Fulham in the Championship club's 2-2 draw with Hertha Berlin on their tour of Austria.
