Fulham 3 Sheffield United 0

The Cottagers eased into the third round of the Capital One Cup last night with a convincing win over Sheffield United, at Craven Cottage, last night.

The win will go a long way to giving Kit Symons some breathing space after a disappointing start to our Championship campaign whilst also giving Fulham a home tie against the Premier League side Stoke City.

The game was pretty even until the second half but once the hour mark had passed Fulham pressed home their advantage with three goals.

The first of these came in the sixty-second minute when the referee, Dean Whitehouse, awarded Fulham a spot-kick after Ross McCormack was adjudged to have been fouled whilst trying to execute an overhead kick in the area. McCormack stepped up and duly scored.

Having edged ahead, Fulham killed the game off in the seventy-fifth minute when McCormack netted his second of the night, scoring after a fine lay-off from Ben Pringle.

Two goals behind, our visitors somewhat lost their heads going down to nine men with Jose Baxter and Kieran Wallace both receiving straight red-cards. The former was dismissed for a crude late challenge on Tom Cairney and the latter for a foul on Moussa Dembele as he raced clear.

However, an emphatic victory was sealed when Moussa Dembele tapped home a third in the last minute.

A decent display from Fulham although the attendance of 55,927 was hugely disappointing!

Fulham to launch late triple transfer raid

Cottagers looking for two or three more in the door before the September 1 deadline

Fulham boss Kit Symons is looking for two or three more signings to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes.

The Whites have added seven first-team players to their squad on permanent transfers, with Tim Ream joining the club last week, and have also brought in Luke Garbutt and Joe Lewis in on loan.

But, after a host of departures, the Whites are still in need of some added quality on the ball and strength in depth as virtually a full strength squad was used in last night's 3-0 win over Sheffield United, who had made 10 changes from their side who had beaten Blackpool on Saturday.

Battle: Fulham's Moussa Dembele in action with Sheffield United's George Long

Symons said: "I'm looking for two or three more. Two at least, maybe three. It's what we're after.

While it is uncertain whether any new faces will be in through the door before Saturday's trip to bottom side Rotherham, the Fulham boss remains confident players will be joining before the window closes at 6pm on September 1.

Symons added: "I hope (we are close to our targets). There will be additions. I'm very very confident there will be more additions."

Fulham are believed to be tracking another defender, a winger and a striker to partner Ross McCormack.

Match Report: Fulham 3 - Sheffield United 0

Makes a change.

Good thing our cup campaign is going better than our league one. Anyway, goals from Ross McCormack and Moussa Dembele led us to a 3-0 win against Sheffield United last night.

The second half was definitely better than the first, as Sheffield had the first chance of the game, when Lasse Vigen Christensen lost possesssion of the ball. Martyn Woolford cut in, taking the ball, and fired onto gola, however Andrew Lonergan was there to tip the ball over for a corner, which was subsequently headed over by Harrison McGahey. We replied with an effort from Alexander Kacaniklic just a few moments later, after some ball control meant he skipped past 3 visiting players, but his low shot was too wide of the post. We almost took the lead in the 12th minute, when Christensen weaved his way into the box before feeding McCormack, whose blocked shot then found its way to Ryan Tunniclife, but his hard shot hit the bar and flew away.

Marc McNulty had a fair chance off a bad pass from Tim Ream, but Lonergan was there to save. This happened at the other end too, with George Long diving down to catch a low shot from Christensen. Another good chance for us came 25 minutes in, this time Kay Voser and Tunniclife applying pressure, with Voser playing in Dembele, but his shot was oh so close- missing by just a yard. The game went quiet until the end of the first half, when a cross from Ben Pringle was headed just wide by Dembele, while a strike from Woolford deflected off target at our goal.

The game took quite a great turn for us in the second card, with United man James Wallace being shown a yellow card for clipping Ryan Tunniclife, who was on a great run to goal. Some good possession on the end of the box led to McCormack getting the ball, whose curled effort landed in the arms of Long. We were given a penalty on the hour mark when Tunniclife header was supposed to meet McCormack, however the Scotsman was being held back by Kieran Wallace as he went to strike. The penalty was a goal, with the striker simply planting the ball in the bottom left corner. 1-0. Kacaniklic was taken off shortly after, being replaced with Tom Cairney, while the visitors bought Jose Baxter and Connor Dimaio on to replace Diego De Girolamo and James Wallace. Two efforts followed in the 70th minute, when a through ball from Cairney was supposed to meet Dembele but was blocked. Tunniclife then regained possession, but shot high and wide with his left foot. Dimaio rocketed over the bar while the visiting fans watched their team make an attack towards goal.

McCormack made it 2-0 in classic style, Ben Pringle feeding him with a pass, before accurately striking in on the far corner of the net. Dembele was still looking for a goal as he found a header from a cross by Pringle, which - somehow - was tipped over by Long. Ream was taken off, recieving a standing ovation from the home fans, replaced with Nikolay Bodurov. United attacked on goal again in the 83rd minute, but a McNulty header was easily caught by Lonergan. The visiting side used up all their changes as Che Adams came on to replace Craig Alcock. Baxter was shown a red for a harsh challenge on Cairney. Bodurov's free kick landed at McCormack, whose downwards header wasn't speedy enough, and was easily caught by Long. The Scotsman didn't stop there, drilling a strike towards goal, but unfortunately went just wide. United recieved their second red card of the night, and the first straight red, when Kieran Wallace cut Dembele Down as he was making a run on goal. McCormack rocketed the free kick on target, but unfortunately it was caught with a great diving save from Long. Dembele finally got his goal in the last minute of added time, tapping comfortable past the United goalie to wrap it up, 3-0.

Symons After Two or Three More Players

Although the win over Sheffield United last night, in the Capital One Cup, our disappointing start to our Championship season has already seen the natives display unrest at Craven Cottage.

As is the case with most clubs, an air of optimism fills the air every pre-season and after our dalliance with those clubs hovering around the relegation trap-door last season, Fulham supporters were hoping that we`d be mounting a promotion charge this campaign.

That may still be the case as it still is really early days when it comes to a season being defined. However, our performances so far infer that we are a squad that is a little light in depth and that we could still do with some reinforcements.

It is a view that Kit Symons shares with those good folk over at Get West London carrying some wonderful comments from the boss which read,

"I'm looking for two or three more. Two at least, maybe three. It's what we're after.

"I hope we are close to our targets. There will be additions. I'm very, very confident there will be more additions."

With it also being insinuated that Fulham are after a striker, a defender and a winger, has anyone any idea as to who Kit might be tracking?

Fulham considering bid for Huddersfield Town striker

Sky Bet Championship outfit Fulham are considering making a move for Huddersfield Town striker James Vaughan, a club insider from Fulham has informed Football League World.

The 27-year-old joined Huddersfield Town on an initial loan spell in 2013, which was made permanent in 2013 in a £600,000 deal taking him to West Yorkshire from Norwich City.

However, Vaughan has had a career plagued with injury, and particularly over the last couple of years, he's been an infrequent player for the Terriers, who face a constant battle to keep him off the injury table.

The ex-Everton striker has now been told that he won't be offered a new contract when his deal expires at the end of the season, subsequently igniting interest from Kit Symons' Fulham.

If any side could keep Vaughan fit he'd be a terrific player, and will guarantee goals in the Championship, but it remains to be seen whether the striker will ever be able to get his form and consistency back.
